This is the most accurate thing that will be written on all of SDNdom today. You win the internets, WANR.

Haha, thanks. I think I'll use my ownership of the internets to purchase an AOL email account, enter "the lounge" as an AOL keyword, and ask the forum questions about how to use Altavista and windows95.

I call bull on this. Pre-allo is hardly an interesting topic in the lounge. You're going by what other people are saying.

Like JDH said, the lounge is a good place for discussion but there is a culture there and people will tell it like it is. And don't play innocent like pre-allo isn't like that too. Pre-allo has it's own regulars that will jump at the chance to make sarcastic comments to any noob that doesn't know the classic pre-allo rules of "searching, lurking and being PC." I saw it 5 years ago and the new regulars are exactly the same. It's a never ending cycle.

By the way, most loungers are quite welcoming and chill. They only ask that one takes the time to get used to the culture there and play nicely.

So, your argument is that The Lounge is welcoming and chill...except when it's not. PA is the same way. The difference is that The Lounge is (purposefully) essentially unmoderated and that the "regulars" have been around a lot longer and demand more respect. I don't get exactly what you're arguing here. You think The Lounge is awesome. I say sometimes it's not. I think you agree with that. PA is the same. The "feel" of those two forums is vastly, identifiably different though. The two populations honestly don't mix well.

A forum can be welcoming but call out those that push the limit and troll. You're right, my argument is valid in that pre-allo is exactly the same way. It's like we're agree but are still not on the same page.

Whatever, I'm not here to change anyone's minds. My theory is that most loungers are residents, professionals, or medical students. The handful that are pre-med are non traditional. Please believe me when I say I'm not trying to be condescending at all but you pre-meds will learn to grow a thicker skin one day. If you're still around after the clinical years, revisit the lounge and see how you like it. It might be an age difference or it might be a culture difference but I don't expect people who click in pre-allo to automatically click in the lounge.

My whole point, by the way, was that this thread is ridiculous because the regulars in pre-allo are bashing on the lounge when the real world bashes on pre-allo all the time. It's funny in a way. And like I said, loungers hardly, if ever bring up the topic of pre-allo because it's just not that interesting to them. They will, however, make sarcastic remarks at a pre-allo-er who comes in and posts stupid sh-t. But isn't that the typical pre-allo response anyway.

I can tell you that there is a poster on this thread who loves to shoot down noobs in pre-allo yet visited the lounge a few times, posted weird comments, got shot down, and is now bashing the lounge because he didn't fit in. Ironic.

this thread is so ridiculous. Hello people!!! You are regular posters on pre-allo! Trust me, I've paid my dues with pre-allo, allo, clinical rotations and now certain physician forums. Real world people say the SAME about you. I've been in pre-allo long before most of you. I know the type of people that come through here and that post here regularly and so do you.

The medical and pre-medical world bashes pre-allo for being a bunch of anxious losers and now pre-allo is turning it on another forum. Everyone take a chill pill.

No, there is a difference. They want to bash on pre-allo down in the lounge, and they do, and no one gets their asscrack full of underwear. Say one cross word re: the flavor of The Lounge up here, and "they" start coming out of the woodwork. Why might that be?

Now now, gentlemen. We are comparing apples to oranges here.

The only thing that the two boards have in common is that each has its own culture, and violating the unwritten rules will result in some type of call-out.

Other than that, everything is different, or at least:
  1. what the unwritten rules are
  2. the process by which one becomes either a welcome or unwanted contributor
  3. how convoluted the culture is/how easy it is for a n00b to figure out
  4. the topics of the conversation
  5. the brand of humor
  6. the average level of education of the people posting
  7. the use of and response to sarcasm
  8. response to out-and-out insults
  9. mod activity in each forum
  10. level of anxiety and neurosis
  11. the degree to which conversations/threads are repeated ad nauseum

I am actually quite surprised that anyone from the lounge (aside from SDN9876/TS/469whatever the OP is) bothered to post in this thread. They couldn't care less about pre-allo or the lounge "reputation."

At least, not any more than pre-allo cares about what it's reputation is in the lounge. Basically, this thread is a joke, and as Sev put it, "The OP is on crack."

The Lounge is less neurotic (although not less weird) than pre-allo, so in that sense it is "laid back." It isn't more welcoming than pre-allo, though. Neither place is better or worse, and neither place has bigger jerks or nicer people, just different types of each.

I like the lounge for its weirdness. And I like pre-allo for its unintended hilarity. I don't feel that your average pre-allo contributor fits in well in the lounge, and your average lounger has almost no use for pre-allo.

There's really no need to cross the streams.

Let's just agree to kindof agree 🙂

I will note that The Lounge is discussed in PA approximately...almost never.

Don't do that all at once! (Once). Your land-line won't be able to handle it!

theres a nice hawt chicks thread in the lounge.
es aight.

Fair enough good sir.

Anyway, I like both forums. I have never seen the need for one to bash to other. I may have came of more enthusiastic about this subject that I really am. I mean no offense. Pre-allo serves a great deal of people and a good purpose. So does the lounge. Though I think sometimes people get the wrong idea about the lounge, go down and start spewing their crazy that they don't reveal in other forums.

I do as well; I just don't pop my head up to be treated like a whack-a-mole by the commentariat down there. I like to *read* in The Lounge. I like to *post* in PA.

We don't bash pre-allo. We do think it sucks when you guys dump your garbage in our forum. If you don't want it, what makes you think we do?

Yeah, it's like they think we can recycle that garbage 👎

None of us PA survivors are or were responsible for UpperEastSide. When you point at someone else, you have three fingers pointing right back at yourself 😉

And to seriously answer your question, you would have to agree that the community in The Lounge MUCH more swiftly and decisively deal with true trolls than how things work in PA. UES lived up here for a good long while doing his thing. One trip down to The Lounge and he's on blast.

That's true.

Everyone forgets that the Lounge used to be SDN practically. Let's give it some respect.

I meant lame threads, not users. It's a free country and anyone can come and post in the lounge. I don't blame PA for UES. He's an odd, strange young man.

Yes. The threads that used to get moved to All Students now get dropped like steaming turds into the lounge. They all eventually die, but it is a strange policy nonetheless.

I'm not sure why everyone thinks the lounge is so bad. It's not like you show up there for the first time and automatically get flamed. Be courteous, and you'll be fine. The only difference in attitude seems to be that if you post something stupid in pre-allo, you get a bunch of memes hinting to you that you're an idiot, whereas in the lounge someone will just tell you you're being an idiot.

I've had a similar experience down there. You just have to have some netiquette and dip your toes in the water slowly. Honestly, I haven't had any problems in the Lounge since I've posted there a bit. The regulars are fiesty but from my experience they're perfectly welcoming to people that don't act like toolbags.

The Lounge sucks. The regulars are weird trolls.

It's not like 4chan really. Most of the posts consist of unfunny things, lots of inside jokes, and trolling of new people they haven't accepted as "regulars." It's really pretty stupid.

I ain't even mad/sad. But it's no wonder that most of the "regulars" are people that have been there for years. No one wants to be a part of the Lounge community except for the people that elevate it to some kind of cool status.

There are some really extended responses to this very weird topic of which forum is better...

I guess the internet really is serious business, I never knew

Pretty much what I've been thinking this whole time.

I think there really is something to this. I am tradition premed, but I am very much a minority in the lounge.

With that said, while in general both forums may have limited overlap, I love them both. Pre-allo has been hugely helpful for me, though, I am not such a regular poster here as I am down yonder.

The cultures are different, but they are also working towards different goals, so it is not terribly surprising that this is the case.

True. Tool tolerance is much lower in the Lounge.

One does not simply walk into the Lounge. (inb4 nobody gets this)

Now this thread is going places.

I noticed that. It was super fun while it lasted, but I don't think I'll be going back, considering the abrupt bitch slap I received. That should make everyone a little bit happier.

Still haven't figured out the post requirement to see it....

The lounge is stupid... the people there form the "weird lounge club" and if you aren't in the club you might as well not post.

I think there is a time limit. You may have to be active for a few months... I don't exactly know the requirements. 😎
