The Under M1 Club, Part II - COME ON IN!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey everyone, I haven't had a chance to read to newer posts because I have been busy with moving in and starting classes. I still wanted to let out some angst though. I went to my Analytical Chem Lab Lecture, and I found out that the class is graded on a curve, and there are maybe 80 people in the whole class, and only 25 in my section. It's definitely going to be interesting. Well it's back to the books for me. I'll try to write more during my next visit.

I'm dropping physics. I'm gonna try to swap sociology for macroecon. Decision done 🙂

Tonight I have my orgo prelab to do. Thats it. Worked my first day at the Chem learning center. Boring as hell, but its a job.

Cozmosis, glad to hear you made a decision! I'm sure it will work out great. 🙂

AspiringDoctor9, yes, I did find out my grade. I e-mailed my TA and he said I got an A+. That was some good news to brighten up my post-surgery day. 😀

The pain is kicking in, but I'm hanging in there. I watched Beauty and the Beast to take my mind off it. I got in a few hours of sleep, too. 😀

I hope everyone is doing well!

Hi guys!

Coz - Yay! You made a decision - congrats. I hope you like econ.

UCLA Student - That's great! I'm glad you had a good experience at UCR - a lotta people say bad things about it, but I don't think it's a bad place to be at all. Congrats on your A+.

Hi all-

climberchick and Jasmine (and Skaterbabe)-another checkered academic past here😎 We'll find a way! (But don't you love it when people see or hear about your past and immediately start treating you like an idiot?🙄 )

UCLAstudent-I haven't had my wisdom teeth out yet but I did have a tonsillectomy at age 20-I don't know if that's comparable in terms of pain but I went through six bottles of liquid codeine the first week, constantly had an ice pack tied around my throat, etc. Once it started healing, though, I was fine...(and NOT addicted to codeine, despite the pharmacist's warnings:laugh: ) I hope you're feeling better!

Cozmosis-Macroeconomics was pretty easy-it's all a matter of being able to read the various curves and graphs and know which way they'll go when conditions change....I hear you on sociology-DH is taking it and went to his first class last night and came home and said "yuck"...

Skaterbabe-Inconsiderate idiots! That's part of the reason we decided to buy a house-the owner of the complex I used to live in was really fond of renting to party people. Try and get some good sleep tonight! On the Anatomy book, we have the lab manual by Marieb, but a different textbook-go figure! Thanks for the website recommendation too-I'll have to check it out later...

Well, first day done. Anatomy is looking to be easy for now but will get hard really quick. Same thing with Pre-calc, we spent the class plotting points🙄 Chem lab got cancelled so I'm still in the dark there (I haven't been in a lab in 12 years so it ought to be interesting...) One good thing, though, our Anatomy prof told us that three out of the four books the bookstore said we needed aren't necessary. So I spent a few hours looking through them and sure enough, most of what's in them is duplicated in the lab manual (the one we need to keep). So I returned them and I think I'm going to order the Marieb textbook as a supplementary now that I have that money back 😀 I like the style of her lab manual...

OK, off to my first chem lecture...

Morning all!🙂

Midwest_turtle - Curves like that suck! I much prefer our 85 A- 70 B- etc system for chem classes hehe. Good luck! I'm sure you'll do fine.

Cozmosis - Congrats on the decision! Sounds like macro will make your semester much more bearable lol.😎

UCLAstudent - Congrats on that A+! Don't worry the pain will be better in a few days, just beware of pockets. Those hurt way more lol.

jenni - Ok ouch lol. I'm glad my tonsils never got that bad! Wisdom teeth definitely aren't that bad cuz your throat doesn't hurt too lol. As far as sleeping last nite - not really lol. My body rhythm was soo wacked again thanks to that so I slept maybe 3.5-4 hours...which will be fine, just not as fun lol. Most likely I'll get to sleep at a decent time tonite tho. These early mornings are a major pain 😉

The funny thing is that my landlord goes around extolling how quiet this bldg is when showing the apt directly under me. She's partially right. The bldg is divided into 3 entrances (4 apts on each end, and two in the middle.) My end is quiet, the other end is pretty quiet, it's the middle two that aren't lol. Although the upper apt has greatly improved. I think they've been getting too much of a taste of their own medicine hehe.

I'm not that surprised that your anatomy class doesn't use the Marieb text but does use the lab manual. The text is pretty dense and not a super easy read, but it does have several of those little hints of how to remember things and great pics so I loved it. This year the class here isn't using the Marieb text either just cuz it is soo dense. Don't know what book they are using tho. The only other book I made a lot of use of was McMinn's Atlas. Yeah everything is duplicated from the book and lab manual, but the pics are more "real" so they helped me with discerning muscles, brain skeletal features, nerves, and somewhat for veins/arteries (those are just hard regardless lol). I know I was one of the few who actually used that tho. Congrats on not needing half your books so you can get Marieb's tho! Good luck!

On the agenda today for me is Research Methods, Orgo lecture, and cell bio. Then I'm going to distill stuff for a couple hours while working on orgo problems, come home and review for a quiz in orgo tomorrow, and work on physics problems.

Have a good one all!
--Jessica, UCCS

Jenni, good luck with your first chem class today! 😉

Skaterbabe74, have fun in class today. Cell bio is interesting. 🙂

I am jealous of all of you that have classes. I want to go back to school.

My mouth is sore, but I'm not in terrible pain. One of my stitches came out yesterday, though. Does anyone know if this is okay?

hi
today i just started college with cellbio class, which only 2people tured up out of four, might have to take the class as an indepent class(..more studying on your own).teacher seems fine
I have been working in the bookstore an it really crazyyy in an tiny room on the bottom floor without any fresh coming in so it make really hot.
😡
UCLAstudent- congrats on your
Aspiring doc get better 😛

see you I'm going to the history II class.

So, I just got home from work. Another great day at the "office" I just love being in that scene!!! My OCHEM class went well last night. I just reviewed my notes on the bus ride home, and now Im going to set in a do some of the assigned questions. I'm really finding that doing the questions is what makes all the differnence, I'm really starting to understand this stuff!!!! 🙂

UCLA Student: Congrats on the A+, there's nothing like are great grade to cheer you up when you feeling sick. Hope you get better soon by the way. About your stitches, it shouldn't be a problem, i'd only start to worry if you start to bleed alot or something. Do you know what kind of stitches you have? sometimes they are meant to come out on their own, or dissolve away.

Skaterbabe: That's a real bummer about your noisy neighbors 🙁 But look on the upside, if you ever looking for a party you know where to find one!!! 🙂 J/K I feel for you. And good luck on your quiz tomorrow!!!

jenni: don't be fooled by anatomy. It's not difficult to understand, but there is a lot to know. Stay on top of it, and go to labs. Working on the cadavers is what really reinforced things into my mind. I didn't do great in anatomy, but the stuff I did know came from lab, I only wish I had actually taken up on the extra lab hours.

That's all for me,
check in later,
climberchick

climberchick: no, they aren't the dissolving kind of stitches. I'm going in on Tuesday to get them removed. I am feeling pretty good, so I'll just hold off until I go back to the dentist.

I hope everyone is having a nice day! Good luck to those who are at school. I'm curled up at home with a cup of soup and a bowl of Jell-O watching my favorite childhood tape. 😀 I'm hoping to be able to volunteer at the hospital on Friday.

skaterbabe74, I was looking at your profile and we have the same birthday! 😀 It's conveniently three days from the MCAT next year. 🙄

Hey all! 🙂

My day went well. Got another distillation done for the rest of my team. They now have probably about 1500 mL ethyl acetate to run columns with hehe. It rained most of the day tho which sucked for walking between classes lol. And I definitely don't like how my cell bio prof lectures. He's speeding thru all the chemistry stuff, assuming we all already know it, but gen bio never ever went into this much detail! He gives us quite a few hints about what will be on the tests but the stuff he's asking us to just blatantly memorize is enormous! And the exams will be short answer, drawing huge diagrams, drawing chemical structures etc. I'm gonna have to buckle down this weekend and try and figure some of this crap out lol. Also need to start some of my naming/molecular structure notecards for orgo. We have a quiz tomorrow, but it'll be all easy stuff....stuff from gen chem.

Wow Minx - talk about a small class lol. If we had that few students enrolled in something they'd cancel it without a second thought.

UCLAstudent - Wow...I don't think I've ever known anyone else who actually shared my bday lol. Course I'm quite a few years older than you but it's still cool! I didn't pay attention to the dates of the MCAT next april tho cuz I'm not taking it for another full year lol. And don't worry...classes will start up again before you know it 🙂

Anyway I'm off to do my physics homework and then I think I'm gonna crash relatively early tonite. Definitely didn't get enough sleep last nite lol. Later all!
--Jessica, UCCS

LOL Climberchick - Doing homework (and even unassigned homework) is always the way to understanding lol. I agree with ya tho...i'm getting the knack of naming and drawing organic molecules thanks to all the practice problems I've been doing lol.

Had my first orgo lab today. Went smoothly, except for the beginning where I wasn't on the class roster and had to get it sorted out. We did a recrystallization, pretty easy. Also, today was my first day sans Physics. Oh man was that nice!

Analytical class and lab tomorrow, working for an hour(hopefully not at all), then I get to take a shot at getting into Macro...shouldn't be a problem, as there are 18 spaces open, but its a once a week section, and I hope the professor isn't a dick about it.

Ravens/Steelers and Maryland/FSU this weekend. Yeah baby! Couldn't ask for a better sports weekend around here.

Hey everyone,

my day today was quite long, what with my attempts to catch up on my homework. I still feel behind. Tomorrow is just one class, though, so hopefully I'll be caught up by Friday. Speaking of which, it looks like my school's clubs and organizations (including fraternities and sororities) have started up advertising full force. I checked out the Philosophy club meeting today, first one of the semester, and there weren't that many people there. I guess there just aren't that many philosophy majors out there...

Anyway, math lecture today was typical. Professor lectures us, asks questions on what he explained, and then proceeded to well, make us (well make me anyway) feel like dim-wits 😛 It's all in good fun, though. I mean, it's only because people don't take the time to participate in class. It's understandable too, after all it's early in the morning.

I had a 4 hour break between math and Logic (no lab today), so I decided to stop by at the Quad where all the clubs were advertising. I met up with some SHPA officers and let them know that I'm still here 😀 At 11, I went to the Philosophy club meeting, and after that, I ate lunch and went into Logic class. I now realize that the material is B-O-R-I-N-G 🙄 The prof tries really hard to keep our attention, but it's so common-sensical. I wonder when we'll be getting to something HARD for a change.

Then came Greek Philosophy, where the prof rambled and tried to start up some discussion, but only like 4 of the students asked questions and made comments on the readings. I tried to join in, but then you can't really have a neat discussion going if there aren't that many people willing to participate. The professor told us that he didn't like standing there and lecturing all day. It is a Philosophy class, after all, and it's not much of one if there isn't much discussion on subjects.

If anyone wonders, I have enough time to do all that I said because I don't work. No job to go to, no money to worry about earning. Sorry for not responding to anyone's post this time around, but I did read each and every one of your posts. Hopefully I'll respond next time.

Current schedule for the week:

tomorrow Cell Bio lecture and 2nd quiz (I will do better this time 😛 )

Friday - Calculus then Cell Bio lab. For Cell Bio, I have to do some homework + I have to go and print out the lab...

SHPA first club first meeting of the semester...if anyone forgot, I'm on the Blood Drive Committee here...I'm hoping to run for Medical Chair at the end of the year

Biology Club first meeting of the semester...I'll just go here to check it out and see what it'll be about

(Friday night) Wu Shu Team training - Well, I need to get in-shape somehow, and so I guess I'll be goin' to these training sessions. Plus, if I make it on the team and get to go to tournaments, I'll be able to put that on my application forms...something to distinguish me 😎

Saturday afternoon Wu Shu Team training

Sunday - 7 a.m. - 11 a.m. first hospital shift of September, 4th hospital shift since I started; I'm expecting to be able to interact better with the Patient Care Assistants this time around and maybe work up the courage to go sit and talk with patients when I end up with nothing to do.

Skaterbabe74, good luck with all of the cell bio memorization. I know it's a pain right now, but if you put in the effort to learn it, you will retain at least some of it for the MCAT, and it will be easier to relearn what you have forgotten. 🙂

Cozmosis, good luck with classes today. 😀

Biodude, good luck on your quiz! 🙂

Wow, I guess I felt like spreading luck! So, today for me will probably be the same as yesterday. I get tired really easily from the surgery and need to nap every few hours. Oh, and I have been doing a lot of coloring in my anatomy coloring book. Does anyone else have this? It is amazingly detailed, and it is SO much fun if you're interested in art AND science.

Anatomy Coloring Book

Well, this quiz was better, but not by much. Now I only got one more that I can screw up on. Maybe it's my study habits. In any case, today wasn't much, just another Cell Bio lecture, this time on the cytoplasm. I'll have lab tomorrow. In fact, tomorrow will probably be my longest day for the semester so far, because of all the different club meetings I'll go to. Not to mention the workout I'll get when I swing by for the Wu Shu team's practice (7 to 9 p.m.)

By the way, everyone, don't be taking this the wrong way or anything, but expect me to pop in less frequently. For the sake of my grades, I'll have to restrict my web-surfing, and that includes SDN. I'll still read the posts, but I won't be able to respond to them all. I will not try to play favorites either. Later everyone, and I can understand if you may be suffering the same problems as I am.

Hey all! 🙂

Today was fun. I got out of orgo and physics labs early so I actually got home a bit earlier than usual today. woohoo! For orgo lab we did the boiling point and refractive index for an unknown. Turned out I had the same thing I've been distilling all week lol - ethyl acetate hehe. Then I had a quiz in orgo lecture. Think I got a high B on it but then I got 8/9 clicker questions right today so that's 25 points in my favor 🙂. In physics we went over all the "hard" problems for our homework due tomorrow so that'll be easy to finish up tonite, and then our physics lab took all of like 40 minutes lol. All we did was shoot a vacuum cart down an incline at 4 different angles and 4 different distances and time how long it took lol. Tonite I just have to finish my physics homework and then my bf and I are gonna go grocery shopping and hang out for awhile 🙂.

Biodude - With all you're trying to take on I don't blame you at all for cutting back on your web time lol. Sorry your cell bio quiz didn't go so well, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it....and good luck making the Wu Shu team!

UCLAstudent - Yeah I know it'll be useful for that, but this prof is not helping us at all. Half the time he tells us stuff wrong, or changes his mind about what he wants us to know. It's just really frustrating cuz he's not spending any time at all explaining any of the stuff in this chapter, and it's of course the foundation of all of it lol. Course the stuff he's having us memorize I don't think will really help with the MCAT all that much cuz it looks nothing like a "typical" representation of the whole ATP generation cycle. It's his own version with arrows going all over the place, and not effectively showing what generates what.

Later all!
--Jessica, UCCS

Today was pretty great. Had an analytical lecture on beginning statistics, worked in the CLC computer lab for a couple hours, had a really easy but boring analytical lab, and got into macroecon. Really cool teacher too.

I'm skipping organic tomorrow and my friend is covering for me so I can sleep in. Life is good

Skaterbabe74, good job on the quiz! I did that exact same lab for physics. 😀

Biodude, don't feel bad. We totally understand. Drop in when you can!

Today I'm feeling well enough to volunteer at the hospital for a few hours. I need to get out of the house.

<b>hi everyone</b> just finish my first week of School. yesterday i started history It went well I got I a good teacher which is nice.
my philosophy class was ok but it was the presentation and he read every word of the syllabus. it sound really interesting thought because he said he focus the themes on self-knowledge and aweresss as wego we will study the ancient philosophers already 30 pages to read.
In my O-chemm class we are two so they might cancel it due to the lack of students.
Psicology was a really fun 1st class ,he already sent us readings.

Uclastudent , yes i see what book you you mean , I have it in the library at my college.

See you,
🙂 😉

Maybe a buddy of mine from another site will stop by here.

He's another pre-med in IL.

Hey Everybody,

So first week of school's over...Hooray!!!

My reaction: My classes are going to be very time consuming, but enjoyable, this should be one of my better semesters in terms of my interest in the subject matter.

1. Physiology: Teacher said it straight out on the first day that his primary passion is research (yea..one of those), and that he was aksed to teach this course 6 yrs ago, so that's why he's doing it. I don't really care, i just wish he'd say a little less "umm" during lecture (those habit words/sounds really are annoying.) We started getting into some of the real stuff today with origins of the different parts in the animal body (like from ecto/meso/endo-derm) So i have this MWF. 4 exams at 200 pts each.

2. Physics: Algebra based, taught conceptually. The teacher's cool. He expects us to spend 6- 8 hrs on the HW alone, since we finish all the lab work during lab. He has problems like "How much is your share of next year's federal deficit?" The A in that class is a 77%+... yup...it's that rare 🙄 MWF

3. French: Teacher's cool, kind of quiet voice. Expects us to read the french newspaper online for 5hrs/wk, and summarize an article 3time/wk in our journals. We have a midterm and a final and a research project. T-TH

4. Communication class: This class is SO cool. It talks about gender roles. It's a lot of reading, but the discussions are so interesting. It's one of those classes where you go and talk bad about men and how long they've been putting women down. I didn't expect it to have such feminist undertones..but at least the teacher lets the guys in the class talk 😉 midterm/final/paper. I think it'll do me a lot of good b/c it exposes you to a lot of different kinds of literature, and the roles of women/men (all socio-economic status, background.) MWF

Haven't had any of my labs yet, all start next week. I received all the books i ordered online on time

Research: My prof's cool, i'll be doing 4hrs/wk for starters on t-th mornings. Hopefully i can come up with a project soon.

Work: will start working in our school clinic ~12hrs/week

Definitely a busy semester, but at least i will feel alive. Alright, i hope you guys are doing well. Let me go get some physiology reading done .

Take care!

Congrats, minx and DrSal, on finishing the first week of school! It sounds like you'll have some interesting classes. 🙂

I volunteered at the hospital today for 2.5 hours. Not much, I know, but I'm still recovering. 😀 I pretty much just hung out around the house after that. I started a new painting, watched TV, and played GameBoy. I am VERY ready for school to start. Three weeks left!

Hey all! 🙂

Today was a blah day for me. I woke up with a massive sinus headache so I emailed in to my stockroom job and slept for a few more hours. Then I got up and played literati for a bit and headed into school for physics lecture. Homework was due today or I probably would have skipped it and just rested all day since my allergies are being a real pain right now lol. After that I just came home, ate some dinner, and did my research methods reading for next week (a whole 10 pages hehe), and have been working on cell bio all nite. Think I'm starting to decipher some of the stuff our prof was lecturing on this week lol. Tomorrow I'll finish cell bio and finish my ch 2 problems for orgo, and then sunday i'll work on chapter 3 for orgo and physics, and mon and tues write my lab reports. That's the plan anyway lol.

Minx - I hope they let you keep ochem even with only 2 students. It would suck losing both that and doing cell bio independent study cuz of so few numbers...Glad you're enjoying history and psychology...sounds like philosophy should be interesting too!

Agent - We'll make your friend welcome if he decides to stop by 🙂

Congrats on making it thru your first week DrSal! Sounds like you'll have a fun but busy semester. 77% for an A in physics?!? Holy cow....and 6-8 hrs on homework alone? I spent maybe 3 doing mine lol. Alg based isn't supposed to be that hard! What's your prof thinking? lol...Sounds like you'll enjoy physio even if the prof isn't the best lecturer. French sounds kind of annoying to me having to write 3 summaries/week! Yuck! lol...Comm sounds fun tho! Your research and work experiences sound cool too 🙂. Gosh...I wish you luck getting thru this semester well!

Anyway have a good weekend all!
--Jessica, UCCS

Hey all, here's what happened today:

Calculus - the professor spent most of the lecture time answering peoples' questions, so he only had like 10 minutes to cover today's lecture. But it was pretty easy stuff anyway (), just that the homework he assigned is a lot to do. I still need to keep up on the homework assignments for this class.

Cell Bio Lab - I'm convinced that I have the nicest Lab TA/instructor in the world. She really takes the time to help us out and is super patient with us. When somebody at my table accidently spilled crystal violet (a stain used to identify nucleic acids and protein in cells), the TA wasn't mad. I tried to help out because I felt partly responsible (what with my setting the bottle over on that part of the table...) Lab ended way earlier than expected.

SHPA - first meeting of the semester, yippee! Well, today I got to meet some new people and reunited with old buddies from last year/semester. I also got to meet my oncology department coordinator again face-to-face. Boy, does she have a full plate! Coordinating the volunteers at HOAG, volunteering in the Labor and Delivery Department (Obstetrics) at HOAG, work, and school! Anyway...I got free pizza, so I couldn't complain. I decided to skip out on the Biology Club meeting because it would place too much of a burden on my schedule. I think staying with 3 or 4 clubs is enough for now (what with studying for Cell Bio, Calculus, Logic, and Greek Philosophy).

Wu Shu practice was at 7 p.m., a little later. Well, needless to say, my endurance level needs to be worked up. I can already feel my busted legs. They are going to really show their hatred of me tomorrow. I can tell. So now I am exhausted but at the same time feeling great!

For those who still don't know what Wu Shu is, go pop a Jet Li movie into your VCR or DVD player. That should clear things up real fast 😛

I've done this stuff before; it's still in my head, but my body needs to be re-conditioned to take the physical requirements of it to work.

UCLAstudent - hey, now, you've got a break, why don't you spend the next 3 weeks traveling? I know that's one thing I wished that I could have done during the past summer. But then again, you seem to have quite a bit on your plate there 😀

DrSal - Hey, I can beat ya there on the Physics grading. Remember that I took Psychology of Personality over the summer? An A in that class was 75% or higher. A grade of B is like 65% (which I suspect that I may have ended up with) or higher. A grade of D is like 30% according to that prof's grading. I empathize with ya. I hate professors who have to grade so hard. Other than that your week seems to have gone well. Hopefully your schedule will not overwhelm you.

agent - hey dude, why don't ya let your buddy in here? 😀

minx - so, which philosophy class are you taking? Ancient Philosophers eh? Your first week sounds fine. That sucks about O-Chem, hopefully they won't cancel it on you.

So for the weekend, I am going to:

-finish my homework by tomorrow

-study for all of my classes, especially Cell Bio (first exam coming up on Thursday)

-go to the second Wu Shu Club/Team practice tomorrow

-go to my fourth shift in the hospital on Sunday

That about covers it. Well, see y'all later people!

Biodude- i taking an intro course on philosophy , ancient greek philosophers

You guys have been busy!!

Well anyway just wanted to drop in and say hello to all the new "members". After my fiasco that is/was financial aid I managed to do okay. Not what I wanted but I'm okay with it.

In addition to that, an opportunity cam along for me to enroll in a pharm-tech program. So I decided, why not? Since I am interested in Clinical Pharmacy (I've always liked the idea about learning what a drug does to the body) and will prolly do research in the field (if not accepted to medschool), it seemed like a good idea. Altho from what I can tell most of my "learning" will actually be in the hospital setting.

I will be finished in a few months and still have time to take my full course load for the Spring. At this point it seems like it will be about 17-18 hours, which is okay because I will only be working part-time if at all.

The schedule I have has kept me pretty busy, but I think I like it that way. 😉 (I am also working 28 hours a week, with Mondays off.)

I think I was just really anxious to get some science in this semester because I didn't want to wind up with three labs in one semester.

(And YES!! I am taking out a loan for the next semester. Lesson learned. 😉 )

I sort of took a detour but I should wind up back home anyway. 😀

Hi all-it's been a strange and tiring week...

Last night our beloved puppy died. 🙁 He went outside at 3 when I got home, came in bouncing around begging for a treat, calmed down, laid on the floor, and went downhill really fast. By 6 he couldn't get up anymore so DH and I picked him up and held him across our laps, and at 7:30 that was it. But we were all with him at the end and holding him so he knew he was loved....

My son is taking it OK, my daughter is taking it hard. We're taking him out to my in-laws house this afternoon-that was his favorite place since it's out in the country and he could roam around as he pleased....

OK, moving back in time now....

My classes and professors are an interesting mix, to say the least-

Anatomy- Our prof is OK, he just introduces lab and lets us go. The cool thing is that there are 2 labs back to back on Tues and Thurs (8-10 and 10-12), and he'll let us stay for as long as we need to within that time. For lecture, tho, it's a case of writing notes for an hour straight. He covers a lot of stuff and expects us to know EVERYTHING he says. He does tape his lectures and keep them in the library, so that'll make it a little easier. Also, he informed us that he grades on a curve and only 10% will get an A. Probably b/c it's the weed-out class for nursing majors at our school🙄

Chemistry- This guy is Egyptian and VERY enthusiastic about the material-he was actually bouncing up and down yesterday and waving his arms around. 😱 After 2 classes, I've gotten used to his accent and can pretty much decipher what he's saying. The good thing is that for many years he was a prof at the main pre-med school in our state and he specifically said that he left and came here so that he could actually "teach" the students instead of having to run "weed-out" courses. He's a little dorky but really cool. Methinks I'm going to do concurrent enrollment at 2 campuses next year to take Organic with him. We haven't really covered much yet so I'm not sure of the difficulty of this course, but he hands out copies of his Powerpoint presentations so we just have to take supplemental notes.

Pre-Calc- OK, this is the third time in my life that I've learned this stuff and it's FINALLY clicking! My prof is a very laid-back woman who talks in a monotone, but she types up all the notes and such for each class and we just follow along and work problems with her-she's very good at explaining step-by-step and the reasons why you do a certain thing. This ought to be rather easy...

Medical Terminology- Weird is all I can say. It's a compressed video class so that took a little getting used to (the prof's at one campus and the students are at five others and all the video and sound's connected)...There apparently was a last-minute prof change so the RN we have didn't have time to prepare. We're having an exam every week, and she's going to "make it fun" for us. Bingo, spelling bees, various other games, etc. Our assignment for the first week was to come up with an original "medical" term to describe something-her example was "optical rectitis", meaning a ****ty outlook on life-she's that kind of prof.😛 I'm thinking "anal cephalectomy" for mine..whaddya think? The material pretty much duplicates anatomy class so it'll be reinforcement both ways-that's cool😀

OK, this got really long so I'll come back later for personal replies...

Hey all...

jenni4476 - that sucks about your puppy. I'll have more to say later on, hopefully...

2badr - Hey, that's pretty funny...thanks to my school's dumb class schedules, it looks like I will be taking 3 labs next semester (Genetics, G. Chem II, and Physics). That's 14 units already with 3 science classes 🙄 At least the Physics lab will only be one day a week. The Pharm-Tech program sounds cool, especially since you'll be doing Clinical Pharmacy with it. Well, that'll be something that you can do to see whether you like med or pharm more...

Funny about my legs. They aren't as sore as I expected them to be today. Well, I guess I'll have to go see tomorrow, since I have another practice today in the afternoon. Anyway, I am going to work on my homework now, so later everyone!

Mornin all!

jenni - I am sooo sorry your puppy's time came 🙁 . From the sound of it he had an ideal situtation though...playing in the afternoon, just a few hours of not so pleasant times. Sounds like your classes aren't too rough tho which is awesome! It's great that your anatomy lecture prof tapes all the lectures for you. We could tape ours but he didn't do it for us lol. We had an hour and a half of writing lightning speed notes lol, and everything was important lol. But once you get used to the pace it isn't soo bad. I hate curves like you have tho. Ours was a nursing weed-out class too, but he just made the exams hard instead of curving it lol. Your gen chem prof sounds cool. It always helps when the prof is enthusiastic about the subject 🙂. Congrats on precalc finally clicking for ya! That's definitely half the battle lol. It sounds like medical term will be a fun class anyway lol. I like your new word...what's your definition for it?

2badr - Sounds like you're getting a great opportunity! Short training, and a way to make a decent bit of cash while doing the school thing (or during summers at least)! I know you're not looking forward to 3 labs/week in the spring. I need to do 4 somehow in the spring lol. Thankfully I think they are all once/week labs which will help (which is 19 credits and will need an overload). At least you won't be the only one going nuts this spring lol.

Glad to hear your legs aren't too awful today Biodude lol.

Ok onto studying for me. Later all!

Thanks for the support Biodude and Skaterbabe-Fletcher did indeed have close to the ideal situation. The only thing better would have been to be able to put him to sleep at 6 as soon as it was evident that this was it but the vet's office was closed....so we did the next best thing, just reassured and comforted him.

It's just tough, though. I just got home from picking the kids up and all three of us half expected to see him at the window like always...we're kind of depressed right now.

Anyway-

Biodude-Hopefully your legs should be getting used to it by now...I know mine took about three weeks after I started ballet again. Hope your practice this afternoon goes well😀 BTW, don't worry about not posting so often-we all totally understand! If I didn't have kids and a husband, I'd be involved in that much stuff too-it's fun to have a hand in everything! My school doesn't have a pre-health professions club tho...

2badr-Congrats on the Pharm Tech program! I know what you mean about three labs in one semester-I tried to avoid it myself but unfortunately I can't next year...

Skaterbabe-I'm half thinking about taping the lectures myself anyway so that I can go through them at my leisure. Not to mention there's going to be 75 students competing for one tape in the library...My problem is that I like to think about things as he covers the material and that's impossible when you're writing at lightning speed (like you say). I hope your allergies are doing better-DH and I are suffering from them too. I still like the warm weather but I find myself praying for frost soon:laugh: And "anal cephalectomy" means basically "Get your head out of your a$$".

Which I'd like to say to some of the disruptive, immature freshmen at school (there's a group of five in pre-calc that won't stop talking and laughing and disrupting the class-guess they think it's just an extension of high school or something...the prof has about had it with them too, I hope they drop since they obviously don't want to be there)

minx-I hope your classes aren't cancelled😱 I would love to be in a class with only a few students-I had that for intermediate accounting and it was so much easier to learn since you could directly interact with the professor all the time...

DrSal-At least your A&P professor is only into research, mine made it clear that his first love is fish biology. His lack of enthusiasm for the human body shows....probably comes out to the same effect in the end anyway. And on the physics-all I can say is OUCH😱 You'll definitely be busy😀

UCLAstudent-I've only been in class one week and already your life sounds like a dream! I didn't have time to do any of that this week, but we did get a movie last night to take our minds off of puppy doggie. BTW, I checked out that anatomy coloring book on Amazon and it looked pretty cool so I ordered it. Thanks for the recommendation!

agent-I second (or third, or fourth) the motion-your friend will be more than welcome😀

Long again...oh well

Hi, everyone...

2badr, congratulations on the pharm-tech program. That sounds like a good opportunity for you! 🙂

jenni4476, I'm sorry to hear about your dog. I hope things pick up for you soon. Your Medical Terminology class sounds like fun! 😀

Biodude, I'm glad your legs aren't terribly sore. 😀

I hope classes are going well for everyone!

I'm watching my beloved Bruins play football right now... let's just say they aren't favored. 🙄

Hey all 🙂

Just a quick break to stop in and say hi. Finished my cell bio for the weekend. Still very worried about exams in that class but I don't have the first one of those until October. We have a little 10 pt quiz on the 15th but that's still a ways away anyway. After a few games of literati I'll be on to working on orgo. Scores from the first quiz went up today. Didn't do quite as good as I thought I did - got 17/25 (a C) but I still have an A- in the class at the moment lol so that's fine. I'll just have to kick butt on the exam on the 18th 😛 and my next 3 homeworks. Right now 2/3 of our class has a B+ or above but it's not like we've done anything particularly difficult yet either 😉.

jenni - I'm the same way. I prefer having time to breathe and let stuff sink in before moving onto something new in a lecture. Making your own tapes is probably a good idea. I like your definition of "anal cephalectomy" lol. I know exactly what you mean about "disruptive" freshman too lol. Luckily this year I have all upper division classes but I got that experience in my gen chem 1 class. Very annoying.....they'll either drop it or settle down after the first exam when they realize they actually do need to pay a bit of attention in class  . Hang in there!

Later all!

After today's practice, I'm sure that I busted my legs 😀 Now I go limping about. Well, that's what I get for jumping in after a long long while. Not much happened other than that, except that I didn't finish up my homework. Now I'm gonna have to go do it tomorrow after goin' to the hospital.

Skaterbabe74 - sounds like you have some problems with Organic Chemistry...is it really as hard as people make it out to be? 😛 I hope you do well on the next exam for that class...

jenni4476 - I hope that you will get over the death of your beloved puppy. I know just how it feels to lose a loved one like that...took me a long while to get over losing my father.

Today I woke up in the best mood, untill I saw my roommate who made me feel like **** about something I had no reason to feel like **** about. I've been in the slums ever since. In the reverse situation, I would have been, and have been in the past, completely understanding. I'm just so annoyed with right now, and I needed to vent... I mean really, she's acting like a child.

Well, at least I got in some much needed Ochem review, I've got a little quiz on tuesday... i know it's not worth much, but it all adds up!!!

Hey all,

Been pretty busy with soccer- we beat Depauw and a small college called Westminster (famous for Winston Churchill's Iron Curtain speech).

So happy to have orgo done with... i only wish physics would go away. But this semester is already looking much better than the previous two. I have a GREAT apartment; it's really a wonderful haven. I think I'm gonna work two jobs, and I'm already freakin out. But I really want to get into this neurosurgery lab- and i got in- but i barely have any time. Oh the story of a premed life.

anyway, off to bed, practice tomorrow.

jenni, even tho I'm not an animal person, I cannot help but feel so sad for you.🙁 It sounds sad to be looking for him but you know he's not there. 🙁 I hope you and your family feel better soon.

Best wishes and {{{hugs}}}}.

Thank you to all the well-wishers! I really appreciate it. It's not that difficult of a course (thank goodnes!😉 ) and there seems to be so many interesting things to learn.

When I read the syllabus for the class, I was pretty convinced it would be fun. We have medical terminology (pretty easy) and one I'm sooooo looking forward to is the chemistry of drugs.😀 It'll just be basic molecular structures of drugs but it sounds cool. I just felt I'd lose my mind if I couldn't do something related to healthcare. 😀

Hi agent!!

Biodude - don't overdo it! You seem to have your plate pretty full.🙂

Skaterbabe - take good notes and be prepared to be a tutor!

UCLA - glad to see you dropping in. 😉 how'd the game go??

minx - gald to see you've survived the first week.

I will know my schedule for next semester soon. (I plan to register early). Anybody feeling a little excited about this process? (Okay I guess I am because I have yet to be corrupted with the beast that is the MCAT.) 😉 The class of 2006 seems like a cool bunch!

I hope the semester is really good to all of us! 🙂

Biodude - sorry to hear you're feeling the pain today lol. As far as problems with ochem I don't think I am. I was figuring I got like a 19 or 20 so I only missed a few more points than that. I'll find out monday probably where I missed the other points. So far the hardest thing is figuring out how to number the carbons so you'll name the compound right lol. And no so far it's really not as hard as people make it out to be, but you definitely have to know some of your gen chem well. It's not the math stuff so much as trends and concepts. You need to know Lewis structures, electronegativity, formal charges, geometry, polarity, isomers, both bonding theories, and both acid-base theories well, and it's definitely easy to make stupid mistakes on things like that lol which is what I most likely did. Anyway I'm still not worried about it. I generally will do the worst on a first quiz/test and then get into the swing of things and do fine.

Climberchick - sorry to hear you had "one of those days" lol. Don't worry bout it tho. I'm sure your roomie will be fine, and we all get like that occasionally lol. Good luck on your ochem quiz. If you want (and this goes for anyone doing ochem now) you can check out our website for the class. The prof posts all the old quizzes and exams, and our answers for the first quiz are already up (i assume you'll have some nomenclature on your first one since you're taking it later than we did, but the old quizzes might be helpful). All you have to do is go to http://www.uccs.edu click on academics, page down and click on chemistry, click on current web courses, and look for the one labeled Chem 331-001 Organic Chemistry I, section 1 Anderson. That's my class. He's also got his powerpoints on there too. The only thing you won't be able to access is the link that says WebCT which has our homework and grades in it.

Wash - There you are lol! Sorry to hear you're disliking physics but at least you're almost done with prereqs! Congrats on beating DePauw and Westminster and getting into the neuro lab! That sounds like a great opportunity!

2badr - lol I'll do my best on the notes thing hehe...but the nice thing is that anybody can access those notes (for the most part - we add bits and pieces here and there in class) on my school's website. There's usually at least one section of ochem with full powerpoint lecture notes up each semester lol (not always the same prof - the 2 ochem profs trade off years, but both are really good and this term we have a 3rd one teaching one section). Have fun with your pharm tech stuff! As far as enjoying and being excited by this whole process for the most part I still am. I'm feeling a bit of stress this semester but not cuz of prereqs so much as from needing to get the straight A's to get the override i'll need next semester so I can take the classes I really need to take next semester lol. I'm trying hard to not stress too much about it since I know if I do that I'm bound to set myself up for failure, but it's definitely in the back of my head. It's also a goal that I haven't achieved yet so it'll be awesome if I can (and I will) do it.

I'm off too bed (about halfway thru harry potter 5 hehe, my bf got me hooked with his books on tape...now he's borrowing the first couple of the books to read himself rather than listen to. He's dyslexic so the books on tape are really helpful for him for enjoying lit, but these are pretty easy reading so he'll slowly work thru them lol).

Nite all!

I haven't read through this thread so this may be out of context, but I am going to post this anyway. You ever notice you have to wait until your senior year in college until you can take classes that are really interesting to you? The classes I am taking this semester are as follows:

Higher Vertebrates
Neurobiology
Cognitive Psychology
Forensic Psychology
Ethics for a Healthcare Professional

My school also offers a Forensic Pathology class at the graduate level in the criminal justice department that I am excited about taking in the spring semester. School is so much better when you take classes that are actually something you are interested in.

You are so right! I noticed that at the graduate level we will be able to take some classes at the local medical school here.

Your schedule sounds great, especially Forensic Pathology. There is so much you can learn about the human body when you have to learn why it isn't/didn't function at its normal healthy level.

Courses such as forensic pathology microbiolgy, pharmacology/pharmaceutics, clinical science or any of the "investigative" sciences lend such a broad base of knowledge to reference to later in your graduate and or professinal studies.

Good luck with your classes! 🙂

Hey all, I'm in a much better mood today as everything is back to normal around here. I'm actually taking OCHEM 2 so my first quiz is on alcohols and phenols. I wish I had taken the first ochem over again just because it's been so long, I feel like I'm relearning this stuff for the first time... but I'm getting through it.

Jenni- Im sorry to read about your beloved pup. I'm sure he had a wonderfull life with your family. Don't worry to much about your daughter, she'll brigthen up soon enough. My little sisters puppy died last year and she was devasted, but everything turned out fine in the end. She's even thinking of getting another little pup, something she couldn't even concieve when jumper first died.

Skaterbabe- sorry to here your first test didn't go as well as planned. But your right, it is really easy to make simple mistakes in ochem that can cost you a lot. Just keep up the hard work and Im sure everything will turn out great in the end.

UCLAstudent - GO BRUINS!!!!

Biodude - so your a martial arts king?!? I dabbled a bit with karate, but I hated getting all bruised to the point where it was looking like my bf was abusing me. SO I gave it up. But it was great physical exercise. I picked up climbing a few years back, great workout both mentally and physically, minus the abundant bumps and bruises (although some may beg to differ after looking a my knees and elbows, but atleast their not so visible!!)

Talk to you all later,
climber

Hey all!

Welcome ForensicPath!! Sounds like you're gonna have a fun year 🙂. And you're right, my senior year will be the only time I have any free time in my schedule to take fun stuff lol. I can't wait!

Climberchick - Glad to hear you're having a better day today 🙂. Oh and there is an Organic Chem II link for our school too. That's Chem 332-001 Schoffstall (it's actually an online course so you may have access to more stuff then you would thru our web-augmented ones).

As for me I'm kind of having a lazy day lol. Finished reading my physics chapter, checked out some of my textbooks websites (some of which will come in handy next weekend when I start studying for my tests that week), watched the broncos/browns games - denver kicked a#$ 😀 , read my organic chapter which will definitely take some time to sink in (we're getting into conformations now which are bit more of a pain in the butt lol). Think I'll switch to doing some of my writeups instead of doing other stuff today. Too blah to think hard lol.

Hope everyone is having a good Sunday!

What a horribly sucky weekend. Don't feel like going into it, but its just been terrible.

Well, tomorrow I have Orgo at 11, and assorted work until 6:30. I also have to drop off my add/drop form, and return my Physics book, and buy the Macroecon book. Should be a smooth day.

Hi everyone,
yes i'm still alive. Mondays&wed are really nice cause i sdon't have class till 15.30.
I have been offer a few more of work-study with the head of Science and Engeneering and the compter dept to some data typing so together with the aedmission job it makes ten hours /week.I seems that we are going on with the O-chem.

I see must of us are taking o-chem,either one or two .Skaterbabe thanks for that link by the way in my school some prof also use WbCt. By the way Jessica don't worry too much about your first test,o-chem needs lots of practice.
Jenni- sorry about the puppy🙁 . you and yor family will get over soon. When my dog died of old age (he was14 in dog years) were were really really sad and missed him and didn't want another dog but know we have our puppy keiko which fills the house again.
2brad- schedule sounds amazing.

Now how read Harry Potter 5th edition. I read it this summer it was nice i liked it.

Hi all... I don't have time to respond to all of the posts. I will do so when I get home. I'm on my way to volunteer at the hospital. 🙂 Yesterday was fun. I went to Disneyland for a few hours with my mom. We have annual passes, so we get to go a lot. 😀

Wow, this is short. I'll write more/respond to new posts when I get home.

Hmm...I'm gone for one day and then there's a barrage of posts here! 😀

Well, I can't really respond to anyone in particular, but I did notice that all of the interesting college classes are upper-division as well. I can't delve deep into anatomy, physiology, or ethics until I've finished up the lower-division requirements. At least I'll be done with all of my General Education classes (that freshmen/sophomores are allowed to take) by the time this semester is over with.

My legs aren't doing much better today, and Saturday's workout was worse than Friday's because that made me sore all over...arms (push-ups), abs (sit-ups and leg lifts), legs (kicks, stances, shifting stances), and well, my shoulders always hurt 😛 I'm really out of shape, as you can all very well tell. I need to do some jogging to build up my endurance and some weightlifting to get some of my muscle back.

Today is Monday, a long day, but at least I've got a long break. I've got math homework to do (due by next Monday), Logic homework to finish up (due this afternoon) and a reading to do for Greek Philosophy (also this afternoon).

Yesterday was my fourth go-around as a Clinical Care Extender at HOAG Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. Yesterday's patients seemed to be ones that I could hold conversations with and I cracked a few jokes, but then mornings are always busy. The day started when I was paired up with a Patient Care Assistant who didn't know what I was capable of doing. Which was nice, considering the condition my body was in (see above). Of course, right around 10 a.m. I ended up following another PCA who had some insane (in terms of demands) patients. She had overweight patients, spoiled brat patients, and patients whose family members were complete jerks 😡 An overweight patient...well, a single nurse obviously can't handle moving them...as for spoiled people, I detest it when they're too lazy to do something and start treating you like a slave; then there was this one patient whose daughter went in for a "visit." Some visit! That young lady was so lazy that she sat down and read a magazine the entire time, always asking things like, "My (parent) needs (insert something that she could get herself) right now. Would you please go and fetch it?"

Okay, so that didn't sound so good up there, but I mean, it was good to be up and doing stuff after a while of sitting down. But there were too many demands made of me...first, I found a patient who needed some cups for his drinks (he wasn't allowed to get out of the bed, obviously), so I went...the PCA told me to grab some ice water for the patient in room 19. Going to get some ice water and cups...then suddenly another PCA comes in and needs my help in moving another patient...um, ok...then the first PCA comes back and needs me to fill up a basin completely with ice also for room 19. One thing at a time, I say to myself, and zip off to do just that...then a visitor comes in and asks me to get some syrup for another patient's breakfast pancakes...going to do that...then a nurse comes in and tells me to grab a container from the pathology lab downstairs...

I managed to get all of the tasks done, though I did keep all of those people waiting 😀

Hey all!

Ok I'm officially sick. Been coughing and stuffed up all weekend. Suffice it to say I got almost no studying done yesterday lol.

I'm not gonna make a ton of comments today...want to go back to bed, but I wanted to say that I'm sooo NOT worried about O chem at this point. It was a lousy 25 point quiz and I still have an A- in the class. I appreciate the support but I really am not worried about it in the least.....i always do the worst on the first quiz/exam....

Hope things are going well for everyone else.

I'm going back to bed lol.
