I talked to some teachers at nova last week and they said they don't even look at pass fail schools for there specialty programs :/

Yeah I got in to the Louisville School of Dentistry and they have all the specialty programs offered there, they said the same thing about P/F schools, they don't look at them. Also Roseman costs an insane amount of money, 440k for four years. That being said I really enjoyed the interview and the school is really cool, it's a good school if you want to be a general dentist and don't mind paying through the nose to do so.

Oh yeah it definitely sounds like a good school. I just wish they had more credibility :/ and it's super difficult getting rid of the option to specialize. They make soooo much more

I tried calling but no luck. Let us know if anyone gets through!

Hey guys, I'm not sure about this, but I have a theory of why it seems like they have not called many people yet. There were approximately 50-60 people on my interview date and that was only half a day, so let's say they interview 100-110 people per day, and they have 7-8 interviewing dates (obviously they interviewed less people on 11-22, the last day). That gives you almost 700-800 interviews for 80 seats. Now I'm wondering two things: if everybody had that many people on their interview date? and if anyone has received any post-December interviews yet? Because in fact, if they did over-interview people, it doesn't make sense for them to interview even more people. This is just a theory of course.

There were only 4 interview days (2 in october, 2 in november) with each approximately 100 students, so that's 400 not 800 like you estimated.

There will likely be more calls. The theories are entertaining though 🙂

But in January? lol Do you think they are done giving out December acceptances?

Join up!

I'm not sure what they are up to or what there plans are. One thing that I remember from being a predent is rationalizing things cause the wait is brutal. Admissions officers tend to be somewhat simple. Odds are they are busy, still reaching out, or something else more plausible 🙂

I emailed the admissions office, and they are done with the Dec 2 acceptances (and just said that they would continue to accept students throughout the cycle).

i cant believe they have selected 80 students ! but only 10 have announced themselves on SDN !

SDN is a small part of the entire applicant population. Think about all the guys on the DAT forums with 35 DAT scores and 4.8 GPAs. The SDN effect.

From an amalgamation of other SDN posts, this is somewhat the list of P/F dental schools:

H/P/F:
Columbia
UCLA

P/F:
UCSF (I believe H/P/F after first 2 years)
Harvard
UConn
ECU
Roseman
LECOM (grades kept on file if you choose to specialize?)
Case (may have moved back to graded, seems unclear and haven't properly researched)

UCSF somewhat boasted having roughly 50% of the graduating class getting accepted into residency programs (including GPR and AEGD I am assuming). I'm sure the P/F program hinders you for some specialty schools, but not all of them. Besides, recommendation letters, research, basic resume, number of procedures done in the given field, Undergrad GPA for some, and the number and quality of externships have a lot to do with it. The toughest part comes down to whether the name of the school really plays a role, and I have heard lots of different sources say that it does and say that it doesn't. It can be a bit of a gamble to attend a new school that has yet to build a solid reputation, but in some ways the P/F could really help. You won't be beaten down from your 4 years of competition and constant stress. You'll have more time to pursue extracurriculars, like volunteering as well as perfect your craft early on since you aren't cramming for daily tests. Maybe I'm just trying to rationalize all of this for you guys, I don't know. Maybe I just value my own personal health and well-being over the "promise" of a specialty (or maybe I don't, I really haven't decided yet). All I'm saying is that probably 60% of pre-dents (I'm making up this figure) go into dental school desiring that specialty, but only the top 10% of students (may even be less than that) generally succeed.

I received this message the other day and thought it would be helpful for other's who might have similar questions:
"Hi! I see that you're a current Roseman student. I just got accepted and am trying to decide between Roseman and another (cheaper) private school. If you have some time, would you mind answering a few questions for me about your school and your experience? I really appreciate your help.

  • If you were accepted to more than one school, what made you chose Roseman? Did cost play a role for you? Do you think the extra expense of Roseman is worth it?
I was really fortunate to have almost half a dozen choices of where to attend, and cost definitely is something to consider. For me though, since I didn't have a state school (at the time) they were all expensive. Because of this, I had a plan to try to get either a military or NHSC scholarship, something that would help me leave dental school without $300k+ in loans. I was fortunate and got a scholarship, but there are many that don't. Weigh your options and think long and hard about any dental school, because the cost for most of us is very high. That being said, Roseman is a really good school, I've been really happy with my experience so far. It's not without it's faults, but it's virtues far outweigh any curriculum irritation that I've had from time to time.
  • Does your school have active professional student organizations? Do you have organized community service opportunities? Do you have frequent "lunch n' learns" or seminars/presentations from dental companies, potential employers, etc?
Yes, ASDA and ADEA are very active. There are many clubs at the school, and there have been some really good activities and service opportunities. If you want to be involved and be active in any of these things, the opportunities are definitely there. 1st year we had lots of lunch and learns, 2nd year we haven't had as many but there are some from time to time.
  • The block schedule is something that's hugely appealing to me about Roseman, how do you like the system? What are the major flaws you see in the curriculum? Have you ever had to do remediation and re-do exams (also, how common is that? Is it only just a handful or people who do remediation, or can it happen to anyone?
Hands down the best part about the school is the block schedule. Everything is geared to helping you learn and master what is important. The teacher's aren't you enemy, they are really there to help you learn what's important rather than wasting your time by trying to trick you. Remediation isn't a big deal, it's another chance to iron out things you didn't understand very clearly and get more experience and practice. Most students pass the first time, but they put in a good amount of time in to studying too.
  • Do you have anatomy lab with cadavers or models?
Models as of now, there were talks of an cadaver lab, but there just isn't the space right now. I liked it that way, we learned it well just without the nasty formaldehyde smell haha. In a few cases with head and neck anatomy, our teacher did bring in some cadaver specimens that gave us more real life experience.
  • Do you have to buy your own ivorine teeth to practice on? How much is each one? Also, do you have to purchase your own scrubs or are they included in the tuition?
Yep, you buy extra teeth at about $1.50/tooth. Buy your own scrubs too, but again it's a pittance compared to the overall cost of dental school.
  • What does your typical week look like, and how much free time do you get? What do you do for fun in South Jordan?
We usually have half of the day in a didactic (ie boring) lecture class along with team activities and quizzes, and the other half is a lab project of some kind. It is really nice to get a break from straight lecture, I've really liked it that way. There are lots of outdoor activities in and around South Jordan (hiking, fishing, golfing, mountain biking, snowboarding/wakeboarding). Lots of organized or pickup leagues for pretty much any sport (the D2s are the current mens league softball champions, having beaten the D3 class in the finals 😛). There are clubs and restaurants in SLC that a fair number of people go to also if that's your thing. There really seems to be something for everyone, whatever your personal preferences are.

I appreciate your insight!"

Alright, I have decided to put down the deposit for Roseman! It might not be where I end up, but as of right now it is my front runner.

Good choice!! I know some people attending and the 2018 class is going to be awesome.

for everyone that is putting a deposit down, when is the deposit due? thanks goodluck to everyone!

35 days from the date of offer, which would be 01/06 if i'm not mistaken.

I think people are a little off in their specialization talk considering that it seems like money motivation rather than what they want to become, my assumption. Just be a GD and buy an office right away then hire 2 or 3 dentists to work for you. Bring on a specialist in a a few years and buy up the next office in your area that comes up for sale and repeat. I have 2 friends doing this now and it seems like an easy formula to follow. 3 years out of school and office number 2 or 3 is coming on line.

Also, they both paid 5k+ to dental consultant companies who told them where the best zip codes where in the state they wanted to be in. The areas with the lowest dentist to population density and in areas with a high income population. Theses types of companies will hound you with free food to use there services during your final years in dental school. Pay them and listen and you will be fine. Just my opinion.

Sorry I forgot my friends eye opening advice. Most dental students are worker bees. Meaning they have no desire to own a business and work for themselves. They want a paycheck to cover their enormous debt. Therefore, they can be snapped up as employees fairly easily.

Well guys, my decision is official. I put my deposit in the mail yesterday! Looking forward to seeing everyone in August 🙂

Just declined the admission offer - good luck to everyone at roseman!

So, deposits need to be post-marked w/in 35 days of the acceptance email, correct?

Congrats to everyone accepted! Does anyone know when January acceptances will be given?!?

So, Roseman's office staff just came back from winter vacation today and presumably have received all the acceptance packets/deposits. Does anyone have an idea as to how long it'll take to get a confirmation that they got the packet?

Has anyone had their admissions packet receipt confirmed? How long did it take?

I got my email today as well! This means that after today they will probably start sending out their acceptances again. Good luck everyone!

I was looking over last years forum and it looks like they did a second batch of acceptances at the end of Jan. They looked at newly interviewed applicants as well as those previously interviewed.

Well I wonder if they did any post december interviews this year (which I dont think they did). It made sense to wait until the end of january last year (because of jan interviews) but I honestly cant make up why they are waiting so long this year. I mean the longer they wait, the more chance of losing qualified applicants to other schools. I just wish someone could give us more information.
