***The Official USC Class of 2019 Interview/Acceptance Thread***

Accepted yesterday! Interviewed in November. Definitely a tough choice! (Houston is my other option at $140k for the whole four years...)

I hope you're being facetious because that isn't a tough decision at all to me....USC hands down 😉

(Just to be clear, I think you would be crazy to choose USC over Houston with that cost difference)

my opinion might be a bias since I have stakes at USC, but adding on a pre-interest 300k loan is just... questionable. I personally am all for choosing the better school and the best school you think you'd be happiest at, but 300k is definitely way too steep of a price. Especially since cost aside, Houston is a really solid school.

I personally totally agree with you guys. It is about a 3x price difference before even considering cost of living (which is also much higher in LA). However, my husband will be looking for a postdoc position in chemical engineering. So academically, LA has a lot more options in both quantity and quality to offer than Houston has. We will definitely have to have a solid, compelling reason to choose USC, but I did really like the school!

CONGRATS to all of you getting acceptances from Nov interviews!! 🙂 Looks like they have about an 8 week turnaround so I'm keeping my hopes high to hear by March!

I actually know a friend was going to attend NYU and a week before school was in session he got an Acceptance from SC, and hes a second year there now=]. I have my interview coming up on the 4th so hopefully I can get in too =]

Interviewed 2 weeks ago and here are my problems with USC, and I wanted to see what everyone thinks about it.

1) it is just waaaayyyy too expensive! And that is besides the crazy rent prices near the school (since if u don't live in a nice place in DownTown LA, you could get killed). I talked to some seniors and they all tell me that they are coming out with a balance of $530,000 !!! They all complained about how the costs just increase throughout the years. This is impossible to pay off considering all the interest added!!!!!! They tried convincing us by giving a financial presentation at the end of the interview day and that was by offering the program that takes off money from your pay checks! I did some research on that and no one recommends it as it has put people in a lot of trouble when it comes to taxes after forgiveness!

2) I hear that you really need to prepare on your own for the board exams and such! They teach you all the courses through the PBL cases and there are of course many gaps that you will need to fill up yourself if u wanna end up doing well or go for specialties. So I find that a little stressful throughout their program!!

Let me know what u guys think!

I think that it is definitely expensive and being from LA, I am familiar with the high cost of living. I think the pay-as-you-earn program that they presented is probably the best repayment option, but you would definitely have to save money to pay the taxes due at the time of forgiveness.

In terms of PBL, I enjoyed the process and thought the overall academic environment of USC was very low-stress and would be quite enjoyable. In terms of preparing for the boards, none of the students I spoke with on interview day seemed worried about passing board exams. However, they did mention that if you are interested in OMFS, you will have to do additional studying on your own to prepare for medical boards.

Other than that, I really enjoyed the overall experience I had at USC and think it is a great school. It is definitely non-conventional in it's method of instruction and you have to be sure you are the right fit for their program.

Dentito, where else have you interviewed at?

I agree with some of your points and Yes, the interview was a good experience. None of the students who see you during your interview break will say bad things about the school OR the program! I had the opportunity of talking to some of the students, days before the interview, and that was how I got to hear some of their honest opinions and complains about how expensive the school and living around there is. Yes the PBL is low stress, however it leaves many gaps in the material you are expected to know for boards and you should be filling those in by constantly figuring out what those gaps are and studying on your own.

I have done so much research on pay-as-you-earn and the 300-400 K tax that you need to pay after forgiveness has given many a hard time. It just sounds way to stressful to me! I'd prefer regular loans which you can pay little by little over a long period of time and prefer to save money for opening a private practice. Overall I find USC unnecessary expensive - it is the most expensive dental program if I'm not mistaking; and this is for an OK ranked school! I just have a hard time with going under that much loan for what USC offers.

I have interviewed at NYU, Western, Pitt, buffalo, and UCSF besides USC so far.

If you get into UCSF, go there!

Just got the call for an interview offer on Friday 2/6. Interview is next week Tuesday 2/17. Mailing date: 8/22/14. Good luck to everyone waiting for late interviews! There is still some hope!

Wait listed!!! they said half of the class is not full but they put me on the waitlist 2 days after the interview 🙁

this is normal... everyone is on automatically waitlist until they accept you. USC does this by round. dont panic until they send their next round (3rd).

usc don't send out enough acceptances to completely fill up their class so it is normal for them to have not filled their class yet

The PAYE program is sweet as! Think about it -- with a traditional loan of more than 500k you're going to be burdened with debt, forced to pay WAY more per month than the 10% of your income required with PAYE. I can lay out the numbers for you, but, trust me, you should be laughing at only having to pay 10% of your income to your student loans every month. With such small payments right out of school, you can actually afford to buy a practice (or house or car).

Of course, there's some discipline required because of the tax bomb. But it should be easy to deal with because you have such small monthly payments. Put away as much as you can every month into an investment account and in 20 years, you're golden. Especially if you invest that money judiciously. I'm just saying, PAYE relieves the high payments early in your career which is a very good thing!

Unfortunately, the schools know this and are able to jack their tuition up because of it. Who knows how high it will go before the PAYE program doesn't make sense. It's all a big experiment. Nobody has gone the full 20 years yet.

How do you know the class is full? Also i think they waitlist everyone right after the interview.

I remember someone on the interview day told me that.
I hope that's the case for everybody after the interview, because I'm still in doubt how they can select anyone based on the group interview. I will be really disappointed if I get rejected because of that.

Everyone is wait-listed after the interview. Just look on AADSAS and it should say wait-listed.

Just want to throw in my two cents:
I got an interview invite to USC on 1/30 and they only gave me two dates to choose from, 2/10 or 2/11. The interview process and curriculum is very different to what I've previously experienced. I don't think it's of a concern, it's just different. If you got an interview, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. I know USC is not the highest ranked dental school and I've been told their clinical experience and board prep isn't all that great, but if you really want them, you'll get them.

I personally liked the PBL curriculum, they said about 50%PBL, 50% lecture. They have the "selective" program that gives you all the clinical experience that you need and awesome if you're thinking about specializing. I think the USC program suits me well and would definitely strongly consider attending if I get in. But as many of you guys' concern, its $$$$$.

I personally believed our two student ambassadors were the most informative of the entire interview day. Both were second-years and were super helpful, upfront, and thorough in addressing my questions and concerns. To top it off, I got one of them again for the tour!

Good luck to everyone that got in, interviewed, waiting to interview, waiting for an interview, or just waiting. Do not lose hope.

PS. Congratulations to Dr. K.S.!

Received an interview and excited to attend! Any suggestions?

Has anyone who was interviewed late January/early February heard back from the school? Please share if you have 😉! It seems like they are really taking their time this year, which could be a good news! But sucks for people who have offers from other schools and deep down want to attend SC! My twin brother is dying to go to USC. Please share if you know when the next round of acceptance is, or if you were recently offered a position. Thx

I interviewed in late November and haven't heard back.

Do you mind sharing your major/DAT scores/GPA?
Biology Pre-Med
18AA 19PAT
sGPA 3.43 oGPA 3.56
I personally believe that my extracurricular activities is what makes my application stand out. I've worked at a dental office since 2008 (full time in the summer, part time during academic years). I'm the predental society president and a TA for gen bio I at my university. Outside of academics I am very involved in my local community. I am praying that I get in - I'd like to stay in CA which is my current residence, but I know my GPA and scores are average.

I pray you receive good news soon!

I interviewed on 1/13 and haven't heard back either. I believe next round of acceptances will be released in early March. I was dying to stay in CA also and currently live in LA but I interviewed at ASDOH last week and got an offer the same day! I am still curious to hear back from USC but I have already accepted the offer at ASDOH 🙂 To those of you waiting for acceptances, try not to stress too much about it! USC accepts A LOT of interviewees and if your interview went well, chances are you will most likely be accepted. Best of luck to you all!!

Early March Dentito. There's really nothing you can do speed up the process so you're worrying and stressing for nothing. Best thing to do right now is to relax and enjoy your time off (if any). But if I remember correctly, they sent out 50 offers on Deccember and 36 in March (plus however many people turned down offers in December....and remember, there are many who are holding seats that end up going elsewhere too). So basically they want to make sure 86 offers get out by March. I forget the other numbers in May-July until 144 is fully seated. Hope this helps. Good luck you, me, and everyone else!

Is USC still sending interview through March? your input is appreciated.

They told us they sent out less than 50 in December this year.

Congratulations to all who were accepted! Any advice for those of us on the waitlist? Did you guys wait patiently or constantly contact the school to check on your status and send updates after your interview?
