Hi all I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on their thoughts on the Michigan IM program. I know its a really strong program. I just wanted to know if any had any perspective on the workload, the city, and the camaraderie among the residents. If any residents from michigan have any input or if anyone else any experience with the program it would be much appreciated.

Fine I'll bite.

Michigan is 3rd on my list right now behind both hopkins programs. I must confess its only solidly 3rd because of some couple's match restrictions. Otherwise it'd likely be 3rd or 4th with northwestern being the primary competition. Overall its a fabulous program, the people are super nice and pretty chill (t-shirts and jeans type of people), the residents are probably among the top 3 best trained (in my opinion) on my interview trail. The program has a ton of tradition, is growing, and is well run with very stable staff.

The only thing I didn't like is the patient racial diversity seemed a little slim and I worry that the town is too small for me. However, we never got to see the VA so I'm not so sure if my racial diversity qualm holds up. If michigan IM was in new york or boston or any other major US city, it'd be everyone's number 1. It really is just an awesome program.

It is phenomenal. Awesome patient population, diverse hospital experiences, great centers of excellence, School of Public Health, etc.

I am a recent grad from this program, so can lend some insight. I am not from Michigan so was nervous about what Ann Arbor would be like (aka boring). This program is nothing short of amazing. Don't get me wrong, they will work you hard, but I can honestly say that the past three years were some of the best years of my life. The program director, Dr. Del Valle is incredible. He is absolutely committed to making Michigan the best program in the country. He is very fair and really listens to the residents and implements the feed back. My co-residents were incredibly smart and very down to earth (not crazy gunners) and all matched at really good programs (mostly cards and GI). Ann Arbor is small but there are plenty of good bars and honestly, I felt my co-residents had more to do with how much fun the residency was than the city/town. Hope this is helpful!
