The Canadian Applicant Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello all. This is actually my first post and it shall be an informative one. I can comment on three of the above schools:

UBC:
According to the grad secretary, there is NO interview process (neither in-person nor telephone). They are hoping to send out acceptance/rejection letters in one or 2 weeks.

Calgary: My POI conducted a phone interview with me in the first week of Feb. They finish the process very early, supposedly by mid Feb.

Manitoba: Much like UBC, this school does not interview. They send out acceptance/rejection letters mid March. According to them, they are in the process of calculating GPAs for all the applicants right now.

schools that I've applied to but yet to hear from:

McGill:
The secretary says that some POIs have already made their decision, while others are still in the process but will likely do so in the next 2 weeks.

Concordia: They have a meeting on March 6th. So, if i don't hear anything from them by then, its a probable rejection.

Official Rejections:
Waterloo

Wow, I'm surprised UBC doesn't even interview. Now I'm going to be checking my mailbox obsessively.

Just to clarify, the Brock program I applied to isn't clinical!! It's in Life-Span Development. And I spoke to one of the current grad students today, who said she saw a bunch of admission letters sitting on the secretary's desk, looking like they were ready to be mailed out...

Hi! I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the acceptance status of:

Dal Clinal PhD
Mount St. Vincent School Psyc
UBC School Psyc

I know someone on this thread already got an acceptance letter from dal....does this mean all of their acceptance letters have gone out? Do I have to wait till others decline to maybe be considered????

They did give me standard meeting times (i am meeting with two). Perhaps e-mail your POI today and ask if a schedule has been set?

Also, I just received an on the spot, no notice telephone interview from OISE in the middle of my work day. Pretty intense.....I feel westernsky's pain.

But I am glad to have had the call. Just so everyone knows I think it is today and early next week to hear from OISE.

Good luck all!
I was just wondering which program at OISE has interviews??

Thanks everyone 🙂

I updated the front page with the new info. Do you guys want me to add a section for official rejections that have gone out, or do you think it's unnecessary?

Hey All,

I just received an email from my POI at Concordia. Who wants to interview over the phone tomorrow. She said that profs are contacting people over the next week (which makes sense with the March meeting date). EEK!

Also, I got my first acceptance yesterday.....Windsor Clinical Psychology 🙂.

Congratulations about Windsor, that's awesome!! 👍 I'm also glad to hear that Concordia is just starting to contact people now. I had actually given up hope on hearing from them....now I can wait till next weekend to officially give up!

Would that be Windsor's adult clinical or child clinical program?

I have an interview with a Ryerson prof this week....just individually, not as part of an interview day. Maybe this Q doesn't belong here, but I should still wear a suit, right?

I have an interview with two profs there this week too...I think it's up to you on the suit issue. I highly doubt they'd look at you horribly if you wore dresspants and a nice sweater/dress-shirt combo...but that's just my opinion. I have a suit but I'm not sure if I'll wear it or not either.

I read in a "how to get into grad school" book that business suits are only really required for business school, and that in other disciplines, you can get away with business casual attire.

When I interviewed, I didn't wear a suit....
When I interviewed at Guelph, I did, and the majority of people didn't have suits on. I have my interview at York tomorrow morning...and I am leaning towards no suit jacket...I just don't feel very comfortable, so I might just do business casual.

Windsor was for Adult Clinical.

Thanks for all the info, MrPsych! You're the first person I've encountered on this thread who's also applied to Calgary. I was under the impression they did not conduct interviews as part of their process. I met with my POI there before the application deadline. Did they give you any information on when they might be informing applicants of acceptances/rejections?

Has anybody else heard from OISE?

I'm curious to hear if anyone else has been contacted. I haven't been yet...I usually put my home phone number on my school applications since the phone system is kind of complicated at our clinic...and I don't use my cell phone all that regularly...I wonder if they've called my home? No one else has been at home today...no one to tell me if anyone's called...no messages on my voicemail or cell phone...nothing in my inbox...our postal mail doesn't come until almost 5 PM.........

I can't stand it.

I wonder if anyone out there who has applied to UBC (this year or in the past) has ever had contact with a POI? Since they don't do interviews at all...I wonder how frequently their faculty actually comminucate with applicants before making decisions...or maybe they don't? It would seem crazy, but what do I know? I contacted my POI (late in the application season, I'll admit), but never heard back from her.

Hope everyone else is holding up okay! I am so glad some of you have received offers! It must be fabulous.

You're welcome; I understand how ambiguous the entire process can be, so any information is appreciated.
My POI said that they are suppose to forward their decisions to the clinical department by the 15th of Feb. BUT I wasn't informed as to when the applicants get this information. If I had to guess, I think they are gonna send it in the next 2-3 weeks.
Secondly, I think this goes for grad school in general, and UofC in particular, but the entire process if very individualized; some profs prefer to interview candidates, others put a lot of faith into the information submitted with the application and make their decisions based on that. So, I don't think there is a rule about interviewing. Its simply up to the specific professor.

Nothing??? Nothing happening at all???

I forgot to post this last week, but I was accepted into the MSc/PhD Developmental Science program at U Alberta! Letter came by email (followed by snail mail) from the grad secretary 02/15.

However, no word from any clinical programs recently... Does anyone have any updates on UVic? They seem to be doing a great job at being silent.

Oh, and thanks again MrPsych! You've managed to appease my worries a little about not hearing from Calgary yet.🙂

I've been accepted at Brock for their Life-Span Development program! I'm waiting on word from York (clin-dev) before I make a move, but Brock's funding is more generous...York should be sending out notices within the next couple of weeks though, according to the director (which anyone at the open house will have heard)!

Any news in the past few days? (I'm especially interested in York Clinical-Developmental and in Queen's.)

I know Waterloo has recently extended some offers and some waitlist notifications for their clinical program (I have friends who applied there).

For any other SFU hopefuls, I have a friend who is already in the clinical program there who said their professor (who incidentally is my POI) mentioned that a "meeting about fall applications" (her words, likely a deciding meeting) was happening this week, so decisions may be out soon!:scared:

I was accepted via mail to the U of Calgary program in Clinical Psych. The letter arrived on Thursday.

Good luck to all of you!

I don't know about Queens but one of my friends just had her York interview on Monday (feb 25); dunno if that helps

It would seem that anyone being considered for York's C-D program would have been invited to the open house...beyond that no word on any final decisions have come this way yet :/ I sent my POI a thank you e-mail on Wednesday but no response from her end!

I have received acceptance from a school in Ontario, but I am still interviewing with my 1st choice school this week. I have been on interviews where the POI has asked me where else I have applied/interviewed. If I am asked that in the interview with my 1st choice school, is it advisable to say that I have received an offer but I have not yet accepted because I would like to go to this school?

Also, is it ok to email POIs at schools I'm waiting to hear from to tell them that I've received and offer and to ask about my status?

Anyone have any info on Guelph or McMaster??

Would you feel comfortable telling us what school did offered an acceptance? If not, could you let us know whether or not it is on the acceptance list yet just so we know whether there is some action happening at another school or not.

Thanks 🙂 Good luck at your other interview.

Some profs at USask have started interviewing people but I don't have specifics or anything, in case anyone's interested.

Ahhh! Way to boost my anxiety. Thanks RD! 😛

I reckon that you should steal and burn all the applications except for mine. Lol, that would be fun (at least for me) 🙂

Haha don't worry, your POI seems like the kind of person who would do everything at a leisurely pace. I can't say for sure that he hasn't set the ball in motion, but I'm pretty sure not yet.

No news is still good news. 😀

My cohort is so anxious for this to hurry up and finish so we can know who the new people are. We just had a meeting the other day for our summer practicum placements and we were all so excited not to be the newbies anymore. We're already planning how we're going to be nicer than the other cohorts so nobody hates us.

I have a feeling this week will bring a lot of good and bad news for a lot of us (okay really I'm just hoping so that we can finally move on with our lives!). Whatever the news, I have a few consecutive social events lined up at the end of this week to either celebrate or drown my sorrows 😉

I have a feeling this week will bring a lot of good and bad news for a lot of us...

I hope it is a week of good news! I still have heard NOTHING and I am beginning to become a little down about it. I really thought OISE would come through for me...but perhaps it's not too late yet...I woke up this morning thinking that this ought to be miracle week! A week of miracles and last minute deals! I'll take what I can get.

I have my one and only interview for a PsyD program I'd rather not attend on Friday...and something a little more redeeming would be greatly appreciated.

I think the most defeating thing about applying this year is that I know I'm ready to go to graduate school. Why can't I just go already? Holy cow. +pissed+

Word from York (well, my POI) is that they're making final decisions on placements this week and hope to send out word next week!

Duckygirl, I'm convinced that all this waiting is just grad schools testing our patience, like an initiation 😉 They're already grooming us into cynical grad students!

I keep seeing info on the York Clinical Developmental program, but does anyone know anything about the adult clinical program there? Are they having interviews? Any info would be appreciated!

I think those who applied to the forensic area may have to wait until next week because most of the profs are at a conference this week. I've also heard that they sometimes interview candidates at the conference.

Karma, when I saw that you posted I was a little scared, thinking that you had heard something new from SFU already!

Thanks for the clarification though, I should have mentioned that the prof I was referring to is in the neuropsych specialization. Interviewing at a conference? I wasn't aware that this occurred, yikes!

Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you like that 😛. Yeah, sometimes they interview students at conferences if the student is already going to be there, so they don't have to fly out to Vancouver.

Thanks 🙂 Good luck at your other interview.

Both schools are not on the acceptance list yet. I received an unofficial acceptance from my POI yesterday at my 1st-choice school, but as soon as I receive an official offer I'll let you all know!

I interviewed with a prof for the Adult Clinical Program last week and I've already heard back from her that I won't be offered a spot...so I think it's more on an individualized basis with the adult track. The POIs contact you and you interview with them only (well that was my experience anyways). Hope that helps!

USask has sent out first round offers (not sure if that was by phone, email or snail mail). Second round offers will be made eventually based on responses from these. Doesn't look like they have a concrete waitlist as my status is listed as unknown. Fun.

And still nothing from the University of Victoria???

I haven't heard anything from them, and they don't reply to my emails (or return long distance calls).

I haven't heard anything from them since January, when I was called to clarify something on my application. I've tried to check on the "Mystatus" account they gave me, but I can't seem to find any relevant pages once I log in.

I've not heard anything from them, either. I think I mentioned before that they may not contact anyone until mid March. We could try contacting our POIs via email, but when I did this last year, my email went ignored. I did finally get a response once I was rejected in the first week of April. I do know that they will start sending out rejection letters this month, and not everyone will get one at the same time. I think they reject in groups- many at first, and then they hold on to a few applicants, in the event that enough people refuse their initial offers.

Paul Taylor, the admissions guy, often answers the phone and is rather friensly. You could try calling all the time until he happened to answer the phone and then corner him. I called sometime after the deadline last year to find out what would be done about my application because my main POI was going on sabbatical and would not be taking any new students- he looked up my application for me and told me they would shop it around to the other faculty given that my POI's sabbatical was granted so late in the year. I thought it was a pretty nice interaction, given the circumstances.

Any word from Concordia, anyone? Faculty were to meet today.

Also, those who interviewed with Concordia profs-- could you PM me if your interviews were with Dr. Conway or Dr. Ellenbogen? Thanks!

Bump...

Updates on the first page.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to let those of you know who might be on waitlists after interviewing for York's CD and Windsor's NP programs that I will most likely be declining my offers in the next couple weeks. Just waiting on a bit more info from other schools. So there's still hope for those of you hoping to get off waitlists!

Hi DLPFC! When (date) and how (email, phone?) were you accepted to York C-D? If you're not comfortable revealing on the board, can you PM me? Thanks!

I was on an interview (at a different school) on Friday and happened to be in an elevator with two applicants; one had applied to UVic and had asked me I'd heard anything (he had not) and the other was finishing her undergrad at UVic (loved the school, knew nothing about their grad program).

That's as good as I've got for an update. Lame...I know...
