I'm not familiar with the laws of all 50 states of course. :) In the places I've lived however, the requirements are pretty straightforward. Schedule II - V drugs need to be inventoried and secured. There are requirements for destruction of expired inventory. I personally think you'd have to be crazy to go down that road as an individual physician, I mean who wants the risk, the paperwork, and the hassle? But it's legal. Some states have rules for Schedule VI drugs which are rx drugs not on the DEA schedules I - V.

Any drug that is used, there needs to be a written medical record and written prescription. A documented appropriate H&P is implied for any legit medical encounter. Most state medical boards have things to say about self-prescription or prescription to family members, and I think all of us would probably agree this is generally a bad idea under most circumstances. However every state I've ever lived in had specific exceptions (even to Schedule II drugs!) for emergencies or "imminent need" and those statutes were pretty vague. Documentation after the fact is still required.

Licensed physicians should have broad latitude in their practice of medicine, and for the most part they do. I have stronger personal opinions about all this, given my political leanings. If I was God Emperor of the USA, right after disbanding the ATF the second agency I'd get rid of would be the DEA. But I digress.

Jokes on you guys. I've had several different hydrochloroquine medications (and similar meds) in my cabinet for years as we use them for saltwater fish treatment in reefkeeping. Maybe I should put them on Craigslist so people can treat themselves, err, their expensive fish before placing them in the display tank.

Maybe you’re right. But what role does CDC and FDA play then? Why didn’t we take the WHO tests? Where are the tests? Why is turnaround time so slow? Why is Tom Hanks and the NBA able to get tested but healthcare workers can’t?

I’m upset. Trump is one person. He has a whole administration. There are multiple agencies in government. Who messed up and is still messing up?

our government is incompetent. this crisis only proves it. its just like in most hospitals. administration is incompetent or has completely different focus than what doctors/front line workers think is important.

I don't necessarily disagree with your premise but Trump refuses to own this crisis. He loved taking credit for the market, now he needs to take his lumps and quit being a whiny baby about it.

Part of it is that we’ve become obsessed with the stock market to the point of pathology. The markers of a successful presidency is if the stock market goes up. This obsession causes us to turn a blind eye to important things like public health and emergency preparedness. The same goes for our hospital administrators. Things are great when the ORs are pumping out cases and they are building new ortho wings, but in the face of a national health emergency they are falling like a house of cards.

No.... he has never had a “whole” administration/cabinet .... even once in the entire time he has been in office. Fires people constantly (by tweet) and fills positions with “acting” so they don’t have to be vetted... revolving door constantly. He surrounds himself with people that tell him what he wants to hear rather than what he needs to hear.
He is a racist game show host and a petty liar and is so out of his league. Somehow I think the email lady would not have disbanded the pandemic team in 2018.

Just have your family doc, internist or buddy write an Rx for some Plaquenil. If TELEDOC can do it so can you. $16/ $30? Why wouldn't you have some available like I do "just in case" you develop a fever and a cough. Plaquenil for just 5 days may shorten the severity and the duration of Covid 19. I'm getting some Z-Packs as well. This is no time to let hubris/arrogance or even stupidity get in the way of a high probability drug to treat Covid 19.

I'm older than PGG and I'll need the boost to avoid the ICU.

If I had his briefings I would have dumped a lot of stock so this is indeed using insider information to keep one's portfolio in check. Now, he can start buying the stock back for a lot less.

Since this is an economic thread, would totally recommend SOXS, SQQQ, SDOW as the market tanks, all 3x bear market ETF, overall up 212% since the market started to go the hell. I truly believe this is just the beginning.

I just did myself. Got 30 pills from local pharmacy. They only have 90pills. Pharmacist was aware and cool with it.

I prescribed for my family in the past, mainly abx. Never had problems.

All I read is that this practice is discouraged but not illegal. Just don't do it often.

I didn't elect him. And I will not reelect him either. But I can totally see how he makes us look as a nation. Every time he opens his mouth, especially abroad, I cringe. You have to realize he was elected by less than 30% of adult Americans (62MM out of 250MM).

Btw, this is the PERFECT example of how many doctors see trial results, too, at population-level, without skepticism. What may apply to most of the group (I say "may", because most studies are worthless statistically), may not apply to the individual members (and many times, I see the latter in the ICU). And this is why many good intensivists are also very skeptical about studies.

i hope this situation also serves as a wakeup call to doctors everywhere in the country . we desperately need strong representation and unions to support us. people write articles about feeling like being in a warzone, well i actually think that's a great analogy because as far as i am aware, doctors are almost like soldiers. minimal rights/power/voice. this country has other emergency personnels such as police/firefighter but they have way more voice and power than we do.

If that article is right, this is coming from the White House.

Basically Trump would work us literally to death, rather than risk losing the elections because of his catastrophic mismanagement. This is again because they don't have enough and proper PPE, so they KNOW that doctors WILL get sick.

The White House advocated for the carve-outs for medical workers during negotiations with congressional Democrats, according to two Democratic aides and advocates aligned with Democrats tracking the issue with the Paid Leave for All campaign.

A White House spokesperson did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
