I'm getting inked in a week - it'll be non-offensive and visible when wearing a short sleeved shirt. Not yet in medical school. What experiences have those with tattoos had during admissions, medical school and beyond?

(Not really looking for opinions and responses from those without tats unless they were in a situation where they had to choose between Mr. Tattooed and Mr. No Tattoos, and they chose Mr. No Tattoos because they had a thing against tats).

As long as it can be covered by your suit, and it sounds like yours will be, it won't make a difference at all; just don't pull up your sleeve during your interview to show it off! I had no issues during applications, but i never took my pants/skirt off to show it.

That would make for a very awkward interview.. 🙄

As long as it isn't visible in a suit and tie, it will be a non-issue at your interview because the interviewer simply won't know. I have several tattoos as do many of my friends from medical school. Some of the girls in my class had ankle tattoos which I assume were visible when they wore skirts, so I don't think it is that big of a deal as long as it is discrete and tasteful. That said, you may end up with someone who absolutely thinks they are the worst thing ever and will form a negative reaction to you, which is why it is best to keep them hidden during your interview.

awkward....or a stand out candidate?

I think your EC's alone make you stand out above 99% of people applying to medical school.

Question: have you won a noble peace prize yet?

haha thanks, and no not yet, but i think when i'm 25, that'll be my year.

I love how the "difinitive" tats thread ends in a question mark.

Haha, I misread the title of the thread. I think it would have been better the way I read it...

So OP, don't leave us in the dark, what are you thinking of getting????

So, I was thinking of getting the following tattoo's (see image below)

I know they're visable when I'm wearing a suit, but I really think they're distinctive. What message do you guys think it will send the Adcom during an interview?

(A) I am proud of my slavic heritage

(B) Caution, I am a sociopathic knife assassin.

Uhh, B. Hold off. No offense, but I don't think the "sociopathic knife assassin" vibe will inspire confidence in you from teachers or future patients.

I've wanted to get a tattoo for like the last 2 years but I keep chickening out. Its so... permanent. But I'm still considering getting one before the summer is out.

if you enjoy swimming, i'd wait till summer is out. you can't go swimming for like, two weeks after you get it. and you're not supposed to expose it to a lot of light either. It is quite permanent. haha a lot of times i forget i have one, and then i'll walk past a mirror as i'm going into the shower and i'll be like "what the hell is that? ohhhhh yeah"

Yeah, same here. I can never decide what kind of tattoo I'd get or where I'd get it... I figure that my indecision is a good reason not to do something so permanent.

 Thanks for the info, I'll take it into consideration.

Yea, I can't decide where to put the tattoo either. My friend has this amazing tattoo of this symbolic dragon that starts on her shoulder and goes to her mid-back. I love it. Another friend has like 10 tattoos, the biggest of which is this floral-ish design that takes up the majority of her back. So pretty!

I think I love tattoos... just not ON me. 🙄

My girlfriend had this great idea: when trying to figure out where to place her tattoo she just spent some time thinking about where a tattoo might look good on her mom's body. The ending? She now has a beautiful tattoo around her ankle that will age as gracefully as she will.

The thinking is great, i mean, I think if more women thought about how tattoo's looked on the body of a 45 year old version on themselves, there would be a lot 35 y/o soccar moms paying to have their tramp stamps removed.

Here's another idea if you're worried about professionalism, you could buy a white coat, and just tattoo every darn speck of skin that's covered by the white coat, a la the tattooed doctor.

Tattoos on the hands, neck, or face (i.e., anywhere a suit can't hide them) are referred to as "everlasting jobstoppers," for reasons that I think are self-explanatory.

In order to pull off hand tats like these, you need to be roughly as bad@$$ as Viggo was in this movie. Otherwise, just put the same image somewhere else.

Are you thinking of getting these distinct ones on your hand? This isn't being proud of your heritage, this is pimping out your culture to look cool. THese tattoos imply a lot in Russia and regular citizens do NOT get these tattoos. There are much better ways to be proud of your heritage than to celebrate the most shameful aspect of that culture which has been glorified in the media and by 18 year old kids.

wait, so, you're saying knife assassin isn't appropriate!? and face tattoo's are a bad idea???

then i probably shouldn't ask you guys about this image (see below) I got tattooed on neck last month....
