The Florida Thread

There was a video, hosted by Dean Thompson, on the UF VetMed website that went over the admissions process and point breakdown. I can't seem to find it now, so maybe someone a little more computer/google search savvy could. It was really informational, and gave a good idea about what criteria (outlined by bakaduin) the adcoms are going on.

I got an interview!! I was rejected last year so im happy!!! 😀 Mine is scheduled for march 22

My interview packet arrived today as well, yay!!!!!

I did the file review last year. Their reason they didn't accept me was that my interview sucked. Since I had the death of a family member 36 hours before and it was a slow passing process, I hand't slept in a week. I wasn't going to dare mention that in my interview....it would look like I was wanting brownie points or making excuses.

I know it's a numbers game and this year the apps were probably stronger. It still stinks. How can I have a better interview if I don't get one?? Taking more classes won't increase my GPA since I already have a gazillion credit hours with my Master's + Bach's degrees.

Maybe I'll apply one more year, and then I'm done. I'll be 34 next month and I can't imagine applying 6 times before I get in. I'm not persoanlly ticked off at UF, but just frustrated at the whole process. There are so many good applicants and so few seats!!! Plus working 3 jobs for another year is not appeasing.

Congrats to those of you who got interviews and good luck!!

I am right there with you......I interviewed at UF last year (IS) and just received my rejection letter.....in my review they said I need a better interview...its pretty hard to do that without getting a chance......

For those of you who received interviews:
1. Congrats!
2. What is the date they ask for your decision to accept/decline the interview? Also, it seems these dates may be different depending on your interview date, so please also include IS or OOS, and March 8th or 22nd, please 🙂

I'm on the alternate list for an interview, so I'm just wondering when they might start drawing from the list. Thanks to all!

Rejection letter today! :0(

Interview dates and residency info are available in the larger "interviews!" thread. 🙂

Rejection letter today. 🙁

I am holding out hope for my other school I applied to, my instate (Penn).

Congrats to everyone who got an interview, especially those who are out of state!! 👍

Sorry fadingstars !!! 🙁 Are you waiting on any more schools???

anxwaiting, so sorry to hear bad news. Here's hoping for Penn!!

I didn't see that information in the interview thread. I want to know, specifically for Florida, what day interviewees are asked to accept/decline their interview by. Am I missing where that has been discussed?

Sorry, I misunderstood your question. I'm out-of-state, but my letter simply says "as soon as possible" in regards to declining an interview. And it actually doesn't even mention accepting the interview, but I did that via email today anyway.

That's really strange... and it makes me more anxious! :scared: If I end up getting an interview, I hope they notify me in a decent amount of time (not the day before!).

Nole, last year I was alternate for interview and I found out on a Monday that I had an interview that Saturday! Doubt they'd cut it much more closer than that. Good luck!

Have any of the interview alternates heard anything?

Have any of the interview alternates heard anything?

Nope. Although, I called UF this past week and they told me that they will call alternates the day before if they have to!

Are there any current Florida vet students lurking around that could answer some questions via PM for me? Why does Florida seem so grossly underrepresented on these boards? I have so many burning questions before I head down for my interview! lol 🙂

Im not a Florida Vet student but I am an undergrad so if you have any general questions about the school I may be able to answer them. Also I talk to a few current vet students and probably could get the rest of your questions answered as well.

One of their students is supposed to get in touch with us to answer any questions, but I haven't heard anything.

I went through their interview process last year, and my cousin is a second year there. maybe we can help.

Well, a few quick questions to start -- what's the cultural life like in Gainesville? Also, an hour long closed-file interview sounds like torture, is that accurate? Haha. How much would a 1BR apartment run in the area?

I'm also wondering about some specifics relating to the vet school itself.. how many active clubs are there and what is the level of participation? Is there a pathology club (my interest)? How diverse is the student body?

Thanks in advance 😀

I can tell you Gainesville is a pretty good town for whatever type of person you are. The campus is rather large, and pretty much in an large rectangle with the Vet school just off the main campus. In light of this directly around the campus is a typical college town, there are plenty of bars/clubs both downtown and right off campus if thats what your into. If not though there are plenty of quiet family neighborhoods and within the city their is everything you could possibly need, an airport, movies, tons of restaurants, etc. etc.

I have heard the interview is pretty bland compared to the open file interviews. You sit with 3 interviewers (a faculty member, an alumnus, and a 4th year student) and basically get asked questions off a specific sheet. Each person interviewed gets asked the same questions and they just rattle them off one by one.

Apartments depend on where you live. I live in the student ghetto where all the apartments are much older but a block off campus so because of location I pay 629/month for rent only. If you dont mind living a bit off campus and driving to class, which shouldnt be a problem as the vet school isnt on the main campus where parking is tight, you could easily find a nice new 1 bedroom between 500-600/month with utilities INCLUDED. There are so many apartments in Gainesville you can surely find one thats in your price range and meets whatever criteria you have.

Have any of the interview alternates heard anything?

I just got a message on my phone today while I was in class inviting me to accept an interview position that had just opened (which I am going to accept), on March 22! So they have started going to the alternate pool! Good luck!

Ditto! 😀

Correct - 3 interviewers consisting of a faculty member, a practicing veterinarian and a senior student. They take turns asking questions and it is primarily behavioral based. I recall the first questions was "tell us about your degree" or some such.

I got my lucky phone call today!! Good luck to all those still waiting 🙂

For all those waiting for an interview, I declined my interview today so hopeully it frees up a spot for someone else (Im OOS)

So I got invited for interview on March 8th (tomorrow) by snail mail back on 2/15. The stress is KILLING me! I am so nervous right now I don't know what to do. I am pretty comfortable with all the potential questions, but I am afraid I am going to choke when I get in the room.

Tomorrows the big day! Definitely have a few nerves kicking in!

Rejected. Well that's it, all three schools rejected me. Six months of waiting, stressing, scraping up money to get this done - all ends in the toilet.

Hello Meadow,

Why not enroll in Penn Foster for your associates degree in Vet Tech? They will accept you, thats what I plan on doing this summer.

They mail you all the books you study online and from home, they are AVMA accredited the only catch is that you have to get your own hands on through a Vet Hospital so you would have to find a proctor.

Or are you already a Tech? And are only seeking your BA?

meadow36 was applying to vet school to work towards a DVM.

What'd everyone think of the interview? I didn't think it was bad at all.
The last question, ranking statements 1-10, was a little odd.

I didn't think the interviews were that bad either. It made me feel a lot better after talking with the people interviewing with me and the freshmen vet students. I had prepared for most of the questions by looking online. All in all, it was a pretty enjoyable experience. Now I just have to wait (which is the hard part).

Hope everyone's interviews went well on Saturday!! 😀 😀

Did they ask essentially the same questions as last year?

So after all the insanity that I've had involving UF, they called me yesterday to give me an interview on the 22 at 4:30. My head is still spinning.

Boo on insanity and yay for interviews! 😀 I don't know what your circumstances are, but I've heard numerous people complain about their admissions department.

Who has an interview for the 22? Perhaps we can get together after the interview and celebrate making it this far withing going totally nuts.

I do!! My interview is on the 22nd (that is so fun to say!). PM me if you want to get together 🙂

anyone have any airport suggestions? tickets to gainesville are around $500, so I was wondering if anyone knew better alternatives?

thanks

Fly into Jax or Orlando! There is a private shuttle service that will take you to and from the airports to g'ville.

I too now have an interview but was scared to say anything. I was thinking they've made a mistake....what if they hadn't called all of their alternates yet..... :scared: then they could revoke....didn't need anymore stress!!

This interview was after my rejection letter. Now there are 3 people I 'know' of who this has happened to, including myself. This emotional rollercoaster is a rough one. But an itnerview is just that and I plan to make the most of it this year. :luck: to everyone interviewing on the 22nd. I was looking at the interview feedback section and saw all feedback was left in 2007. Would those who interviewed 2 weeks ago post?? I know we're competing with you, but it would be a nice gesture 😳

The format is the same as it was last year.

Good luck.

Hey,
I'll be there on the 22nd.
:luck::luck::luck:
Congrats philomycus! You're in the pile!

What??? Did I read this right?? You got an interview AFTER your rejection letter? Did your rejection letter state that this might be a possibility?

How does that happen? I guess a lot of people turned down interviews?

Well good luck Philo!!! What an exciting turn of events!!!! 😀

Yes, you read it correctly. The letter didn't state it was a possibility. It was crystal clear that I was rejected.
