write American DAT. By the time you get your cDAT results in your hands, 99% of the seats will be filled. Good luck

Naw... I didn't submit my application until late october, and didn't get in my reference letters until December 4th or 5th. I got 3 interviews within the succeeding few days, and many more offers came in within the next month.

If you have strong stats they will watch your application and wait for the final parts to be complete, and as soon as that last information comes in they will call - no doubt.

I interviewed on the last or 2nd last interview day at UPenn (It was Feb 27), and that ended up being the school I am now attending. There is hope.

If you can help it, I would try and get in everything sooner, but if you don't think you'll do good on the DAT until november, then write in November. Strong numbers trump an early application.

Yay I'm so happy I found this thread! Very helpful. Best luck to us all.
So here's what I learned so far. Despite the 'rolling' admission the first round of interview decisions is usually made in September. So if you can get everything in by Sept 1 you'd be at a good place.
I think it's a good idea to visit schools personally. It gives you an edge in the interview.
I heard a lot of things about American DAT being easier. Is it? I mean excluding the obvious differences like Ochem and carving.
Lastly, someone asked me WHY US school instead of Canadian school. I did not come up with an impressive answer. I do like the states. One obvious reason is that I like exploring new places (hence going away for college and going on exchanges, etc). But my other reasons are not good for admission purposes. What would you guys say if you were asked this?

Some Canadian students scoff at those who attend school in the US rather than Canada. The ignorant ones assume its because they weren't good enough to get into a Canadian one. lol its not always about saving money when there's better education elsewhere. I don't think any Canadian schools have any simulation mannequins.

I got an email saying that I filled in the coursework part wrong. Since I'm at UBC, we have a winter semester (Term 1: Sept-Dec and Term 2: Jan-Apr). But when I split them terms up, one would be considered 2007W and the other 2008W (ie, designating the year that that course started). But if I do it like that, then the order gets all messed up cause in the following year, I'll have another 2008W (sept-dec) and 2009W (jan-apr).

Any help on properly entering this in would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I called Term 1 Fall and then Term 2 Winter.

Who cares what others think 🙂

Let's get serious: the only American schools that we would possibly choose over a Canadian school (if we got in) are the Ivy leagues..

22222222222

cuz.. U of Toronto is a fairly good school itself (18th in the world)
Yet, the tuition for domestic students = 25k only

Are you Canadian ppl planning on applying to Canadian schools too?
I think you can start applying in August?

I'm pretty sure UBC sets you up to work on the real chairs when you do sims (from what I've heard)

If not for the greater price of going to most American schools, and the proximity to home, it would be a different story; depending on the person of course.

I sent mine from UTSG regular mail last week and it arrived already. Still have two other transcripts from other universities coming in but postal strike is gonna hurt.

Hey! I was wondering since you go to UTSG. I go to UTSC and for the section where you have to write credit hours attempted (on the application)....how did you convert them since our courses are 0.5 credit (which is not credit hour system)

3.0h for 0.5 6.0h for 1.0

so put 6.0 cr hours for PSL302Y1

I go to UTSG too : P

Guys! I'm in desperate need of advice. I don't think I'm going to get into UWO off of the waitlist so I need to know if it's worth it for me to apply to American schools now.

The issue is: I haven't started my app, I don't have LORs from basic science profs, and I don't have 100 hrs of shadowing. Presumably, the last two can be fixed with a few letters (ie. I can do my shadowing before I matriculate)?

The good part is I have good stats:
cGPA: 3.8
sGPA: No idea. It's higher. 3.85?
DAT: 23AA/26PAT/26RC/21SCI
but only an 11 in carving (though many schools don't look at carving because they don't know how to interpret it, is that right?)

Also strong ECs (exec on many clubs, 1.5 years of hospital volunteering, 2+ years of lab research, several scholarships & studentships totalling $20000+)

Basically, although my application may be strong, is it worth it for me to try to apply by Sept or so?? And which schools should I aim for?

Thanks guys! I'm new to all of this.

your stats are awesome. even if you apply after Dec, likely to end up with multiple interviews. hope you don't take away my seat

where are you thinking of applying to? I think you definitely still have a shot

That's the thing. I haven't done exactly much research into this because I was primarily concerned with Canadian schools.

The issue is with LORs and shadowing hours; if I can somehow get a dentist to write a letter saying i WILL complete xx amount of hours in the next xx months, is that sufficient? Also my LORs are all from people who actually KNOW me (ie. profs who supervised me in research or a clinic supervisor who was my boss for over a year) rather than basic science profs whom I've spoken to maybe 3 times total. Are there any schools that don't require these ridiculous science faculty LORs?!

Basically, where are you guys applying? Since everything's centrally done on AADSAS I presume it shouldn't be too much work to apply to as many schools as possible?

I'm hoping to have an idea of what I need to do over the coming month soon because I am also currently studying for my MCAT which is scheduled for Sept 10.

Thanks for the encouragement! I'll be sure not to apply to any schools you're applying to. 😛

my advice for you, contact ur profs and get LORs asap. As you are waiting, write ur personal statement and have ur cDAT scores sent to your schools of choice

Okay I found the ADEA GPA conversion table here:
http://www.adea.org/dental_education_pathways/aadsas/Applicants/GeneralInstructions/Documents/2011%20GPA%20Calculations.pdf

And I went through all my grades and calculated each type based on the letter grades on my transcript (though there are percentages also, and my school certainly doesn't give out 4.33's so I'm not sure if this is correct... but I believe AADSAS only gives out the brutal 80-89 is a B and 90-100 is an A if there are no letter grades on the transcript... mine has them so I'm fine right?). Presumably I have a more accurate vision of what my grades actually are to the ADEA:

BCP: 3.84
SciGPA: 3.88

NonSciGPA: 3.96

cGPA: 3.9

I'm pretty much done filling out my app besides the personal statement, so if I can get a hold of profs and my dentist downtown then I am on track to have my app completed by early to mid September... is it too late? I understand that seats are already filling up. 🙁 Are my chances good enough?

Thanks everyone.

So my cGPA and NonSciGPA are high, but I am a bit worried about the BCP part. I did excellent in first and second year but some third and fourth year classes (particularly physics and biochemistry) really brought me down because I am absolutely awful at math.

That said, my DAT scores are still high.

Absolutely. Your DAT scores are invincible.
it is also harder to get good scores in candian DAT then american DAT.
As far as I know, only a couple of ppl in canada get 25+ in any section.

Sorry, I edited my post. I just recalculated everything based on semester hour weights... forgot to do that. The good news is it drove up my BCP at a slight cost to my cGPA, but not much, so everything looks far more balanced now, if I've calculated it correctly.

Is the DAT weighted heavily with American schools? In Canadian schools it accounts for only like 10-15% of their admissions decisions, so even my DAT score couldn't make up for my GPA... Canadian schools are absolutely ridiculous.

And yes, you're right, 25+ means 99-100th percentile. My RC and PAT scores were in the top 10 in the country and the AA was in the top 50. I studied REALLY hard, believe me.

Alright, well, as long as the carving score doesn't kill me, I'm going to go through with this! Hope it's not too much effort... Anybody willing to go over my personal statement when I'm done? 😳

Thanks so much!

If you indicated a Canadian DAT score on AADSAS, will the schools just hold your application and not process it until they receive an official report from the CDA?

No. You don't send your CDA scores to the ADEA. You send them to each school you're applying to through the CDA request website. It's a huge hassle and costs a **** ton of money, but read the instructions on the DAT score section and you'll see that that's what you have to do, unfortunately.

Though why bother? Your aDAT scores are good enough. Just have AADSAS retrieve those via your DENTPIN. It's a lot easier and costs you no money.

One obvious reason is that I like exploring new places (hence going away for college and going on exchanges, etc). But my other reasons are not good for admission purposes. I think this is a GREAT reason. It's the same reason I gave when I visited american schools, and still stand by it today. This was the 2nd most important reason for me choosing to pursue an American education.

At my interviews, I also talked about the amount of funding that American schools get. Dentistry is very technology-driven, and things like CAD-CAM and endodontic microscopes are fairly new to dentistry and where do you think large manufacturers like 3M or Denstply go to first to test out their knew machines? American schools! Because they are down the block from their headquarters!

Furthermore, at private institutions in the USA, there are students from all over! We have people from several African countries, UK, Korea, India, and South American countries at UPenn. Then on top of that are the foreign-trained dental graduates who join us in year 3. If you go to UBC, you see a home-grown dental student population for the first two years. I don't think any dental schools in Canada even consider International applicants (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) - except of course the foreign trained dentist programs.

The larger class size also means there is more diversity, more people to meet, more connections to make. We have so many student organizations. My American friends here are from all over the USA, they are anything but homogenous.

I also talked about the pride Americans have in their alma matter. I felt that this experience was something that I lacked when I did my undergrad in Canada. I wnated to experience the pride that Americans have in their school. At my college, our sports teams sucked, and basically noone watched the games, but school spirit is huge in the USA. Also, alumni networks are much more prominent down here. However, I've been at Penn for 2 years, and I have yet to see a Penn sports team - but that is because we don't have good sports teams, but other schools do! [I have, however, attended 2 Phillies games (baseball), 1 Flyers game, and 1 76'ers game 🙂. Soon I want to see the Eagles play.]

These were my reasons, and you have to pick your own reasons that suit who you are. It seems like you really like travelling, so I'd work with that.

You are talking about Simulation laboratories?
During my interview rounds, I was sold that these were the best thing to ever come to dentisry. But after experiencing them, I found otherwise. They were hardly helpful to me. The pre-clinic - drilling on fake teeth with no technology - simulates real clinic way better. Being able to see a blown-up electronic picture of a tooth and measure with a mouse and a keyboard parts of your prep just didn't seem helpful. Measuring with a perioprobe is the skill you need to hone. When you blow up a tooth that much, you see that nothing will every look flat, and walls will never be straight. Especially if it's your first couple months of having a handpiece in your hand.

Your chance of specializing after coming out from an American school is much higher than a Canadian school. Ask any dentist in Canada. I think my rejection from Canadian schools was a blessing in disguise...

hey everyone, i'm on the fence of whether I should retake the DAT in November...
I'm in Alberta and looking to apply to the U of Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.
cDAT scores (Feb 2011): 26 Carving/21 RCT/20 PAT/19 Sci Total/20 AA
OGPA: 3.77 (according to grade scale at sask and alberta), 3.90 using Manitoba's scale
I checked admission stats at U of A, and all these numbers fall within the accepted range. For U of S, I could only find the average GPA, which is 86% (~3.85). Couldn't find Manitoba stats.
So, should I rewrite the DAT to improve my scores? I just want to put my application beyond doubt.
Thanks

You may wish to post in the Premed101 Dental forum. This forum and thread is for American dental school prospects.

Really? Could this be a personal preference thing? Are there some students who prefer sim labs?

Thanks for sharing your opinions man!

I'll be reapplying to U of T and UWO as I did last year, but also UBC, Alberta, McGill, Manitoba and Sask, just in case I get lucky. 🙂

same with me 😛 but i don't think i will be applying to non-ontario schools cuz they have a small number of spots available for out-of-province students. I also did so poorly on carving... and UBC wants u to have like 20 in carving?? No chance for me then.

so.. just U of Toronto and UWO I will be applying to. Since you have stellar cDAT scores, I have no doubt u will be getting interviews at these two schools lol btw, which school do u go to?

It's true that the chances are slim, but there's no harm in trying. What's a few more hundred dollars in application fees? ><

The UBC carving cut off is 12, and UAlberta is 15. I only know this because I got 11 on Carving and as a result my application was invalid for those schools; I'll be rewriting this November just for the sake of getting 15+ on carving.

To be honest, high DAT scores do NOT really matter in Canada. DAT scores account for about 10-15% of their admissions decision. It's a numbers game. 60% of their decision is based on your GPA. You can have a 3.8 GPA, the best DAT score in the country (say 24-25+ in everything) and still get rejected as opposed to a guy who has a 3.85 and an average (20-22) DAT who stands a better chance. It's an unfortunate truth.

And I went to U of T... which is why I'm thinking of attending U.S. schools. 😛

haha.. We went to such a hard school for undergrad -_-;; I regret going to u of Toronto for my undergrad... so hard to come out of it with good GPA at the end.. never knew that cDAT scores do not matter much at all ㅇ0ㅇ!!

Is it too late for me to apply to american schools, my canadian gpa is >3.9. I am hoping to write American DAT by august 6 to 11. I have already sent my transcripts and my LOE should be in soon, my application should be ready to go by August 15. I am getting the feeling that this is quite late in the application cycle.

I have stats around the same and I'll be later than you (haven't sent in anything yet, though I've written the Canadian DAT). I've been told we still have a decent chance. Keep in mind it might take 3-4 weeks to mark your DAT and have the scores submitted, so you can hope to be complete by early September?

how did you guys pay for the Supplemental fees. I just got my Money Order returned from Columbia today b/c they dont accept foreign checks or money orders; even though the fund is in US$.

??? WTF

hmm.. I sent all my supplemental fees via cheques from US fund... USC cashed mine w/o a problem...I haven't had any other schools cash them yet though...
I went to a few banks to look into the US accounts and an RBC employee told me not to get one from them b/c they've had times when their cheques have been refused in the US.

Then I went to TD and they made one for me and express posted my cheques for me free of charge... (I think the guy @ the bank wanted me to come to him IF I happened to get a LOC later b/c I heard they get comission for it )

PS: for Case Wester, once their know that you've submitted your application AADSAS, they send you an e-mail w/ the option to make the payment online... so don't bother sending them a cheque beforehand... just wait and do it online

I had my cheque returned to me too. I don't know I can send anything to them - I don't have a US bank account.

I was just wondering because most people that were accepted on predents.com last year had submitted in June/july and as canadians it is a bit tougher for entry into some schools. Anyways thanks for the info cleanup. Good luck

That's because most people on Predents.com are huge keeners who upload their stats, send in their app, and finalise everything by late June-mid July. They're the folks who are waiting for supplementals and interview offers right now. It's not necessarily representative of the entire applicant pool and it certainly doesn't mean that there aren't spots left, just that the competition is tougher later on; schools will be more discerning from August to November and generally applicants need to have higher stats in order to be granted interviews.

All the best. 🙂

That is weird. Which bank did you get the money order from? I bank with (and work for) TD so I sent a TD money order in USD and I received an e-mail today from Columbia stating that my fee was received. So you should be safe with TD. Only thing is that TD's policy is that the money order must come out of a TD account (some branches MAY make an exception).

Also to whoever was asking: money order = bank draft. Just two different terms for the same thing. Some banks call it a money order when it is less than $1000 and bank draft over $1000.

I had my cheque returned to me too. I don't know I can send anything to them - I don't have a US bank account.

This confused me too! I work at RBC and they call the money orders that the school request, a bank draft (same exact thing though). Just make sure you request to have them made in US funds. Also, if you keep the back copy they can track and help you out in case the school for some reason doesn't accept it. I used RBC bank drafts for all my schools and so far havent had any problems.

Also to whoever was asking: money order = bank draft. Just two different terms for the same thing. Some banks call it a money order when it is less than $1000 and bank draft over $1000.

Darn it. I got my TD cheque returned to me in the mail today... I guess I'll have to try again w/ a money order...
