Texas Tech (Lubbock) c/o 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Tis true, eggs are very cheap. Actually I calculated my food costs one day, and they are around $6 per day. That includes salmon from those packets at Walmart and a lot of cheese and chicken.

So I suppose $3 is possible. Plus, I noticed you could get a roomate and save $200 in rent like I'm doing. That would lower your monthly expenses to $900 per month.

I can just see it, you become a wealthy orthopedic surgeon or something and are still pinching pennies. You'd be like "I didn't get all this money by giving it away"

Bran cereal and fortified milk gives you your daily needs of proteins, fiber, fat, carbs and some vitamins(multivit supplement can take care of the rest).

Other dairy products and grans are also healthy and cheap; Whole wheat bread and eggs(omelet-style)

see, i have variety and and also eat healthy.

not to mention soups are really cheap, easy, filling, quick, only require a microwave, come in a huge variety, and have lots of veggies and beans for your vitamins and proteins fix.

Habeed- you are the official roommate lobbyist!

I think for guys roommates work out alright- but many girls who are this age prefer more space (and for me a walk in closet)... the doctor I nanny for (a male) lived in an efficiency all the way through residency- I couldn't do it!

Dazed- I am impressed... I love eggs but 3 days a week is about all I can stomach. I am not much of a cook either but I will do some stuff on the George Foreman grill, cook some basics, as well as do some eating out. Also, it cost more to get fresh fruits and veggies.

Rosa's has the best tortillas ever and every Tuesday is Taco Tuesday- you get 3 tacos, rice, and beans for $3.33! That could be a weekly routine for me!

Well, I just hate to throw money away when I could spend it on something that meant more to me. Right now, the 2 bed apartment I live in I basically have to myself 80% of the time...my roomate never really uses it. So, for 60% of the cost of a 1 bedroom, I have bigger kitchen, living room, and even a cat belonging to my roomate to play with.

A 1 bedroom apartment makes lots of sense for a couple, of course, because then that's also efficient. Except for the risk of breakup, that is...

meh, it's just a matter of priorities:
not having a roommate is throwing away money to you. you'd rather have a new car.

buying a new car is throwing away money to me. id rather not have a roommate.

tomato, tomahto.

😎

I see very little alcohol budgeted, maybe that's just me.

True. It really doesn't matter, I guess. Plus that means that people who think like you lower the prices on the rental houses and 2 bed apartments for people who think like me

Crud. We need to redo our budgets from scratch. Also, I wonder if the undergraduate fraternities at Tech would let me pledge...

I have a few "issues" I need to work out...

Going to be hard to fit class in between nights at the bar and various events lol. Guess I just need to keep my head in the game, and my priorities straight. P=MD, right? 😛

anyone planning to go to spring training from the college station area? (or houston too for that matter)

you planning on flying or driving?

i'm not really looking forward to shelling out $250ish for a plane ticket, but driving back for 8hours late sunday night for monday morning classes also doesn't sound fun.

bump

well I for one am going to forgo the alcohol for a dog 😉 I'm sooooo excited. I've been saving money by living with my boyfriend (who it turns out might be able to move to lubbock after my M1) I'm not someone who needs a lot of frills so a cheap 1 bedroom that allows dogs is what i'll go for. There are actually apartments in lubbock with their own Dog park! (deerfied village I think is the name)

I'm currently searching for schnauzer puppies 😀 so cute!

I don't have cable right now, so i won't need to pay for that. I'd rather live without coffee & extra's than without a dog.

oh and Maggie, i'll be driving from college station for it (assuming I don't get accepted to A&M from the waitlist...which I highly doubt I will).

I'll be driving from San Antonio, pending further details, if anyone wants to carpool. Not a whole lot between here and Lubbock, but figured it's worth a shot.

We'll probably stay at least a week to find a house, do job interviews etc but you're welcome to ride with us (and Wrigley the little dog possibly) both ways or one way and then fly the other if you have class. I've done the drive a hundred times. Boring drive but not awful.

Haha Ya I live there and the dog park is pretty legit. Bearflats are a little closer and are nice too.

OK smart buddies... I need a name for my new adorable female schnauzer puppy!!! (i promise i'll post pictures in a little bit). She's soooo cute, but i am completely blank when it comes to naming her...

herrtex...what do you think of deerfield? is it full of undergrads? loud? safe? any opinions are appreciated.

I had a female lab (lots of energy) when I was younger that we named Razzmatazz- we called her Razzy for short.

I actually like deerfield. There are very few to none undergrads. Mostly the older crowd and the management is excellent. I have lived in other apartments in lubbock which were mostly undergrads and wasn't the biggest fan of loud and late parties all night (except if I was there 😀). I pay 530$ for a 1bd (that doesn't include utilities, cable, water..etc). I feel very safe here compared to other apartments or houses.

If anyone is looking for houses "Tech Terrace" is a nice area and close to campus. The only problem is that you will have to do some hunting around and driving around to find leases.

Herr- does your 1 bd have W/D connections???

Ya mine does but I can't remember if all the 1bd's have them. I'm pretty sure though that many of them have W/D connections.

.

I am definitely staying away from deerfield then. I'm not a dog person, or any pet for that matter.

Quiet in here.

.....
Addicted to SDN are we?😉
I shouldn't be joking about that since I regularly check it on my phone. 😛 Ah, what to talk about?

Speaking of tofu hating, anyone ever attempted to tackle that ridiculous steak out there in Amarillo? I saw that on food network once. I think that should have been the interview process. If you can eat it, you will come.

So to whom do we fill out the $100 check? The complete name of the school won't fit!

my uncle did it- and my cousin and brother are thinking about going for it this summer- I personally grew up there and never did it (I think 8oz. is too much!) ...but the Big Texan is pretty awesome my grandparents play the fiddle and bass (the 6ft tall one not the guitar) out there!

I bought a dresser tonight for my new apartment that I will get...

during the trip I found the 1 and only Taco Cabana in Atlanta- HALLELUJAH!

That's awesome. Yeah, every now and then I can handle a pounder but that would be my limit. Is there a lot of good bbq around lubbock?

I would assume so- there is good BBQ in Amarillo...my favorite is Cattle Call (its in the mall but is sit-down)... I don't know that much about local stuff in Lubbock since I grew up in Amarillo and have been in Atlanta almost 7 years.

I always used to go to a place called Bigham's Smokehouse; it's decent, and pretty cheap. But, for a good sandwich nothing beats Tom & Bingo's Hickory Pit, it's a small mom & pop that's been around for ages. They make a mean brisket sandwich (The Bingo Burger).

Every once in a while I get really excited about meeting everyone. Now is one of those times. 😀

Me too....and you better look like Stewie, cuz I don't know if I can change the mental image I have of you.

:c)

Well I picked a name for my puppy 🙂 Fiona (from a lyle lovett song & also the princess on shrek) Here's a video my boyfriend made of her last night if you are a puppy person and feel like seeing it.

Just wanted to share!

Awww she's adorable. :c) She can be friends with Wrigley.

(No, he does not usually wear clothing, haha - my mom got him a hoodie that said "Aggie Dog" and this was for her)

So when will we hear something more "official" about spring training?

Aggie - Wrigley is supercute. Is he a maltese?

You guys are making me want a dog even more! I have wanted a small fluffy dog (maltese, yorkie, or shih tzu) for a long time!

What are peoples plans for dogs 3rd and 4th year? I currently am single (and loving it!) so I would be out there with crazy hours trying to keep a dog.

Thanks!

He looks like one, but he's really a Coton (short for Coton De Tulear)....nobody has heard of them and I get funny looks when I expalin his breed so I quite often call him a Maltese.

However, at almost 20 lbs he is significantly bigger than most Maltese dogs.

I'll be married....I dunno how you'd do it without a second person.

seriously, that's what i want to know!!!!!!!

xx216xx seems to have disappeared... but all i want to do is think about and talk about next year!!!!!!!!!!!

as much as i've hated the waiting over the past coupld of months, i now kinda wish the match was closer to end of march or maybe beginning of april so that we wouldn't have as much of this 'lull-time'.

it's like i've been on this crazy high over med school the past couple of weeks, but now it's like: dang, gotta go back to my undergrad for another thirteen weeks. i kind of feel like a different person now--with reeeeaally bad senior-itis.

seriously: in my classes sometimes i get this huge urge to jump up in the middle of lecture and scream a 'hurray-i've-been-accepted-to-tech-scream', and then run around the room flailing my arms, and then all the newly accepted MS0's join me, and we have this big congratulatory mosh-pit of hugs and high-fives and vows of not studying since our ridiculous gpa's largely dont matter for the next couple of months.

fortunately, i haven't actually done it... yet.

i kind of feel like a different person now--with reeeeaally bad senior-itis.

I feel you- I am actually the only one from my UG so far to be accepted to med school and my friends keep getting onto me because I am always saying, "Do i really need to study for that test- will they care if I get a C in Plant Morphology" I have so many things I have wanted to do in UG and so I am trying to get them all done- ski trip, road-trip with friends (maybe to FL), go to the doctor I nanny for's lake house and do nothing for a long weekend, etc!

Seriously someone should call a doctor cuz I would be the wikipedia example of senioritis right now! I am counting down the weeks til graduation 🙂

eh, i'm still here, just lurking, haven't really felt like I had any useful input for ya'll. But didn't I say spring training was the wknd of the 17th in april? That's what we decided on and now we're just slowly getting it together. We aren't really in any hurry since it's so far away.

As far as being excited about wanting to start I'd say to have as much fun as you possibly can while you can. This gets hella old hella quick. I can't wait for summer...

alright, I got a question. I was looking for a tech medicine/school of medicine or something similar shirt to get my mother for her birthday, I think she's a bit more excited than I am about all of this.

however, this is all i've found anywhere to order online. ttuhsc bookstore

has anyone found, or know of anywhere else?

My cousin got me one at the Varsity bookstore in Lubbock... Red Raider Outfitters (other main tshirt place) doesn't have them. Don't know if you are going up there anytime soon but they are there just not online.

I am doing the same for my dad's bday and making him a certificate saying I will bringing him one home from my trip to Lubbock in early March (his bday is next week)
