The Canadian Applicant Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got accepted to the clinical program at University of Manitoba on 3/20 via email and a phone call from my POI. He said the official acceptance letters were sent out that same day but probably wouldn't be received until next week due to the holiday weekend.

I was under the impression that they don't interview there. Am I wrong?

As far as I know they don't interview and was my distinct impression from the grad secretary when I talked to her about a month ago. I think Henri107 may have just got a call from his POI accepting him, which I know a few other Canadian Universities do out of respect when they don't interview, rather than just mailing the acceptance letter.

You are right, they do not interview. However, once my POI got ahold of my application he called me to discuss our interests and tell me more about the program. So in a way he did a phone interview with me, but my guess is that most professors there do not do this.

It's kind of at their discretion. Most profs at the U of M do conduct informal phone interviews but not the way American schools do. Some profs don't bother, but most do once they have a list of a few people they're really interested in.

Wow, sooooo quiet.

Anyone have any updates on acceptances or offers that you are turning down (since I guess it's getting to that time too).

Anyone here still waiting on (rejections) from York University and Ryerson University? I still have yet to hear from both these programs and am curious what the delay is.

I applied to 10 Canadian programs and have only heard back from 2 so far, Queen's and New Brunswick. I think that the first week of April will be busy for rejections.

I also applied to 10 and have only heard back from 5 - York, Brock, Western, Queen's, and Carleton. The rest (McGill, Concordia, Windsor, SFU, Victoria) are taking their sweetass time...

Accepted to York, Brock, & Wilfrid Laurier, waitlisted at Ryerson, and Rejected from Waterloo today by e-mail!
Anyone heard from McMaster??

Windsor finally got around to rejecting me 😀 It's funny, so far I've gotten into the program I had no chance at, and have been rejected by the ones I figured were shoo-ins...this whole grad application process makes no sense 😛

This weekend I declined offers at York, Ryerson, and Windsor....

So waitlist spots should be opening up soon...especially right after April 15th..there must be a whole round of offers going out then.

good luck everyone!

Are you saying you could still receive offers after the 15th? But what if you accept an offer (since you must indicate your decision before the 15th) but then you receive an offer from your top school AFTER the 15th? What happens to the offer you already accepted? Won't it be rude to then decline it?

On a different but related topic, did anyone on here apply for SSHRC masters scholarship?
I was disappointed to learn that my application wasn't sent forward recently. A total blow to my ego.

Yep, you can definitely receive offers after the 15th, though from what I've heard this is rare.

According to CPA/APA regulations, programs SHOULD give their acceptances by April 1st, and students need to accept or decline by April 15th. If it happens that there are spots that open up due to people declining on the 15th the programs can then extend more offers.

There was someone on this board last year who got a call on the 16th I believe and the program gave her like 4 hours to decide so they could move along the list if she didn't want the spot.

If you have already accepted at a different school and it's after the 15th, I think that you are kind of screwed if another program extends an offer, but I'm not 100% sure on this.

Yes, of course you can still receive offers after April 15th. This happens because applicants hold on to offers sometimes until April 15th, and sometimes applicants will hold on to several offers until April 15th...That means that some schools must turn over offers after the deadline. This is not the case at every school, as some schools give out more offers than spots available, thinking they'll have enough people say no.

In terms of where that leaves one who has already accepted an offer...that is a tough spot to be in. Accepting an offer, particularly a funded one, is hard to get out of, but it can be done. Offers after April 15 are more useful for students who did not receive any offers or who turned down any offers they received. Getting word from a school after April 15 for those applicants makes a big difference. Personally, I wouldn't make any bets on getting offered a spot after April 15, and I certainly wouldn't turn down any offers I received with the hope that maybe I'll get an offer from a top-choice school after the deadline.

I guess it depends though, on how badly you want to go to school this fall...would it be worth it to give up what you already have for the chance of an offer you may never receive? For me, at this point, it totally wouldn't be worth it.

I was disappointed to learn that my application wasn't sent forward recently. A total blow to my ego.

I applied to SSHRC and my application went through to Ottawa but I haven't heard the final decision yet. It will be very ironic if I get the scholarship though because I was rejected from the 2 schools I applied to so I won't be able to use it.

well I'm sure someone else might be able to use it. The irony with me is that I actually did get into a program, but I will not be receive external funding. I feel sort of silly really, but I know EXACTLY what was wrong with my application and I intend to avoid all the mistakes for next year's round of admissions.

SSHRC sucks (and now that I've said this they'll definitely keep rejecting me, haha)

I've applied two times, both times everyone who edited my application said it had everything SSHRC looks for, and I was rejected both times.

So I've given up on ever getting SSHRC and now I just apply because my school requires us to apply every year.

Official (and generic!) rejection email from Concordia today.

"Your application did not meet the following requirement(s):

As there are a limited number of spaces available in the program, and there were many fine applications, we are unable to accept all candidates."

Oh, Concordia. 🙂 Good luck to anyone still waiting for news!

It seems unfair that you are expected to make a decision before the 15th yet still receive an acceptance after the 15th.

I got the same one. Blah.

Anyone heard from Regina, either way, or been officially rejected from Guelph yet?

Ok. I phoned the secretary at Regina today and offers have been made. I'm officially on the waitlist which gives me a glimmer of hope. I've emailed the DCT to find out more info. Lakehead is STILL making decisions which is starting to upset me but apparently they should be done by the end of the week.

Guelph confuses me. Anyone received an official rejection from them yet? If so, was it by mail or email?

Out of curiosity, who did you apply to work with at Guelph? One of the main reasons I didn't apply there was because I did my undergrad there and wasn't intrigued enough by any of the faculty's research to apply for grad studies, but it is an excellent school and group of faculty.

I applied to work with Dr. Lumley and/or Bailey. I heard it was a great school and would love to go there. Hopefully I'll be able to get ahold of someone tomorrow to find out what's going on.

I have so much love for Dr. Bailey <3 She went on mat leave for most of my undergrad but I still managed to take my first Developmental course with her, which totally got me interested in the field, and is a big reason I'm where I am right now 🙂

Has anyone heard from UVic?

I know that they've made offers already. Last year my rejection letter was mailed on April 1st and I received it on the 7th...so I was wondering if anyone else has received a rejection from them yet?

Things are going so crappily right now...I need a Canadian miracle!

U Vic and McGill are the two remaining schools I haven't heard from! So you're not alone Duckygirl. Fingers crossed for a Canadian miracle for you <3

I know what you mean, but for instance, I was waitlisted at Queens and in their waitlist message they told me that I was first on the wait list to work with a particular professor, but that if I happened to get another offer before I hear back from them, that I should probably take it.

Perhaps this is the general stance regarding this?

I am also mondo upset with SSHRC. I got into several programs and people have told me that my application was great...but apparently I was sent as an alternate by my psychology department, and then the university commitee had to cut more applications, and mine was one of them on the chopping block. Oh wells! There is still OGS right?

Also, for the person whose SSHRC application was sent but hasn't heard back from programs yet, I knew someone who was awarded a SSHRC and didn't get in the first time she applied, she got in the following year and it looks really nice on your application in the future. For the rest of your life you will get to put it on your C.V! So you should feel really proud if you do end up with one!

Hey guys.

I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about Lakehead University. Anything about it would be great to hear. About the psyc program, the university itself, Thunder Bay and what's there...

The only things I know are that the program gained CPA accreditation last year, they offer $7500 graduate assistanceship (don't know yet if this is for the semester or year???) and that Thunder Bay is really small and in the middle of nowhere.

If anyone has any information I would really really appreciate it. I'm trying to ease my nervousness about accepting an offer there if 2 other universities don't come through.

If you don't feel comfortable posting here, feel free to PM me.

Thanks a million!

Anyone have any idea why York is taking so long to reject anyone? *frustrated*.

Anyone have any idea why York is taking so long to reject anyone? *frustrated*.

Good question. I was told that some people's applications to the clinical stream were sometimes forwarded to the social stream if they were initially declined acceptance but showed strong credentials. That may account for some peoples delay.

I checked my application status at McGill yesterday and it was finally updated (rejected), if anyone was still waiting on hearing from them!

I wish I could pass along some information about York ;( Maybe try e-mailing your POIs? They're probably just waiting for acceptances/rejections before getting to waitlisted people...like most other schools right now 😛

Yeah, but has York rejected *anyone*? I doubt I'm waitlisted (though I did have a phone interview)... I'm pretty sure they're just not rejecting anyone yet, for no particular reason.

Someone posted a February 5th rejection from York in psychology on thegradcafe.com...

EDIT: Have you checked your status on MyFile?

Yeah, it still says "No Decision Yet". I may call, just in case I'm on the waitlist for some strange reason... I just figured no one had been rejected.

I got a rejection from York a couple weeks ago. You may want to call the grad secretary WesternSky.

🙂

I'm going crazy. Can anyone offer some feedback about OISE (the SCCP program)? I've seen the "earliest known interview/acceptance" post. But otherwise I haven't heard much in here. I also get the impression that the online status isn't reliably updated. I haven't heard anything from them yet...

Okay, update on York. Offers have gone out, rejections have gone out, and a subset of applications (mine included) are in application limbo-- the grad secretary said that they are reserving some applications in case a large number of offers are not accepted and they need to go back to the drawing board. She also said that this was not likely, and I should think about accepting other offers. The final round of rejections should arrive by April 30th.

Thanks, Mark!

I did recently receive an offer to a Psy D. program that I'd rather not attend. It is currently my only pending offer. I have not yet accepted or declined. I have still not heard from 2 schools in the Pacific Northwest, one in Canada, and one in the Midwest. Is this good news? Not likely. But it is the witching hour, is it not? Good luck everyone!

So its April 15 and I still haven't heard back from 4 schools! They sure know how to take your money but are completely incompetent in following up on your application.

Any volunteers to call Paul Taylor at UVic and ask him if the class is set and those who've not heard are rejected?

This is crazy!

I accepted my offer at University of Manitoba. Anyone else going there too?

So where has everyone decided to go next year? I'm trying to live vicariously through you all, haha!

I have to wait till Friday afternoon to hear about my last chance. It's so hard to sit here and wonder whether or not I should be incredibly excited about the call or dreading it.

Please please please be good news!!!
