I am getting spam from overseas med schools and DO schools based on my MCAT score! I mean, it's not like I got a 15 or something! Please tell me this is happening to other people, I'm so sad right now. :( I am being recruited for being subpar.

I think that a lot people get these letters. I remember getting envelopes in the mail baring "It's not too late to apply" from the Caribbean schools.

Isn't it possible to get into a Carribean school within a couple of months? That's really kind of a selling point! :D

But I want to go to a real med school... :(

Go Carribean, get your MD in two weeks!

Make sure you post this in the DO section too...Im sure they will give you some thoughts.

Carribean schools are like community colleges. You don't really apply to them, you just sign up. And yes, getting accepted with only a few months notice is very easy. In fact, it's the norm.

don't worry. i got podiatry schools and a couple of D.O. schools asking me to apply. they just got your name off AACOMAS or AMCAS apps.

i'm getting some too, and I got 36 on the mcats. I'm sure they just send them out to everyone/random people.

yeah, the first one i ever got was from ross i think and it had "ITS NOT TO LATE TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAM" in big bold letters on the post card. I was like, "WTH do these people know that i dont know."

I don't have anything against DO schools, in fact I would rather go to one if there were one within 8 million miles of Alabama. (That's a joke, I know there is a DO school within 8 million miles of here. Please do not take personally.)

That said, I think it's depressing to be solicited because my MCAT score is low. It makes me wonder if there is some kind of score range where the lower people get emails from the Carribean and the upper people are being invited to shadow brain surgeons or whatever. And it makes me sad to be in the low group.

Ohhh, you are all are so testy on here!

Thanks Camill and Arsenic, that's all I needed to hear!

Yep. It's happening to me too. I did fairly well on my MCAT too, so I don't think it's because we're sub-par. =)

You're not being solicited base on MCAT score, but simply due to the fact that you've taken, or plan to take the MCAT.

It's not so much an "invite" as it would be an advertisement of sorts.

The podiatry ones were my favorite. I'm not sure, but I think I might have gotten optometry too.

Same here. I got a 36 and got an email yesterday from some DO school or other.

I got my 2nd or 3rd podiatry letter yesterday. :D

Don't knock podiatry guys. My old neighbor started out with nothing but a fat loan from podiatry school, but now the guy is in his early 40's and loaded. He's not flashy, but he just had a huge custom home built that is just decked out.

He doesn't have many of the crazy after ours calls that FP's have to contend with, and his reimbursements are great. He does minor surgeries, and is very good at what he does, regardless of what people say about them versus orthopaedic surgeons etc.

It's not a bad profession if you can get into a partnership in a good area. Not unlike dentistry in that regard, I think.

Samething with my neighbor. He is a VERY successful podiatrist and can compete with every doc on my block.

So AMCAS sells our names and contact info to these schools in order for them to solicit us for their institution. I don't remember reading any sort of clause in their disclosure regarding this...

Class action here we come!

BrettBatchelor said:
Im pretty sure there is a clause on the MCAT registration that you can check to have recruitment from medical schools.

I deliberately indicated I did not want my MCAT information distrubited, but still received unsolicited information from medical schools.

Man, I hardly get ANY of this spam that other people get... I mean I've literally only received only 2 pieces of snail mail and 0 emails with schools trying to sell me on something. I don't know whether I should be thankful or feel left out. ;)

I've received a bunch of them and I haven't even taken the MCAT yet so I'm sure they send them to everybody.

HAHA that is pretty funny I have to admit...LOL

I've gotten carribean, podiatry, and optometry, but no osteopathy. Also, the WuStl solicitation.

Podiatrists and DOs get a bad rep but don't knock what you don't know. People will drive miles for DO well trained in OMM, podiatrists are specialists that make good money (they are everywhere from military to sports) and the latter has a 2 year residency for surgery. Can you beat that?

The army won't leave me alone. I've recieved three snail mail brochures/letters from them, including one addressed to "medical school graduate". I've also recieved emails from a few Osteopathic schools that were filled with grammatical errors.

There was actually a point in time when I would get excited to get these emails ;)

lol indeed it is, 'i' before 'e' except after 'c'... sorry received is an exception :)

Funny. A quote from Tucker himself "I may suck but atleast I'm not a dog catcher."

wow i feel kinda bad for the caribbean schools. they spend so much time trying to get our attention--posters and fliers at schools, random mass emailing-- and not only do we ignore it, we take it as an insult....
i'm sure the caribbean schools are just as good as any other. the only reason i didn't apply was because of location and residency

Don't be so self-conscious of your MCAT score. If you've decided to go ahead and apply, then stop worrying about your score and just focus on finishing secondaries and doing well if you get interviews. Dwelling on the MCAT once you've applied is useless and if you're going to take things like that personally, you're likely to run into some problems when you're interviewing and the interviewer asks you about your MCAT score. Just acknowledge your performance and move on.

Don't worry--it will catch up to you. I got so much mail from everywhere around November. It was funny because I was thinking to myself; shouldn't you have sent this back in June when I was applying so that I could actually take applying to any of these schools seriously?

Remember that the Carribean schools are privately owned, so its not really any different than a business that advertises on TV or in the paper or has a circular in the newspaper. They just happen to be smart about deciding where they're going to spend their advertising dollars and send it to a pool of people that are known to be applying to medical school at some point. If you were to compare the cost of sitting down and looking at MCAT scores and deciding whether someone is likely to apply to their school versus just mass e-mail and bulk mailing everyone who has taken the MCAT--its worth it to just send something to everyone taking the MCAT.

Again, its not based on your MCAT score, its based on having taken the MCAT.

As for the DO vs MD debate, don't go there. They are most definitely doctors as well, they just take a different approach to it and accomplish their outcomes through different procedures and medically indicated interventions.

The practice of osteopathic medicine is highly dependent on finding people qualified to be physicians that find the osteo philosophy fits with their vision of the practice of medicine as well as people who reflect the characteristics important in an osteopathic physician. Frequently, those people are ones that have had some life experiences, still want to be a physician, and need for someone to see beyond the numbers and look at what they truly have to offer as individuals.

Remember also that many osteopathic physicians jump into the same residency pool as allopathic doctors, so even if the background training reflects a different philosophy, the field-specific training is often the same.

It's all just huge random mailing lists and the harder time schools have recruiting the more mail they send out. I was a junior in college before I stopped getting mail from those all women's colleges on the East coast. My favorite was the package that arrived at my home address in the middle of my freshman year. It was a fortune cookie that said inside "we see Randolph Macon in your future" I think the cookie was wrong:)
Don't worry about the mailings...

LOL, I wasn't concerned until I started getting emails that start with "Don't worry, maybe you can get into our school!"

Nah, I was a post-bac student and I took the MCAT while completing all of my science requirements at once and before the year was even over. I did the best I could considering I had never taken physics before in my life, and I only had trouble in one section. It's not the strongest part of my app, but it's not awful by any means. (Well, maybe just by SDN standards! ;) )

I know your kidding. But, the fact is that most orthos specialize anyways. I broke my hand once (I won't say how LOL), and was sent to an ortho (non-surgical, I think) that only did hands.

If you think about it, someone that only does lower extremities is going to really know their sh...t.

Also, most of what these DPM's do are procedures, so it's kind of cool. Granted, most office procedures are pretty minor, but they are higher reimbursing procedures nonetheless, and pretty cool. I shadowed my neighbor once, but it's not for everybody.

Sure - an orthopedic surgeon has a surgical residency three times longer than that. What's your point?

Point is that many people choose to do podiatry and DO for many reasons. Just because you choose to do so doesn't make you subpar. In my experience, half of the people who make comments about these professions hardly know anything about them.

Prowler, knee, hip, shoulder, and spine surgery is not exactly what we're comparing podiatry to.

For a multiple compound fracture of the leg, sure, you're gonna see an ortho.

But, not everything is that complex, and podiatrists certainly fill a niche IMO.
