The Canadian Applicant Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know other people applied to York, so I thought I'd mention that I got a request for a phone interview from my POI today. I applied to the Brain, Behavior, and Cognitive Sciences masters program (since, as we've discussed, you can't apply to the PhD program without one). I'm very excited!

Congrats! I'll add it to the list 🙂

I got word last night from my POI that official notices will go out next week for some of the Psy areas (No word on Clinical). Did I mention -

I'M IN!! WOOHOOOOOOOOOO

My best wishes that everyone else on the board will be saying the same soon.

How did you hear? When I was trying to schedule a time to speak to my POI by phone, she said it would only take 15 minutes. I thought it would be a phone interview, but that would be a really short interview. I don't want to get my hopes up, but...

Has anyone heard anything from the University of Victoria?

Hmmm...Not since December 10th. I wrote back to my POI on December 15th, and never heard from her again. I know that they do invite people to interview, at least sometimes. I don't believe they have one big interview day like some programs, but I'm not really sure how it goes. No one on SDN actually posted or admitted to getting an offer or interview there, except a friend of a member. Below is a post that was in response to a similar question last year, from a very nice Canadian. I was waitlisted there last year, and was not rejected until April 1st (although my rejection letter didn't arrive until April 7th, which is why I was still posting about it on April 4th last year).

Can anyone else who applied to UBC check their online application status and tell me what it says? Mine says: The application status is not currently available for this application. Contact your Department for more information.

I'm just worried that maybe my full application wasn't received and they don't answer the phone so I can't find out.

Congrats!! Will you be accepting the offer? I applied to the developmental and cognitive processes MA and received notice last night that I have been admitted.. wohoooo 🙂
Best of luck to everyone!!!

Hey all,

I received an email yesterday from a prof at York unofficially inviting me to the open house on Feb 25th. It said the actual invites haven't been sent yet but she was just giving me a heads-up so I can make arrangements to attend. She said the open house will run all day with presentations in the morning and one-on-one interviews in the afternoon. Thought you might want to know!

Good luck everyone! 🙂

Ooops! Should have mentioned, the above post is regarding the clinical-developmental program.

I heard from my POI but they know me so it wasn't unexpected that I didn't have to an interview.

I am accepting.... Perhaps we can chat through private channels.

Got a phone invite to interview with a professor at Ryerson for the clinical program...don't think they have set dates...I have a feeling it's up to the individual prof.

For those of you who are interviewing at SFU are you doing a phone interview or in person interview? If you are doing an in person interview which day did you choose?

I couldn't afford to travel there so I opted for a phone interview...I called and emailed Anita on Monday and she told me she'd get back to me with a time/date but I haven't heard from her yet:S

I've been reading these forums for a long time, and am so happy to have found a thread with people applying to similar schools! I'm doing the in-person interview with SFU on February 21. What day will you be there karma?

Also, has anyone applied to Calgary?

I got a call from Lakehead today asking for more information.

They have just started reviewing applications. They aren't doing interviews but will be contacting people at the beginning of March by phone if you are accepted.

Did anyone else apply there or know about their program or the university?

I'm going to be there on the 21st as well (from 10:30 to 1:30 I believe)!

I e-mailed her to ask a question today and I got an auto reply saying she is out of the office until Monday. That's probably why she hasn't replied yet 🙂

Wow, I wish I'd known about this thread back in January! I'm applying to Developmental programs across the country, two of which are Clinical - York's (CD) and Windsor's. I've not heard anything from Windsor yet, just that they have my application materials, but I'm invited to the open house on the 25th along with some of you 🙂

I had a phone interview with my POI (cute acronym btw 😛) at Brock a couple of weeks ago, and she said they'd be making decisions last week...but I haven't heard anything since then :/

UVic e-mailed me to clarify something on my application, and said the files were being forwarded to faculty this week.

I got the invite to Western's open house thing, but they clearly stated it has nothing to do with the admissions process, and I've been to London a few times before, so not sure if I'm gonna make the trek...besides which, if I can get tickets, Guelph's College Royal Ball is that night (my alma mater <3).

Oh and Queen's bugged me about my recommendation letters a few weeks ago, but not a word from them since.

Other schools I've applied to that haven't gotten back to me yet:

SFU
Carleton
Concordia
McGill

Hi All!

I just got an email from Windsor (adult clinical). They are holding phone interviews over the next few days and must have all phone interviews complete by February 19th (so soon...). I am supposed to wait for someone from the department to contact me and set up this phone interview.

So....the process is beginning at Windsor...

Also, I received my official invite to the York U Clinical-Dev Open House/Interview day (Feb 25th) yesterday.

good luck with everything all...

I have still yet to hear anything from:
McGill, Concordia, Queens, and OISE

I just found out that I have been accepted into the Social-Personality area at York!! I'm very excited!!

I also found out that for the M.A. program in Counselling Psych at OISE, there are no interviews. Letters are sent out at the end of march-beginning of april.

York Clinical-Developmental is not done contacting everyone on their shortlist. Also, some professors are apparently not participating in Interview Day. I also wanted to caution people-- be prepared for an interview whenever someone happens to call. If you are not prepared, make an excuse immediately and ask if they can call back another time.

Worst. phone interview. ever. 🙁

Good point. If I hadn't been at work when my York POI called I would not have had the time to compose myself and come up with some semi intelligent things to say later that night (mainly compose myself though, since it's my "reach" school).

Sorry to hear you were caught off guard, I once had a job interview go that way and needless to say I didn't get the position 😛

Oh dear! It's nice to hear that people are still being contacted but not nice to hear about being caught off guard. Yeesh! The Clin-Developmental program has 13 core faculty plus others...so it is one of the largest, I guess that might be why there are such differences in contacting styles?

The prof may understand that he/she caught you completely without prep. It may have went better than you think!

For all of you who applied to York (clinical-dev.), who was your POI? Anyone contacted by Muller?

Hey Karma, I just checked mine, and it says the same thing. Sorry it took me so long to get around to checking mine.

Here's another weird thing...I applied to the Doctoral Program, but it says master's program on my online application page- maybe they merged my application to the master's program because it's like the other Canadian universities where you're admitted as a master's student first? I have no idea. I don't know what's going on. Whatever. They'll figure it out. You can't talk to anybody at the university anyway.

Man, Canadian schools really throw the cat into the pigeons when it comes to waiting to hear from them...

Thanks for checking 🙂 Hopefully we won't be waiting much longer.

Okay...I was expecting to hear from OISE last week...I didn't hear from them on Friday or over the weekend...and here it is Monday now and still nothing...And no one else has mentioned they received word from them yet either. I am tempted to contact my POI, but these last few days of not knowing one way or the other are so blissful...I just don't want to know quite yet if it isn't good news.

If anyone else has heard from OISE, I suppose I would appreciate knowing...

You guys might not hear from Canadian grad schools this week, a lot of us are currently on reading week so some Universities are closed.

Just a little FYI.

How was your trip?

I, and everyone I know who has applied to OISE hasn't heard anything yet. So, I am still holding out hope....for some time this week.

Thanks for the heads up 🙂

How was your trip?

The trip was awesome, and just what I needed since my old advisor was there who's like my surrogate mom. haha.

Now I'm back in Winnipeg for some fun family time... uh I mean, "reading."

I check this thread religiously and I'm not even applying. I'm officially a dork.

Thanks! That's the best news I've heard in weeks. Just a little nugget of hope! Not sure I've ever wanted something more than I want to go to OISE. In spite of all the competitive programs I've applied to elsewehere, OISE really is the greatest match for my interests past, present, and future. It meets all my professional needs and goals...so why don't they just pick me already?!?

That's it...I'm gonna rock it again this week...I'm going to Toronto.

I was accepted to the clinical psych phd program yesterday via an email from the grad secretary.

Congrats! Seems like a really swift process! Was it high on your list of schools?

This Thread does not appear to be filled with all of the angst, melodrama, and downright depression which pervades the U.S. threads. Even the long lost RayneeDeigh can be found hanging out here. I enjoy reading about all of these schools and Canadian cities I have never visited. Keep up the good work. I am going to start enjoying your Canadian excitement vicariously.

Sorry, but I have to get something out of my system. Ay, is it true that if you get any kind of mailing from a Canadian psychology school, rejection letters included, that have a mouse in the envelope that you are gauranteed admission and full funding/ generous stipend for your entire graduate education? I better stop now before I get deported.

Good luck to all Canadians from your American (whoops, strike that!) U.S. friend!

😆 what?!? Soooo random!

Thanks for hanging out with us northern folk 😀

I'm not long-lost, I've just been busy killing bugs (still) and trying not to turn into a homicidal maniac and kill my advisor.

Plus the majority of threads these days bug the poo out of me so I like hanging in here with cool present and future Canadian students 😀

Anyone apply (or have experience) with the following schools (primarily in the area of clinical psych.):

The only school I can comment on is SFU. I just had my interview there today; I think it went well. They have interviews going on tomorrow as well.

I applied to York and Queen's... This is all elsewhere on the thread, but I can repeat it for easy access.

York Clinical-Developmental is having an interview day next week, though it seems that not all profs are participating (at least one did phone interviews instead). York Adult-Clinical does interviews at the discretion of individual profs, and so far no one on the board has heard from them... Though these interviews should be happening now/soon, if they're on the same schedule as last year.

Queen's does not conduct formal interviews, though I was contacted about two weeks ago for an informal phone interview with my prof of interest. She said that decisions would be made by the committee after all profs made their recommendations, and that applicants should hear in late February or early March.

I hope that helps! Let me know if you have more questions about my experience with either school.

I can only comment on the clinical program at Ryerson. I was contacted recently for a phone interview from my POI. It was pretty informal and I think it went well. They are supposed to be making admission decisions within the next few weeks. They said we should find out by the end of March at the latest.

I can comment on three of those schools. I've been doing phone interviews for Simon Fraser (the last one is this weekend). I was contacted by a prof to interview with Ryerson on the 26th (but I think that differs from prof to prof) and I was just contacted by my POI for the York Adult-Clinical track yesterday for an interview next Wednesday (as mentioned earlier the individual profs are contacting students so I have no clue what the timeline is like). Hope that helps🙂

Thanks for the replies. It definitely helps!

To the people invited to York's Open House on Monday, have you set specific meeting times/places with your POIs? The schedule just says that 1pm onwards is meeting time, arranged prior individually...but my POI didn't so much as hint at any such arrangement.

They did give me standard meeting times (i am meeting with two). Perhaps e-mail your POI today and ask if a schedule has been set?

Also, I just received an on the spot, no notice telephone interview from OISE in the middle of my work day. Pretty intense.....I feel westernsky's pain.

But I am glad to have had the call. Just so everyone knows I think it is today and early next week to hear from OISE.

Good luck all!

Congrats to everyone getting call and acceptances 🙂

There are still tons of schools that haven't been posted about here yet.

So I can post more info (hopefully) does anyone have any info on:

UVic
UBC
Trinity Western
UNBC
Calgary
Saskatchewan
Regina
Manitoba
Ottawa
Lakehead
New Brunswick

I think that's all of them...

Hello all. This is actually my first post and it shall be an informative one. I can comment on three of the above schools:

UBC:
According to the grad secretary, there is NO interview process (neither in-person nor telephone). They are hoping to send out acceptance/rejection letters in one or 2 weeks.

Calgary: My POI conducted a phone interview with me in the first week of Feb. They finish the process very early, supposedly by mid Feb.

Manitoba: Much like UBC, this school does not interview. They send out acceptance/rejection letters mid March. According to them, they are in the process of calculating GPAs for all the applicants right now.

schools that I've applied to but yet to hear from:

McGill:
The secretary says that some POIs have already made their decision, while others are still in the process but will likely do so in the next 2 weeks.

Concordia: They have a meeting on March 6th. So, if i don't hear anything from them by then, its a probable rejection.

Official Rejections:
Waterloo
