@SuperMax

Check out VCU's post-bacc program. Their GPA requirement is 2.75, but look into it soon, I think the deadline to apply is July 1. (Not a 100% sure on the date)

Well my transcript got confirmed at a 2.97 cGPA this past week and now I'm officially a member of the Sub 3.0 Club! Whoo hoo! I actually thought it was going to be a lot lower so I was happy with it. DAT scores are 20/19/24 and AADSAS is 100% done, so time to just sit back and play the waiting game...

Hi all!
I’m pretty new to this site… so bare with me if I ask dumb questions, or questions that have been asked a million times over!
First off, congratulations to all who have been accepted to dental school!
Second, to those who have been accepted, what are your stats? (DAT – AA and PAT scores? GPA? Community service hours? Awards? Etc.)
It’s well-known that if you have a GPA in the 3.0 range… the other parts of your application play important roles. I’m curious to see what makes you guys unique! The schools obviously saw something great in your application!
Thanks!

Im pretty curious too about the other stats.
so bumpy bumpy

go to predents.com... the stats are pretty biased but you can get a little bit of an idea, look at previous years and stuf....

dont let them discourage you tho, i think people lie a bit and people with better stats tend to want to show it off more

Hello everyone,

I need some advice on my current situation. I am going into my 4th year with:
Science gpa: 2.7
cGpa: 3.1
Non-science: 3.5

I will be writing the DAT in november.
My science gpa is low, do I have a chance gpa wise?
I can max. pull the science gpa upto maybe 2.9, but cgpa will go up more. Any suggestions how to handle this.

Thank you.

I was in a similar position when i graduated (although my non-science was lower). A lot of it is going to depend on your extracurriculars and your DAT score, although even with a high DAT score, it is going to be difficult in your position. You may want to consider doing a masters, post-bacc, or just taking additional courses. Another factor is if there is any sort of trend, like a terrible first year followed by 3 years of solid grades (trend of improvement). I'm currently in the process of taking additional courses and I unfortunately have to retake the DAT because my scores have expired, but if it is really something you want to do, you'll eventually get there.

Make sure you read through the rest of this thread, there are plenty of people in your position and while the overarching message from others tends to be the same, reading positive comments from people over and over really helps you get the sense that it is possible.

Thank you dctim211. I was hoping I can get atleast 1-2 interviews at canadian-friendly dental schools next year. I guess its not possible then :(

Does anyone know of people who got in with a gpa similar to mine without doing a post-bach?

What is considered as a good min. science gpa for US schools that accept canadian DAT?

Any help is appreciated.!

I got in Luckily.. my stats and everything can be found on Predent from last year. It can be done, but its not easy!

Hey bizznet,

If you dont mind me asking:

1) What was your cgpa and science gpa?
2) Did you apply or enrol in any masters?
3) What type of ECs did you have?
4) Are you a Canadian?

Thank you.

So I guess I qualify for the club...My cGPA is sitting at 3.11, but my overall science is sitting at 2.96. Stupid math classes in my undergrad killed my science because my bcp is sitting at 3.28. I'm definitely a non-trad as I have a BA in Lib Arts and didn't decide I wanted to go into dentistry until late senior year. I went straight from my degree into an informal post-bacc program at SFSU which in hindsight was a mistake because about halfway through I got overwhelmed and burned out....blah

I ended up taking a year off, came back and pulled around a 3.5 from that point on and so fortunately I have a nice upward trend in GPA. My DAT was also encouraging, I pulled a 21 TS 21 AA and 22 PAT, and my lowest section was a 19 in QR. Of course I'm hoping that another round of upper division bio courses in a post bacc this fall coupled with all of my most recent work will be enough to get me some interviews. It's definitely nice to hear success stories as it keeps you from getting too negative towards your chances. Keep it up people!

I'd like to know how you guys made a compelling case during the interviews about your bad grades in undergrad? Part of mine was that I had no motivation, I realized too late that I chose the wrong major. I don't know how to make this compelling in the personal statement or the interview. Thanks!

DDMess, if you don't mind me asking, how were your stats?

I'm in the pretty much in the same boat at you, dental88. I'm a Canadian too :)

I'd like to know the answers to those questions too.

I just submitted my application and got the ADEA AADSAS GPA.
I knew my gpa wouldn't be high considering I got 3.2 on my postbacc classes but when they added up those postbacc sci gpa with my undergrad sci gpa, it dropped dramatically down to 2.5. This is very low and I'm not even sure if I'm even eligible to apply anymore.

I know that schools look at upper trends but will they apply to me as well? I'm not even sure if they are going to have a second look at mine since the gpa is too low.

I have been working full time for three years while taking post bacc classes. I've also been volunteering at a dental practice for about six months now.

I have yet to take DAT and am planning on taking in September.

Help anyone?

I am unsure whether I should apply this cycle. I'm a third year at UC Berkeley, and I have a terrible GPA. I'm currently looking at at 3.2 cGPA, 2.95 sGPA. Some points about me: Worked at my dad's dental office for about five summers now as assitant, sporadic shadowing with specialists, dental clinic in Nicaragua, pre-dental society officer in charge of coordinating dental outreach to local elementary school children, AA 23 TS 21 PAT 26 (29 in Math really helped cover the 18 in OChem), and volunteered for a year at a general hospital (when I was still pre-med). I'm considering taking a year off to raise my sGPA by taking five sciences this semester, but that one year is very costly (plus my older brother is entering dental school this fall, and my little brother is in his second year in 6-year dental program at UOP, so I'm behind them both). Help??:scared:

I don't think you have a terrible GPA, and since you said you are a third year, you still have 4 more semesters to go. Take more science classes to help raise your science GPA, and you should definitely apply next cycle. It seems like you're pressured to get into dental school, but just concentrate on your grades for right now since that's your main concern.

Well folks, I have good news for sub-3.0 applicants. I got my first interview invite to Midwestern, scheduled for October 6th. My stats are in my predents link. Keep your heads up

Congrats to the above!

This is my first post... I'm currently applying for the 2010 cycle. I've been reading other people's situations and a lot of it mirrors mine.

I haven't had my GPA verified yet, byt my cumulative is around a 3.2 and science should be at about 3 (I got a C in one of my ochem courses and a C+ in one of my biology courses which really brought down my science).

I sent 2 years at a CC before transferring to UCLA, where I took most of my science pre-reqs. I am a psychology major. Because of unit restrictions, I've been forced to take the physics pre-req elsewhere. I took 1 semester last summer and am taking the next semester this fall, but I'm sending in my application before taking the course.

I'm getting everything together... all my transcripts should be in by this week. I have 4 LoE's (1 from the dentist I've been shadowing, 1 from a dental technician that I've been shadowing, 1 from a science professor-ironically enough, from the bio course i got a C+ in, but I've served under him in a public health internship, and 1 from a math professor that ran the scholars program i was in while attending my CC) and my personal statement is almost finalized.

Extracurriculars: WORK (full-time, almost 40 hrs a week for the last 5 years to help pay for tuition.. definitely pointing this out on the app), Public health internship, hospital volunteer work (100 hrs), dentist shadow (50 hrs), dental lab volunteer (50 hrs), 3-4 clubs.

I'm taking the DAT sept 3rd and am hoping for 20+'s across the board. My app should be submitted by Aug 31st and the DAT scores will be sent shortly thereafter.

Considering all of this (sorry, I know that was seriously a mouthful), do you think it will be worth it to apply this cycle or am I wasting my time/money?

Thanks in advance.. this board is great.

I honestly believe that if you have a decent DAT score, around 3.0 GPA (provided you 're not applying to Harvard etc..), and a passion for dentistry that you'll be able to get in; maybe not the first time but with a little persistence and perseverance no prob! This of course applies to the more expensive American schools. In Canada if you have lower than a 3.7 good luck to you; and yet I'm still applying to 5 Canadian schools (we can dream right?).

I've been using Ontario Medical School Application Service (OMSAS) to convert my grades to GPA, does anyone know if that will fly with the American schools?

Fellow sub-3.0ers, I just got an interview at Pacific. There is hope!

hey gbrando...if you dont mind me asking...how did they notify you of an invite? phone, email, or snail mail? thanks!

Gbrando2 what are you DAT scores? Extras?
Thanks for the encouragement!

UoP was a phone call.

DAT scores were 20/19/24 (my predents link has all of them) and extra-currics were nothing special, just work full-time my whole undergrad and a little bit of volunteering and about 55 hours of shadowing.

Are there any sub 3.0s who have applied to Marquette and got accepted? I would like to attend Marquette but I am right around 3.0 and will apply next cycle and just wondered.

There is someone on the forum that is starting at Marquette with a 3.04 and said a few people in his class have lower GPAs than him. Check out the "applied to 30+ schools thread", I know he posted in there.

per Brian Trecek, Director of Admissions, Marquette is known for evaluating
complete package and giving a applicant a chance when they feel it is strong case.
I found Marquette to be amazing school. It is more power to them for looking deeper than numbers. Few friends I know who goes to Marquette are really happy there.

I agree KitKat09... I met with Brian at the end of July and was able to tour Marquette: great school!

keep your heads up...

after 3 years of applying, i finally learned my lesson. I went back to school as a post-bac, retook my freshly expired DAT, wrote an inspirational essay, and I have my first interview (NOVA). Crossin my fingers for more good news to come

I need general advice from anyone who can help
My situation is complicated but I'm still dreaming big :S , My goal is to get into dental school. I decided to be a dentist in my 4rth year .. I just finished my undergrad in biological sciences and my gpa is cum 6.05/13 and major 5.8/13. I had mostly B's, C's and D's :S. I guess it comes out to be 2.5/4 or lower :S . I still decided to write my canadian DAT ended up getting a 15/30. Dont blame the score, I just wasn't prepared. It was an unexpected decision and I don't have any regrets on it
My next step is what I'm concerned about ... I was thinking of going back to the university and retaking my courses just to upgrade. Or go into B.Ed. I did try college programs but they were all full and I can't waste another year just waiting. I am extremely confused, tried going to my academic advisor but he let me down too. how are postbacc programs.. my university offers a masters program and with my sucky gpa .. i dont think i ll get in.... I am serious about studying ahead I am just confused what could get me a successful career
Please help me out !!
P.S. I am a canadian student and I went to a canadian university.. and they make dental school impossible here..

i love this group .. i dont feel alone and discouraged :S .. whoever came up with it .. thanks

Hey guys. I got into dental school with a 2.99 sci GPA, so keep the faith!

Yah! I saw your posting in regards to an upcoming interview! That's great.

I checked out your stats on PreDents. Your PAT/RC score are pretty high! What would you say is your unique quality that caught UoP's attention?... (High scores? Intriguing Personal Statement? Lot's of Community Service? ... Etc.)

Honestly, I have no idea. I had a couple of high DAT sections, my personal statement was great (I think, at least) and I used it to try to explain why I was on academic probation Freshman year and had a sub-1.0 GPA that year (although I didn't give an excuse because I didn't have one, just lazy), but I don't think either of those are astonishing. Extra-curriculars were just average- about 55 hours of shadowing and some standard volunteer work and working full-time all through my undergrad. Wish I could help more but that UoP interview phone call was a huge shock even to me.

Hey everyone! I am kinda in this group too. I have 2.94 sgpa, 3.35 gpa, and 19AA and 20TS. No masters, in the process of a bachelors and I just got an invite for an interview to Boston University. :woot: I thought there was no way that this was even plausible. I think the major thing that put me through this was my faith. So, my word to everyone is if you have faith and believe, you could be anything!

any of u guys get into Maryland?

i have a 2.8 overall right now, and 2.1 science gpa. if i take 30 science credits, ill be looking at ~3.0 overall gpa and 2.8 science gpa. do you guys think i got a shot at maryland? that in-state residency tuition is amazing! 70k vs. 200k (minus living/other expenses).

sorry, close to 0%

what would I need to do in order to improve those chances then?

How can you be so sure?! are you in Maryland admission committee?
It seems you're implying Maryland will take low-caliber students with a C average for science courses, or that you know better than hamburger to give such advice. Having a sub 3.0 sci gpa won't open a lot of doors. I should know, since I got rejected from A LOT of schools. At the very least, wasvsdal shouldn't have their heart set on one school, and take what comes to him/her.

Danny, thank you for the encouragement. I appreciate it!

Peter, Maryland would be the most cost-effective option for me. It is well ranked, and likewise it would be my primary choice. I am in no position to have that at this point, and I understand that. Also, I dont plan on limiting myself to Maryland, and plan on applying to other schools as well -- just would be really nice if I got into Maryland. Likewise, I asked how I could improve my chances significantly (i.e. 0% to like 60-70% if possible).
