I currently work part time (about 15-20 hours/week) at a sports bar waitressing. During football season, I usually make about $500 a week in cash tips just working Friday nights and games on Saturday/Sunday. Do you think these hours will be manageable once I am in dental school? Having an influx of cash sounds incredible, but most people I have talked to say don't even attempt to hold a part time job while in school.

Unless you're the sort of person that does not sleep, you won't have the time to juggle work and handle a dental school's curriculum.

I can imagine it just depends on the school and how well you handle information. I get the impression that NYU is hectic schedule/work wise compared to Temple, especially for D1 year. I remember reading that D1 students are eased into school and have a good amount of free time to study.

I agree with Faux that it depends on your school. After reading posts from other D1's about their schedules, I seriously have it made at my school as a D1. Lots of time to study, plenty of free time (then we get slammed with craziness during 2nd year). A D2 that I spoke to told me that she had time to work her old job (her job before going to dental school) on the weekends during first year.

So the answer is... maybe? Depends on your schedule. Talk to an upperclassman at the school you're interested in and they'll give you better insight.

Personally, I think you'll be able to work, just not that kind of hours, and probably restricted to weekends only.

There are schools with more forgiving curriculum, but as far as I can tell, the 2 schools that I am well versed in are literally 8-5 Mon-Thurs and you might get out a little early on Fridays. Depending on your post-graduation plans, gliding by with C's is pretty non-stressful (so I've heard). But if you want to specialize, you probably wouldnt even have enough time to work out and eat, let alone work.
