***The Official USC Class of 2020 Interview/Acceptance Thread***

Look, it's very helpful that you (and others) try to warn people about the cost of this school, but there are just so many posts bashing USC already. It's getting very old, and that's why people "ridicule" your post. I'm sure if a new applicant were to do a search on SDN about USC dental school, s/he would find plenty of "warnings."

My reasons for going to USC:
1. I want to live in LA
2. I didn't get into UCLA because my stats aren't competitive enough as OOS.
3. I'm not religious enough for Loma Linda.
4. I prefer USC over Western because of name recognition and location (closer to the city).
5. I can pay the tuition in cash

did you win a jackpot?! that's my fall back xD

Hey all! For the interview packet we have to fill out... I'm a little confused on two of the questions. What are they asking for when they want you to describe group learning experiences/independent study projects, and also the special interests? I feel like a lot of the questions are repeated and just worded differently lmao..

For the group learning experiences, I simply described a group project that I was involved. I described briefly what the project is what my role was, and also (very briefly) discussed about the outcome and how it helped me grow as a student,

Hope this helps 🙂

Hahahaha I repeated my answers so much in just different words soooooo yeah special interests I had so much trouble with that section
All I can say is be honest and do not afraid to put something different. They ask for special interest so just put something special and interesting.

Hope this helps 🙂

The HPSP is a great option but I've heard it's very competitive. In the event one is unable to snag a HPSP there are many other loan repayment/forgiveness options. I personally am leaning towards working in an underserved area/community that qualifies for loan foregivenss via the government after 10 years of full time work. There's also the PAYE program, NHSC, as well as Indian health etc. if you're flexible about where you practice such as rural areas with limited access to care there are plenty of options to repay/forgive loan debt. After all, isn't that why we all want to pursue careers as dentists? To help those in need? Win win in my book.

There are several things that applicants need to consider about:
1) Do you like the life style in military?( ̄O ̄)
2) HPSP makes you borrow TIME instead of money.
3)Be prepared for the paperwork you need to do......IT IS REALLY ALOT!!!! ( ╯#-_-)╯┴—┴ (Thank god, I rarely travel, or have unnecessary activities....I think I was able to skip about 20 pages of paperwork-estimated dont judge=)
4)I am jealous to everyone who is slim! 2 months of chicken breast+oat meal+ protein powder+low carb veg+ gym.....It could not help to reduce the weight, but was efficient for building a good shape....to pass the body fat %.
5)Additionally to #4 dont take protein powder 2 weeks before the physical test.... it may increase the protein lvl in your blood(heard from a guy who had PT on the same day with me)
6)After all of these, you just need an offer...My recruiter told me that if you have an offer, pass the PT, all files are fine, then HPSP mostly will get you in.
If 4 years program is full, they will try to get you in the 3 year one.

One last thing, apply EARLY!!! Not weeks!!! It should be MONTHS!!!
I contacted my local recruiter late, so her spots were full at that time. She referred me to another AMEDD recruiter who is 100 miles away from where I live... I had to drive back and forth about 4 times to complete my package....So apply EARLY! (ノ=Д=)ノ┻━┻
Hope those maybe helpful to anyone who is interesting in HPSP.
Wish GOOD LUCK to you guys, and to me, too.....

Is that from last year? Pacific time? :nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting:
Anxiety overload😕😕😕

That was from last wave of acceptance which was on 19th of February. It's been like 42 days since the last wave... :O

This is true I started in August and finally received an Army scholarship in February. Normally there are boards each month after December but it was so competitive this year that they filled every slot in the first board. Just make sure that you're dedicated and in constant contact with your recruiter!

Yeah I'm pretty sure that there will be another wave in May. Pretty bummed out that I didn't get an acceptance this wave but congrats to all those accepted.

Did anybody get a confirmation after emailing or faxing the waitlist info sheet?

Hoping this is not a April fool prank that USC is pulling lol

Did your status on the portal change as well? My status hasn't changed and no email yet 🙁
Yeah I'm curious to know if their AADSAS portal changed to "Offer Made" as well. Can anyone who got accepted kindly let us know if/ when it changed?

I was accepted around 5 today and interviewed in November! I'm pretty sure I will be turning it down because I already have my heart set on another school, good luck everyone! I'm almost positive there will be another round of acceptances so good luck to all of you!

Do you guys think that since April first was Friday, we might get some more acceptances next week?

I hate to be a conspiracy theorist but my inner Dana Scully is coming out.. Did you guys notice the aadsas portal said we can only access our application until May 1st? I wonder if this will have any bearing on the last wave or perhaps USC doesn't care about the aadsas deadline.. Hmmm :eyebrow:

People get in to schools past May 1st all the time. Don't worry about that deadline.

Hey Guys and Gals,
For anyone who is still waiting anxiously to hear back from USC, I wanted to let you know that I called this morning to see if the class was full. The gentleman I spoke to sounded really tired but said the class doesn't typically fill up until July. I asked if he knew what percentage of seats were still open and he said he didn't have any particular stats. Kinda vague answer but I was still relieved to not hear bad news. Keep your heads up! I wouldn't be surprised if there is another acceptance wave in May. Crossing my fingers.. Fight On! :nailbiting::xf::xf::xf:

Flossboss, Have you received an interview yet?

Yea I interviewed March 15. I was bummed not to hear anything from this past wave but still keeping my hope for the next one (hoping there is a next one lol) :xf:..
There will be more. They will send rejections once they filled all their seats

They will for sure send out another round and then pull seats off the wait list after that round... But they don't send rejections for people that were interviewed until September 1st (me last year haha)

At first I was thinking all loans. Now I'm thinking loans for the first year and then a 3 year HPSP scholarship for the remaining three years with the Air Force. Just a thought for now.

I'm also waiting for USC but I'm really reaally worried about the high cost of the school, how does the 3 year HPSP work?
while you work in the airforce for 3 years, does the 1st year you took out loans from continue to increase in interest? or is that forgiven too?

The scholarship has nothing to do with your first year, so yes interest will accrue. You're totally on your own for that year. It's too late to apply for the 4 year scholarship.

It's an 8 year contract with the airforce I believe. 3 years active and 5 years IRR (inactive ready reserve). But the clock starts your second year of school when the scholarship starts, so three inactive years will get burned while you are in school. Upon graduation, you'll have to serve 3 years active, as well as the remaining 2 IRR years after that.

And as mentioned before, it's really hard to get- it's a competitive program. You can also look into the navy and the army as well.

So I just found out our loans in grad aren't like loans in undergrad and they accumulate interest even when we're in school. Da Fuq....

..... yea I have friends who are D4 at USC right now and because of that accumulating interest they all have to pay around 510K+ by the time they graduate 🙁
I was hoping that USC would provide scholarships but when I called they said that they never give any and that we should apply for HPSP or NHSC.
