Please post your scores!! I've noticed that there IS an EK scores thread, but not one officially done for EK Bio 1001..

I am doing one section of Biology, then the 30 minute review test, then 1001 corresponding section all in one day.. Takes me about eight hours per chapter (phew!)

So here it goes so far:

Lecture 1:
68/113 - 60% - 8
Lecture 2:
72/108 - 67% - 9
Lecture 3:
60/111 - 54% - 7
Lecture 4:
76/113 - 67% - 9
Lecture 5:
78/111 - 70% - 9
Lecture 6:
87/111 - 78% - 11
Lecture 7:
83/114 - 73% - 10

I feel like my scores are slightly improving because I am getting used to the tricky question structures and am learning to rely on passages more and more... But still, seeing 7-9 range isn't what I'm looking for

Here is a "score conversion chart" I've very roughly interpolated from the EK Bio 30-minute In-Class Exams:

%: Score
100 - 15
95-100 - 14
89-95 - 13
83-89 - 12
77-83 - 11
71-77 - 10
65-71 - 9
58-65 - 8
53-58 - 7
47-53 - 6
42-47 - 5
34-42 - 4

Hope we can get this thread going somewhere:cool:

komikos,

*sigh* everyone keeps saying the stuff about it being passage based, so I know it's true. That said, ek 1001 biology has helped me to diagnose a number of non-passage based deficiencies, that I think will still prove helpful to me when I begin the more passage heavy section of my prep (using TBR bio passages)

So do you guys review the ek subject chapter prior to doing the 1001 stuff, or just do the questions cold? I can sort of figure out the passage material from the stems, but I get killed on the standalone stuff. I've been doing a passage every morning without reading the chapter and I'm probably around 50% :(

dmf2682,

I read the chapter pretty in depth before I even attempt any questions. I would highly recommend you do the same. Also, if you're getting killed on discretes, I wouldn't worry about it too much early on because EK1001 likes to incorporate material from later chapters into the discretes from earlier chapters as well. I think your strategy might be good to use on the 30 minute exams after you've already reviewed stuff, that way you know what in particular you need to review more extensively, but for the 1001 you should skim the chapter at a minimum.

Lecture 1: 99/113 =87.6%=12
Lecture 2: 97/108 = 89.8% = 13
Lecture 3: 87/111=78%=11
Lecture 4: 98/113=86.7%=12
Lecture 5: 96/111=86%=12
Lecture 6: 89/111=80%=11
Lecture 7: 84/114 = 74% = 10
Lecture 8: 83/107 ~ 78% =11

Update:
Lecture 9: 99/113 = 87.6% = 12. After 1001 biology questions and numerous passages, I managed to score right where I started.....
My errors in decreasing frequency were: 1. lack of knowledge 2. failing to read all answer choices (so not picking best answers) 3. a few semantic processing errors.

Review: Overall this is a great book for drilling the fundamentals. It's also a great tool that really emphasizes the importance of using the question stem as a source of information. Questions, where it seems to be a close call between 2 answer choices, can usually be solved by analyzing the question stem. While the book lacked alot of experimental passages, I feel that it helped me get a sense of how to read mcat bio type passages and how important it is to attack the question stem. I should add that I've also done some TPR Hyperlearning Bio passages. The main difference between the two books is that Ek has much trickier question stems, but the passages are much more straight forward and passage based questions usually consist of finding the detail in the passage. TPR however, tends to have much more straightforward question stems, but the passages, particularly experimental passages can be significantly more convoluted. Additionally, the passage based questions in TPR often require 1 to make a 2 or 3 step deduction to get the answer, while EK questions usually only require a 1 or 2 step deduction.

I am in awe to those of you getting 10+ scores consistently!

I just started my EK1001 Bio, I didn't study from EK materials but Kaplan method. I get the vibe from EK that they really like to test on amino acids :scared:

Lecture 1: 78/113 = 69%...9
Lecture 2: 81/108 = 75%...10

Will see how I do on lecture 3

There are mixed opinions in SDN about EK bio 1001. Some people said that they are good practice. Others said, they are not representative of the actual MCAT. However, I know two people first hand who used it and both of them were able to score a 12 on BS after scoring 8 on their first MCAT attempt. They both said these practice questions are easier than the actual stuff, but are good in helping ones know the concepts pretty well. One of them averaged 13 on EK bio 1001...meaning he was very good in Bio. If you have TPRH, use it after using EK bio 1001 because it is a good source of practice as well.

That is the reverse for me...I almost always got all the stand alone questions right and usually missed one or two questions per passage.

Did you take the sections cold? Without having read the ek section first?

I finished reading ek for fun and will read it again taking notes as part of an extended sn2ed schedule. My diagnostic indicates bio strength but chem weakness so that will be the next 'fun' book. When is your exam 101?

I read the corresponding chapter before doing bio 1001. My exam is July 6, I just took a TPR test after a month of content review...my score was 20 overall...7PS, 4VR, 9BS. I have not taken a look at organic yet, and also I have not done the high yield chapters in physics (sound, wave, electrostatics, fluid, light and optics). I think there is room for improvement for me. Gotta work on my verbal and physics. I am just shooting for a 28+ since I am applying to DO only.

Will post after I'm done with Lecture 4!

2: 78%
3: 75%
4: 76%
5: 68%
8: 67%
9: 70%
... can't find scores for the ones not written (probably around 70-80%)
It helped me understand some concepts and I think you learn much better from mistakes.
I would say not to worry about the scores you get, but about why you got lower scores... In my case, i didn't memorize a lot of stuff (hormones, atp during glycolysis, digestion etc) which I eventually memorized. I was also a lot more focused during actual tests... there was just too much bio for me on several days

But what really matters:
aamc: avg BS: 11.57 (12's toward end), actual mcat=15!!
So idk how well the EK represents the mcat.

So I basically started ek1001 on friday! Here's my breakdown so far
Lecture 1: 68.4%
Lecture 2: 69.4%
Lecture 3: 62.2% (yikes! Time to brush up on micro)
(Had to skip Lecture 4 because the girl who gave the book to me basically only answered that Lecture and a couple passages from Lecture 1)
Lecture 5: 67.6%
Lecture 6: 70.3%
Lecture 7: 69.3%

Scoring in the upper 60 as my average. Not too bad, I'm finding it very helpful in reinforcing facts we need to know. Let's see how Lectures 8 and 9 go tomorrow. :)

EDIT: Just finished ek1001 BIO! Wooot.
Lecture 8: 66% (boo)
Lecture 9: 75% :)

Brings my overall average to a 68.5%! I don't think that's too bad :)

Average 76% = 10..... Will go over again any lectures I scored < 75% ...ie lectures 3, 8,9. I know my average is not great but I guess this is a learning process.

Are these scores from EK1001 or from the 30-minute exams at the end of the EK content review bio book. If these scores are from the latter, you can say that you are OK in bio. If they are from the former, you need to do some more work on your bio. EK bio 1001 is not that difficult. My average in EK 1001 is 10+ and I scored a 9 in BS on my first TPR full length. Therefore, a 10 average in EK 1001 does not show that ones bio background is strong-- however a 10 is not that bad either.

These are from the EK 1001 book but I didn't finish my review when I did the questions. Also, I don't really care for getting a 35+. I'm aiming for a state school and a 32 is their mean for matriculated. So I'll be perfectly happy with a 11-11-11 ish. Plus I still have a little over a month to work on practice questions before I sit for the test.

Also, I don't trust TPRH or any other testing company's full length or diagnostic. I think they make them harder than the real deal. After all, most of them guarantee to raise your score.. Now if you told me you were scoring 10+ on EK1001 and got a 9 on the MCAT BS section, then maybe I'd be more concerned.

You might be right... as so many on SDN have told me not to worry about my score on TPR... The FL I took was hard and some people said when they switch from TPR FL to AAMC FL, their scores increase dramatically. But I like TPR because of that since it makes you believe you need to study more in order to get a good score on the real stuff. TPR PS is 'crazilly' hard. I was told by a friend who got a great score in BS not to neglect organic, which I have been doing. I dont think EK is that good for organic though.

Maybe that is encouraging for you but it does quite the opposite for me. If I am reading passages and doing problems that go way over my head and are too difficult, I get discouraged and lose my confidence which spirals into a positive feedback cycle of just doing even worse. On the other hand, when I do a mix of questions that are challenging, easy, and a bit difficult, I am able to regain my confidence with the questions I can answer correctly. The EK1001 books for physics, ochem, and genchem aren't much good. I already bought them so I will do them for the sake of not wasting material. I guess they're good to make sure you understand how to answer straight forward questions. I wish they would have included passages like they did for biology.

Update! Been away from the MCAT for a while, decided to postpone my test.

Lecture 5: 83%....finally got my first 12 :D

Endocrine system rocks!

Revival!!!

I'm going to rename this to EK 10 because I'm finished through lesson 6 and every score has been a 10. Using this scale I did the same with TPRH.

Who else thinks that lecture 3 (microbio) is the most twisted of all? I got 8 on that one

Regardless, I think it's still a good practice.

Just finished all the questions for Lecture 1. Didn't even bother seeing how many I got wrong because I'm pretty sure I'll end up with a score of like 5 or 6. These questions are so in depth/tricky/convoluted. I really hope MCAT will be a little more straight forward.

I felt that chapter 1 was immensely harder than everything else, but that's because I haven't taken any biochem and basic concepts were not touched on by my general bio class. I was surprised I pulled the 10 on it. The rest of the book is more reasonable, but you have to keep thinking "how is the question stem trying to trick me here?" most of the time.

If I remember correctly, that is one that had more questions from other chapters. I don't think that's fair for the book to do.
