Just as their is a "correct" answer to those "what's your greatest flaw" quetions, there must be a preferred answer for the academic dishonesty questions. So, what is the best way to answer moral/ethical academic dishonesty questions like this one: "What would you do in <insert academic dishonesty> this situation? (Cheating on test, getting in without having a pre-req done, etc)"

If I were being 100% honest, in a real-life situation I would do nothing. The person that's cheating is screwing themselves over in the long run. What is my saying something about it to academic authorities really going to accomplish? I'm sure we've all known someone who cheats and have said nothing. Somehow, though, I feel like this is the wrong answer to provide.

I don't think I could sit by and do nothing...I would feel guilty.

When someone is academically dishonest not only are they screwing themselves but they are also destroying the reputation of the school. If they end up graduating and get by with whatever academic honesty they were doing and then end up practicing they may also end up providing poor dental care for their patients.

No offense meant, but I think that you should put more personal effort into coming up with an answer to this question rather than asking SDNers and looking for the cookie cutter answer.

I got a question about this regarding cheating. I answered that I would talk to the person in private and ask them to "turn themselves in." If they didn't, then I would tell a professor whoever would be the first person to go to about the situation with minimal details.

My interviewer said he liked my answer, but I'm sure others may not.

They are giving you a real life situation but reworded it to the applicants level of education. If you are a dentist and see another dentist carrying out unethical and illegal practices what would you do?
Doing nothing is not acceptable.

You stated that they are screwing themselves. They are NOT harming themselves but they are endangering the patients and you have to keep in mind ultimately what is in the best interest of the patient.

Did that help?
