Has anyone read this?

It really is a fantastic read, quite moving.

I wonder how much of residency is really like how it describe in the book.

What did y'all think of it?

I read it, although it was a long time ago. Actually, I think I did a book report on it in middle school. Skipped over a few "inappropriate" scenes though. Definately a great glimpse into the mind's eye of a resident. I was planning on re-reading it over the break. 😀

I think that there's a lot less sex in real residencies. 😉

The moral of residency is presented there loud and clear...
THEY CAN ALWAYS HURT YOU MORE.....

Have the book, love the Fat Man. I actually saw the movie on cable not too long ago, it was crap.

i read it preresidency and again when i finished residency. there's some definite truths in that book, but it was written at a different time in medicine.

the rules are real though....gomers do go to ground. age+bun = lasix dose, 16 gauge-needle and strong arm.... can always hurt you more...

other concepts in the book are pretty real too....buffing, turfing...

i definitely didn't have the relationships with nursing and with social work that they did....

and the movie was pretty crappy.

Awesome book...a must read for anyone going into medicine.

i really liked it. it's a really fun book. the kind that keeps you from doing homework for days (... ok, i swear i'm going to put it down and go do my homework in 5 more pages...).

i have heard mixed things about how true to life it is these days, but i think it was pretty accurate at the time it was written. it scared me a little... i think i will go into a less-depressing specialty than IM.

i can only hope i have people as loving and supportive as the fat man and berry when i am a resident.

Actually, the book was originally meant to be a satire on Harvard medical School and their hospital. However over the years it has been immortalized as "the" book on residency. However, I agree that it was written in a different time. Medicine and residency is different now. However it's difficult to get through a day at the hospital without hearing the wear "turf" "lol" (little old lady) or "don't nothing can be the most helpful". Definitely a classic novel!

I also have Mount Misery, haven't had time to finish it yet, but it covers his psychiatry residency. So far not as good as HOG, but we'll see.

I loved The House of God in fact one of my favorite books. Mount Misery is good also but not as great as the classic. Has anybody read Guns, Germs and Steel. It's an excellent read also and was written by a physiology professor at UCLA SOM.
