I don't know if this is something any of you might be interested in, especially if you are leaning towards emergency medicine. I have started a program at here entitled "Get PHED Up!!-Preventive Healthcare in the Emergency Department" through a grant from the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship. Basically it allows medical students to spend time in the ED and counsel patients, provide them with preventive health info and give them phone numbers for local health agencies. It has been very successful with both patients and students, who have a great opportunity to speak with patients and get a good luck at EM at the same time. There is a website
www.ecu.edu/org/getphedup
which fully details the program and how you can start it at your school. It would require 1-2 people to get it running. Please contact me if you have any questions.
