Is the 2x2 photo required upon submission of the secondary app, or will they send an email requesting it before our interview?

I think you are supposed to email one to Carolyn Oakes with your name and AADSAS number in the subject line upon submission of the supplemental. I think in past years you were also supposed to attach it to your supplemental app, but I didn't see anywhere to do that so I just emailed mine.

About to submit my supplemental! We shouldn't expect to hear back about interviews until mid-August, right? I heard that on another forum, but wasn't sure if it was legit or not! Thanks!

Historically, UNC doesn’t say anything til August-ish

Did anyone receive a complete e-mail after submitting the supplemental and app fee? I submitted 7/3 and haven't received one yet.

I submitted 6/5 and just got the email 45 minutes ago, saying it’s now under review.

As a side note: does anybody know how long it takes UNC to start sending out news after receiving the application complete email? I know last year it was around 8/15 they started sending invites, but could it be earlier this year if they’re receiving apps earlier due to the soft open in may?

Would anyone be willing to post the UNC supplement questions? I'm having to wait on my counselor b/c she's backed up and insists on looking at my application before submitting and finishing the committee letter packet, and was hoping to get some of their supplement done early.

Is this what the email says:
This email is to let you know that we have received your AADSAS application, UNC online supplemental application with forms and fee. Your application is currently in the process of being reviewed. It will proceed through a multileveled review in which we consider such factors as your GPA, academic history, DAT scores, letters of evaluation/recommendation, investigation in the field of dentistry and all other factors presented in your application.

I received this (above) email twice - once in June and once in July. Exact same email.

I sent the picture to Carolyn Oakes as instructed. I did not receive a confirmation of this, but I did get an automated "I am out of the office for a few days" type email.

Did anyone get anything different than the above? Just want to make sure that my picture does not fall through the cracks and I am forever cast aside at UNC.

I submitted 06/26 and was verified on 07/03. I got the UNC supp the very next day, and just submitted 07/19. I haven't heard any confirmation yet.

Same happened to me. I sent the picture a week or so after my supplemental submission, though. She hasn't replied to my other emails either

Just an update. My AADSAS app. was verfied on 07/03 and I received the email for the supplemental the next day. I completed the supplemental on 07/19 and today, 07/24 I received confirmation that all my information had been received and that my application was under review. Hope this helps.

I got a confirmation on 7/24 saying that my app is under review. I think traditionally they don't give out interviews till late August or September.

Has anybody received replies from Carolyn Oakes regarding the 2x2 or anything? I’ve sent her 2 or 3 emails and no response.

For the supplemental application, does anyone what the character limit is for the short essays? If none, how many character do you think they expect?

I don't think there is a character limit? Or at least I never reached it in my essays. I would keep the essays short, hence the name, I think mine were on average 4-6 sentences. Best of luck!

Received a "complete application" email from UNC on July 17. I am an NC resident. Hope to hear from them soon!

We should probably start hearing from them in the next two weeks.

Historically, UNC interviews in-state students in October and November, so if in-state I wouldn't expect to hear back until September.

In the past, most in-state students have indeed interviewed after September. I was invited for an interview last year (invite came on August 16th) for their September interview date and it seemed like more than half were out-of-state students. There were still quite a few number of NC residents there though.

Is the interview just run of the mill conversational closed file?

Does anyone else who's an NC resident have this on their application status page?:

If you would like to apply for a reconsideration or appeal of your NC Residency determination use this link: (link)

This doesn't mean they don't consider me an NC resident, right? Because I've been invited for an interview with ECU (only considers NC residents) and my residency page says I'm a resident. The wording is just weird.

Yes. You’ll need to provide your number assigned after you go through the link. It’s how they verify if you’re in-state.

Okay, thanks. I clicked on the link and my RCN is already there, which says I’m an nc resident on ncresidency. This means I should be good, right? Is that what you have?

I forget if there’s a field to paste the RCN on the supplemental. I know for ECU we did.

The faculty interviews are actually open file. I remember they had my DAT scores, GPA, personal statement, extracurriculars, etc. They were so laid back though! There are 2 faculty interviews and 1 student interview. All of them are around 20-30 minutes. I don't remember if the student interview was open file or not, since we didn't talk about any aspect of my application.

Let me know if you guys have any other questions. Orientation for D1 is on Wednesday, so if I don't know something I can just ask someone on your behalf! 🙂

Are most students living by themselves or rooming together?? What would you say is the average cost of living for someone living alone and someone living by themselves (including groceries, rent, etc.)

I might not be the best person to answer this question. Since I am married and my wife and I have kids, my situation might be a little different than most. From what I saw in our class facebook page, many do look to room together. There are also plenty of upperclassmen who posted after Dec 1st, looking for roommates as well. How much you spend a month really does depend on your spending habits and from what I have noticed, prices in NC/Chapel Hill are not significantly higher than most other places. For a 2 bedroom, you can look to spend around 1200-1400 on average, but you could get cheaper if you find a good deal.

Were the faculty/student interviews 1-on-1? Any questions you didn't expect?

And this might seem silly, but do you think everyone is on a completely level playing field once they get an interview, or are some students interviewed more likely to get in than others based on DAT/GPA? Cause my scores are pretty dope, but my interview skills will need some practicing haha.

Yes, there were all 1 on 1. Overall, it was actually a really easy interview day. All of my interviews were casual and conversational. My last interviewer did ask me at the very beginning "Why should we accept you to UNC?" in a very serious tone. It took me a bit off guard.

I would say that if they invited you for an interview, you look good on paper enough to merit an acceptance. With that being said, they will look at all aspects of your application. The interview is actually really important though! Each interviewer gives a student a "score" and for the last few years, to get accepted as an OOS, you basically have to get perfect scores from all interviewers. If I remember correctly, the average interview score for in state students was slightly less than that. They're not out to get you, they just want to make sure you are a good fit for the program.

Thanks a lot!

Congrats to the people who have received interview invites to UNC! I am a NC resident. I'm praying to hear from them soon. My primary was verified June 24th and my secondary was received July 17th. keeping my fingers crossed.

They interview only one Saturday a month right? Does anyone know typically how many get invited per interview session?

Also, is there any validity to the claim I've read that neighboring OOS applicants have a better shot of getting in than other OOS applicants?

Yes, there is usually an interview session in September, October, November and that's it. Each interview usually has around 60-70 applicants I believe.
To your second question, most of our OOS students I know of come from closer states like FL, SC, VA and other East Coast (not sure if it's just because there are more of those that apply). That being said, we have some OOS in my class from Utah, Ohio, Michigan, and a few other places not on the East Coast.
