The Canadian Applicant Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was totally excited too when I saw something from Guelph in my inbox. It clearly stated that answering the survey would in no way affect your application so I'm guessing it's up to you if you want to answer it. I finished it and it wasn't very long at all. A lot of demographic questions like your age range, ethnicity, etc. Hope that helps! Hopefully we'll get a real response from them soon as well!! 🙂

Okay...so I totally gotm y co-worker to call the grad secretary and ask about when we should be hearing about interviews. She said that the department has been reviewing the files since last Tuesday, and this means that you should hear about interviews ANY TIME. And that February is interview month. She also said that if you don't hear anything that you could contact the CPDAE departmental rep (Dr. Morrongiello). I don't know if I have the nerve to do that just yet!

EEK.

Wait a sec...so you should call if you don't hear anything by when? Next week?

Does anyone know if York interviews for the masters program in addition to the PhD?

She was not clear. But she said any time now thorughout february. And she specfically said "after awhile, if you still havent heard anything, you can try to email Dr.M and she will let you know where your application stands". I think this week/next week is too early...so maybe the second week of february?

From what I hear from the grad students at york, it is up to each professor. Some profs interview and some don't. There is no real structure or interview day.

Hey does anyone know if all the Canadian schools even do interviews? I have no idea if Dalhousie, Ottawa, or Windsor even interview? Has anyone heard anything?

Has anyone heard back from SFU or UBC yet? Also, does UBC even do interviews?

UBC and SFU take FOREVER to get back to anyone. It'll be a long wait.

I'm pretty sure they do interviews.

Thanks for the info. I figured that SFU invites should be going out soon because the interview dates are Feb 21 and 22. UBC doesn't list dates though.

Has anyone heard back from Concordia? I was really shocked (and scared lol) when I saw that phone interviews/invites started on Jan 12 considering the due date was the 10th. Is it a rolling application?? Can anyone shed some light on this?? If you can I'd really appreciate it🙂

I've only heard from the one person who has gotten an official invite there so far. I applied there too and was really shocked that someone heard 2 days after the deadline.

Hopelesspsych - I haven't heard anything about Dalhousie.

Phew..that's a relief! I couldn't believe that when I read it on the master list...thanks for that.....let's keep our fingers crossed!!🙂

I have applied to both, but have only been contacted by SFU because of missing info. Has anyone else applied to UofC or know about their decision procedures?

I also haven't heard anything yet. And when I contacted my POI, not last week but the week before, she said that she hadn't started reviewing and that decisions would be made over the next 5 weeks (which would mean by the 3rd week of February). There is still hope I guess!

Dal does not do interviews and are still in the process of reviewing. All decisions should be made by the end of the month.

Anyone here applying to Canadian schools but NOT for the clinical program? I'm applying to some cognitive and developmental psych programs & I don't know if the interview process is similar or not, but I had an interview with a professor from York about 2 weeks ago and another interview coming up next week with a professor from Brock. So far thats it...haven't heard anything from Waterloo yet (my #1 choice).
Good luck everyone!

I just got an email invite tonight for interviews for the Applied Developmental Emphasis Clinical Program at Guelph. The interview date is this Friday (the 8th)...which is soooo soon!! I'm not sure if there are any other scheduled dates...just wanted to give a heads up to those who've applied there!! 🙂

Congrats!

Can I ask if it looked like a form email sent to numerous people or whether it was an email specifically addressed to you? I only asked because I applied there too and am wondering if I can take it as a rejection that I didn't get an email too, especially since the interview date is 4 days away.

Good luck on the interview. Let us know how it goes! 😀

I applied to a non-clinical program at York and haven't heard anything yet. The faculty in my area have met me previously and so it's been implied that I wouldn't need interviews. Hence, I'm just waiting on final decisions. Please post if you hear anything. The waiting is making me crazy.

Thanks🙂

Don't lose hope yet! It did seem personalized as she (the Admissions Coordinator) stated that I was "assigned" to February 8th...so there might be multiple interview dates.

If I find out anything more I'll let you know for sure..my fingers are crossed for you!!

Hi All!

Congrats on the Interview at Guelph Psycgirl!

I also was notified last night . I was given the choice of the 8th or the 11th...so I took the 11th (I need time to buy an outfit). It is too bad we aren't going in on the same day.

Also, I received some news from the York Clinical Developmental Program. It was not an official invite but my POI (who is actually a prof I had before) said that two profs are interested in interviewing me and that the interviews will take place on February 25th during the open house. BUT no official invite has been given yet....so I don't think all the decisions are made.

York is really random and some profs do not even interview at all. York is definetly one of the schools in which hope should remain until the end of march.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! MAY MORE GOOD NEWS FOLLOW FOR US ALL!

Thanks! Congrats to you too! That is too bad you won't be there on the same day! I wish I was given a choice...it just said I was selected for the 8th (I don't have a suit yet either:S..which means I have to go shopping today or tomorrow!). I don't really know what to expect with this one seeing as though you don't get assigned a specific advisor until after being admitted to the program. I mentioned 2 POIs in my statement...are you just reading up on a select few to prepare for the interview?

Aaack! You've already heard from York? When do you think the "official" invites will be extended for the open house?😱

Hey!

I don't know when the official invites will come out...and I assume they will wait till they firm up their decisions before they send out official invites to anybody. I would not panic.

ALSO...this is for the clinical developmental program so each program will most likely do things differently. My thesis prof is a prof in the Social Psyc department at York and last year she just met with her potential grad student candidate without a formal day involved. York has a very non-structured process from what I have heard from the grad students.

Hope this helps. Good luck everyone!

Well I almost jumped when I saw this email until I realized it really means nothing. Anyway, update on USask.

"We are happy to have received your application to pursue graduate
studies in the Department of Psychology at the University of
Saskatchewan. It is now complete and will be considered by the Graduate
Admissions Review Committee soon. We will try to let you know our
decision by
April 1 (internal conditions permitting).

Thank you very much for your interest in our program."

Doesn't sound like they are planning to do interviews. Weird cause I swear that they did them last year.

Did anybody here apply to the new Ryerson program?

I did. The application due date was pretty late though so I didn't expect to hear anything yet. I also applied with a POI that's super popular so I'm not holding my breath! I'll let you know if I hear anything either way though!🙂

Dang! And I was hoping that Ryerson would be somewhat less competitive since it's a newer program and all. I'd still love to go, though!

Oh don't fret! I don't know if the program itself is competitive..I just know my top choice POI is extremely popular that's all!

Hehe, I think mine are too. Le sigh - the waiting has officially started to drive me insane.

To those who applied to Dal, has anyone received any sort of confirmation of their application? I paid the fee, sent my stuff off and have not heard anything...just getting a little nervous.

Have you tried calling the admissions department or the grad secretary? They can usually assure you that they received everything.

I did too. And...I know for certain that as of last week the profs did not have any of our applications. They won't get them till this week or next. There is time ahead of us still.

Also..for anyone who applied to Windsor:

My friend who was accepted last year was notified for an interview mid-February (2nd or 3rd week). So there is some time to go there as well.

Speaking of new programs, did anyone apply to Lakehead? It's Ph.D program just received accreditation last year.

If not, does anyone know about Lakehead's program or the university itself?

Of the five of us in the cohort they interviewed one and only because she already lived in Saskatoon. I was pseudo-interviewed over the phone but it was nothing special.

(and with that little snippet of knowledge I'm off to Albuquerque for a week so I'll cross my fingers for you while I'm there, haha)

You're applying to work with G.F., right? He's the advisor of one of my cohort members and I was talking to her about you and she said that I could give you her email if you have any questions about him. Would that be helpful at all?

Thanks reassuring 🙂 Thanks for letting me know that. I thought everyone was interviewed there.

I'm going to PM you.

PM'ed back.

I sent my friend an email so she knows not to delete it when you write to her. We get about 30 emails a day since we're on so many lists so we're used to deleting anything that isn't from each other or our profs (but shh don't tell anyone, haha)

Okay...I'm going to bring it up, although I didn't want to before because I didn't want to jinx it...Anybody have any insight to OISE? I believe they interview, but I don't think they usually notify applicants of interviews for another week or so. That's all I know.

I think I'll try a different approach with OISE- I think I'll just start saying that I'm going there, even before I hear anything from them. You know that if you want it to happen you have to put it out there idea? I'll try that today. I'm going to OISE. Woowoo! Watch out for me, Toronto. Here comes Ducky straight from the left coast! It's one of the only good possibilities I've got going...don't laugh too much!

I think you guys ought to try it, too. Where are you guys going to go?

Hehe....Yes....I like the way you think!

I went to OISE's open house this year and spoke to a master's student and asked her when she heard about interviews...and she said mid-february. The people at the open house said that the OISE process involves everyone's application being reviewed independently by two faculty members...from there they rank you and make a list of "top 20 applicants"...they then discuss as a group who they want etc. Then....POIs interview. Also, last year's thread (which I came across on a random search, I have since been unable to find again) reports interviews being given out on February 16th....

So yes...a week, if not two ahead of us. (Atleast, that is what I am clinging to).

OMG, I don't know about you guys, but this seems like a ridiculously fair way to make admissions decisions. It seems like a lot of thought and care for graduate institution! Thank you psyc353, that was really helpful. I have a slight urge to email my POI and remind her about myself- it's been over 2 months since I had contact from her. She might be keeping "my name in mind," but for how long???

I just got an email from my POI at Queen's that says while they don't do formal interviews, she would like to schedule a time to chat on the phone tomorrow. So, profs at Queen's have our applications now!

I just got a call from Simon Fraser extending an interview invite..they do either an in-person interview or a phone interview...interview dates are Feb 21 and 22.

OMG I just missed a call from the graduate assistant at SFU! I hope that means I'm getting an interview too. Her phone just keeps going to voicemail now though.

She didn't leave a message?? That's just cruel!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!! 🙂

Congrats!!! If you don't mind, could you PM me your POI? I applied there and would like to get a feel for my status. Don't worry about it if you aren't comfortable.

Well she left a message, but it just said that it was about my application. She called me back about an hour ago though and I did get an interview! I'm so relieved because I only applied to 2 programs (stupid, I know).

I got the same voice message on my phone, and I also got an interview invite at SFU! This is the first school I've heard anything back from.

I know other people applied to York, so I thought I'd mention that I got a request for a phone interview from my POI today. I applied to the Brain, Behavior, and Cognitive Sciences masters program (since, as we've discussed, you can't apply to the PhD program without one). I'm very excited!
