***The Official Univ, of Maryland Class of 2017 Interview/Acceptance Thread***

How long did it take for people to hear back after the interview?

If its been more than three weeks is it a bad sign/ is there anything to do about it?

I received an e-mail a week after my interview letting me know I was in. I also know a handful of people that heard back within a week too, but you know what they say, no news is good news.

received/submitted supp app yesterday, called for interview today. Will be there on the 27th. Haven't been accepted anywhere yet so hoping for the best!

I will see you at the interview O2ShoottheJ

Sounds good! Have you been accepted anywhere yet?

I know they're interviewing tomorrow as well, i'm hoping I don't get a call saying the class has been filled and I no longer have an interview

I heard that there are still spots open and interviews go until March.
I had pre-dec interview, waitlisted at UMDNJ.
I had Jan interview at VCU, no news which is bad at this point.
Invited for an interview this Monday from Maryland.

They best not! Already booked my train ticket. I'll see you all there.

hey everyone, I submitted my secondary yesterday...do they email or call for interviews? praying/hoping I'm lucky enough to get one!

Got a secondary app today- will fill out this weekend- hoping to hear back for an interview on Monday!!! 😀 :xf: Btw- I love Maryland! Would an interview be for a seat or for waitlist?

So I was doing math today, and for a OOS student its looking to be close to $100k a year at UMD when you factor in housing and food. Does this sound about right?

The financial lady at the interview session estimated to be 102k a year. You are almost there.

I'm hoping to get in-state tuition after 1 year, but even so how is the average graduation debt only $180k or so if total would be ~280-400k depending on in-state vs out-of-state? As far as I know almost no one works through dental school and the same loans are available to everyone.

People's parents paying a large portion of something?

My parents are deceased so I have to find my own ways. Yeah it would be nice to have an adviser from dental school to explain everything to us.

I'm going to visit again over my spring break and will try to meet with financial aid. Every practicing dentist on DentalTown seems to agree that it's just not worth it if you graduate with debt over 250-300k, but even if I got in state tuition at my state school (UMDNJ) the calculations were still something like 72k/yr when you factor in everything so 288k at graduation which seems absurd so I have no idea how the average debt coming out is about half of that. I am not getting any help with financing my dental education and have a negligible amount saved up currently (and I'm sure even the people who worked all throughout college still don't have that much compared to dental school costs) so I'd love to know how that can be possible.

Well dude you should attend UMDNJ. In-state tuition is damn good. I wish I was in your situation but I have already got rejected from my state school.

Maryland is tough on IS rates; I would expect to pay 2 years at the OOS rate and then 2 years at the IS rate. Seriously though, I'm in the same situation: I am 100% going to make sure I get the IS rate after two years, and expect to graduate with about 280K worth of debt. Gaining residency is doable if you put a whole-hearted effort to do so, but it won't happen within a year.

UMB offers a top rate education and personally I feel its worth the money to attend. Graduating with a UMB degree carries so much weight in the dental community and will certainly help when looking for employment after school.

In addition, UMB students find a way to reduce their loans while in school. During my interview we were told that the largest debt among the graduating class was 290K, which is still significantly cheaper than most private school costs.

Hopes this helps and looking forward to meeting you next August!

P.S. I'm from Boston, so I don't have a "state school" acceptance to compare with, but I still feel that UMB offers an excellent education for the money.

What makes you so sure it will take 2 years to gain in state residency? This is not the first time I'm hearing that, but I'm not sure why that would be. It's a difference of ~30k/yr 🙁

I definitely can't say that I will get residency with 100% certainty, but from the OOS students I talked to who attend UMB currently, attaining residency is simply a matter of initiative and persistence. Two years of completing the requirements usually grants residency; if not, there is an appeal process that also seems to grant residency for OOS students. To become a resident, you must be able to prove that your sole reason for being in Maryland is not just to attend school. Switching your driver's license and car registration to Maryland, paying taxes and paying for rent/living in Maryland, and becoming involved in the local community should all help out with gaining residency. Like you said, however, no one can be 100% sure, but it seems very likely and very doable.

The difference is about ~35k/yr as the average tuition OOS for Years 1 and 2 is $72,969.50 and the average tuition IS for Years 3 and 4 is $38,003.50. With the IS rate, 2 years almost equals the OOS rate for 1 year. If you somehow manage to gain residency after 1 year (very tough), the savings become astronomical.

Hopes this helps in explain where I'm coming from and the exact math involved between IS and OOS.

Pre-December interview and still now word. At least I'm in somewhere but it sucks not hearing from your state school, especially when you live a few blocks from the school.

👍 WORD. Sucks, doesn't it? I know the feeling all too well

I've heard that Maryland Dental Students are cut-throat when it comes to academics. Any insight on this?

I'm in the same boat.👎 It's looking more and more like I will be moving away from my wife for a year while she finishes her PhD at Hopkins.🙁

Hi reddevil,

This was something I investigated when making the choice between schools (as this is really important to me) and it seems the honest answer is yes, there are some students who are "cut-throat" and overly competitive. However, every school is going to have a group of students who are very competitive as that's the nature of academics, especially when specialties and residencies are potentially on the line. Maryland is no different, but after talking to a lot of students, I do feel that UMB has a bad reputation based on the reports of only a few students. While I interviewed I noticed all of the students were extremely friendly and confirmed that a majority of the students help each other out (sharing study guides, old exams, ect.) They were also extremely honest in regards to the questions asked, so I feel their opinion holds a lot of value.

That's just my two cents!

she didn't say anything about the waitlist to me when I got called for an interview

Lucky guys! I just submitted my secondary app tonight (along with a youtube video!). Wish me luck- I hope I get called for an interview soon.

Good luck everyone who is interviewing tomorrow! 🙂

Thanks Toofly and good luck to you as well! Will let you know how it is tomorrow night

Great news: I got the email this morning for an interview on 3/5.
Bad news: I'll be in the plane coming back from my UoP interview.
Worse news: 3/5 is the last day offered.

Hm...:help:
I was told to call back at the end of the week to see if alternate dates were available. But I don't think that will be the case, just a gut feeling. The last day is usually the last day.

I already booked my plane tickets/hotel for San Fran and I've been looking forward to UoP for about a month (well, actually several years). However, I absolutely love love love Maryland. Visited several times, did tours, have friends at UMD, love the city of Baltimore, and I have a ton of friends at Peabody too which is right down the road. I don't know what to do. I guess there really isn't a whole lot I can do. Any kinds words are much appreciated. I'll be sitting in a hotel room by myself tonight in Philly.

I just wished I had known the date was 3/5 so instead of spending so much time on the video/secondary for Maryland I could have been prepping for my UPenn interview which is tomorrow morning.

Okay sorry. Rant over.

Okay I'm catching a red-eye back from San Fran. I'm only an hour away from B-more and interview day doesn't start til 11:30am. Plenty of time!

Call me crazy. I love UMD!

So you're going? Kind of confusing?

I enjoyed the day though, the school is great, and all of the interviewers were very friendly. We had one 30 minute interview with 1 faculty member and 1 student. Think I might have a new #1!

Just got back home, U Maryland was quite impressive 😀 . It was nice meeting you today dk4ey.

Yes, I decided I will attend the interview. I changed my return flight from San Fran and I'm catching a red eye back home.

Glad it went well! Good luck!

I am lost! is this for School of Pharmacy or Dental school?

For those of you who interviewed this week, I am curious if they mentioned how many seats were still open. I have a couple of friends who are still waiting to hear back from UMB! Thanks

It has been over two weeks since my interview. Do you think my chances of getting admitted is slim at this point?

Nope they wouldn't give us any numbers but I wish they did! 🙁

Did they at least mention that there were seats?!?! When I interviewed a month ago, they told us to not worry and that plenty of seats were still open. I would have expected them to tell you at the end of the day at least. That sucks to leave you guys in anticipation and suspense.

They said that they were getting close to having to form a wait list but hadn't gotten there yet. So yes, there seems to be a few seats left.

That's good news at least! They seem to be extremely selective given the numbers they have accepted vs the numbers they have interviewed! I am extremely grateful now that I realize this and hope everyone hears some good news soon. It's nice to see people as excited about UMB as I am!

What do you mean the numbers they have accepted vs. the numbers they have interviewed? Have they interviewed a lot of people and not given out many acceptances?

Yeah I think I heard the number 450 for how many interviews they gave out and with 130 seats those numbers aren't terrible! And there were 15 of us being interviewed so I doubt they would be going through so many only for waitlist..... But we'll see
