The Underdog Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm a non-trad student, post-bac student with 2.92 cGPA 3.73 sGPA (straight As for pre-med, post-bac work)
MCAT - 22K, yeah I know, I messed up on this test, couldn't sleep the night before, drove 3 hours to take the test, I suck
215 hours volunteer in hospitals and schools, 60 hours research on neuro, 100+ hour shadowing DOs in various fields, work full time

Sent my aacomas to be verified last week, can't sleep, need to get an interview...It's going to be a long few weeks...my chances are very dim, if any

Applied to the 4 DO school nearest the panhandle, any other schools I might have a chance? (low on funds so need to choose carefully)

Hope I get an interview..need to get some sleep!

we might be the same person! seriously though...i have 1 interview so far. Good luck!

Hey Everyone!

Sorry I have not been around, just been really busy lately. The front page has been updated to the best of my ability, the HTML coding is getting a little ridiculous the navigate through . Dbdan was smart enough to use an excel sheet to circumvent the massive cluster. Good thing I am working with a 32" monitor 😀. Congrats to everyone, I never thought this thread would survive this long and grow this enormous. There are so many awesome stories in here, it's incredible. I never would have believed I would be attending medical school next year (in fact, I still don't believe it. I'm still waiting for the infamous "Oops, we didn't mean to accept you, our bad" letter). Regardless, now that it as all set in, i'd like to thank everyone that gave me support throughout this thread.

P.S. Where are my LECOM-E'ers at?

the front page looks so busy! makes me happy 🙂 yay underdogs! 👍

your response could have been a little nicer, i mean cmon he knows he did not do well on the mcat but i don't think he needs to here that his science gpa would have gotten him interviews had he not "blown" the mcat. i do like how you ended it with coming back stronger just wish you could have worded it a little differently like "your science gpa could have gotten you interviews if you had done better on the mcat" or your science gpa could have gotten you interviews if you didn't do as bad as you did" would even be a little better. just a little tip triage.cause i like ya
I've never been good at wording things nicely. Somewhere along the line I just stopped trying.

Too bad my list is horrendously out of date  I'll have to go back and update it one of these days when I have time. I've got 11 straight work nights this week. FML

haha, I feel ya dude! I can't wait for next year when I can quit and start medschool!

Congratulations on all the acceptances thus far. This board has long been a source of discouragement for many people who aren't 'perfect.' I think you can attribute it to the competitive nature of pre-professional programs and the insecurity it can attract + internet anonymity. Looking at the stats for allopathic schools, it's easy to see that a significant percentage of people do get in, even with less than stellar academic records.

Please add me to the list!!

I just sent in apps and am applying to all of the DO colleges. Here are the stats:

29 years old, M

Cum: 2.84
sGPA: 3.3

MCAT: 28M, 10PS/9VR/9BS

My cGPA is low because I spent 6 years floundering through college with a really poor GPA, like lots of F's/W/ etc...

List of EC's:

800 hours volunteer experience in Critical Care at level 1 trauma center
3 Years of CNA experience/monitor tech
1 published research paper, primary author
Musician for 13 years
Owned a production company and travelled all over the southeast
camp counselor for disabled children

well cudos for trying.
26R mcat and 3.78 GPA....submitted 8 secondaries at the end of september and still no interview invites...getting really anxious. i just having one interview will make me feel better!

any advice?
nope, im still waiting, although i wish i had your gpa

Interview invite today from DMU! Sooooo pumped and honestly shocked!🙂 This cycle is going amazingly well for me and hopefully I can ace several of these interviews coming up!

And to think of all the people who told me I wouldn't stand a chance with my 23 MCAT.....

Thanks everyone for the support in this thread! I am proud of all of us!

candy cane that is so awsome man. dmu was one of my top choices but i was rejected pre secondary lol. happy for you brother

Thanks!!! I'm really excited, but most of all THANKFUL! RVU in beautiful Colorado is the school. I'm flying out of SoCal in 2 hours though for Touro-CA. I feel so relieved to have an acceptance under my belt.

:biglove:

Yay it works now!! Good luck!! and congrats again

im assuming you have some thinking to do then? i know you live in cali and have an acceptance to nova 2? what are you thinking of doing?

Yep, it's a choice between Nova and Touro. I'm not really sure what to do...I feel like Nova is the much better school, but Touro is close to family/friends/gf. The main thing that makes me not want to choose Touro is that I've heard they don't have solid rotation sites. On the other hand, I would most likely complete all of my rotations somewhere in CA if I go to Touro, so maybe that would help me match somewhere in CA four years from now.

Help me out fellow Underdogs :hello:

edit: Are you going to attend UMDNJ's grad school Dr. Yiot?

Hopefully this helps, but after talking to a close friend who happens to be a recent Touro-Ca alum, I decided to not send in the deposit to Touro and to instead pick Nova ( subsequently I got into my first choice school Western, so that's where my deposit will be going, but I LOVED Nova).

Her advice all came down to rotations. She has a great job in a competitive ROADS specialty, but complained that

1) Touro does not help enough with rotations. She was left somewhat on her own in planning out housing, where to go, where she'd be, etc.

2) Rotations are getting better, and Arrowhead is amazing, but most students get stuck in a lot of crappy rotations.

I liked the school and would love going there, and I want to end up in CA, but I think only about half of Touro-CA students do all their rotations in California, which took away from the selling point. I'd be happy to go there, but I think if you have other options that you like, to seek those out.

Thanks for the great advice, and congrats on getting accepted to Western!

I know NSU is the better school. They have a solid rotations network, they are much more established, etc. But the thought of leaving CA for at least four years makes it a tough choice. 😳

It feels like I have a tug of war going on in my head right now. The sensible side is telling me to attend NSU, but my emotional side is telling me to attend Touro.

I can totally relate but I think as tough as it will be initially it will end up being a nice change

Accepted to Western! :hello:

My family and friends think I'm crazy but I'm going to stick with KCUMB. Hopefully going out of state won't bite me in the rear later.

you only get one shot at your medical education.

Way to make the choice more difficult...haha jk

Change would be nice...ughhhhhhhhhh I don't know...

Accepted to Western! :hello:

My family and friends think I'm crazy for wanting to leave socal but I'm going to stick with KCUMB. Hopefully going out of state won't bite me in the rear later on for getting a residency/practicing in CA.

Congrats man, I had no doubt you'd get accepted 😉

I'm sure you and Wolverine will have a blast at KCUMB next year

Given my current GPA I'm under the impression I will be posting here in two years.

I wanted to say congratulations to those who got accepted! It must feel great, I'm sure they accepted you for a reason =)

For those that haven't had an acceptance yet, I wish for you the best.

im gonna start it. school starts january 3rd. im gonna commute the first semester. about 90 minutes 1 way. but hopefully i hear from a school this spring. i def. am a fan of rural areas and the location of umdnj som isn't ideal for my family and i but the faculty, staff and most importantly ...students seemed so happy and acted like a family. thats what made it a top choice and why i decided to do this program. although if i get into lmu in the spring ill be happy also.
as for your decision. would your gf be moving with you? that means a lot. i think your gonna have to be a little specific here. nova is the better school. but more often than not, med school is what you make of it and its always nice to have a support system with you. if it was me i would go with nova, and im sure a lot of people here will tell you the same. but only you know your situation and all the details that come with it. your faced with a touch situation but never forget its a good situation to be in. good luck man

That commute is going to be killer, but hopefully you get in this cycle. Worst case, at least you're doing something to make you a more competitive applicant next cycle. Good luck 👍

Unfortunately, no, she's not moving with me. She will have one or two quarters left in school when I leave, and she's applying to med school for a spot in the class of 2016. That's why it would be nice to stay relatively close to Southern CA.

I agree, med school is what you make of it. There are things Nova has that Touro doesn't (nice campus, resources that come with having a well-funded program, etc), but I'm fine with missing out on those. I think the biggest thing I'm worried about is rotations. Anyways, thanks for the good wishes, and good luck to you too 👍

if i don't here back from schools ill already be in the program and this summer i will move down closer to umdnj. if i get in then ill drop the program and move wherever i get in. thats such a touch call man. esp since shes applying to med school 2. gosh i can't imagine. id still go to nova. lmao. go to nova. they seem to have solid rotations. ditch the chick. jk

on a side note what if she only gets into other schools 2. lets say you go to touro and then she only gets accepted to wvsom or pcsom or something.

Wow, I really like this thread. I think this is what SDN should be about, encouragement. And I completely agree about the 3.9 GPA people saying they're worried about getting in. It made me feel like crap for awhile and I actually stopped logging on for sometime. I'm really glad I found this thread and I'll be on it frequently.

Much love to my fellow underdogs applying for fall of 2012.

 I've never been the type to stay with one girl for a long period of time, but she's different 😳

I'd like to keep it going, but who knows...my future is the most important thing. Good point about her going to a different school, but she's only part of the reason I want to stay in CA. I have family and friends here, I want to practice here, etc.

ding ding ding!

I'll be a doctor no matter where I go. Will the education I receive at Touro be significantly worse than NSU?

I don't like to be a hater but I'd say so. Touro-Ca is one of the few schools I've heard little good about. Unless you're planning on marrying this girl I wouldn't choose my school based on her.

omg no, dude your done. finished, finito. the last girl i said that about...is now my wife 😱.
unless shes got an ass like whoa. :meanie:
she sounds like she does. otherwise why would she be so different? ok im just joking, i dunno. either way. sinfest is finished. its over with.

ok heres where i get serious. she is applying to med school. so she probably knows how important getting into the best school and setting yourself up to be in good a position for the future. inso facto, she probably knows that going to nova is a better opportunity for you. so i think she'll be understanding of you choosing nove (hopefully) as she probably knows herself that its a great school. also, i want you to know that my wife and i (when we dated at first) had to do sort of a long distance relation****. it sucked, we lived 2 hours apart and saw eachother once a week. but did we do it? yes. although it will be much different for you guys. It will be a serious test to see whether you guys will actually make it.

on the plus side, not seeying eachother for a while and then seeying eachother is a recipe for some "missing you" intimate time. i call it intimate time because i have a feeling if i called it what it really is in these situations, mods would be all over me. its crazy though

also, regarding practicing back in cali. the family doc i work for had interviews at ucla for family practice and she graduated nycom. granted she really wanted to do primary care and had great comlex scores, im saying its definitly possible. would it make it easier if you went to touro for certain programs? maybe, but you also have to look at the reputation of the school regionally. if residency programs don't think that school is up to par then its reputation alone will put you at a disatvantage. i have heard stories of m3's or m4's at touro bieng pissed about rotations and how they felt unprepared when doing them and beggining residency. pd's are gonna look at where you rotated also, and if your rotations where not at hospitals where you will get decent exposure, they will take that into account.

regarding your family, well there i really can't help you. im greek and my mom hates my wife. she threw me out of the house cause of it and i refuse to talk to her till this day (been about 2 years now) so i know when somebody found somebody thats different, theyll do anything to be with them, and i can understand that. 😍

hope that helps

Ok. I know I'm being nosey and just steppin' into this convo but:

I was shadowing some residents in NYC that went to TOURO-CA and they LOVED it over there and spoke highly of the program. I think you should find some students from TOURO-CA and speak to them directly so you really know what's going on , instead of relying on an internet forum for all of your information.

I personally believe you'll be the best student where you'll be happy.

Thought I would join the little party we got goin on over here....

Background:

1st 31 credit hours of college: 0.58 (yes it's possible... actually quite impressive if I say so myself... my level of interest in college didn't even lead me to withdraw from classes, just recieved Fs)

After working for a couple years and getting my act together, was accepted back to my school and became interested in medicine and decided to major in Biotechnology.

GPA post 1st 31 catastrophe: 3.39
GPA this past year ("Jr" year) : 3.69

Overall AACOMAS GPA: 3.1
AACOMAS Science GPA: 3.06

I have worked full time while taking appx 18 credits per semester

MCAT: taking in July, scoring 30-33 on practice tests (kaplan and aamc) edit - Ended up with a 32

Have 16 schools on my list and am waiting on a summer class to end to get verified.... whoo hoo!!!!!!!!

Just wanted to update my fellow Underdoggers, I was accepted to NSU last week! I am very excited, humbled, and grateful for the opportunity to pursue my medical education at such a great school. My academic past was definitely the primary focus of my interview, but I guess I was able to adequately alleviate their concerns about my work ethic and academic abilities.

Getting into medical school really felt like a pipedream for a long time, so getting to this point is surreal. I hope this provides some encouragement to people who are fighting a similar uphill battle. Good Luck!

No need to sugar-coat it dude, it's best to be honest 🙂

Don't worry, I would never choose my school just because of a girl. She's a part of it, but not the whole story.

unless shes got an ass like whoa. :meanie:

Oh no 😱 hahaha jk

Thanks for putting things into perspective man, and sorry to hear about the situation with your mom. How long have you guys been married? My gf is definitely supportive, and she wants me to choose the school I want to attend. If it's Nova, then she wants me to go, because she knows I would be happy there. Damn, why can't she just be a totally selfish bitch? I would just ditch her, and it would make the decision much easier  jk

Nope, you're not being nosey at all. Thanks for your input 🙂

I've asked a few Touro students, and just like some people on SDN, they have been giving me really mixed reviews. Some really positive, some really negative, and most are middle-ground.

Hey people,

I've been following this thread throughout my application and I wanted to thank you all for your motivation. I got in. Here's my story:

Undergrad at well known CA school; 2.8x gpa in an engineering major

Worked for a couple of years at a well known engineering company in technical sales. After seeing hundreds of customers in various companies I decided medicine was where I belonged.

Postbac at same CA school; 3.8x GPA

Shadowed physicians and worked in healthcare for 1 year. I took the MCAT and got a 30+.

I applied broadly. Since my GPA was over 3.0 for DO schools only, I did not get any interviews at MD schools. However, I got interviews at virtually all DO schools I applied to.

To anyone reading this thread, these are real people walking through these doors. They are open to all of you. Just follow your intuition/heart/etc. and it will work out if you try hard. Good luck.
