So I just took the DAT today. I didn't knock it out of the park, but I'm pretty happy with it.

I'm submitting my application tomorrow (late!) to 15 schools. I'm from Alaska so I'm applying to private schools (e.g. ASDOH, MWU, USC, Tufts, LECOM, Roseman, etc.). What do you think? Do I have a shot?

Any recommendations on easiest dental schools to get into?
Its not easy to get into any dental school. Generally your state school(s) and private schools are easier to get into than out of state public schools.

I'd add the WICHE schools also: http://www.wiche.edu/psep/dent

Your DAT, sGPA, and bcpGPA are good, but the cGPA may limit you. Be sure to continue to take classes this year to improve your overall GPA just in case. Good luck! Keep us posted on your progress.

I just got an interview for BU last week.

DAMN thats NICE! Good Luck and let us know if you get anymore interviews

Sorry if you've already posted them somewhere already, but do you mind sharing some more stats? Did you do a post-bacc? When was your BU app complete? Any special considerations on your app (URM, etc)? Thanks!

I think that you'd have a good shot but submitting your app late might have hurt you. I started with a low GPA and brought it up to 3.0+ over the past few years. The great thing is that you have a very high bcp and sGPA. The ECs should definitely help too. Good luck!

Shocking but happy for you 😀 I was rejected by them last cycle with little better stats.

Has any one been getting any interviews that have similar stats?
Or does any one know any body that has got in to dental schools with similar stats in previous cycles? I am bit worried. Please comment.

I am also taking some Post bacc classes to raise my science GPA.
I also have a lot of ECC.
PLEASE HELP!!!

Rejected: Nova, Indiana, UNLV 🙁, LLU 🙁

SN1- thanks. yeah totally surprised. hopefully i can land some more.
GoBucks32- no post bac. Currently senior at private college in California. I completed the secondary on Aug 20th and got an email for interview on Aug 28th. Its funny because i am actually retaking the DAT and called the day before i got the interview invitation asking them to hold my application for new scores. but they told me that they couldnt do that. I was just as shocked as everyone probably is. haha. and i am an URM.

Also, I applied to 11 schools but have only heard from BU.

This, is probably one of the biggest reasons you got an interview in 8 days, and with late submission.

GJ though 👍

Waiting on my BU interview, hoping it will come eventually.

So if my stats are

Sci GPA: 3.21
BCP GPA: 3.29
Overall GPA: 3.14
Strong upward trend (3.9 last 2 years)

DAT 23/24/21

I have a pretty good chance to get in if I'm a URM? (Not being rude, just curious)

yes

Seems pretty solid man - just dont get cocky - apply to plenty of schools that are reasonable considering your dat, gpa, place of residence, etc.

I've posted my stats on here before, but AADSAS just posted my calculated GPA last night and I'm pretty stoked about it:

cGPA: 2.94 (sucks but no surprise there. good upward trend)
sGPA: 3.68 (This what is awesome because it is better than I expected 😍)
bcpGPA: 3.70

DAT: 20 AA / 19 TS / 22 PAT

B.A. History May 2012
Finished GenChem, Ochem (lecture), physics
Taking OChem lab, Biochem, Microbio, A&P, Dental Anatomy
Over 4000 hrs community service (over 75 at a community health center dental clinic)
Over 100 hrs shadowing
EMT
Pilot
Military

I'm from Alaska (no state school) and since my cGPA sucks and I applied so late I applied to 26 schools (ASDOH, LECOM, Roseman, Midwesterns, USC, etc.) . Hopefully it mails soon! I just hope my DAT, EC's and science GPA's can compensate for my crappy cGPA. :xf: I doubt I'll get any interviews before the semester is over, since I applied so late. If I pull straight A's this semester it should bring my cGPA up to 3.0 🙂 when I update my application. Will ADCOMS use this updated cGPA incorporating this semester? Are dental schools willing to schedule interviews around military duty (overseas)? If I don't get in this cycle I am going to keep to taking classes. Is it better to just graduate and do an unofficial post-bacc or delay graduation and double major biology? I hope to get in this cycle, but I'm in it for the long haul! 😉

Hey - not that I am in any position to really tell you why you haven't gotten interviews, I haven't gotten interviews yet either. I had a late submission date (i submitted way back - than retook my DAT sept 2nd...)... Anyways I talked to a lot of admissions committees because I am in the sub 3.0 boat haha i have a 3.12 overall, 2.88 scgpa, 3.45 conscience --> anyways spoke to Tufts, UofP, NYU, all advised retaking the DAT b/c when you don't have the science gpa you need to compensate with the rest of your app. AA - 18 TS-19, you need to bring it up into the 20+ range as compensation. Especially since each cycle is getting more and more competitive....I'd say if you can do it, re-take it. Keep up the good work w postbox. I retook it sept 2nd (feb 24th scores AA:19 TS:19 PAT:19) - than my retake .... TS:21 AA:22 PAT:24. Haven't gotten interviews yet, well see and ill update you, but I also got my app in sorta late!

Thanks for the reply, I def. want to retake my DATs over, but i think it's to late for this cycle unfortunately. Well see what happens I guess. I too will keep you posted if i get any interviews. Hopefully it will all work out this year. Good luck with everything.

Yea def keep me posted! We're similar applicants on the GPA front...where did you apply? For some schools it might not be too late, sometimes they'll even email you and ask you to re-take it but regardless good luck!

Based on your DAT scores alone you should be getting quite a few interviews. Keep us all posted as to how things are going!

Got an interview to Tufts! 3.2~overall 2.89 scgpa ...not a URM, though I did go to Tufts. However, they told me my gpa wasn't competitive enough and that I needed to get a 20+ on the DAT and I did, I've taken extra courses last year got a 4.0 (more science courses) and have been working in a dental office student internship. Worked extra hard to prove my potential 🙂 and to show that this was a maturing process for me. Also extremely important to build relationships with people at the dental school of your top choice etc

quick question, who would i specifically contact at each dental school? every time i tried to email admissions board members, they just told me to take some upper level science classes but didn't really give me a response pertaining to my specific situation. I wish i knew who to contact directly =/

my top choices are umb, umdnj, nyu, columbia, usc, tufts

help please!! thank u!! 🙂

By building relationships, I think it means having friendly chats, insightful discussions, showing your interest in the school, and in general making a good impression. This, of course, has to happen prior to the application.

I have about the same GPA and 23AA/23TS/22PAT, are you saying I'm going to get interviews??

If your apps are already in, I think it's likely you'd get an interview somewhere.

Haha no I meant for next cycle assuming my stats are the same as his. He said he had like 2.6-2.8 sGPA/BCP with a 23AA. I was just surprised that you were so sure that someone like me would get an interview. I know my DAT is good but my GPA really sucks!

Well I did use several assumptions in forming that opinion. I remember reading your breakdown and read this was your third DAT attempt with each attempt showing higher and higher scores so that's good. Obviously your scores are 90+ percentile so that is awesome. And the last bit was (and probably the only one I wasn't 100% sure about) was you may have an upward trend in your last few terms of college. Your culmGPA is higher than most schools averages so your app won't get thrown out and assuming you have good ECs/PS, if you applied broadly enough, there are schools that will give interviews. Hell maybe even Columbia since they're supposedly a 75/25 split on DAT/GPA. Maybe I'm just being hopeful cause I'm in a similar situation. I know of one user with similar stats to us who got an interview at Tufts yesterday so it's worth a shot.

I'd love to go to Columbia! Don't get my hopes up like that. I'll probably apply to all the California schools with Western or USC being my #1 choice. I really need to destroy this Master's GPA though 😉

You're on the right track! Finish up your SMP and apply broadly and you'll be good.

This post is for everyone one with a sub 3.0 GPA and also to gain exposure to my new blog. I too was once a sub 3.0er, who retook courses before applying to dental school.

To all of you who have a sub 3.0 GPA, you have the power to change your stats and get to where you want to go. Have hope and good luck on your journey in becoming a dentist one day.

Check out my blog if you got questions or are bored waiting for interviews.

Hey guys,

This year I applied to about 10 American Schools and 2 Australian Schools.
My AADSAS application was mailed out 8/28 and I finished most secondary apps by early October.
My stats are:
BCP 3.36/Science 3.13/Non-Science 2.53/Total 2.99
AA 23/TS 23/ PA 24/ RC 24
During first year, I had one term where I simply dropped out and had 4 gpas of 0
frown.gif
From Third year second term my gpas were all 4.0.

Not surprisingly i haven't heard back from any american schools, but I received an offer from Melbourne University in Australia.
The problem is that, Melbourne wants me to accept/decline by Oct.26 and the schools starts in February.

So my dilemma is, I don't' know whether i should just screw US schools and go to melbourne or defer melbourne's offer for a year and give US schools a shot.

If I were an adcom I'd totally invite you. Low years then subsequent 4.0 = you are a 4.0 material. I know many people in my school who are, no offense, not that bright, and manage to get 3.6+ GPA consistently. The people who can get 4.0 in one or more years in our school are the ones who are truly smart. This is just my opinion, but I'm not impressed with 3.6, 3.8, 3.7, 3.8 -- I am more impressed with 2.0, 2.5, 4.0, 4.0 (assuming you took decent workload and not at a CC, of course).
If I were you I'd call the schools and ask them (I know they discourage that but I think you have nothing to lose). Tell them your situation. I think many adcoms might skip your app just because of the 2.99, without further looking into your trends. Call them and ask them please take a more detailed look into my GPA not just the number. That's what I'd do anyway. Good luck! 🙂

Assuming you want to practice in the US: I'm not sure how it is exactly for international dentists (please someone correct me if I'm wrong), but don't they have to complete a couple of years or so at a US dental school before they're allowed to practice over here? Would this be a problem for you?

At that point, is it worth it to spend a couple of years doing postbacc work (how much more can you raise your GPA realistically?) and applying to US schools or just going to Australia and deal with the whole being an international dentist when you get back to the States?

These are questions that only you can answer.

Would also love to know more deetz about your application, cumberland34! Please be as specific as you can get! 😀

I admit I don't belong here. But this is the best thread ever. 😍 love

I am a Kentucky resident, I was very surprised!!! But blessed ! I played sports in college and had a lot of leadership positions . At my interview I was told my personal statement was meaningful( which I just talked about how important a smile is to me ) UK is my dream school so I am very excited !!!

i've been silently lurking in this thread for days now because heck, i belong in this club.

i just took my DAT yesterday and got a pretty average score (AA 22 TS 22 PA 22). i thought i had done pretty well until my aunt told me one of her worker considered a score of 25 not good enough for schools. what a way to deflate my excitement.

anyways, back to business. i graduated from a UC with the cGPA of 2.75. bad, i know but i back then i didn't even consider going to dental school at all.

after trying hopelessly for a year to get either a job or extra classes, i almost gave up. you would think it'd be easy to find community colleges to take a year of bio but nooooo. by sheer luck, i found an accelerated science program that offered accredited pre-reqs for health science bound students and voile! i finished a year of bio and anatomy & physiology with solid A's raising my cGPA over 3.0 and my sGPA to at least 2.9 i think?

with that ridiculous story out of my way, what do you think? i'm applying western, USC, midwestern AZ, midwestern IL, UoPacific, tufts, ucla, and loma linda.. well, those were some of the ones i put on the DAT but i'm going to apply to way more schools after reading through all the threads. any recommendations?

anyways, a lot of you guys are a great inspiration for people like me, so i'm really thankful for this community 🙂

Congrats on picking yourself up and continuing on this difficult path. I wish you the best of luck and much success because I'm in a very similar situation.
BTW, what accelerated science program did you complete to raise your stats? I recently graduated from UCI and am looking for a good program in California

So here is my official breakdown:

PA 22 93.4
QR 20 94
RC 22 84.4
Bio 21 92.3
GC 20 79.8
OC 21 85.7

AA 21 93.4%

700+ hours of cs
50 hrs of shadowing

B.S. cell and molec biology

Thank you SDN for the words of encouragement, they really helped me when I wanted to give up when I was studying.

My apps are out. Any assessments of my chances?

Woah! Your GPAs, cs, and shadowing are similar to mine. If you would please keep us posted on your progress, that would be greatly appreciated. Good luck to you!
