Hello,

I am considering dropping Calc. 2 because it looks like the absolute best I will be able to pull off is a C. I am a Zoology major, and Calc. 2 is not a requirement. I was taking it so I could take Physics w/ Calc.

I can still pull off a fragile 4.0 (I am a transfer student and have a 0.00 at the moment) without the Calc and just take regular Physics. I would have a "W" on my transcript.

I have contacted my advisor through e-mail but he has yet to respond.

Just thought I'd ask you guys. I did a search for this kind of thing but could not find anything. Sorry if this has been discussed recently.

Thanks a lot,
Elliott

you may be a transfer student but aadsas (and all schools for that matter) want you to post all schools you attended and the grades. Therefore your GPA can be recalculated

So even if you have a 4.0 at the school you are at now, really doesnt make a diff in the long run

Oh yea, I got a B- in calc II because I stuck it through and busted my butt. Calc II is the hardest calc I would have to say

Yeah, I say you should stick it out. A W looks worse than a C, and Calculus II won't be considered to highly by admissions people, though it will factor into your science GPA, but so will the W. I think if you sit down with your professor and tell him your situation you should be able to bring it up to a B. Just my thoughts.

My opinion is to drop it if you are comfortable with only dropping that class from here on out. Just have a good reason for it of some sort.

At a first glance, admissions will see your gpa, and only after getting through that first cut will they start to inspect the details.

So, IMO, I would drop it, but you really will be walking a tightrope in regards that you should avoid dropping any other class at ALL odds.

if you drop, retake it and it won't be a big deal.

I agree that you should drop it too. However, you better be prepared to have a good reason for dropping the course. A couple Ws here and there probably wonr affect you much; but anything more than that might raise some red flags.

Thanks for the advice, folks.

I go to UF, and as a transfer student, I only get two W's anyway.

Why the fluff does CALCULUS factor in to my science GPA? This makes no sense to me.

And someone said that a W will still be factored in to my GPA -- how would this work? Do you mean it will factor in in that it will look really bad?

Thanks again for your help.

I have a W and it didn't factor into my AADSAS GPA.

For that matter, it didn't factor in my college GPA either.

So that's my reasoning for just dropping it. If you go in with a 3.8 or higher and a W, they are going to notice that 3.8 first rather than be nitpicky about that single W.

But that C will drop your 4.0 pretty quickly, that's why I say to just drop the class, but get an A in it next time around. All my opinion of course.

Now would you recommend me retaking the course even if it is not required?

I am not going to base my actions on your advice alone (that would be silly), but I appreciate the input.

I'd say stick it. I took Calc II for fun . but it turn out not to be fun at all!! But I felt happy when the course ended. It was a great relief and I passed it. I can restate your own question as should I fight? or flight = W?. Obviously fight.

In my opinion if you wanna drop and take calc again. Honestly, you can retake it but it's better if you use that time to take upper level bio classes that would help you for dental school. Like Neurobiology, Histology, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology.

Hope this helps

Hmm, that's a tougher call. The class I dropped I ended up retaking, but it was also required.

I don't know, I just don't get the feeling thus far that if your GPA is 3.8+ that they are really THAT nitpicky.

As in, would they even look extremely close to see if you retook the exact same class. I guess some adcoms will and others won't. I assume you will have to take the Calc II for non engineers and that should be fine, IMO.

But it is probably good that you at least take Calc II in some way, shape or form again.
