hi there,

non-trad applying next cycle

just a few questions

Are the adcoms extremely picky about getting the dates/hours of ECs correct? I have some ECs that range from 6 - 10 years ago that I don't remember the exact # of hours worked or the exact start/end dates. Estimates are acceptable?

Also, are we allowed to cite journal references in our secondary essays? I'm using my field of research as one of the reasons for applying and don't want to have any plagiarism issues arise when I mention certain ideas.

thanks.

hey how much do you guys think this will help my gpa. im currently enrolled in Bio I and Physics I, I am retaking them. I got a C- in physics I and a C+ in Physics 2. this will leave me with only 1 C in all of my prereq's but how much do you think it will help out my gpa? are we talking like a .01 increase or possibly .1 to .2? cause that would be awthome.

btw its looking like im gonna ace both of these classes so assuming that they were both turned into A's. all i have left is the finals for both classes. and after taking upper level bios like micro, comparative anatomy and biochem, i anhilated bio I as most of you would if you had to take it again lol.

It depends on how many total units, science units, etc you have. I would bust out a calculator and calculate it or make an excel sheet, which is what I did (instant calculation).

i cant really help you with citing your own research, i honestly don't know. as far as EC's and their dates and exact hours, their not too picky. just as long as you don't overexxagerate and are honest with what you remember as best as you can. like don't write down that you have done 400 hours of community service if it was only like 30 or so lol you get the point though. i just don't think there that picky about it. GL

hmmm thanks, ill have to look into that. i have about 149 total credits. gotta look into how many are science etc.

They aren't too picky with exact hours, I always wrote down all my hours so I didn't have this issue, but I have never had someone question my hours.

I don't think it's necessary to cite your research in your essays, I did research, but I didn't cite it in my essays. I would imagine it would look awkward plopped in the middle of an essay. I did cite it for questions that asked, Have you done research, etc tho.

When I retook a C- and a C and got As in both my sGPA went from 2.8 -> 3.01 and I have a pretty large number of science credits. Expect a good sized jump if you get As in them.

Thanks for the info on the EC stuff. That's good to hear.

I guess I wasn't clear earlier. I mean to use some cool findings from other people in my research field (which influenced my own work) as examples of how my research is related to osteopathic medicine. I wouldn't worry much about plagiarism when talking about my own work, but if I start talking about other people's work, I'm not sure if I need to cite references in case there are plagiarism issues.

thanks.

oh gotcha, well on one essay I did use some stats and I said that "blah blah according to xyz," so it wouldn't seem like I was making up facts/stats. So, I would if you can make it flow, and if they want more details they'll ask you during your interview. 👍

on the LECOM portal,

The Admissions Committee has made a decision on your application. You will receive an official letter in the mail within 30 days

I'm thinking this is a rejection. Am I correct?

I've applied to 8 schools, 1 has rejected me, all of the others have asked for supplementary applications. Do most schools ask for supplementary applications so they can get that extra 50-60 bucks?

If it's LECOM-B then that was a rejection for me...but not sure 100%.

Has anyone been rejected pre-interview from Touro-CA, Touro-NV, LECOM-E, or UNECOM?

I submitted an application to LECOM Eerie through AACOMAS last week, and received an e-mail today from Eerie to submit the supplementary application. Coincidently, I checked my Brandenton status and it was changed from under review to the "we have made our decision." Is there any connection here or am I being a over circuited android?

Should I ever bother submitting a supplementary app to LECOM Eerie? 50 bucks goes a long way for me.

They are very different schools with completely different processes...so I would not base your decision for LECOM-E based on what LECOM-B did...

r u serious? thats CRAZY. i need to find an aacomas calculator cause if its that significant of a jump im not gonna do the post bach since i have other classes I can retake. anybody have a quick linkt an aacomas calculator around here? plus im really not too sure about doing this post bach. im actually quite nervous about it.

I had the same thing and got a refection letter in the mail a week later. 🙁

Did you have an interview yet? If you interviewed than it could be either way. I had that same statement after my interview and I was accepted. If you have not had an interview yet, 🙁.

Since my deadline was today, and I couldn't make a decision, I just placed my deposit at Touro-CA. I feel a mix of 🙂/🙁

I still have a week and a half to decide if I'll take my spot at NSU or not, so hopefully I will have my mind made up by then.

Sit down and figure out where you will be happiest. Cali is a tough place to leave man. Good luck 👍

I've been trying to do that for the past week

Both schools have their pros and cons. One moment I would be set on NSU, another moment I would be set on Touro. I tried to think about where I would be happiest, and I realized I would be happy at both schools for different reasons. Touro because it's in CA and I'm close to my support group, NSU because of their awesome campus and rotations. This sucks, but it's definitely a great problem to have.

How bad are the rotation sites at Touro CA compared to Nova?

How bad are the rotation sites at Touro CA compared to Nova?

Not as solid, that's for sure.

Past threads from 3rd/4th years at Touro CA had some pretty negative things to say about some of the rotation sites and clinical education department, a lot of it due to the switching of faculty IIRC. The new clinical education dean (Dr. Hartwig) has supposedly made the clinical years much more streamlined and is hoping to have CA-only clinical sites in the near future, but who knows.

I plan to leave the Bay Area during third year (if I choose to attend Touro-CA), and have Arrowhead & UCSF-Fresno as my top two choices in the lottery if they're still around. Apparently most students try to stay in or around the Bay, so I'm assuming it shouldn't be too difficult to "match" into one of those sites if they're my top choices. A Touro student said 6 students were interested in the 5 available spots at UCSF-Fresno, and 28 students were interested in the 25 available spots at Arrowhead last year. The only thing I really like about Touro's clinical years over NSU's are the large number of electives you can do. NSU does not allow any electives until fourth year, which seems like a huge hindrance if you're interested in something other than general surgery or primary care. It's possible that you may not begin your electives until 3 to 4 months into 4th year if you're stuck having to do your rural med and EM rotations early on, so forget auditioning at residency programs until after you've submitted your application if that happens. I guess this is the biggest issue I have with NSU.

btw dude, are you down to meet up with us (mega & dan)? You never replied to my PM haha

Sorry, I read it and didn't realize i should have responded, I'm down for anywhere as long as in a saturday honeslty, it could be yardhouse or anywhere else as long as it offers some micro brews!

It seems that as long as you land one of the spots in Fresno or Arrow you would be in good shape, and to stay in Cali is a plus also, IMO of course. haha

it sounds like both schools have issues with rotations then, with nova and their electives and rural rotation as well as touro with the quality of their rotations. i guess you would have to look and see if nova's matchlists is very primary care oriented and the inability to do audition rotations in third year hindered applicants from matching into specialties other than general surgery or primary care. but hey dr kirby is a derm and he went to nova!. lol although matchlists arent reliable thats what im thinking is your best bet for nsu. umdnj som doesn't allow electives third year but they seem to match some students in some awsome specialties too. it sounds like touro might be kicking it up a knotch though.

I see what you're saying, but I wouldn't really call NSU's rural med rotations an issue. I'm sure some people love that about NSU, but I personally don't think I would. I heard what some people do is they do an elective during the month they have off where they're supposed to study for Level 2's/Step 2's. Apparently NSU trains them well enough to not need much study time for that exam. I also heard NSU tries to schedule the rural med rotations so that most people will have the ability to do audition rotations prior to submitting residency apps, but some students have said that is not guarantee. You can still end up with the short straw. As for match list, IIRC NSU has a pretty good number of people going into specialties, so it may not be a huge deal, but it worries me a little.

I guess all of the electives Touro offers can be thought of as a pro or a con, depending on how you look at it. They pretty much leave you to arrange everything on your own from what I hear, so that can be a pain in the ass. But the freedom must be nice too.

Excited to start at UMDNJ next month dude?

a little i gues. its kind of bitter cause i wanna be accepted to med school already. so im not super motivated to start the program. but hey its a good opportunity so im game. hopefully if i do well in this program and dont get into med school this year that it helps me out for next app season

how bout you man. your gonna be a doctor for goodness sake. you must be going nutz.

...and I just got rejected from Western post-interview...****ing **** 🙁

That really does suck. On the other hand, it's been really difficult for me to choose between NSU and Western - both are great schools. Honestly, the pluses and minuses of each school basically equal out and you're left with location. So it looks like you're stuck with Miami's beautiful beaches, people, smog-free air, and culture. Given the price difference between COA for the schools, you can go to school at NSU and afford over ten flights back to LAX each year before even breaking even. Not too shabby if you ask me.

PS - Virgin America has a direct flight from FTL with satellite internet and TV.
😀

Sinfest,

When did you interview at Western and how long did it take for them to give you a rejection? You still got in somewhere though which is awesome🙂

PS, If i get into Western after my interview on Saturday....we can switch spots if I get your NSU spot. I dont mind😛

Just keep your head up man, you'll be there soon enough. 👍 Do they have some kind of linkage between your program and the DO program, where if you do well enough you'll get accepted?

I'm not sure if the fact I'm going to be a doctor has hit me yet. I've been worrying about it every day for the past 5 years, so getting in has definitely lifted a huge weight off of my shoulders.

Yeah, I still think about it sometimes, but oh well. There's nothing I can really do. Congrats on the acceptances though! Which school are you leaning towards?

Yep, I flew Virgin when I went to NSU for my interview. Being able to watch TV made the 6 hour flight feel a bit faster.

Hahaha I wish that was possible.

IIRC, I interviewed 10/07 and I found out 11/04

nah no linkage which sux. but appearantly they take a lot of their entering class from their post bach program.

Its very intersting that I have not heard ANYTHING from Nova, Lecom Erie, and Western and its been almost 3 months?

did u apply late? Your stats are close to mine (with the exception that your mcat is a little higher, and my gpa is 0.03 higher). I'd try calling again to remind them.

Calling them won't make a difference, I called and emailed and all you get is, "adcom is still reviewing your application". which pretty much means, that your application is not good enough for an interview just yet, and its not bad enough for a rejection. Some schools send out a mail saying you are on the hold for interview list, and some just keep you waiting and save on paper!

Funny story - the last time I flew Virgin Atlantic, the plane took off and obviously everyone started watching TV. I was all in awe over this fact until Obama came on to announce that they had "discovered a terrorist plot to bomb the US using airliners" and that there may be more packages in the air. That really sucked.

As far as your choice, if it's this difficult to decide, it may be worth it to take another trip out to each school - especially if NSU was the first school you interviewed at. Looking at a school before you have any acceptances is probably very different from looking at it after you have choices. I'd assume I'd be more focused on the school vs. the surrounding area and also more likely to gloss over minor imperfections before I had an acceptance in my pocket. Best of luck!

Oh and by the way, i've chosen Western due to the educational opportunities in LA for my fiancee. I spoke to several physicians who's advice for me on the Western vs. NSU question was basically to have her decide since she will be sacrificing so much over the next few years.

haha did everyone have that "oh ****!" look on their face? I hate flying, and if I heard that while on a plane it would just make it worse...

You're totally right about the imperfection thing. I was in awe at how awesome the campus looked, and I left NSU thinking they would be my definite choice if I didn't get into Western. After getting accepted elsewhere and doing some research, they moved a bit down my list because of some small things. Awesome school either way, just slightly less awesome than I thought the day of my interview.

Congrats on choosing Western man, it's a great school.

If I wanted to retake a pre-reqs over the summer (2011), would it be better for to apply via AACOMAS before I took the course and received the grade or after?

I asked this because I know how important it is to get your application in as early as possible...June vs. late August is a big difference

Also let's say I do submit everything in on June 1st but want to indicate to schools that I have decided to retake a pre-req, is there a way to indicate that on the AACOMAS or should I personally send them an update letter about that?

Thanks for any suggestions...👍

submit in june. you can chose "course in progress" when you enter your courses into aacomas. this will notify all the schools that you apply too that you are retaking the course. theres also the designating that you have taken it before etc. the r1 L1 thing which you will have to read into. bottom line its very easy to do. i can't remember how to do it. but i did it and i would recomend you submit early and designate the class as in progress so that way everything will be verified and the schools will have your whole application and proably review it prior to receving your new grade. some will put you on hold until they get your new grade and others will simply wait and not officially put you on hold.

on a side note, if your gpa is already competetive and your just trying to give it that extra boost, i might not put it on your application but rather update aacomas when you have completed the course and not mark that you are currently taking a class.

before i get scolded, hold on a second. my reasoning is if your application is already competetive than youll want them to review it earlier as you have a greater chance of acceptance.

HOWEVER, if your gpa is like a 3.2 or 3.3 and retaking these courses will bump you up to a 3.5 range then i would designate it. it just depends on the situation imo. For me, my sci gpa is gonna bump up about 0.2 so thats significant enough for me to want them to wait on my grades and i could care less that i was put on hold. however if you have a 3.5 and your gonna be bumping up to a 3.6 to a 3.7 then i would not designate.

regardless though, at one time or another you WILL have to let them know you took the class. you just don't have to let them know that you are CURRENTLY taking it if its not that important or significant.

i hope thats not too confusing. and i hope i helped. good luck applying next year

no thanks, everything that you said was very helpful. Appreciate it. I was not sure if there was a spot to designate that on the application...

and also I peeped that you are in the UMDNJ GSBS in SJ. It is a really good program and it puts you in a great position to get into medical school. (I am currently in the program but on the Nwk campus.) I have many friends who did the program down there and are currently at SOM and other DO/MD schools in the area. Good luck! :luck:

damn, i should have done that instead of asking straight up for it in a thread. sorry thats my bad, i feel like a bad sdn'er. for anyone interested its actually in the stickied posted by chocolate bear.

That sucks. Just own the program!
i plan on it bud oh I plan on it BIG TIME. gsbs don't know what it did when it accepted me. it unleashed a beast.

no thanks, everything that you said was very helpful.

Good luck! :luck:
hey thanks man. thats really really good to hear. I am really curious as to how it works and I wish there were some numbers on how many people actually get into the health profession school they are interested in. I am excited to start it january 3rd. Im also nervous as well. like what if the program destroys me lol. but im gonna give it my all thats for sure.

funny thing is I am commuting to stratford and live about 40 mins from newark. i just really liked that campus and the people. hopefully if I do well in the program I get in.

Just wanted to update my fellow Underdoggers, I was accepted to NSU last week! I am very excited, humbled, and grateful for the opportunity to pursue my medical education at such a great school. My academic past was definitely the primary focus of my interview, but I guess I was able to adequately alleviate their concerns about my work ethic and academic abilities.

Getting into medical school really felt like a pipedream for a long time, so getting to this point is surreal. I hope this provides some encouragement to people who are fighting a similar uphill battle. Good Luck!

Congrats man, I was rooting for you. The thing I've enjoyed about applying DO is they concentrate more on "the doctor you're going to be" as opposed to "the student you were"

I'm wondering who out there has gotten in/has interviews with super low scores (even for underdogs). The main page hasn't been updated in a while and with all the talks on these posts about schools already filling up their classes, I could use some motivators. 🙂 Anyone have a GPA around 3.0ish and MCAT less than 27 and getting some good news? Private message me if you prefer.

It's sad that the numbers mean so much and sadly I'm in a position that because I have gone through so much school (finishing masters and did some post-bacc science classes) that I'd have to take an obscene amount of courses to raise my GPA anymore....My extra-curriculars are honestly quite unique and impressive but as we all know at the end of the days the numbers weigh more. Now i'm rambling...

i feel your pain. after i finish the courses im in I should have a 3.2 sci 3.3 cgpa and a 25 mcat. 9/7/9. i havent heard anything but rejections.

It feels like the interview season has finally caught up with me within the past couple of days... Interviewed at VCU (my state school) yesterday, called EVMS (another state school) to find out I had been wait-listed, got home to find a rejection from CCOM waiting for me, then listened to a voicemail with an interview invitation from VCOM-VC, and now I'm mailing out my offer acceptance to NSUCOM because Dec. 15th is very quickly approaching.

Long story short, it looks like schools are beginning to make some serious moves before their first deadline of Dec. 15th, so if you're still waiting for some news, it's probably coming soon. Oh the ups and downs of being a medical school applicant...

I have a 3.3 and 25 with good work and research experience. I've been put on hold at AZCOM and DMU, rejected RVU and CCOM. Interviews at VCOM, SIU, Touro NV, and KCUMB.

I have a science GPA just below 3.2 and got a 25 on the MCAT. I have received interviews to KCOM, TUCOM NV, LECOM, KCUMB, PNW, and St. Louis. So far I have been accepted to KCUMB and Touro NV. I am still waiting to hear back from others. I believe it was my extracurriculars that got me in. I also have very unique ec's and they have been the focus of most of my interviews
