How big is the class? I thought A&M was 170, and so Tech is...?

yup 140 for us, but then for 3rd and 4th years you are with an even smaller group, like 50 people.

haha, i'll be honest... this video is pretty much a verbatim exposition of the ag's worldview on football life this year.

though, im slightly suprised this was posted by a natural raider (ie not a 'grafted-in' one like most of us are about to be next year) 👍 🙂

(ps - 15 posts!)

That movie was pretty funny!

Did anyone take a taxi from the airport to the medical school on interview day??? If so got any idea how much the fare was??? I am flying in and my cousin who lives there is in class so I have to decide if I want to take a cab or wait for her to get out.

Thanks!

You're not spoiled... my aunt and uncle came up from DFW from mine to see me (and their daughter lol)... I have a couple cousins and friends in Lubbock but it seems everyone is in class when my flight lands around 1pm lol... I might just wait and do some reading or something.

Congrats to all of you. I'm a graduating 4th year now and have to say that Texas Tech is much more than I thought it would be. It's been great to me and I'm sure it'll be great to you guys!

Uh oh, you'll have an MD/MBA... Someone is sure to come around and berate you for it!

Congrats though! Must be a great feeling to know graduation is coming up..

hey guys, nice to meet all of you. i was hoping you guys could help me out with something. i got the email from tech telling us to send in final transcripts, but i was wondering what that included.

i am a non-traditional student and finished a post-bacc program last year to do all my premed prerequisites. does tech just want my undergrad transcripts that have my degree/graduation date listed, or do they want my post-bacc stuff with my prerequisites on it, or do they want both? since i've been to a couple different schools in my academic career, i'm a bit confused by what they mean by "final transcript" and what they want me to send in, as i thought TMDSAS already had everything. is tech just wanting to verify i graduated, or do they want to check that i finished all the prerequisites? hopefully y'all can help, thanks!

Hi Limerick. I'm pretty sure you should send everything in (post bacc included). They say final transcript because for most of us our transcript that shows we graduated from undergrad will be the last (and most updated). TMDSAS doesn't forward the actual transcript though (as far as I understand) which is why they ask for the actual transcript. Anyway, i'd just send any and all transcripts that show you were enrolled in school to be safe, it can't hurt anyway.

thank you for the reply. the problem is getting all my transcripts again, and i was hoping i might be able to minimize the trouble if i knew there was only one specific transcript i needed to send in. does anyone else know anything?

I would also lean towards saying send it all in- most schools can do a transcript request though the internet or phone... but the only people who could give you would be the office of admissions- give em a call or email Amy Doty.

i think they just sent out a generic letter to everyone to include everything they might need from us. did yours mention that " some of you may be taking classes in the summer to fulfill degree requirements........"?

It's been 2 weeks since i sent in my CBC. No news. how do you check your status?

if i remember correctly they don't really let you know that they got anything from you; i remember sending everything and just assumed that they'd eventually let me know if they didn't get it.

So everyone mailed in that form for the CBC? It seemed like everyone was turning everything around in 2 days...

I mailed mine in... it seemed like by the time I got anything from Tech the deadline listed as like 3 days after it made it to me in Atlanta...

Did anyone get the letter about volunteering for the Pediatric Diabetes camp? Anyone planning on doing that?

I got the letter. Sounds like it would be a good experience and a chance to work with some of the faculty before school starts. Do you know if we would have to get our own lodging? And, where is Wayside?

The Diabetes Camp is a lot of fun, but VERY intense. You and 2-3 other med/nursing students will be in charge of 8-16 kids. You will all sleep in a large cabin full of bunk beds and community showers. Housing and food are all provided. While there you will choose a calorie diet and be expected to adhere to it - make an impression on the kids. Your main duties are to watch your group of kids and participate in all activities (hiking, swimming, kickball, etc.).

The really difficult part comes at bedtime. While 1 counselor puts your kids to bed, the other 2-3 counselors meet with the pedi-endocrinologist or the NP to talk about the insulin needs/glucose levels of each of your students (you keep track of glucose levels throughout the day). You may adjust insulin levels daily. When adjusted, the doc/NP will often ask you to check certain kids' glucose levels at midnight and 3 a.m. This means most of the counselors will stay up until midnight for the first check and then some if not all will wake up for 3 a.m. checks.

The goal is to find the perfect insulin settings for all the kids for the next year in 1 week. This often results in over/under compensating on insulin levels. A few 3a.m. checks involved seizures, profuse sweating, etc. of different children. Some nights you may not sleep but 2 hours. We often had to rotate 1 counselor through napping shifts during the day. Some groups had easy kids and few problems. Mine had multiple problems on a daily basis.

Also, my group of kids combined resulted in 3 broken bones......monkey bars are NOT a good idea apparently. I think they are banned now, but not sure. Oh and Wayside is north of Lubbock nearish Amarillo.

All in all, it is a great experience. While you won't interact with Tech faculty much at all, you will get a fun experience added to your med school CV. If you are looking for an easy 1 week vacation, this is not for you. If you love kids and the outdoors, this is a great way to learn about Diabetes and lose some weight keeping up with all those midgets.

My favorite quote from the camp:
Me: Jake, are you hungry yet?
Jake: Um yeah, I'm a running back duh

I am really wanting to do the camp... I almost did a peds diabetes camp last summer but had to back out when I pulled a muscle in my shoulder and had to switch MCAT dates to the week of camp...

Problem is- I am in Atlanta and don't plan on getting to Lubbock til July. However, I could fly into Amarillo and stay with relatives if I needed to- I wonder if they could hook me up with a ride to camp.

I actually went to Wayside (at the time called Ceta Canyon) for several church retreats. I recall the facilities being really nice (the ones on top of the hill are the best which I would assume is what the camp would use)... there are some good hiking trails (one leads to a waterfall with lots of mud to play in!) and stuff.

If anyone is planning on going and might be willing to meet up with me in Amarillo and let me contribute to gas money let me know please!

Did any of you receive confirmation that your background check was completed through the CBC company? Do they automatically send you a copy of your background check, or do you have to specifically request a copy?

Thanks!

I requested a copy from the CBC company and they emailed it to me. The turnaround was pretty quick.

cbc turnaround was 2 days. Never heard anything from the school about it.

has anyone gotten any sort of packet from Tech yet? i thought i remembered that they were going to send us acceptance packets by the end of February (unless it was just that CBC thing).

I haven't.
I also mailed my 100dollar check a week and half ago FROM LUBBOCK! They haven't received it. Postal service problem or TECH problem?

yeah, i think its USPS. Why does this keep happening to me?😕
mailed something else to friend, priority mail, WITHIN TEXAS! No receipt after a week.

Anyway, i'm still blessed and will stay positive.

I guess your best bet is to call your bank and void the check and since you're in Lubbock drive over to the school and hand deliver it...good luck! :xf:

So just out of curiosity, did anyone interview on Aug 15th? It would be neat if I had actually talked to some of ya'll before and didn't realize it 🙂

I will do that. actually, i'll send someone out there to do it. I'm back in Midland now.

Interview date 09/21

Man, that camp sounds rough, based on TexasPhysician's description. I thought it would be a vacation, but it sounds like so much stress that I'd need to take a vacation to recover from this 'vacation' of a camp.

Waking kids up at 3am just to poke them with a needle sounds really awful. 😱

I think it sounds rough but I was a camp counselor at a summer long camp as well as a special needs camp so I already knew what the job is like... and yes I usually need a day or two to recover from a 1 week camp.

At least you are waking them up and staying up for a reason... I worked a Crohns camp and one of the days was color war- a HUGE event where the camp is split in 2 and there are lots of competitions (physical, spirit, and mental). Well the "color god" assigns each camper and counselor a color while they sleep... my campers wanted to figure out how this happens so they stayed up almost all night...they didn't know that I had the color assignments and was waiting on them to sleep to assign them... I had to wait til 5am to tie those blasted bandannas to their beds and had to be up and ready to go at 7am... talk about a rough night!

hey guys, it looks like spring training is actually going to be the weekend of April 24th, I guess they changed the date during that meeting I missed, but we got an email about it a couple of days ago and it'll be 24th-26th. As far as a break down of the days and activities scheduled, i don't know what they are, you'll be getting something in the mail eventually and it'll tell you all you need to know.

I interviewed on the last day-1/9/09. I remember them telling us that just because we were the last int didn't mean that they felt sorry for us and that we had no chance of getting in and that some of us would be there this fall. Guess they weren't lying!🙂

I saw on the website that they will be mailing us a packet next week!

For those of us who are currently employed, have you contacted financial aid about an adjusted aid package since we will obviously not have our current income next year.

not sure what your referring to. haven't looked to much into it since I haven't heard back after submitting my fafsa. Just figured there might be a chance I would have to take out a few more of the not so good loans.

interviewed 12/5
