I never understood why people on this forum thought I was white. And even if others did, I would think at least the desi's would know better.

Monu: No, doesn't happen often. Then again, I only know a few Indian kids at my school so I probably would'nt know who they were talking about.

Monu,

I know all about what you are talking about. People used to ask me in middle school and highschool if I was related to someone with the same last name as me, because my last name is Shah and that is a common guju last name.

Anyhow, even now, people ask me if I'm related to another Shah they know of. Sometimes, if they know of a patel, they ask if I know that person just because they are indian. Its soooo flipping annoying. Its like me asking every White guy if he knows the next white guy. Its so tiresome.

I didn't think you were white. But I do think you remind me of some of these Indian actors in looks. Actually, I knew were indian because of the Premed Asian Indian forum, on which I think I met you. It was back when we were having a discussion about India fest at the USF sundome.

umm, I know this will sound insanely ignorant, but I am curious... is there / what is the difference between desi and guju??

on a slightly different note... only 18 days left (roughly, no actual real/official announcement here so do not get too excited) until we get the scores back!!!

No that's not an ignorant question.

Des, literally means COUNTRY. So the term desi, is used by all indians, as well as pakistani and bengali people from the Bangladesh part of the Bengali area, to refer to those from that region.

In India, there are 20 states. Guju is a nickname to refer to anyone whom is from gujarat (one of the 20 states. This particular state is in the west central part). Similarly there are Punjabi people from the north, Konkani people from the south west (from Goa), and Malyalee people from the south west. There are tamil and telugu people from the south central and souteast part of india respectively, and so forth. There are many other states in india too, but I've just listed some of the major states that have people representing in the states.

Oh and to confuse matters more, there are 18 national languages. Almost one for each state that exists plus the national language Hindi.

Hope that clears it up.

Check my message to you in the other forum about schools to apply to. I didn't post here since I already posted in the other forum before I saw the post here. Your GPA is solid from a good school, and your MCAT is most likely going to be equally high. If you do end up with 34 or higher, you should consider Yale and Mayo as two other top tier schools.

As for safety schools, I'll reiterate what I had said earlier:

SLU, Albany, Rosalind Franklin, NYMC, and Drexel are the big five. Also, GWU is a good school to apply to if you are considering DC as well.

Also Ohio State Universtiy is a good school to apply to, I know of some people whom got in there this year as well as a couple years ago. They have decent stats and are a top 50 school too. Anyhow, that's all for now.

ahhh... ya I have some Punjabi friends, as well as some Sihk (spelling?) friends.

anyway, thanks for the explanation 😀

and to wetlightning - ya your stats are superb, don't worry!! 🙂

I'll stop before this turns into another desi thread. Seriously, if someone starts talking about samosas I'll never come back here again.

Yah I agree about Ajay Devgan. Hritik too. I liked him in Fiza, but after that I didn't care too much for him.

What do you think about Vivek Obreri?? Sorry if the last name is spelled wrong. But you know what I mean. By the way whom is Dino Morea?????

I look nothing like Hrithik and why Tobey Maguire? He has one expression--perplexed. I have at least two....three even.

Is Dino his real name.....wasnt Dino the pet in the Flinstones?

On behalf of Indians everywhere I want to apologize to the OP for what we've done to your thread.

dino's dad is italian, i believe...hence the name

maybe the tobey similarity comes from that one pic in your avatar

you're right, we do manage to commandeer threads and discuss food and bollywood...but there aren't many people on the mcat discussion thread anymore..they've all moved to pre-allo! the few of us left seem to be predominantly desi

ok, i'm gonna redirect this thread b/c there are more important things like talking about indian celebrities... such as helping indian pre-meds.

so i have about a 3.2 gpa (sci and cumulative are both about the same). but my first three semesters were all C's. and then i started getting A's. however, a good bit of my A's come from research credits and independent science project. i'm hoping for an mcat score around 29-31 (fingers crossed) and i'm going to do my smp at UMMDNJ. If i keep my current trend and do well in my smp (above a 3.5), do you think I'll be relatively ok? is there anything else I should do to improve my resume?

What kind of extracurriculars have you done??? How much clinical and/or research experience do you have??? It depends on a lot of other things as well. ASDIC told me that 80% of the UMDNJ SMP people get into NJMS the next year. So if you do well, you definitely have a chance. However, I can't really say much more without having a full perspective of the rest of your application.

I personally know like 4 people who were in the SMP program at NJMS and who got in with me. other people got into other medical schools. The acceptance rate is about 80%+ for NJMS SMP applicants.

one of the people who got in with me had a 3.3 GPA and 3.8 SMP GPA with a 29 MCAT with good research, clinical and EC activities and was Asian.

your gpa is good, strive for a GPA of 3.6+ in the SMP and a decent mcat score. pick up some good ECs, research and clinical stuff.

Check outL
http://www.premedonline.com/Application/msprograms.html

One good thing about the SMP program is that if you honor any of the medical classes such as physiology or biochem or genetics, you will be exempt from them as a medical student at NJMS.

It was funny that they sent me the SMP application ( I had requested it before since i wasnt confident of my mcat scores) after I got into the main MD program.

Good Luck

😉

quick question regarding SMP: do you apply the same year that you are in it or after you finish it?

Not really sure, but someone on the postbac forum may be able to help you with this one.

it depends...some SMP programs are 1 year others 2 years...depending on the program and if ur doing a research based SMP.

Usually the med schools want to see atleast 2 semesters of SMP work. Assuming you started ur 1st semester in the fall and 2nd semester in the following spring, after u finish these 2 semesters, u can apply during the following summer and hopefully get an acceptance before ur third semester has ended.

I'll phrase this is reference to me so hopefully the answer won't be confusing. I just graduated college, I applied in February of my senior year. I will be in the SMP in sept of 05 and will start filling out my amscas (if MCAT scores come in well) in the late spring/early summmer of 06. I hope to actually start med school in fall of 06. Sorry for the akward wording, but I thought alot of "next years" and "the year before or after" would make it sound confusing.

Guju, in response to your exctracurriculars... I was a varsity athlete in college my first 3 years (main reason for initial struggles in college), I was also associate news editor of my college newspaper my first 2 years. I also volunteered at the university hospital during my sophomore year. I started doing research my junior year, stayed an extra year to do a thesis. I know my volunteer experience sounds limited, but I volunteered ALOT in high school and I found that I was really into research so I quit everything to focus on that.

Do you think I should volunteer more just for the sake of putting it on my application? I went to a magnet high school and was heavily involved in volunteering at hospitals and an AIDS center and I didnt think I had much more insight to gain as a volunteer. Can you recommend any other activites that would be similar to volunteering but not as passive (ie, just sitting there watching people)?

I know this was alot and I totally redirected this thread, so my appologies to all.

- If you apply the summer of '06, you are applying to enter med school starting in fall '07.

- I do not think high school activities will carry any strong significance in their consideration of your application. What high school you went to, and what you did there, will certainly not matter very much, unless it extends into your college years as well. Mostly, they will be very interested in the undergrad years, and for non-trads, what happened after that and the recent coursework you take...

Have you thought about doing a summer medical mission trip??? Maybe do that and volunteer for a semester or so at a hospital near you. That would be my recommendation. Maybe working with something like hospice or something of that nature will also give you a good patient interaction type of opportunities.

wow, time really did fly since i took the mcat.

...actually if scores come out around June 14-16, its more like 2 1/2 weeks. I just hate getting excited about a specific date and then finding out its still a few days away. My dos pesos...or rupees, if you're so inclined.

Anyway, what are you guys gonna do once you find out? Travel, get drunk, call up ex gf's and gloat, burn your MCAT books....

....I guess the one thing we'll all be doing is posting on SDN! I just hope the lame SDN servers don't crash like they're so prone to.

definately post on sdn, then back to studying for finals..

btw, those three asterisks in ur title have always bugged me because i cant figure out what they stand for, tell me!

Its just SDN...apparently you're not allowed to use 'SDN' anywhere in your title to prevent illegitimate SDN monitors.

You're still not done with finals? Are you on a quarter system or something? How does that work? Do you just go one from quarter directly to the next? No summer breaks?

I always wanted to go to a school with a quarter system because I learn a lot better when I only have 3 classes to concentrate on. But then I learned that you actually take 5 classes but they stretch it out over three quarters. That sucks. But I guess the advantage is that if you tank one section, you still have two others to make up for it, so it only affects 1/3 of your gpa for that class instead of 1/2

jtank said:

Yah I know what you mean. Last time, I took it....time went by so slowly. This time, however, time has flown soooooooo fast.

Also, I'm curious about the same thing as Junebug is curious about. When does your school end?? We ended in the first week of May and had summer classes start 2 weeks later.

the quarter system is comprised of 10 weeks, plus finals week. winter break comes between fall and winter quarters and spring break comes between winter and spring quarters. summer break is from june 17-sep 29. we have two summer sessions available in the summer, 6 weeks each.

the good part about quarter system is that more chances to get good grades, and the classes are split into three quarters, instead of two. so for example, physics, first quarter was kinematics/mechanis, second electricity+magnetism/fluid, third was electromagnetism/optics. the bad part is that midterms come up so fast since the entire quarter is only 10 weeks long. all the UCs are on quarter system, except UC berkeley, its on semester, and graduation was last week for them (i went to my cousins there).

hope that helps.

Oh ok. That makes much more sense. Thanks for the clarification. Good luck. At least you'll be busy til MCAT scores come out, so you won't fret and worry because of too much time on your hands.
