***The Official UMichigan Class of 2018 Interview/Acceptance Thread***

Do we need a specific computer here? I can't remember what they said at the interview.

Also, do any of you know what solution we should be storing our collected teeth in?
Not sure about the computer, but I think if you throw those teef in a 10:1 water:bleach solution you should be all set.

So I received a call on dec. 2 with an offer for admissions but I just received a rejection email tonight...Really hoping that this is a mistake. Did anyone receive this email after being accepted?

That's a terrible mistake if it is one. I would think the likelihood of an actual rejection is not very high if the call was an offer of admission and the email was a rejection. Now if you had gotten an email with an acceptance and a call for a rejection, that might be something to worry about.

Either way, ask them whenever you get the chance.

The email could be a mistake. I can't imaging calling up a list of people who are placed on rejected pile for offers. Call them up and verify!

I was told that rejections and acceptance for the next batch will go out in late Jan after the deadline for the 1st round acceptance has passed.

got a rejection e-mail from here this morning - interviewed last month.

Where does it say that we need to collect teeth?

Has anyone received a packet or any other information (other than the acceptance email) about what we need to do before June?

you should get an acceptance letter in the mail, it basically says what the email says

just wired my deposit. now it's really real.

Anyone know what's happening with interviews??
I actually received an interview offer from here on Wednesday. I was so shocked and I had lost hope but I guess they decided to give me a shot! good luck to everyone that is waiting, and hopefully good news will come your way soon.

You guys have pretty much nailed down everything I have come up with on my own list - my only concern is that UCLA has pretty much all of the good qualities of Michigan, but in addition it has awesome weather all year round. I'm from SD and have lived in southern California my whole life so it would be very difficult for me to give up that great weather when I have an offer from an excellent school like UCLA that is so close to home for me as well. I'm heavily leaning UCLA at this point, but my mind seems to change every single day. I absolutely loved Michigan when I interviewed and I know I can't go wrong either way, I just think I'll have too hard a time dealing with those Ann Arbor winters, especially since I've never even been in the snow !

Definitely having the same problem. I looove the Michigan school and the plethora of opportunities and student life available. But as someone who has also lived in southern California for all my life, I am currently trying to decide between Michigan and Loma Linda, aka harsh winters vs. sunshine. Are there any OOS students who have any input on why they felt this school outweighed moving to a new state and being away from family/friends? Grazie in advance!

I didn't see it anywhere, but my dentist suggested I collect them and I know of other dental students who have done the same.

As a current D1 at UofM SOD, we did not have have to collect teeth, so unless the school has specifically asked you to, I would not worry about it. I would think your matriculation into school would be very similar to ours this past year. Also, keep your head up everyone. I interviewed the very last day they held interviews and was accepted (along with a few other people that also interviewed that day!). Good luck to everyone, and congrats to those who have been accepted! Absolutely LOVE UMSOD!

GO BLUE!

I'm not at the University of Michigan yet, but I am in a similar situation and I'll tell you why I'm going to pick UofM over Loma Linda. To preface this, I'm very religious and wanted to be in California so I went to LLU WANTING to be impressed... It's not like I was looking for reasons to not go there, it was quite the opposite. 1- The price difference between the two is pretty significant. 2- For a school as expensive as LLU, you'd think they'd have better facilities. Theirs were actually the worst ones I saw in all my interviews. 3- The student who took us around had several honest, but negative, things to say, including the fact that she would graduate late because she didn't have enough patients to fill her requirements and she strongly disliked how patients were organized and assigned to students. She said she's done tons of new patient exams and very little work on patients. 4- There are no extramural rotations during your 4th year. You're either in the school clinic or doing community service, which is great, but you're still under a very watchful eye. It's not like doing a rotation where you ARE the dentist in that moment. Anyway, for me, these things were significant enough. Not to mention I felt like the quality of education and reputation were better at UofM.

How many students do they have interviewing on the day of the interview?

If I were in your shoes I would hands down pick Michigan. UCLA is the only school that I would choose over Michigan out of the schools that I interviewed at (UCLA,UCSF,UPenn,USC,Western, Michigan) and it was an extremely, extremely tough decision for me to make. I loved everything about Michigan but ultimately had to go with UCLA because of how close to home it is coupled with its great reputation. I don't think you can go wrong with picking Michigan in your situation.

Haverfoods, just out of curiosity, when did you interview at USC? I feel I've met you there on 10/17. Maybe not...

In all honesty, I don't exactly remember - but that sounds about right.....you might be on to something.

Where do you plan on living as a Dentist? & Where do you want to build your connections/friends?

I think I briefly asked you about how the MMI is at Michigan. 10/17 was a Thursday. If I am right, we were in the same group for the PBL exercise- with Will and Zach. Haha I am just curious and trying to connect the dots

If 10/17 was a Thursday, then no unfortunately I'm not who you think I am. I have classes on Thursdays and was lucky enough to schedule all my interviews so I wouldn't miss any school.

I just received an email for an interview here on 1/24 and i was wondering if theres a high probability that i wont get in since im OOS (florida) and my interview date seems to be the last one. im really grateful for the opportunity but i also know that even if i get waitlisted, there will be hardly any movement on the list. thanks!

From what I recall, she said in the past on average she uses 5-10 people. I kind of also remember her saying there was a time where she didn't touch the waitlist

^^^ do you wish to attend Mich? If the answer is yes, attend the interview.

Thanks for your insight, guys! I def appreciate it.

@Demilaax : The plan is to eventually return back to California. Saturation aside, do you believe that it would be more difficult because I would have already made connections/been established in the East?
@HaverfoodsDDS: I went to UCLA undergrad and the dental students are amazingly friendly and accomplished individuals; congrats on joining them!

If you plan to go back, you're more than likely better off attending UCLA or Loma Linda.
UMICH should be your alternative if you don't get accepted into either.
Good luck!

I have a question about the deposit deadline. The email says the deadline is 30 days from the date of the email (Dec. 2nd). Does that mean January 1st at midnight?

I'll send them an email too. Maybe they'll check it it at some point over break?

I would assume close of business Jan 2

When you go to pay your deposit it says it's due Jan 1st.

Hello! I was recently accepted into UMSOD and was hoping for a little guidance. I live all the way in Arizona so I don't really know anyone out there. Is there a place for the dental students to connect to find roommates. I am looking to sign a lease soon seeing that they are probably quickly taken up in the college town. If you have any info please let me know!

Anyone heard anything from the school? are they sending out the next round of acceptances/rejections ?

Congrats to all current acceptances into the Class of 2018, starting summer 2014! See you all soon!

-class of 2017 candidate
feel free to ask me any questions regarding school via pm.
Good luck to the remainder waiting for replies!

I've been looking everywhere for the official "start date" for the class of 2018, but I can't find anything! Can anyone point me to the right direction? The only thing that I've gathered is that it's late June/early July. I'm trying to plan out some travel plans so knowing the dates would be very useful. Can't wait to meet my peers! Thanks.

best to just call the admissions office today and ask them directly. post here when you find out.

Just called for a different thing and asked your question for you. Jim said orientation starts June 23. That is when we absolutely need to be there.

That's like no time at all.
