Not nearly as bad as my Hopkins interview..

Near the end of the interview:

Interviewer: "Well....with this application you will probably get in somewhere"

I got that at Harvard!!!! So that means I already know what my decision will be next week huh

Though i must say he added that "it all will come down to where you wanna go" so if i wanna go to HMS am i in???? lol

Who knows, the way she said it definitely implied I was NOT getting into Hopkins and I ended up getting waitlisted, so it may not be a death sentence...but that interview day was enough for me to avoid Baltimore like the plague (I didn't apply to Hopkins 4 years later either for residency). I don't think I could have been more turned off by a group of medical students and attendings.

I would totally say the opposite.
But then again its personal

Interview days will always be skewed by the people you meet. When you interact with 4 attendings out of a hospital of thousands of them, and 20 med students out of 800, you are not always going to get the same impressions as your peers.

That said, it was still the only impression I got on the school.

..or when they say "we were unable to offer you a spot in the class" when you didn't even interview!!!

How has this ENTIRE THREAD happened without this yet?:

Haha seems like Colummbia's admissions office has some issues. I thought their application website was pretty bad, and didn't they make us mail in a photo rather than upload online? For shame.

Their admissions office is very disorganized but so are the offices at downstate, sinai, and einstein. Nyu's office isn't great either. I think it's a new york thing.

If you guys are seriously offended by some BS notion of presumption on the part of an admissions committee, you're gonna be in for a rude awakening once you start med school. "Professional" school does NOT equal being robotic in every function. There's not much that is professional about medical school. You'll see that when you're in 3rd year and you get chewed out by an attending or resident who is having a bad day. Are you going to go cry over that too? It's a throwaway line in a letter. Man (or woman) up and learn to separate the stuff from the actual stuff.

Mehhh I did organized sports. I highly doubt anything a future attending can say will make me want to cry more than some of what my coaches have yelled to me over the years. I also doubt the OP cried over the rejection. I got mad over the wording of some of my rejection letters too because they were rude. It doesn't mean I need to man up...It just means I value manners and good quality professional writing 🙂

I don't think anyone is "seriously offended." It's pretty evident that everyone has been joking around/laughing about it. That being said, just because something is one way doesn't mean it shouldn't change.

Thank you for the bitter/jaded I've made it further/had it worse than you perspective though. It really is such a refreshing viewpoint... 🙄

I'm sorry, where did I say I had it worse? And it's not evident that everyone is joking around. The OP and others are calling a rejection letter rude for some dumb reason. Sorry, let me soften that for you. I regret to inform you that your rationale is less than well thought out.

Outside of SDN (and your parents), people could not care less about your disappointment about the word disappointment. 🙄

Well I for one was joking around. It is an internet forum and it is fun to vent/commiserate/make fun of Baltimore...

My comment was directed at your general attitude not a specific statement. And the letter actually is rude, but no one has posted anything acting like they were genuinely upset/devastated by it. Some people do care about being polite and not everyone uses the existence of *******s to justify their own rudeness.

I didn't believe this until I checked but it's true... Well, there's always Cornell. Somebody is either a huge a-hole or they missed changing a document title.

woah! I checked mine, but mine said "P&S Decision Letter" sent today at noon. they must've realized their (REALLY STUPID) mistake later on? oh man.

I'm probably going to cry everyday on rotations, as I get upset when my ego isn't constantly stroked.

Geez, get over yourself. News flash: This is a form letter. They did not draft a special one for you and presume your disappointment.

And the word you meant to use is "presumptuous," not "pretentious." But it is pretentious of you to start a thread the sole purpose of which is to tell us you were not disappointed by your rejection by Columbia.

Agreed. Getting rejected is part of the process. The OP is taking it personally and he or she should not. Sure, your mom told you that you were the greatest thing since the invention of Twinkies, but, alas, you are not, there are so many people just as bright or smarter than you, and med schools have the pick of the litter. So if you did not get picked, pull the covers over your head, cry a river of tears, and then get up in the morning and move on with your life. Jeez.

The document itself was titled "Well Cornell". Look at the properties of the pdf and you'll see it, written by Kim Davis who may be on faculty at Cornell. If you open it up in googledocs or something, it will also be in the title bar or whatever. "P & S whatever" was the file name but "well cornell" is definitely there.

When you were in first grade, did you play on a soccer team where nobody kept score, so no kid would be a loser, and everyone got a trophy at the pizza party. Guess what, in the competition to get admitted to Columbia, you are a loser. Columbia did not think that you measured up to the competition. It happens.

As soon as I opened this thread I thought of you and your Hopkins WL letter. How are you coping, man? Is every day a struggle?

I rarely laugh on these forums, but man this one got me! I literally Laughed Out Loud ! Thanks for that lol

Did you really expect anything different from an Ivy League school?

I can't wait for Harvard's rejection letter... Any bets on the language?
Oh, they don't send out rejection letters. You just get a steaming pile of **** in the mail.

f bombs raining down on you from left to right. coming down at you. come in sideways. even coming from up underneath

You forget that they have scientists working for them.

The letters will have atleast one of the following:
-Strategically placed lemon/lime juice such that when you open them, it will squirt into your eyes to make you cry.
-The stuff in onions that makes you cry.

The letter will be a piece of tissue paper to wipe your eyes with.

That will be the entire rejection letter.

Wait!

Does this mean that those rejected from columbia won't get a trophy and a pizza party?

WTF? After spending all that money to apply, they don't even throw you a bloody pizza party!!!

and invisible ink that says "f you" when viewed under a UV lamp. LOL LOL

now ride that cliche! YEEHAWW

You guys complaining in this thread are overly sensitive. Yeah you got rejected. omg they worded it not exactly the way I wanted. Get over it.

seriously. OPs POed (heehee) that a medical school had the audacity to offer empathy over the rejection he already knew was coming. He's had his tantrum and I hope now feels better.

My experience with Columbia was that they had the classiest admissions correspondence of any school i applied to (No, I didn't get in, either)

Seriously though, the intention wasn't to be snarky. I'm sure who ever wrote it was operating under the assumption that everyone would ideally like to be accepted at every place they applied, regardless of if a given school was their first choice.

Yeah I basically agree with this perspective.

It was probably just some pretty much random person who had to make a form letter and didn't really know professional writing, not that anyone was being pretentious. Neither was it anything worth calling them out on unless you actually are upset over the rejection.

This is a thread about a medical school rejection letter.

Medical school rejection letters are not important.

A properly timed and poorly worded medical school rejection letter can be humorous.

Now guys, I've had a hard day and need some rest--I got rejected from Columbia today! Have some sympathy!

Right, not worth calling them out on. That's why I didn't. Just shared it with all you fellow applicants.

Here's hoping for Harvard, Yale, and Ponce rejections tomorrow!

OP,

I will definitely keep sympathizing with you.

And Cole I do hope you are able to cope with the trauma of being waitlisted at Johns Hopkins.

Well OP I for one was amused by your thread. I even told my dad about the Cornell thing and he had a good laugh too. If your harvard yale or Ponce rejections are as funny please share... It is a good stress reliever. Also for the record sorry about your rejection even if you didn't really care.

Great thread. Thanks for that.
And I don't think it's about being "overly sensitive". You have to admit that the aforementioned rejection letters are pretty presumptuous. Hopkins tops all though...

Don't hang yourself cole.

OP I got the letter today and thought the wording was obnoxious too. Especially since I withdrew my application from Columbia months ago and they hope I'm not too disappointed that they don't want me now...

Something something down the road not across the street something?

😛

And yeah LOL at Cornell file title
