***The Official USC Class of 2020 Interview/Acceptance Thread***

For those of you that already committed to USC, can you explain your thoughts on all the criticism USC has received recently? (I'm not talking about the tuition, I'm talking about the actual program)
I know clinically, USC is a top school, but what's with all the criticism?
I'm asking those who plan on attending in fall 2016 because you guys obviously committed to the school despite these issues so there must be a good reason.
Thanks in advance!

i was thinking the same thing a while back
you pay for the most expensive dental school in the world, and you don't even get real lectures, you pay to learn by yourself
it is not a clinically top school.... who told you that? theres not enough chairs and not enough patients.
strange how they don't have enough chairs, but enroll 144 students anyway...... $$$$$$$

Anyone else want to share their thoughts/experiences? Preferably the, ones that are accepting their seat. Thanks again!

+1 trying to choose between USC and UOP right now and would like some insight as well

Aren't they similar if not the same in price? How is this even a dilemna...you only have 3 years of schooling at UOP meaning you get out sooner and make money sooner.

This shouldn't even be a question.... UoP 100%

How is this even a difficult decision?

UoP is better than USC in every single way, much better clinic, financially smarter due to 3 year program, less problems with chairs. The only reason to pay half a million dollars for USC is if you didn't get in anywhere else

I'd rather live in SoCal since I live down here. I went to undergrad up in NorCal and did not like it as much. There's plenty of factors to consider. the point you make is the most obvious that i have already considered

If it matters THAT much to you then it's obvious.....

....goto UOP

lol

but seriously, if it matters that much then why the dilemna. It seems you already made your decision based off location.

SoCal >>>> NorCal

if you don;t care about what is the better school or your future job prospects or how fast you will be able to pay off your loans
and only care about the short 4 years of dental school more than you care about the rest of your life, then yah go to USC if you're the type
that prefers short term pleasure over long term happiness.

It's not that I don't care about that.. I'm just saying that I have other factors to consider. I don't understand why that's a problem lol sorry I just realized I didn't wanna post the same thing twice so I gave you my short answer lol

well its pretty much summed up on here:

....nobody in their right mind is willing to attend USC because of the price tag alone, but if after factoring that in you have other reasons such as location
that are that important to you then go to USC, I'm just giving my advice that I would choose UoP over USC without question, good luck with your decision

wow thanks for quoting my post LOL

but yah I was also deciding if I should apply to USC but I realized it was "financial suicide" according to many SDN posters.

I just interviewed and they sent me a post interview follow up asking me to send them a form signed about continued interest. I'm confused, did i just get waitlisted?

If it's the post-interview contact form, that's normal. I got it after my interview even before acceptances started on Dec 1.
Also, everyone who interviews at USC gets waitlisted until accepted. I think everyone gets rejected later in the cycle when the class is filled.

Hmm, I interviewed about a week ago and did not get an email about post-interview contact. Should I contact USC about it?

I got mine almost a week after, so I would maybe wait until this Friday or next Monday. If you still haven't gotten it by then, I would shoot them a quick email asking since I'm under the impression that everyone gets this email post-interview

What hotel do you all recommend to stay at that is safe and not too far? The Radisson is fully booked for the night I need.

Wow congrats guys! Interesting time for USC to send acceptances. I wasn't expecting anyone to hear anything until around March or so.

Accepted Via Email today!! ~ 4:50pm
It must've been a very exciting afternoon for you! And it couldn't have happened on a better day. Friday with the entire weekend to celebrate!

Congrats on all your acceptances!

I thought acceptances were suppose to come out March 1'st as well... but maybe they're filling in some seats that overflowed from the prior waves (56 seats first wave on Dec 1 and 30 seats Feb 1). Some of these seats didn't, I'm sure, so they may be trying to fill them up!

Got an acceptance email today as well!!! Thank you to everyone on sdn for the guidance and advice. You all helped me keep my sanity. This is my first acceptance and it feels great. For all of you who are accepted, congrats! For all of you still waiting, stay hopeful! Can't believe I am going to be a dentist!!!!!:soexcited:

What school are you going to pick?

I loved (x3) my undergrad experience at SC and would love to continue with dental school there, but I'm struggling with the price tag.

Right now I'm going back and forth between Iowa and UCLA.

Totally. I can't agree more. Why between ucla and Iowa?

My interview experience at Iowa was absolutely amazing, and they have an excellent clinical program. Ucla is about $80,000 cheaper overall, though.

Regardless, Trojan at heart, tried and true. #fighton forever. 😛

Anyone else interviewing next Tues 2/23? I'll be in town for the JJ Lin concert on Sunday, then prepping for the interview 😀

Hi there, I totally understand your concern, as it is a concern of mine. However, I have spoken to many students (other than the dental ambassadors) from the school and most of them say that there have been many positive changes in the curriculum. They listen to their students concerns, and it's definitely on the upswing. Of course, I have no idea about the validity of all of this. And yes, I believe they prepare their students to be excellent clinicians because of the exposure they're given during all four years. I've committed here because 1, it's the only place I've been accepted, but don't mistake that with the idea that I would have gone anywhere else had I gotten in (for it's cheaper tuition). This place really was my first choice. At the end of the day - at any institution, you get out of it what you put into it. While some may think it's "financial suicide" I've met many students that find the debt manageable - calling it suicide is a bit overdramatic. Just my two cents. 🙂 I just wanna be a dentist dang it! Haha.

pretty much lost all hope by now, interviewed in november and no word 🙁
Don't lose hope! I interviewed on the second day back in October and my status was updated to waitlisted on AADSAS mobile in December. My friends and I (also wait listed, interviewed October) all got off the waitlist today.

so u wont go to any other school, with equal clinical experience, for 140-150k$ less even if you are offered admission

does this joke fly over my head or something?

people will drop usc unless

1. it is the only school he/she can become a dentist with

2. no number 2

if over 500k$ debt is on you before u even earn a dime and this is not financial suicide, then probably not

I can't really answer that question because 1, it is the only school I've received acceptance so far, and 2, it was/is my #1 choice. Every person is looking for a specific thing in other schools. We're really in no position to assume why someone chooses the school they do. Some people don't financial problems, others may just not care, and some would do as you said - choose the cheaper school. If you manage your expenses well, you can lessen $500K considerably. Besides, her question wasn't about tuition - it was about why people chose it despite the criticism. Good luck!

USC has 400-420k$ fixed cost and if u live on ramen for 12k a year then ull still be in 464k$ in a hole
yes others may not care now because this is the only school for them to legally hold a drill

even the usc fin aid rep told the interviewees to go somewhere else and the government give schools blank check thus this happens

I see. I'm sure I'll live. Well good luck to you at UNLV.

im sorry. my posts are not pointed at you. im sure you will do well at usc. however, for the insane tuition and fee they charge they:

1. dont have one single dentist during interview day because of short of staff

2. people in pbl sessions on interview day are just regular admin and have no dental background

3. big bucks for self learning didactic.

4. enrollment of everyone in irb/paye except military scholarship and rich parents

5. presentation given on interview day focused too much on the name of the school, connections, and its rivalry in football. no one gives a crap honestly

6. their own people fin aid rep and he tells people about how staffs at this school think the price is unreal
thats all

I loved what the USC financial aid coordinator said during interviews.... "At the 20 year mark you can refinance on your home to pay off the taxes on your debt"... I couldn't believe that is what they were seriously recommending. It's not paying off the debt at all.. it's simply shifting it from dental school to your home...

yes..... the USC financial aid rep literally told us that we cannot pay off the massive tuition of USC...... they don't even try to hide the fact that USC grads will be in debt forever.
half a million dollars in debt before even considering interest is not ever manageable and 100% is financial suicide.

one thing i love about usc, i love that financial aid guy at usc. im not sure how long he will able to keep his job after the school finds out his words have much effect on prospective students. he looks pretty old so I guess he is near retirement and doesnt care

his excel sheet of multiple repayment methods, on year by year basis, with estimated income and estimated debtload really kicked the sense of debt into me. before this, it wad just a number to me

he also suggested asking dental town and practicing dentists and quote :"they will faint into coma when they know the debt you guys take on." i even ask what happens to my debt after i die, he says government collects retirement, 401k and house and liquidate everything to pay for that
i am really thankful for that guy

i loved when he said that we have 2 options

1) be in debt forever
2) die and have your debt forgiven

.... had me running away from USC as fast as I could

even if u die, they split ur property and assets from ur family's share and pay debt with that

come on, are you going to die at age 50? assuming h complete dental school at age 30 and 20 year after irb and paye. but it sucks
