The Underdog Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i know I should be happy with 3 interviews but I didn't hear back from DMU yesterday (31st day) and it was the day they sent out interview invites for people that were complete first week of september! so now I'm i'm anticipating that rejection letter in the mail box anyday now.

I'm getting in this thread because I feel that I should be in it.

Here is my stats

3.66/3.45 science.. 29 MCAT (I took it twice and got 29P both times..) AACOMAS
Before you go crazy about it.

I could only apply to 4 DO schools this year because I do not have any doc recommendation letters. I shadowed numerous docs in the ER where I volunteered/trained as EMT-B but I never knew to ask for a recommendation letter. Also, a lot of DO schools require DO letters 🙁

so hopefully TCOM/PCOM x 2 and NECOM show me some love.

I also applied to NYCOM (but i feel that the cost of living on Staten island might be too much for me to handle), I applied to New jersey college of osteopathic med as well, but never got a 2ndary from them lol..

Accepted to CCOM! Omg I'm so happy right now. 🙂 🙂 🙂

I'm not sure that fact alone makes you an underdog since you can always apply next year and rock the application process 😀

WOW, Congratssssssssss!

Dban, why the underdog spread sheet is not being updated? I wanna see how my fellow underdogs are doing since I will be one next cycle. Will there be a thread like this for next cycle?

I'm not on here enough anymore to constantly update. I don't have the time to search all teh school threads, etc. I told people to PM me with updates to the spreadsheet. When I made it I had alot of time off. This week (its thursday night right?) I've already worked 55 hours, have an 8 hour shift tomorrow and have my one day off to go to visit some friends on Saturday. So ya... PM me and I'll update it, otherwise its getting difficult to keep up. I update when I can and most of what is posted in here was updated.

Although my grades are above average as well as my MCAT i consider myself an underdog because of a few mistakes I had made in my past. I had a few run ins with the law as a high school student and my first year in college. I know there are others like me I just want you all to know if its your dream it can happen you just gotta keep trying and be completely honest. Although its my first time applying DO, I applied to medical schools for three years straight and didn't even get an interview. I am finally accepted and am so happy. Congrats to all the underdogs, the truth is your going to be the best docs because you want it the most. 👍

I wasn't made an underdog for some reason but here are my stats

3.37 cGPA 3.10 sGPA and 27O MCAT

Just accepted to PCOM.

You can dooooooo eeeeet

which campus?
I am waiting for my interview invite from pcom. hpe they offer me one.

Followed this thread for a while, but never actually posted. Definitely an underdog though, 3.01 sGPA, 3.21 cGPA, 29M MCAT. Interview invites to PCOM-GA and NSU-COM. Just got accepted to NSU today, PCOM-GA interview on 10/18. It definitely is possible.

Seems like the underdogs are doing pretty well with their interview invites and acceptances!

Way to go guys! And for those of you still waiting, don't forget, it's just the beginning of October. Plenty of time left.

congrats.
all the best for the nest interview

hey guys
first off, congrats to everyone who has gotten interviews and to those who have been accepted. Gotta be a great feeling.

I don't believe I have posted in this thread yet, so I was hoping I could post my basic stats, and hopefully get some reassurance.

I an a non-trad (31 years old)
cumm gpa: 3.56
science gpa: 3.75
Mcat: 27Q
Avg EC's and Great LOR's

I just got my secondaries in about weeks ago and have yet to hear anything back. I applied to about 15 DO schools and I am just terrified that I won't get any interviews. From looking through this thread, it SEEMS like my stats are good enough for me to get several interviews...but I am of course terrified that this won't be the case.

So first off, do you guys expect I will get multiple interview invites.
And second, when do you think I should start to hear, bearing in mind I got my secondaries and LOR's in about 2 weeks ago.

Thanks, and congrats again to everyone who has heard good news, and hang in there to everyone who is still waiting.

Welcome! you have very good stats so don't stress, we are in the peak of medschool app season so schools are extra busy! you will hear back from most of the schools you applied to within 4 to 6 weeks.

Thanks for the kind words.
By the way, here is my list of schools:

AZCOM
CCOM
Des Moines COM
PCOM Georgia
LECOM Bradenton
LECOM PA
NYIT
NOVA
PCOM PA
Touro NY
Touro NV
Touro CA
UMDNJ (I am a NJ resident)
UNECOM

I have a few other secondaries that I am debating whether or not I want to submit. I already sent in 14 and I am just hoping that with the stats I gave, that the 14 I applied to will be enough.

well just got another rejection in the mail today. KCOM, this one really hurts, I loved the school and I shadowed a DO who graduated there back in the 70's. didnt even invite me for an interview.

I also called WCU COM to see what was going on. appearantly not everyone got secondaries this year. DESPITE it bieng listed in the CIB that everyone did. If I had known they were going to screen I would have never applied to that school as I am hoping my lor's and secondaries really help my app out. They also have a huge regional selection. I am going to consider this one a silent rejection because I have not yet gotten a letter but the lady pretty much told me over the phone.

It's not going so great for all the underdogs, 3.0 scie 3.2 overall 25 mcat has 4 rejections and still waiting on 10 schools but this still sux as I have 0 interview invites so far

I knew my sci gpa was gonna hurt me, but I never thought it would be this bad. I have a significant upward trend from a 2.0 sgpa to a 3.0 via retaking classes and taking several upper level science courses. took me almost 3 years. still retaking classes currently.

dmu com rejected pre secondary
wcu rejected pre secondary
lecom bradenten rejected pre interview
kcom rejected pre interview

i really hope pcom and umdnj show me a lot of loving

Keep your head up dude, the application cycle is far from over 🙂

That sucks dude, I have similar stats (3.1 gpa, 30 MCAT). I am in similar situation:

DMU - rejected pre secondary
LECOM B - rejected pre interview
WVCOM - rejected pre secondary
AZCOM - Hold pre-interview
VCOM - Hold pre-interview ( specifically waiting for OChem retake, wont be done till Dec so Im done at VCOM)

Waiting to hear back from Western, CCOM, KCOM, both PCOMs
Have to finish secondary at UNE, PCSOM, and NSU (LOR). Probably wont do NSU since well below GPA

Interview at Touro-NY which really isnt impressive considering stats required for it

Just wanted u to see where someone with similar stats is. Good luck dude

I two 14 hrs shift, reserved hotels, airline tickets, so productive and financially draining weekend for me? you?

Dude, that's intense 😱 What do you do? When/where is your next interview?

It was pretty good, a lot of celebrating haha. The gf took me to a nice restaurant in LA on Friday, and I met up with a bunch of my friends on Saturday for drinks 🙂

I have a question for most of you guys (sinfest, HockeyDr, DbDan, MegaThunder), when your gpa is posted, is that your UGrad GPA and then you guys have gone on to do a masters or SMP? Just wondering cuz the UnderDogs are doing sooo well and I have got very little love yet I have a ton of experience. So im not sure if you guys have scored high GPAs in grad programs or something

Basically I am trying to find a way for hope😛

yeah I work in the ER/ICU and for some reason this weekend was insane at the hospital! no idea why! I've got LecomB next week and kcom and kcumb two weeks after that! man if I was in your position I would still be drunk!

What's posted for me is pretty much my undergrad sGPA. I took two semesters worth of classes at a CC after graduating, which boosted my GPA a little.

Oh, and replying to your other post, I think you should just submit your secondary to NSU-COM. My GPA is pretty low, yet I was accepted somehow. Just keep your head up 🙂

Long hours, but it must be pretty interesting/exciting man. Good luck at your interviews, I'm sure you'll rock it!

You WILL be in my position, and I'm going to hold you to that! All of us socal SDNer's should meet up for drinks sometime after the app cycle is over

That actually would be very awsome! I am totally down!

r

Thanks for the positive reinforcement🙂. The problem is that my non-science LOR cant write me one for another 2 weeks. I just feel like im SOOO far behind everyone else and considering my stats are so low, I feel like its too late. When were you complete? Quite a while ago I assume. The people I see getting interviews there have like 3.5+ and 30 MCAT lol

2 weeks is nothing, just submit it! You've already spent money on submitting a primary there, so what's another $50?

My supplemental was received on 8/10, and my LOR's were received on 8/16.

I wonder if Mega and Dan would be down

Actually, I wonder if they even visit this thread anymore since they're technically not underdogs 😛 haha

Seriously, this thread has died

How was everybody's weekend?

Mine was good dude, watched the game on Saturday and hung out with some family on Sunday. Pretty relaxed.

You know, I think what saved a lot of us was we applied really early. I only have an undergrad GPA, didn't take any classes after I graduated. Just stick with it and keep your spirits up.

I'm way down. That would be a great way to celebrate among people who've actually gone through this process together (literally) instead of just with family/friends.

I think with the general slowing of the whole board I've reduced my activity as well lol. I still check in multiple times a day though, it's just that there's not much to post about application-wise any more. Unless I get any more interviews I'm pretty much done with application season since there's only one school I'm waiting on a decision from.

Seriously, this thread has died

How was everybody's weekend?

Lousy, Michigan lost and it was 100% embarrassing, ugh.

Haven't been on a lot recently because my radiology class is kicking my ass after missing 4 lectures because of interviews haha, so I'm playing catch-up with that and working on posters/abstracts/paper for my research project that I'm presenting in November (and hoping to present at some other conferences in the winter/spring).

Also, HockeyDoc my thing on the front page says I was accepted to KCOM but I didn't apply there lol, my acceptances are LECOM-B, RVUCOM, CCOM and AZCOM

so, I got my scores back today: 09VR,06PS(whaa?),08BS: 23P
overall, better than my previous attempt 06VR,07PS,08BS: 21Q

again, still much lower than my AAMC averages, but I am glad for the score to go somewhat up. Makes no sense because I focused on PS much more than last time. Oh well.

Still hoping to squeak by with my cgpa 3.84 and 3.85 sgpa. We shall see. :xf:

I'm late to the game but I'd like to be included in this thread.

Here are my stats:

sGPA: 2.8
MCAT: 30 (7 PS, 11 VR, 12BS)
Excellent letters (including DO and several MD's)
Excellent EC's

Interested in:

SOMA
AZCOM
CCOM
PNWU
Western COM
NSU COM
P-COM GA
LE-COM
KCOM
LMU-DCOM

I'm late getting my primaries in because I've been out of the country doing Medical Humanitarian work (In East Timor and Indonesia) and haven't had access to the net to get things done. Hopefully I'm not too late.

Wish me luck!

my stats are definitely lower than those numbers and i was fortunate enough to get an acceptance and several interviews. no grad school for me. I'm sure you'll do fine.

i think this definitely helped. ever since application season went into full swing (meaning not considered early in the cycle anymore), I've had only one good news and the rest rejections/waitlists

accepted!! (3.2 29s)

congrats! where at??

I wonder if Mega and Dan would be down

I'm definitely down. 👍

In other news... just when I thought that AZCOM had emerged all but victorious a new and exciting challenger emerges....

Western interview invite!!!!! :soexcited:
