I'm going to apply to the following schools:

1.) Drake
2.) Albany
3.) Butler
4.) Southern Nevada

I may apply to one more or one less though, but I'm not sure. I don't live in the state where any of these schools are, but from the statistics I've seen, each of these accepts a lot of out-of-state applicants.

I currently have around a 3.3 - 3.4 GPA. I haven't taken the PCAT yet, but not all of these schools require it.

Does anyone have any info on how hard it may be to get into the ones I've chosen?

Thanks

Butler DOES require the PCAT. You'd need to apply throught PharmCAS and to even start to be competitive with the others students who have applied to Butler though PharmCAS you would need a MINIMUM GPA of 3.5 and a PCAT in the 80-90 range. Most of Butler's students do live in Indiana. Since Butler does have an auto-advancement program in place they are only mandated to accept a very limited number of students into the P1 class. If you have questions you can e-mail me at jegel AT butler DOT edu.

RLK, just keep in mind Butler is very hard school to get into out of state. It's not impossible, but I know someone who got accepted by both the University of Kentucky and Cincinatti, but not Butler. Also, consider applying to every school in Pennsylvania. Being an in state student is a very important advantage.

Yeah maybe that's the thing for me to do. I really don't know where to apply to. I want to get accepted somewhere though. Maybe you have a good idea there about applying to schools in PA mainly. I'm really not concerned what school I go to as long as I can get the education. Thanks for the advice.

Just curious, to how many optometry schools are you applying?

3 optometry schools, 5 pharmacy schools it looks like. There's nothing wrong with being interested in both careers is there? The more I work at the pharmacy, the more I seem to like it.

Sometimes I say things here that are I guess offensive in a way, but it's not that I'm trying to be an a-hole. I'm just more or less working things out in my head, but typing them here. I guess I'm a little weird. Oh well. 🙂

i know from experience that if you type or talk for long enough something ill-thought-out is bound to emerge into the public domain.

you're not offensive

What??? You're applying for Optometry too?? I was in the same situation as you. I thought of Optometry as a backup because if I didnt get into any school, I think my dad would be sooooooooooooo mad. I was so depressed because I didn't know what I wanted to do. PRESSURE everywhere. The more I thought about it, the more I decided that it was not worth it. I can't even whip up 3 LOR's, let alone 6. I dont even have enough time for PCAT, I can't study for OAT also. I would not be able to do well on the interview for Optometry because I know absolutely nothing about it and I just don't feel it. I've worked in the hospital pharmacy and I've taken undergrad pharmacy courses and I've also done research for a year under a pharmacology prof. that there are just so much I can talk about. As for optometry, I have nothing. If I dont get in this year, I will just reapply next year. No other way around it.

I really don't know what you would say at the interviews.

One thing though about the OAT vs. PCAT. I know exactly what subjects are tested on the OAT. I'm not as familiar with the PCAT, but they look pretty similar. The OAT tests chemistry, organic chemistry, reading comp, qr, physics, and bio. I could have missed something. I don't think the PCAT tests physics though, but the other subjects are pretty similar. So if you studied for one, it would be like studying for the other.
Which pharmacy schools are you applying to?

I'm planning to apply to the 3-year program schools in the East Coast and some 4 year-year dual program.
Lecom, Albany, South University, Cincinnati, Kentucky (the program is good, but I dont like the hilly city, I dont think I will apply here), Maryland, and maybe some more schools around here, but I need to look at their pre-req. first and what they require. When they accept me, then I will look at their tuition 🙂 My first choice would be Lecom.

Lexington is hilly?

I've never been in Lexington, but I was at the border of Cincinnati, Ohio and Kentucky and it was sooooooo hilly. It was like 45 degree angle. I know a few people from Kentucky and they all told me that Kentucky is even more hilly than cincinnati. I'm gonna go check it out myself, but when I was there, I didn't like what I saw.

I don't think Lexington is very hilly. Not compared to other parts of Kentucky, like the App Mts. in the east. Kentucky is pretty diverse, geographically. I think Lexington's an OK city, but I like Louisville better. Too bad we don't have a pharmacy school.

If you are out of state, it is very difficult to get into the UK pharmacy program. Probably fewer than 10% of the class is non-Kentuckians.

I printed out a table that lists each pharmacy school and statistics about each from the AACP website. Albany's applicant to enrollment ratio for 2004 was 30 to 1. Most other schools are between 2 and 11 to 1. 30 to 1 isn't real encouraging.

Wow...thanks for the info. I knew it was high, but I didn't realize it was THAT high. I guess because it's too easy to apply. Do you know anything about average GPA?
