Ok, You've just completed your first interview. You gave it your all and you think it went well. It's probably a good idea to send a thank you letter. If so, what is the best time to do that. Do you have one ready and just add the person's name, do you go home after the interview and type one up, or do you wait a week or two then send one. Has anybody had this experience and if so when is a good time to send one. Also any tips on what to write on one or anything related are welcome.

Hope this doesn't turn into another send or not-to-send thread.

Don't wait weeks. Do it now. A full letter is probably not necessary. The thought and effort is shown just as well with a simple hand-written card. A full letter could easily turn into a please-pick-me or I-really-want-to-go-there plea. As for the email option, I'm personally not a fan.

What would you say to them if you ran into them on the street tomorrow? That's one way to approach it.

If you are going to write one, it best come straight from the heart. Why send one pre-written letter with the only thing changing is the name and address at the top? If the interview truly went well, there should be something unique that you can mention in the card (i.e. the thing you said, X, really struck me as something special blah blah blah).

As good as things go (or not), I tend to forget. If I were you, I'd send my notes out within 1-2 days of the interview.

Also, as jeffity mentioned, don't beg. Probably doesn't come off well.

Great advice. Thanks to both.

Stupid question alert!!!

When you're interviewing, do you ask for your interviewers cards? How do you know to whom and where exactly to send your thank you letters? Addressing the card to the schools general address probably wont get it far, ill it?

I'm personally quite bad at remembering names.

Some are quite nice. Interviewers at ucla gave out their business cards. I was surprised.

Most give out their cards, but in the case they don't write down their names before or after the interview, and even if it is a hard name to spell get it as close as possible and then by googling it or looking it up on the school website you should be able to find their names.
