I submitted the application in July and the supplemental on September 12th. I'm an OOS non-traditional student. I was a division 1 athlete during undergrad and handled some mental health issues during that time so I faced some struggles and I'm making up for the impact it had on me now. I've been doing a masters in biology and have over a 3.60 GPA in my program, a good amount of shadowing hours, research that we are working towards publishing, as well as volunteering, being in a pre-dental club, and attending dental events. Just being real, I understand that my DAT is not the strongest part of my application. I won't share all my sections but the first time I took the DAT I got a 16 in PA and 16 in QR. The second time I improved my PA to a 20, reading to a 23, biology to a 19 while some sections were average and I did even lower on the QR and I was devastated about that. But I highlighted my best self in my applications and I know that I WILL be a great dentist.Congrats ! When did you submit and what are your stats if you don’t mind?
Thank you so much for sharing your story. I have average scores and average grades but I’ve been able to hear back from schools thankfully 🙂. However, Meharry is my dream school so I’m just patiently and anxiously waiting to hear back from them.I submitted the application in July and the supplemental on September 12th. Don't get too caught up in comparing on SDN. Everyone on here will have you thinking that you don't have a chance. I always say "comparison is the thief of joy". Yes, schools factor numbers as the biggest part of your application, but there are other parts of you that are very important that some schools will consider. I know that there's no guarantee that I'm accepted yet, but I'm hoping that I'll rock it out and get that blessing this year. If not I'll take the DAT one more time and I will make it. If you get interviews you are in the running with everyone else so I'm excited to show them who I am. I wish everyone the best this cycle 🙂
Thank you! It has taken sooo much work to improve myself as an applicant, but I am better for it now. I don't have the traditional story. I didn't even know that I wanted to be a dentist until I was a junior in college, I had to take a pre-requisite class more than once, and have tremendously improved my GPA. I'm not saying that it will be easy, but the best thing you can do for yourself is pick yourself up if you fail instead of staying where you are. I met a dentist who applied 3 times to dental school to get in and she really inspired me that it can happen if you are determined. So don't give up. You'll get interviews. I've already decided that if it doesn't happen this year that it will happen for me another year. But God please let it happen this year 🤣My first interview is in a little over 2 weeks so wish me luck! Time for interview prep.Thank you so much for sharing your story. Your grit and your resilience will definitely get you the results you are seeking. Good luck to you!
Yeah my story is a little similar too. Started my dental journey my senior year of undergrad in Spring lol but nonetheless, our stories are what make us unique! I’ve already taken a gap year so hoping to get in this year lolThank you! It has taken sooo much work to improve myself as an applicant, but I am better for it now. Absolutely beautiful story. I agree with your statement about comparing yourself to others, it can drastically diminish your confidence and certainly is the thief of joy. We're all in these forums, but they can be toxic and some people will truly go out of their way to make you feel as though you will never succeed, never reach your goal and that couldn't be further from the truth. Something I emphasize to my mentees is to trust YOUR process. Everyone's journey is unique. I've heard stories about people with high scores/GPAs getting denied and people with lower scores getting accepted. Stats are just stats, and they're just a fraction of your story. Of course, do the best that you can, but overall, it's best to just aim to be the best version of yourself possible and highlight that in your application. And if you fail, dust yourself and try again! It's all apart of the journey.I submitted the application in July and the supplemental on September 12th. I'm an OOS non-traditional student. Thank you ☺️ I was honest about my struggles on my application but you have to show that your weaknesses turned into strengths or that you have overcome what you were facing. I’m hoping that some of my determination is what got me these interviews. It’s always easy to think about quitting and a lot of people maybe would have by now. I refuse to give up. They want people that are going to be resilient and not give up when things get hard. If you get an interview they like you on paper and believe that you CAN do it. They wouldn’t spend their time interviewing you if they didn’t think you were truly a candidate. So I’m trying to remind myself that to calm my nerves I’m excited and nervous all in one.Absolutely beautiful story. Again, thank you again for sharing! I'm super excited for you and everyone who has received an interview so far. I personally love seeing people succeed, especially URM students 😊 Best of luck to you and everyone!
Good luck! Be yourself and it’ll fall into place.Wow all these responses are so heartwarming **crying emoji** even though I haven’t received an interview from Meharry yet, I do have an interview next week at another school and I just know what’s meant to happen for me will happen!! Much love to everyone!!
Those that received interviews, do you mind sharing what dates were available?
The only date I saw that was available pre-December was Friday, November 22nd when I picked my date. After that, I believe they were December 6th and 13th.
I think there were several January interviews starting January 10th and every following Friday in January. Those that received interviews, do you mind sharing what dates were available?
I believe so. They will send you the link to your email.Does everyone who applies get an automatic supplemental application?
