Hey all!

I decided I would post an update since we all have been in classes for a few weeks now. I went through about 4 different variations of my schedule, and eventually ended up with one I enjoy quite well. Below is my updated review, but first my final schedule.

PHIL 110
PHYS 201
PSYC 400
PSYC 420
STAT 201

I ended up getting sick the second week of classes, so I had to drop my physics lab and take a W. Oh well, it was better than starting out at an 80% in the class.

Intro to Logic I - PHIL 110
This class is so easy, especially since I took, "Intro to Logic II" last semester. I showed up on Friday, had a quiz I didn't know about, and aced it. It sucks the professor takes attendance or else I wouldn't go at all. My only complaint is the huge number of freshmen in this class -- dear God they are annoying as hell.

General Physics I - PHYS 201
This class is still pretty cool, and really doesn't seem that difficult. You need to know trig like a guy knows his dominant palm though. The actual mathematics isn't real challenging, especially if you have had calculus, but there's so much stuff to remember and keep straight when working a problem. It has gotten a little more difficult since we added in problems that consider friction as well as angle, but it's not too bad.

Survey Learning & Memory - PSYC 400
This class is turning out to be more difficult than I had ancitipated. The material is no joke and requires you to keep up to date and recent with the assignments, something I'm guilty of not doing.

Survey Developmental Psychology - PSYC 420
This class is still pretty fun and seems more straightfoward than I had anticipated. There's a lot of material but nothing as complicated or detailed as in the previous psychology course. All I have to do is get off my ass and read to make an "A".

Elementary Statistics - STAT 201
This class is stupid. It's easy as hell and full of tedious busy work. The TA for the lab is from Austria and sounds EXACTLY like Arnold Schwarzenegger, which makes it very entertaining. The lab provides ample opporunity to work with various members of the class, so I get to meet new people. Plus they all think I'm pimp since I'm a SENIOR. This will be fun, but it will be easy to slip up and make a B+ if I don't keep up with the work. An "A" is a 92%, so very little margin for error.

I hope things are going well for everyone else. The weather is beginning to change here in SC. It's cooled off a bit, only reaching the high 70s and low 80s now. The rainy season is kicking off as well -- today was horrible. Another month or two and I'll be back in my kickass black leather jacket. 😎

JKDMed - freshmen are annoying as hell, eh? 😀 I was a freshman once, just last year. My current weather conditions here in Southern CA are still quite hot in September, but it sounds like your weather conditions are right on schedule. By the way, I wonder if anybody in your lab has cracked any jokes about the current governor race down in my state? 😳 That's pretty funny that you've got an Arnold look-alike. I've got a Vin Diesel look-alike for Calculus (he's got darker skin tone than Vin though), but he doesn't quite have the voice of 'im.

UCLAstudent - well, the soreness isn't as bad today as it was yesterday, but I'll manage. Hopefully, it'll be gone enough by tomorrow to the point where I can start re-developing my endurance again by running. I've been meaning to exercise for some time now. I'm quite overweight (5'8" 209 lbs.) so I figure that I should throw in some exercise after depriving myself of it last year (too much studying for classes - the "freshmen 10" kicked in).

Skaterbabe74 - Get well soon! I hope that you didn't miss anything important by not going to class today!

Well, not much new has happened to me today. It was typical again, but if you all must know, I have some homework to do, and some more Cell Bio to study. Cell Biology is cool and all, but I'm not a big fan of labs in the first place, so I guess my next (planned) semester will be hell, since it will incorporate 5 labs total for 3 different sciences (genetics, chemistry and physics). I wonder how I'll work that into my schedule.

Now I'll get back to doing my Calculus homework. The first exam is next Friday, I believe, so I'll be studying over the weekends. I seem to have less time to do stuff as I start getting involved in more and more things!

Well, so far my day has been stuck in a rut, if you all know what I mean. My math professor decided to assign the students a lot of homework for today (about 71 deriatives), which is pretty bad for someone like me, because I've now got tons of other things to worry about. I finally found this one textbook that's taken forever for me to look for. Then I found out that there's something weird going on with my financial aid and that I'll have to pay my school tuition by this Friday or face getting kicked out of the system +pissed+

For now, I'll be checking out just what the heck is up with the financial aid people at my school. I'm poor, for cryin' out loud, and I can't exactly pay the tuition without it.

At least Bio will be my last class of the day. Today will be a short one, so I'll have some time to start reading, I suppose.

Now let's see here...for tomorrow I will have to...

- do Calculus homework (71 problems of derivatives - you Calc people out there know what I'm talkin' about) and read on to the next section of the math book

- read the next two really big chapters for my Greek Philosophy text (the prof also explained that these are two of the hardest chapters)

- study tomorrow's lab in case the TA decides to give a pop quiz on it and do the homework that I have for lab

- read about 15 pages in the Logic textbook

I've definitely got a full plate ahead.

wow bio dude sounds like tons of work! Looks like its going to be a long nite for you, cheers. I cant even remember the last time i went to sleep before midnight thanks to all the work I get from school.

Biodude, i'm having issues w/ the financial aid office as well; both of my parents got laid off shortly before my bill was due, and i have to reapply for aid accordingly.

As for classes:

Physics- This class hasn't been too bad so far. I got a 100 on my first quiz, and I've been able to keep up with the reading with no problem. My professor does these conceptual questions that help us understand the concepts introduced in the text and lecture, which i find extremely helpful.

Organic- AAAAHHHHH!!! It's not too bad. Today is 'organic day,' ie, its the only class i have today. We're starting our second lab today, and having a test on friday. Wish me luck.

Genetics. AAAAHHHH!!!!! (genuine) First test on thursday. I understand the basics so far, but these damn probability problems are annoying me. Especially when not given the full genotypes😡 . Genetics Lab isn't too bad, though. We made spleen smoothies and extracted DNA from it.

Bio Lab II- A breeze after doing the summer program in NYC 😎

Environmental Toxicology- Sounds disgusting, but my second easiest class so far (next to physics). The class has about 5 people total (if the name of it didn't imply), so we are able to get more out of it.

My brain hasn't exploded after four weeks, so I should make it through this semester just fine. RAdom isn't too bad, since my hall is virtually microscopic (9 ppl, all older than me, don't party on campus), and I've actually had time to take part in the literary mag and ethics bowl team.

Talking about look alikes....
My anatomy prof looked exactly like Hulk Holgen, long mustach and all. Everyone called him "the hulk". He was a really nice guy though! 🙂

Hey all!

I'm finally starting to feel a little better. My fever has gone down and I have more concentration ability again. Thank goodness! I haven't had an illness with a fever in forever! lol. Suffice it to say I haven't gotten anything at all done in the last couple days so today will be spent catching up. I've got 2 prelabs and 2 lab reports due on Thurs, a chapter's worth of orgo problems to work, physics problems to work, and I'll have my first assignment for research methods due Monday. Next week I have my first quiz in cell bio on Wed, my first Orgo exam on Thurs, and my first physics exam (don't know what day that is yet tho).

Sounds like you're having fun in most of your classes JKD. A 92 cutoff for an A sux tho!

Biodude - I don't think i missed much Monday or today in classes. Biggest thing would have been missing clicker questions in orgo but it was only like 5 questions so it'll work out in the end fine. Sounds like your math prof is a masochist when it comes to homework lol. Suppose he figures that the more practice you do, the more second nature they'll become, and you'll breeze thru the exams, but 70 odd problems in one nite is ridiculous! Sorry to hear fin aid is being a pain too. I hope it all works out ok 🙂 Good luck getting it all done!

Vix - long time no see! Sorry to hear about your folks getting laid off but at least you'll get a good EFC now 🙂. Sounds like you're having a good semester so far tho. Congrats on the 100 on the physics quiz! Good luck on your orgo and genetics exams this week!

Okey Dokey - I'm off to work on lab reports. Later all!
--Jessica, UCCS

Hi, all...

I've been working quite a bit at the hospital this week. It's quite draining (but definitely worth it). A doctor on the admissions committee of a med. school I'm interested in is taking me out to lunch on Thursday, so that should be fun. 😀

I read all of the new posts, but I desperately need a nap, so I'll come back and respond later.

Skaterbabe74 - masochist? Nah, I think that you meant to say sadist. Masochists like to feel pain, and sadists like to see others' pain. He definitely feels that we'd benefit from doing so much because what we have to do for homework now is, according to the prof, "The backbone of all of Calculus" Well, I haven't been exposed to Caculus before, so I can't really comment either way. And lab reports, ugh! 😛

vixenell - is Genetics really as bad as everyone says it is? It seems like people hate the class so much 😀 I will be taking Genetics next semester with Physics I and General Chemistry II...now aside from the labs, would you call that schedule insane? Just wanted an opinion. Anyway, it looks like you're taking all science classes! Yikes! I hope that you can balance out your study schedule with it, and your financial situation sounds worse than mine. Hopefully you'll pull through, and I do know the pain of having to fill out all those stupid forms.

Valinor - Hey dude! Where have you been? Why don't you start posting more often?

JKDMed - 92 as the lowest A sucks. I know how that feels. For my Cell Bio class, the prof put 93% as an A- 92 and below are a B! 😱

Okay, so I went to the financial aid office to see what the heck is up with my situation, and I found that they goofed up on information about my family's taxes 😡 They thought that I had more money than I actually have, so I have less money now from financial aid and it is all in loans! +pissed+ I'm hoping that they clear this up soon because I have to get my tuition money in by Friday.

Now I'll get back to doing my homework...

Biodude-- I suppose genetics isn't too difficult.. if you're genuinely interested. i have to force myself to pay attention. I've never had to do that in any other class. But I'll get back to you after my first test is graded😛

Genetics with physics and gen chem II? Its doable. You will have to be extremely disciplined. Physics is beastly for many, mainly because they haven't had it before; i was fortunate enough to be forced into college-level phys in high school. Alot of it depends on the professor, though. Just do problems until your fingers bleed. For all of those classes, actually. Its best if your text comes with a solutions manual. But i find it helpful to go beyond the assigned work to get a better grasp of the material (plus, professors are floored when you come to them with questions about unassigned problems).

My orgo teacher told me after lab that i have the makings of a good scientist.... LOR, baby. 😀

Today was long, but not so bad. More lame statistic stuff in analytical though...boooooring...
Tonight I have a pre-lab for orgo to do..
Tomorrow we have Orgo in the morning, then lab where we'll use MelTemp to find the melting point of a recrystallized compound for the first time, and we'll prepare a compound of dulcin.

Hey all! 🙂

I'm actually feeling about 80% of normal again unless I start coughing too much lol. Yay! Managed to get my write up and prelab for orgo done tonite. Wasn't nearly as bad as my physics one will be cuz we have to do 5 different graphs for that lol. That's what I'll be doing tomorrow nite. Even figured out how to use ChemDraw tonite 🙂.

Was talking to one of my friends that I share a lot of classes with this semester this evening. I swear our cell bio prof thinks he's teaching biochem lol. We are going to have to be able to name amino acids based on their chemical structures and be able to name which examples of acid A.A's, basic A.A's, polar, aromatic, bulky, conformational constrainer, crosslinker, and hydrogen bonding ones. Given a polypeptide with abbreviated amino acids we're going to have to draw the peptide bonds (and functional groups) connecting them all (including the kinks if there are any, which only certain amino acids cause). Guess what I'll be drawing over and over and over this weekend hehe. Hopefully this will make biochem pretty easy tho lol.

UCLAstudent - Sounds like you've had a busy but fun week. WTG on the lunch with the adcom! Hitting it off well with adcoms never hurts!😉

Biodude - Ok you're right. I meant sadist lol. I'm sure financial aid will be able to fix things for you. At the very least they should be able to waive the due date on your tuition until they get the proper tax info for your mom, and get your package expanded. You'll be fine with genetics, physics, and gen chem II next semester. Gen chem II will be a lot easier for you I think then Gen chem I was...a lot less visualization things...more straight math.

Vix - See the probability problems I always had fun with in genetics. I just thought of them as little puzzles. (Course that was for an intro genetics class at a CC so who knows what I'll think of it next semester when I take the upper division one we have to take to graduate lol.) Actually that intro genetics class is what made me return to being a biology major. I took that before I took Gen Bio lol. I certainly hope I still find myself enjoying genetics and not having difficulty with it next semester since I'm ending up with Orgo II, Physics II, genetics, and micro I next semseter lol. I'm curious to see how 4 labs are gonna fit in too hehe. At least by then I'll be an old hand at Excel and ChemDraw so labs won't take as long to write up lol.

We have an awesome function on our "paperwork" website for school tho. This is where we check financial aid, grades at the end of terms, register, etc. There's also a link for seeing the progress you're making in your degree and what you still have to take. Biomechanics/kinesiology and Biomechanics of Musculoskeletal injuries both count in my Organismic area requirement so I don't ever have to take another class from my A&P prof! Yippee!! That also means I can take exercise physiology next fall and add something fun into the fall of my senior year!😀 Now I'll only have 2 "hard" classes next fall: Analytical Chem and Biochem and then Injury Prevention, Health and Fitness, and Exercise Physio 🙂.

Ok I need to get to bed. I'm of course not in the least bit tired since I'm feeling so much better, but 6am will be here before I know it lol.

Nite all!

How are you people.
I finally got my ENG 190 paper back he said he really likes except for that a little more editng was necessary because i had a fair amont of silly mistakes.
skateboard i see your better ,i hope you recovere soon, i t also seems you got a lot to do.

Uclastudent // thats awesome. i wish good luck  the lunch should really interesting.

biodude// was was your Calculus pprof thinking when he gave you 71 problemmaybe he think your a machine.

Minx- congrats on the paper! Now that I think about it, I never got my Killer Babies paper back from my history professor... I couldn'tve done too bad if i still got an A in the class, but I'd like to see her comments on it.

Grr. My school doesn't offer human A&P. I'll have to take it during the summer or spend a semester at another school.

My goal for this semester is to maintain a 3.8 cum or so so that i can a) keep this lovely computer, b) hopefully get another scholarship so that I can say buhbye to loans, c) secure another decent summer research experience.

vixen- thanx , that a massive GPA. Well i'm getting to 3.0 but nearly there (2.9) congrats on you A to you
biodude- i'm sure going to solve your finacial aid prob.

Minx, congratulations on the paper!

Vixenell, good luck with getting a 3.8. I know you can do it if you put your mind to it! 😀

Biodude, good luck with the financial aid stuff. It will all work out in the end!

Skaterbabe74, I'm glad to hear that you're feeling a bit better. Hopefully, you can make a full recovery soon! 🙂

I put in more time at the hospital today (surprise, surprise). Tomorrow's my lunch with the adcom doctor! She's taking me to the faculty cafeteria. I'm so excited. 😀

Today wasn't too bad. Nice to get out in the afternoon. Tomorrow I have analytical, which BTW is the most boring class in the universe, analytical lab, and macroecon. I have to do some stuff for econ tonight, but otherwise I'm relaxin!

Hi Guys,

Wow, I sure feel outta the loop - I've been on vacation for a week and look! This thread is up to 9 pages! Anyways, I feel so lazy - all of you have started class already and I don't start until the end of this month... I guess I'll be regretting it when I get out late...

Um, let's see - it's good to see everyone is doing mostly okies! I'm actually excited about starting class in the Fall, although I'm going to be the oldest student in my dorm (a senior... gosh how time flies), and I'm going to be surrounded by freshmen. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not, but last year I was drowning in freshmen and it wasn't so bad. I get to be lazy this term, only taking 3 classes - so I'm happy about that too. I think I'll have to put off taking a 3rd language, it's too much work since I want to take extra science classes this year.

I'm hoping for good grades this year, so good luck everyone!

Hey all! 🙂

Well today pretty much sucked. lol...while I'm relatively over my cold I had other sickness issues today (one's that happen only to females and totally suck...in my case they make me feel like i'm physically sick) so that on top of my cold didn't make for a fun day. I also had to do my physics write-up today which was a major pain in the a#$. I have office '95 and trying to do graphs on that excel is more trouble than it's worth. Never was able to figure out how to do the best-fit lines/equations and error bars...ended up doing those by hand which I'm sure made my numbers way off but oh well. And then my formatting on the rest of the write-up kept getting off anytime I added in a table for data. I probably spent a good 6 hours just writing the dare thing today! I still have to finish my physics prelab for tomorrow but that shouldn't be too bad this time anyway.

Congrats on finally getting your english paper back Minx!

Wow Vix - That's an awesome gpa! I'm still working to get above that 3.0 mark lol...but by the end of next summer I should be well above it again (fingers crossed) cuz I'll knock some of my low grades outta there over the summer. My goal is a 4.0 this semester so that I can get the override that I need for next semester.

Sounds like you're having a good albeit somewhat boring semester so far Cozmosis. I could stand one of those one of these semesters hehe.

WB AspiringDoc....where'd you go for vacation? And don't worry, you'll be starting up soon enough here lol. I don't think I could stand living with a bunch of freshman just figuring out how to live on their own anymore lol....but I'm quite a bit older than the typical senior even hehe. Hopefully you'll get another good group this year too!

Ok back to physics....then I think I'll read my research methods chapter (they are short hehe) just so I don't have to worry bout it this weekend while working on the assignment for that class. No biggie...just take a journal article and figure out the hypothesis, variables, assumptions, etc lol. Should take me more than an hour since we already did most of that last week in class as a group for our articles.

Later all!
--Jessica, UCCS

erm, perhaps the term 'maintain' was a tad misleading. I'm hoping to boost my GPA to 3.8 (from a 3.5) this semester... which would pretty much require a 4.0.

Today's my killer day... class from 8:00am-5:30, then ethics bowl practice, them an unofficial organic cram session.

Anywho, I'm off to beast my genetics test. 😀

Morning everyone...

vixenell - Well, I know what that's like...I'm also in Skaterbabe's lot by the way. My GPA is hovering at around 2.95 and I seriously need it to go up to 3.5 or even better, 3.6 Does that sound impossible to you at this point unless I start getting 4.0's (which is going to be somewhat difficult)?

Skaterbabe74 - Doing lab write-ups sure stink, don't they?

AspiringDoctor9 - What's so bad about drowning in freshmen? 😀
Well, this computer that I am working with right now (a school computer) really blows so I'll keep this brief:

Yesterday was a pretty long day in terms of classes that I had to attend. I had Calculus, and the prof assigned tons of homework (once again a whole bunch of DERIVATIVES). Then I had Cell Bio lab, which was pretty darn cool. After that I had to scoot on over to Logic and Greek Philosophy. Now I've got quite a few readings to do by Monday.

Today I only have one class but it's still quite important because I have my first exam (it's a comp quiz but I still think of it as an exam) in Cell Bio. So I'll be studying and let everyone know how it goes when I get home!

Biodude- not impossible... depends on how many semesters you have left , and how many credits you took each semester. If, for instance, you got a 2.95 cum for year one, you could pull it up to a 3.2-3.3 with a B+ average by graduation . If you could pull a B average this semester, a B+ average the next 2 semesters, and a A- the next semester, and a A the last semester, you'd be in pretty good shape in the eyes of adcoms. Even if you only progress to a A- or B+, a progressive 3.3 cum typically looks much better than a straight 3.3. Keep that in mind.

I've got a 'break' until my genetics test at 1:15... I don't feel like I can study any more without risking some of it leaking out of my ears. So I'm watching this 9/11 memorial thing. They've got these kids who had relatives die in the attack reading off the names of the victims. Can't help but get a little teary eyed when children are reading the names.

Wow, all this time I have been thinking my 3.3 GPA will sink me. Now I don't feel so bad. However, I am still trying to bring it up an entire 1/10 of a point in a single semester! That means I have to get a 4.0.

At the least I'm confident I'll get back onto the dean's list this semester. I have noticed a huge change in my cognitive development and maturity this past semester. It's crazy how much people change during college. I think the change is broken up into 2 or 3 stages.

Stage I: The change of maturity between the high school years and college life. Some people fail to successfully transition to this stage, which constitutes a large percentage of the college dropouts. This stage is completed around Sophomore year.

Stage II: This change occurs once the individual has successfully progressed to Stage I and has further educated himself. Cognitive changes alter the way of thinking, and the individual is capable of more "abstract" and original thinking. The transition to this stage is typically completed around the Junior Year.

Stage III: This is an optional stage of progression that not everyone goes through during undergrad. This stage is marked with further cognitive and emotional development. The student exhibits further skills in abstract and original thought, and connections between theory and practicality are more apparent. This stage is sometimes acheived early or late in one's Senior year, or during graduate studies.

Now that I have been in college for three years, it's amazing the changes I have been through. I actually feel smarter. I think a liberal arts education had a lot to do with it. Boo to science majors! 😀

Anyways, school is going pretty well. Like I said, I expect to be back onto the dean's list at the minimum, hopefully the President's list. I have been putting off studying for my first physics exam, which is Friday. It's a shame I already know the professor drops our lowest exam, so that shot my motivation to study for the first exam all to hell. I work much better once I know there's no second chances, so I'll probably waste the first exam.

I haven't changed my volunteering yet, just been too lazy to submit the application. I have skipped my volunteering at the hospital the past two weekends, primarily because (a) I intend to change and (B) I'm looking for employment at one of the hospitals. I'm hoping to get a job as a "Mental Health Assistant", a job which I am qualified for. That would be sweet if I got it.

I'm also working on getting a new vehicle, but I may not be able to do that until January. I'm still driving the same '94 Camaro I have had since high school, and it's up to 140,000 miles now! 😱

Forgot to mention, I bought my girl an engagement ring! It's nothing fancy because I'm a broke-ass unemployed doctor wannabe, but at least she'll have one. She's been bugging me to get one and I think I have pretty much convinced her I'm not going to. I think I'll pop the question on our "dating Anniversary" on October 16. We'll have been together for 5 years!

For those who don't know, she's a 2nd year student at one of the auxillary campuses of my University -- the campus I almost went to! (I decided to attend the main campus because of the NROTC program). She has applied to nursing school and will find out if she got in sometime in October. I'm sure she did though, her GPA is better than mine. But of course, my curriculum has been much more difficult.

She wants to be a labor/delivery nurse, which is fine. Although I'm making sure she knows about CRNA 😀

Anyways, good luck to all and have a great day!

My genetics exam has officially been beasted. 😀

Hi all!

Well, started my math and chem classes last week. So far, am buried under mounds of math homework 😱 Went to Chem 1A on Saturday (It's an all day Saturday class) and the professor didn't show up! She sent a substitute who called roll, handed out the syllabus and told us we could leave! Was odd to me since we only have 15 (well now 14 Saturdays) in which to complete the first semester of Gen Chem. I've done the first chapter problems and am pleased to say that I remember most of it - Significant Figures, metric conversions, percent error...all that fun stuff! This will be excellent review for the MCAT.

It's great to finally have started my journey! It's funny how serious I'm taking these courses as now IT ALL COUNTS towards that Science GPA. 😛 Can't afford to screw up 🙂

Glad everyone is doing well so far this semester/quarter!

Roselee

vixenell - Thanks for the encouragement and that's cool that you rocked your exam! Now then...I have finished 38 semester units (not including 3 units I took at a community college but my current GPA does not compute that course in...I still get credit so that I don't have to take it over again though) I still have around 101 units to go if you wanna factor in this semester's courses. I've always been bummed about my GPA for college but I figured that it's a gunner thing 😀

JKDMed - Hey dude, sounds like you're getting your stuff together. Got any advice for someone who's CONSIDERING becoming a military physician since you're planning to? I think that the military is cool but I'm not certain if I would want to put in anything for sure until I find out exactly what the HPSP thing requires. Oh yeah, for your stages, I would say that I have passed STAGE I some time around February of my freshmen year...it took that long for me to realize just what a privilege it is to be in college and to get my act together. Right now, I am trying to get through STAGE II...after all, I am taking Philosophy classes now and that generally requires a different thought process when compared to studying for say Math or Biology. Sounds like you are good at putting these stages up.

Roselee - I know how ya feel about that darn math homework (check out my 71 derivative post above). I wonder why math profs have to torture students with this stuff 😛 Hmm...14 Saturdays to complete Chem...yikes 😱

Now I am home and trying to figure out what's happening with my financial situation. The Cell Bio exam was super duper easy! If the rest of them for the semester are as easy as the one I did today, then studying for them should be a piece of cake! No wonder my Cell Bio prof slapped 93% and higher as an A and 92% and below as B, C, D, and F!

For the rest of the day, I will be:

- figuring out my financial stuff

- doing my math homework (I've got too much to do this week 😡 )

- studying what I will be doing for lab tomorrow as well as doing the homework for lab tomorrow

I guess that's it...now tomorrow, I will be:

- going to math class

- going to Cell Bio lab for the fifth time in the semester

- going to the second meeting of the Student Health Professions Association at my school

- checking out the Biology Club (now they bumped the time down to fit into my schedule  )

- going to the fourth Wu Shu Club/Team practice; this time I should be more used to it...hopefully 😀

Well, that's all! I'll be back, I promise!

Hey all! 🙂

Ok, today was a much better day for me lol. Although it started not so good cuz my bus was running late and despite the fact that the base operator asked my transfer bus to wait when giving the rest of the busses permission to leave the station he wasn't waiting. I caught him pulling out of the station but I was obviously upset that the dude didn't wait despite being told to, and then he started giving me attitude asking me if I'd heard him answering back to base that he was staying! Course on most of the busses you can hear the base conversation fine, but barely hear other operators talking to base so how in the world was I supposed to know if he had heard?!? Let alone the fact that there is no way he could have missed that if he'd had his radio on at all at pull-out time cuz the base said "10-40 at such and such time except for #3. I need u to wait for a transfer from the #6"! The driver was like "Don't ever force yourself on my bus like that again. If you had been nice I wouldn't have had a problem, but you had this attitude!" I was sooo furious...I wasn't the one with an attitude...all I said was that he was supposed to be waiting for me! Anyway we both settled down and by the end of the ride he was mister nice guy again so I just blew it off.

First class was Orgo lab. We did a microdistillation of cyclehexane and toluene. Got a good outcome too. ~2.1 ml after starting with 2.5 ml. Class started at 9:25 and I was outta there by 10:45 lol. Longest part was waiting for stuff to cool so I could clean it and put it away. Went down to the SLC (science learning center) and ran into one of my orgo/physics classmates who gave me the homework assignment for physics since my prof never emailed me back. I worked a few orgo problems, picked up my orgo quiz from last week, and headed off to orgo lecture. I made really stupid mistakes...like accidently putting 5 bonds on a C in a molecule rather than 4 so no partial credit for that one, and then putting extra hydrogens around a cyclic ring and ending up with too many hydrogens in my molecular formula and missing an oxygen completely lol...so no credit there either. Conformations are making a lot more sense after lecture today tho 🙂. Then it was off to physics lecture. We finished the material that will be on our first exam next friday today so we have plenty of time to ask questions about problems and let it all sink in. I think I'm going to like his exams tho - 10 mc concept questions, 4 1step problems, and 2 multistep problems. Doesn't sound too awful. My last class today was physics lab. Today was dropping a steel ball down a ramp and recording it's downward parabola so that was easy too 🙂. We also got our first 2 prelabs and our first write up back. I got a full 100/100 on my write up and only missed 5 points out of 30 on one of the prelabs. 😀

Tonite I'm gonna work some orgo problems and try and start my physics homework but that's not due til Tues so I'm not too worried about it. I imagine our prof will go thru half of the problems on the homework tomorrow anyway lol.

Classes from 8-5:30 Vix? LOL...I thought my 9:30-4:45 was bad hehe. Congrats on bustin out your genetics exam! I'm sure you'll get that 3.8 cum that you want this semester!

Biodude - When having to use computer programs to write lab reports yes they do suck lol. Once I become fluent in the programs tho they'll be a breeze again. Congrats on the ease of your cell bio exam! Knew all that studying you were doing for it would pay off lol.

JKD - I like your stages lol. They definitely ring true. I think it took me moving out here after almost bombing out for the first 5 years after hs to get past stage 1 lol...but I also kind of skipped over parts of stage 1 and started stage 2 while failing dismally at other parts of stage 1 lol. And congrats on the future engagement! I'm sure she will love the ring!!

Roselee - Congrats on finally being on your way 🙂. I can't imagine immersing myself for an entire day in gen chem tho lol. It sux that your prof didn't show but at least the first chapter is pretty easy. Hopefully she'll be there next week. And while I'm sure 14 weeks seems pretty intimidating at the moment taking it the normal way really isn't much longer...maybe a week or two at most. Since you're spending your entire Saturday in class for it it works out to about the same time frame so I'm sure you'll be fine 🙂.

Have a good evening all!

::does happy dance::

Beasted orgo exam, too. 😀 Atleast, I think so. I don't know how he grades, he might be anal about not explaining things or something. But I'm pretty sure I got everything right or right-ish. We'll see in about a week.

I've got class until 12:30 (physics and genetics) then I work from 1 to 6 in the environmental studies wet lab.

Afterwards, I think I'm gonna hibernate for about 25 hours!

Skaterbabe- good job on your lab... We're starting our third lab next week (we've done TLCs and caffeine extraction from tea so far). I can't even think far enough ahead to what we're doing on tuesday, but I think it has something to do with crystallization.

Biodude- Wanting good grades doesn't make you a gunner. Strategically assassinating (literally or figuratively) everyone who makes better grades makes you a gunner.

Rosalee- Bummer about your first chem class. It seems kind of stressful in itself, only having 15 classes to cover so much material. But I'm sure you have what it takes to suceed.

JKDMed- Those stages make sense. I'm not sure where I am, but I hope its around III, or else I'm screwed.

Anywho, I don't wanna be late for physics so I've gotta run. Have a great day, all.

E

Vixenell, good job on the genetics and o-chem exams! It sounds like you're off to a good start this school year.

Biodude, don't freak out too much about grades. If you work hard enough, they'll come. Good luck! 😀

Skaterbabe74, sounds like you're having a splendid time with o-chem. 😉 That has been my favorite class that I've EVER taken. I know, I'm weird.

So, after putting in some time at the hospital yesterday, I went to have lunch with that adcom doctor. She first gave me a tour of the medical school on a little cart. After the tour, she took me to the faculty cafeteria. It was so fancy! After we ordered our meals, she proceeds to take out a little notebook and says, "I hope you don't mind if I jot some things down." That kind of scared me at first. I wasn't expecting to be scrutinized, lol. It wasn't too bad, though. She just asked me about extracurriculars, my reasons for wanting to be a doctor, and Bruins football. 😉 We had a lengthy discussion about the Dodgers, too. 😀 The whole meeting was a really good experience for me. I'm so glad that I got to know this lady better.

Off to work...

Just finished this semester's first Physics examination. Surprisingly, I think I owned it. It's really strange, out of the two scientific premed disciplines -- biology and physical sciences -- I seem to be particularly skilled in the physical sciences. I rocked inorganic chemistry (I actually ended up tutoring people, including a senior physics major) and I'm doing incredibly well in physics. I would not be at all surprise if I aced the exam!

A little advice for future physics takers: don't just memorize the formulas, memorize when to use them, and intend to plug and chug. Once the underlying concepts and interaction of forces clicked, it was a breeze. Instead of working countless problems until carpel tunnel destroyed my hands, I just memorized the formulas and how/why they worked. This way, I was able to discern which formula to use where on the basis of the problem's concept instead of its presentation, figuring things out as I went along. Does that make any sense?

About the stages, I realized those patterns in the recent months. I'm not sure if someone else has developed a similar explanation or not, but until then I'll take credit for them 😀

For the record, psychology is really cool! A lot of people crap on it because of its illusory "simplicity", but I suspect these people have never taken high-level psychology courses. I find the material both fascinating and challenging, as well as applicable. Unfortunately, I think one of my two psych courses may be the culprit in stealing away my hopeful 4.0.

Biodude -- We talked yesterday about your military aspirations. While I'm no expert, I have the benefit of having absorbed a variety of previous discussions on HPSP and military medicine. If you have any further questions or just want to chat, feel free to send me a PM or a shout on AIM. This goes for anyone else who wants to chat it up. 🙂

JKDMed - Thank you for the conversation via AIM. I certainly garnered quite a bit of info from that. It was just a curiousity that hit me because I was thinking about the military and all. That Physics tip also seems to apply to anything that uses formulas it seems 😀 Like Chemistry formulas from G. Chem I or my current set of Calculus problems.

Oh yeah, and Psychology is definitely NOT EASY hehe  I think that people should be taking Dr. Woll from my school for an upper-division Psych class, because he grades HARD. I'm not a Psychology fan, though.

UCLAstudent - Thanks for the encouragement. It's just that I was hoping to snag a 4.0 over the summer session to boost my GPA up to 3.01 at the very least. I'm just hoping to get 3.6 by my senior year of college, as 3.6 is the minimum required of people here in order to get a pre-med committee letter. That might sound a bit gunner-ish (I'm sure being a UCLA student you know what a gunner is), but people's chances of being accepted to medical school in the past seemed to improve dramatically upon getting a committee letter turned in to the schools.

By the way, it sounds like you may get a recommendation letter from this physician when you apply 😀

vixenell - Well, the term "gunner" sure has a lot of meanings. I know that one that seems to be passed around includes words such as "anal" and "perfectionist" both of which I'm usually not, but when it comes to showing that I could handle the sciences, I'm forced to do it...I guess people who make that definition are just jealous of the people who don't have to work hard to get straight A's. Hope ya did well in Organic.

Now on to how my day has been going so far...

Well, my Calculus professor didn't show up, so now the schedule may have to be changed quite a bit. Cell Bio lab was okay, but I do like the atmosphere over there. I think that I'm finally getting the hang of doing lab work because I have yet to make a mistake in the techniques that I am currently learning (microscope use, aseptic technique for bacteria, etc.) We'll see in about two weeks when my Lab TA begins to test everyone.

Right now, I am killing time before the second meeting of the SHPA for the Fall semester. A very important meeting too, because this is the one every year where the students get to meet the pre-med committee at my school  I'll be sure to ask some interesting questions for the pre-med freshmen who don't know what to ask. Biology Club's meeting time got moved to 3 p.m. which will perfectly fit into my schedule. I'll go check out the club and see what kinds of things they'll be doing this year.

I think that I may have to skip Wu Shu practice today because I forgot to bring in sweat pants. Oh well, it's no big loss, because Friday practices are for intermediate/advanced students and Saturdays are for beginners. While knowledge-wise I'm intermediate, in terms of physical fitness and actually doing the techniques CORRECTLY I am back to being a beginner. A little conditioning over the next several weeks or months and I should be back in-shape to do the moves!

Tomorrow, I will be...

- doing math homework

- going to Wu Shu practice

- doing Greek Philosophy readings

- doing Logic homework

Sunday I will be...

- finishing any homework that I didn't finish up on Saturday

- doing my next shift for HOAG Memorial Hospital Presbyterian

- going to a CCE meeting at HOAG to begin choosing my next department (here's to hoping that I get into Emergency Med!!!)

Later everyone!

Just cashed my long awaited paycheck... $62.52! Woo-hoo. I'm SO glad I have another job😡 RA pay isn't cutting it. I'll just have to cut back on my Arizona iced tea addiction for a month or so.

Lets see. Today I'm gonna watch a movie.. probably MST3K's Manos: Hands of Fate (I need a good laugh). Then I'll probably take a nap. Tomorrow, I have to hike to work to play with the new $90,000 HPLC. Then I'll probably study for Wednesday's Physics test.

I heard this morning that both Johnny Cash and John Ritter died. I knew Cash was ill, but Ritter's death came out of nowhere. He's probably one of the last people I'd have expected to die "young." 🙁

Hey all! 🙂

Today is just a study day for me. I decided to wait until next week to start working again just to make sure that I'm totally recovered since I have this bad habit of getting sick again over and over if I jump right back into everything. Plus I'm still kind of behind on stuff since I really didn't do anything for 3 days lol. Tomorrow I'm gonna head up to school after the Texas football game (my bf is a UT alum and got me hooked on their program...we don't have a football team at our campus so we don't really follow anyone even though I suppose we should root for CU Buffs lol) and deposit a check and then pick up the Schaum's Outlines for physics and orgo. I think I could use the extra practice in both cuz neither seem to be sinking in well enough for my liking with just the problems out of the book and homework.

Homework for the weekend includes: Reading Ch 5 in Research Methods (start filling out the lecture outlines that I missed) and doing my homework assignment for that which is due Mon.

Reading the readings for cell bio next week and studying for the 10 pt quiz on Monday (need to memorize A.A's, structure of ATP, and pathway diagram that he drew for ATP production among other things).

In orgo I need to finish the problems from chapter 3 (conformations and cyclcoalkanes) and do my homework assignment from that which is due Monday, read ch 4 (alcohols and alkyl halides), and come up with a plan for the exam on Thurs.

In physics I need to start the problems from chapter 3 (vectors) and do my homework assignment from that which is due Tuesday, read ch 4 (newton's laws), and come up with a plan for the exam on Fri.

If I have time I'll do my lab writeups and prelabs for orgo and physics so that I can "save" the week for studying for the exams, but otherwise I'll do those monday and tuesday nites.

Vix - We start our third lab next week too. Next week we'll be doing an extraction/drying for an unknown (either caffeine or resorcinol). Congrats on beasting the orgo exam too! Sounds like you're off to a great start! I was shocked to hear about John Ritter too....I thought that those sort of defects were usually detrimental earlier than age 54...especially for a guy who did as much physical stuff as he did during 3's company.

UCLAstudent - I don't think you're that weird for having orgo be your favorite class lol. I've run into lots of people who agree with that notion. I love our prof, and I love lab, but still need a bit more work at getting stuff to sink in lol. Sounds like you had a great time at lunch yesterday! Hopefully that will give you an advantage when you apply to her school!

JKD - Congrats on slam dunking your physics exam! I definitely agree with you about not just memorizing the formulas but the how, when, and why of them.

Biodude - Bet you sighed in relief when your calc prof didn't show lol. Gives you more time to get out from under that mound of problems he's making you do! I'm glad you're enjoying bio lab tho!

Ok I'm off to get some studying done...have a good weekend everyone!
--Jessica, UCCS

your school restricts who can get committee letters? that's just plain rude. there wasn't a restriction at my school, but they would make a recommendation not to apply with given stats.

i never used the term gunner until med school. throat was our word for the hard working backstabbing bastard who stole the merck index from the library.

Hahaha, yes, I definitely know some gunners at my school. Luckily, there aren't too many of them. I try to avoid them.

Sorry this is so short... I'm off to Disneyland.

Hi all!

It's been an insanely busy week-I went out Friday night with my husband and another couple to blow off some stress...therefore spent yesterday lounging around doing nothing constructive except having my friend put highlights in my hair. Oh well, it's the first time I've done that in about six months so I guess it's OK. And the kids are by their dad this weekend too so it's my "adult" time.

Today I'm back to work, though. This is what I've got to do before they get home at 6....

Chem quiz tomorrow morning-must study

Pre-Calc problems so I don't fall behind (man is it tough to force myself to look at math every night!)

Review anatomy stuff again tho I'm feeling pretty good since I aced the quiz Friday (found out that not only does he curve it, he is incredibly anal on the answers that he will accept. For instance, one of the questions was "Which surface is the head of the humerus on?" For full credit, we had to have "medial" plus either "superior" or "proximal". Luckily, I had all three so....looks like I'll have to keep up my anal attention to detail in this class (not that I WANTED to come across as a gunner but I'm being forced to😀 But I like to think I'm a nice gunner-I was spending a lot of time helping people in lab last week)

Flashcards for Medical Terminology-we're doing two chapters at once this week so we have about a hundred terms to learn

Also, I added a class b/c I was getting wonked out on sciences...History of Western Civilization and the Origin and Creation of Racist Stereotypes. I got permission for an override of 19 credits, and strangely, this class is actually making my load easier since it's such a different kind of thinking-it gives me a break and refreshes me to go back to the analytical step-by-step kind of stuff. There's only 2 papers and a final in this class-most of our grade is based on role-plays and the demonstration of critical thinking in class. Big plus-it's an upper-level so there aren't any annoying freshman in here (nice vacation from my other classes that are almost all freshmen🙄 )

And after the kids come home, I have to do laundry and take them grocery shopping for stuff for their lunches next week....

I'll be back later for personal replies, I promise😀 Just wanted to let you know I'm not dead yet...

Well, I know it's rude to restrict a committee letter, but at a school where the acceptance rate into health professional schools is about 85% WITH a committee letter, it's not surprising. So, at my school, a student must:

- score at least a 3.6 GPA out of 4.0 total

- do quite a bit of extra-cirricular activities

- show our motivations to be a doctor (or dentist, or pharmacist, optometrist, PA, Nurse, whatever!)

Plus it can't be some BS thing like "I like to help people." What I mean is, you can't just say that. You need to back it up, like "I love helping people, I love science, and advances in the field of medicine are intriguing"

I'm still turning it over in my head. It seems like the reasons I have for going into medicine change as the months go by. Admittedly (sp?), I began because it seemed at the time that medicine offered big bucks for helping other people to get well. Then I thought that it was pretty cool to be able to not worry about "the real world" all that much for a long long time, and now that I'm diving head-first into clinical experience and delving into Philosophy, I find that money's not worth it, plus I actually like helping people more than making money. So...I suppose that I still wanna do it because of the autonomy that seems to be afforded to doctors.

I know that it sounds funny that Philosophy would encourage me to be less materialistic, but once you think about it, a lot of Philosophers were pretty frugal, weren't they? It doesn't take millions of $$$ to think deeply about the world around you. Actually, being poor would be a plus, believe it or not, because it forces you to use your brain and your creativity quite a bit...don't have a bed? Why not try building one yourself? 😛 I really don't care about the pay anymore so long as I get enough to pay off my debts and to make a decent living.

Not sure why I ranted up there, but hey, I haven't ranted all that much in a long while, have I? 😀

Well, today is quite packed when it comes to what I have to get finished with. I have to finish up my math homework which is all due by tomorrow. I also have to finish up 3 chapters in my Greek Philosophy text. Currently we're finishing up the section on what's called the "Pre-Socratics" because those Philosophers existed before Socrates. Next, we'll be delving into Socrates (then the first exam), and then we'll be reading Plato's Republic and finish off the semester with some readings by Aristotle.

I also have some Logic stuff to do. I just got back from my shift at HOAG today. I'm not quite ready to talk about it yet, so if y'all don't mind, I'll be typing up today's notes later today or tomorrow.

Ravens won today, and Jamal Lewis set the single game rushing record. I am ecstatic 🙂

Anyway, I don't have anything to do particularly tonight, as all I have tomorrow is Orgo.

I have a physics test this wednesday... it would be wonderful if I could beast all of my first tests...

But we'll see.

Anywho, today I have physics, enviromental toxicology (not looking forward to my test there, but its not until midterm), and genetics. Then I have to work until 4 or 5. Then I have two or three hours to contemplate whether or not I want to be on the staff of our literary magazine. The current president has been stalking me. I hope I'll have time for it.

Alrighty, I'm so anxious for the new season of "24." I made the mistake of going on the website and watching the 4 minute trailer. I haven't started my countdown or anything, but I miss my show. I don't have enough moolah to buy the second season on DVD, so I guess that will be my christmas/birthday gift to myself.

Has anyone here ever watched "Highlander?" One of my friends is a fanatic. She just bought the first two seasons on DVD. Somehow, I ended up watching about 8 episodes on friday and saturday with her and about 4 other people. It wasn't that bad. But we did spend a fair amount of time making fun of the bad accents and 80istic fashion sense of the early 90s. I think "Pharoah's Daughter" was among the funniest. The Highlander managed to sleep with a 2000 year old mummy.

Geez, I sound like a TV-a-holic. I swear, I only watch "24." And CNN. And C-SPAN. Thats it. "Highlander" was an accident.... it won't happen again😀 .

Biodude-- my philosophy class began at socrates... It was pretty comprehensive, so we didn't spend much more than a week on each. It was by far my favorite class so far. Mostly because my professor was a riot. And heck, anyone who plans a semester around being able to tie "Fight Club" into the curriculum deserves tenure.😛

Cozmosis-- WooHoo! Go Ravens. (football?)

Jenni - good luck on yer chem quizzes!

Skaterbabe- Good luck on yer cell bio quiz! Are you moving in more than 2 dimensions yet in physics? i remember not starting three dimensions until atleast the second half of physics in high school (atleast after collisions), but my professor just dived right in with it. Which is why I'm not looking forward to this exam. The only thing that works for me studywise is working out problems (its even more helpful if you have the solutions, which I don't).

Anywho, I've got to grab some breakfast before class.. Have a good day, all!

-E

Advice: Spend more time studying than posting.

Hey all! 🙂 Yay Broncos! 😀

Cozmosis - Lewis may have gotten the record, but my boy Clinton Portis was well on his way to a helluva record himself I think if he hadn't gotten blasted in the chest so hard!

jenni - Sounds like you're into the swing of things schoolwise 🙂. The "analness" of your anatomy prof is pretty typical, but you get used to it. Once you get out of the bones the location directors are often included in the names so it's not quite as hard to remember if it's proximal, distal, superior, inferior, etc. Good luck on your chem quiz this morning!

Vix - We really haven't started 3D yet, but are doing vectors/ballistic motion for this test. I understood his class examples, but I'm having a problem with just simple vectors lol. I'm sure I'm just missing something very stupid and basic but I'll take a look at the solution manual our SLC has today and figure out what the heck is going on.

And yes I love Highlander lol. Adrien Paul is just hot hehe 😀 . I used to date someone that was part of one of the production companies that does all those sci-fi conventions and helped work some of those for awhile so I got exposed to a lot of those type shows lol. I got hooked on it back when it was first on, but now it's on Spike TV (I think) so I try to catch it if I can. I'm definitely a TV-holic tho lol. Always have been. At this point the only things I make sure I watch are Survivor, football, figure skating, and Enterprise, but a lot of my old favorites are back on tv like MacGyver, Incredible Hulk, Knight Rider, etc so if I'm around when they are on and not too swamped I'll catch those too hehe.

I didn't get quite as much done this weekend as I wanted to, but I got the essentials done. My homework for Research Methods, Ch 3 problems and homework for Orgo, and some studying for Cell bio. I'll do some more today before class, but gosh it's only a 10 pt quiz, so I'm not gonna worry about it too much. Our first exam isn't til October for that lol. Tonite I have to do my physics homework which I'll start while working this afternoon (hopefully even finish), and then my orgo and maybe physics write ups so I can concentrate on exams the rest of the week.

Time to get going. Have a good one all!

Well, now I am quite convinced that I hate math. It's not the theorems, or the proofs, or the formulas that have to be memorized. It's the darn repetition of plugging and chugging in the formula/theorem into problems in homework assignments. I mean, geez, the exercises tax the mental endurance quite a bit, in having to use a formula over and over and over again and again...I realize that it's neccessary, but it's still very boring. Now I know that despite people trying to push me into the contrary, I just can not bring myself to like math one bit. I'm glad that I don't have to take any more math classes after Calculus (I mean pure math here; I'm totally fine if it's say Chemistry or Physics where the math is put to use instead of a bunch of random numbers that only serve as exercises to a formula).

So, anyway, I wanted to say yesterday that my day at HOAG was routine once again. Some patients were cool, others were not, but most were just in-between (as usual). I got to converse a bit with some of them, and the PCA I worked with was the one that I had been assigned to on my very first day as a Clinical Care Extender. Well, some people might think that volunteering in the Oncology Floor is good, but I'm not particularly fond of this rotation...I don't think that I want to be an Oncologist, or any type of a hospital-based Internal Medicine physician either for that matter. I also have something to say now when someone asks me why I don't wanna be a nurse. I must say that I totally respect the nurses and PCAs who have to be with the patients 12 hours a day! I could barely handle much more than 4 hours myself, and doctors spend about what, 5 minutes? Maybe 20 at most?

What was not routine was when my shift was over and I noticed a patient's family members grieving. I'm not quite sure just how bad the prognosis must have been, but I had quite an idea from the crying. I really wished that I could have said something, but I guess that my shift had taken away enough of my energy and I needed to get some fresh air from the hospital. Now I don't feel so great about myself...

The CCEs gathered in a meeting yesterday regarding updates on stuff and I noted that the Surgical Overflow department would be a bad place to volunteer in because of the harrassment that the volunteers seem to be suffering from. Not that I considered that department in the first place, but still...

We also got to pick out our choices for our next rotations. I slapped Emergency Medicine (ER) as my #1 choice. It's pretty tough, I hear, because you have to be really really assertive/aggressive in order to get the most benefit out of it, and I'm normally a passive person. My #2 choice was the Outpatient Surgery Clinic at HOAG, but unfortunately, they are only open weekdays from 8 to 5, which means that night-shift people and weekend shift people can not fit it into their schedules. So, I being a weekend shift person, was forced to remove that from my list of choices. Labor and Delivery (Obstetrics) seems to be very popular! About 150 people sign up for it and only about 56 get the spots. I marked that one as my #2 (if volunteers wanna go into the MAIN OR, they must first complete 36 hours in Labor and Delivery or Outpatient Surgery in order to grasp the concepts of sterile technique). I changed my #3 over to Orthopedics. I'm not sure why I did that, but it'll be a change of pace, plus I noticed that not that many people signed up for it.

Today is okay, I suppose. I'm still recovering from the weekend and it feels like I have little time for much of anything anymore. I have to go to classes, study, do homework, go to Wu Shu practices, volunteer at HOAG, and now I'll be doing some stuff for my school's next Blood Drive as well, in addition to some community service-type stuff for the Biology Club. My car is certainly working more too since I need it to pedal over to and from school more days than before, plus the 25 minute drive to and from HOAG Memorial Hospital.

That's all for now.

Sup all?,
I've posted in the original thread a few times under a different screen name. I've been following this thread religiously. I check it 2-3 times a day. hehe. I get inspiration from all the posts I read.🙂

Anyway, I am 20 and I've been in and out of school for sometime. In other words, I am not quite a steady student. But I am gonna pull up my socks now and start the ascent toward medical school. For this semester I've got general ed. courses, I haven't taken any pre-req science courses yet, but I will when I transfer to UIC next spring! That's all for now; Keep posting y'all!

Ashwin (I am a guy)🙂

Welcome back, UICpremed!

I've got to write up my orgo lab.. thats pretty much it. Might have time to write up my genetics stuff, too.

Ashwin is a cool name. I actually know a guy named Ashwin (atleast, its pronounced that way... It might be Ushwin).

Biodude-- I can't imagine that. Is the homework a major part of your grade? If not, I'd take a bunch of incompletes before wasting hours doing busy work. I never had to do more than 10-15 problems a per class (and that was on a bad night), and it wasn't just plug and chug.

vixenell - I guess you got off lucky then. Need I remind you of 71 Calculus DERIVATIVES waaayyy back in one of my old posts here? 😛 Anyway, homework is 10% of the final grade for that class (difference between letter grades...between an A and a B, a B and a C, etc.), so yeah I am gonna do it. As for homework in other classes, well, if I get behind on my readings for Greek Philosophy like for today, I end up getting really really really confused during lecture. For Logic, I will stop doing homework for that class once I have finished 20 assignments (1 assignment = 1 point and the max points for homework assignments is 20 even though there are around 30 total) 😀

UICpremed - welcome dude! And don't worry about the on and off thing. It's really hard to stay motivated when you think about the training and all the schooling required for a career in medicine. I know that my motivation faltered for quite a bit before.

I forgot to mention before that my Calculus professor decided to give yet another large barrage of homework problems. Man am I starting to dislike that dude...and Calculus in general! I guess I just don't have the right attitude, but I just don't like working with pure numbers all the time. Now I know that I wouldn't work out very well as an accountant  The first exam for this class is going to be on Friday and the instructor is behind in teaching the class 😡

Logic was pretty boring as usual. I wonder what went wrong through the course of the class. In any case, it was pretty uneventful, so all I have is a few readings to do.

Greek Philosophy...well, I didn't finish my readings for today, so it was quite difficult to make sense of the lecture. I guess I'll have to sit down and have a read in order to compare and review my notes. The first test may be coming up in a few weeks.

Tomorrow is Calculus 😡 and Cell Biology Lecture 😎

Wednesday will be so jam packed full of classes that I won't be documenting my experiences probably until Thursday.

What a weekend!!! I went to visit my bf two states away, it's quite a train ride that's for sure, but at least I was able to get a little workd done 🙂 It was the only chance I had all weekend I was so busy!!!

My OCHEM test went very well... 87% woo hoo!!! I know it was only a first quiz, but it's so nice to see my marks climbing... it makes me feel like I can actually do it... so much better than that failure I can tell you!!!! It kinda even encourages me to work harder so that I cana keep on doing well.... it's such a great feeling!!!!!😀 😀 😀

I hope everyone is doing well, and that all the work isn't bogging you down!!! Remember to have a little fun every now and then!!!! It really brings up the spirits!!!!

Talk to you all later,
climber

Hey Everyone!!!

I'm so glad that i have a few minutes to share how my life's been going lately.

Well, on a good note, MY B-DAY'S TOMARROW!!!!!!!!!
:hardy: :hardy:

But i haven't been as excited about things lately. I posted a thread the other day about how people stay "happy" during the really stressful times. My friend said i was "less vibrant than usual" and i can't afford to lose my one good quality. I used to be one of those smiley faces who always seem to be having a good day. I think now the stress is creeping out onto my face. eeek.

So to counteract that, i'm going to try to smile everytime i think of something stressful so that it'll hopefully reflect inward. But i'm certainly feeling better today than on saturday.

Ok, so my classes are going ok. I don't htink i have a hard semester, it's just a matter of staying on top of things. I have a really crazy schedule. MF i finish at 7pm (start 9), TTH 9-5, Wed, i finish at 1, but that day's quickly filling up as people start wanting to make study groups and stuff.

When i come home, i'm so dead tired, study is a beautiful thingto dream --about as i lay in bed. I seriously am longing to read my chapter on the endorcine system, but of course, i'm playing catch-up for the more demanding assignments, and it's not essential to have the chapter read and mapped out right this day/week...so you get the idea.

I also work saturday until 3, and have a hospital volunteer thing sundays from 8-1. So it's like i have no free day, and i'm the type of person that needs to have SOME quiet time, to plan, think, come-up with things...study.

So my schedule's pretty hectic, more busy than usual, i think i used up all my free-time for this year during last spring and over the summer since i basically did NOTHING for 8 ms.

Good things that happened, FINALLY got all my books (some had to ordered/delivered...now just gotta catch up on reading)

I got audio osmosis from a friend, so hopefully i'll have more productive commutes.

But you know what sucks? Here;s my schedule for tomarrow, the one day a year that i can call my own: 9-11 independent lab work, 11-12:15 french, 1-5<------------------4hr physiology lab, on my b-day!!! yuck! And it doesn't stop there, 5:30 to 7 study grp for physics HW.

Alright, i hope you all are having a good week, and pep talks are highly encouraged 😉

Hey guys!

I just got back from WWE Raw here in Columbia. For those of you who watch Raw, you probably saw me on camera several times. I was sitting with a friend next to the ramp the people came onto.

A night of drinking and cursing aside, I think I'll get some sleep. Prolly not class for me tomorrow!

Oh yeah, I got to talk to Trish Stratus and grab her hands! Excuse me while I go "sanctify" the;m.

ANd for the record, Stacy Kiebler is beyond hot.

Hey all! 🙂

Long day for me lol. First I had Research Methods which was extremely boring. We were in the computer lab today for the first time. Basically we were just fooling around with excel. Then I studied for an hour or so for my cell bio quiz that was later in the afternoon. Next up was orgo lecture. We started alcohols and alkyl halides today. Naming those is annoying lol! Especially needing to know both the IUPAC and common names...why can't the rest of the world (ie. chemical companies) finish switching over to IUPAC! lol. Then I had cell bio. The quiz was in the second half of the class which I hate. I'd much rather get it over with than have to sit and listen to a lecture over new stuff for an hour first lol. The quiz wasn't that difficult, but I didn't study enough of the right things. I think I did ok on it, but I know I missed the amino acid. I just soo don't have them all memorized yet lol. Now I have a good idea of what his exams will be like tho so I'm sure I'll ace those. After classes I distilled some stuff for my coworkers for a couple hours. I think I'll do distillations this week and then see if there's something else Dr Schoffstall can get me started on. I've pretty much done distillations to death lol. I got my physics homework finished while doing them tho 🙂. Then I came home and started working on my write up for last week's orgo lab. I'll finish my prelab for this week tonite, and then do my physics write up and prelab tomorrow nite. Hopefully I can get the graph I need done at school in the hour I'll have after class and before the ACS meeting since that's what actually seems to take the longest out of everything.

Tomorrow is a light day class-wise. I only have the lecture for orgo lab and physics lecture in the afternoon, but I'll be working in the stockroom in the morning so hopefully I'll get some studying done for orgo since that exam is Thurs. This weekend will definitely be a reading weekend lol. I don't think I'm going to have time to read any of the chapters we're working on in class this week until then😱 Oh well.

I'll catch up on comments next time around! Glad everyone is having a pretty decent week (even if some of you are math swamped at the moment lol).

Later!
