DAMN!

Good, tough, reading. Emphasizes several points on the stresses of residency and importance of support networks. That, and always, ALWAYS sleep on a major decision before acting.

A must read thread for those going through tough times in residency.

Hang in there. Find support where you can. Swallow your pride when you must and stand up for yourself when you must.

It does get better.

So I started reading through that post yesterday and then finsished it up today while on-call and had a few thoughts:

1) You can't help feeling really bad for a guy who has ostensibly made innumerable sacrifices over the years to get where he was..lots of family stuff, financial stuff, etc. Only to have this happen to him now. But...

2) I also found myself cringing when he described how he handled some of the situations he found himself in... I mean... I guess I can just say I would never have handled some of those situations in the same way he did, and am not entirely surprised that things came to a poor conclusion. And finally...

3) After reading JPP's post on that thread, I was really proud to be a member of this forum. Other posters were saying stuff like "wow that sucks" and "well you should have done xyz" and Jet offered some real, honest-to-God personal support to someone who was very clearly having a personal crisis of sorts. Jet kind of makes us all look a little bit better by association. 👍

I wonder if my post is the one that prompted him to ask the thread to be closed... 😀

Oh, and here's a totally gratuitous picture of David Hasselhoff:

From reading the his messages, it looks like he had everything working against him especially the nurses. The nurses I worked with when I started intership were very helpful, friendly, and understanding (of me being new). Without them working on my side, life really would have been hell.

No, it wasn't that.

He had second thoughts about identifying the program since it may have resulted in additional repercussions when trying to get another position elsewhere.

I was just kidding. (You did notice the David Hasselhoff picture, right?)

You were lucky. The MICU nurses (when I was an intern) did everything they could to sabotage me. One nurse even gave a patient fentanyl, when she was expressly told not to give the patient any narcotics by both myself and the attending. She did it during the night and never told me about it. There was no order for narcotics. She almost killed him. Fortunately, she had my attending to answer to the next day. But, the lying b*tch tried to say I gave her a verbal order to give fentanyl. I literally wanted to take her out back and beat her. Again, fortunately, the attending believed me, and the policy changed about "verbal orders" for narcotics after that episode.

Guess who's still working in the MICU? (I'll give you a hint: it's not me.) No one was written up either. Unbelievable. In many states, nurses would have to go before the nursing board for such an action. Guess our hospital really doesn't have any balls.

Yeah, these quotes seems rather ironic, in light of his post...

The relationships they develop with individual patients and patient families are emphasized as an important source of information, a valuable therapeutic tool, and a source of a satisfying and enjoyable practice experience.

The combination of a high-volume, hands-on experience and appropriate supervision causes our first year residents to mature and develop into physicians who are capable and ready to accept the challenges and responsibilities of upper level house officers.

We welcome resident feedback and suggestions at weekly resident meetings attended by the program director and associate program director. Many improvements in our program have come as a result of listening to our residents' ideas and responding to their needs.

Because we believe that physicians can best care for others when they also care for themselves, the department encourages residents to take good care of themselves and of their relationships with family and friends.

I'm sorry. I got lost in his eyes/chest hair. You were saying something?

Wow. That's restraint already. I wouldn't wait to go out back. I'd start choking her right then and there.

Not surprising since you seem to be an arrogant know it all most of the time.

If you want to pick a fight, why not with your boyfriend? Or, is it just that you are tired of him kicking your ass too?

Where do you come from, bro? You pop up every week or so with a horribly misdirected one-liner which is of no help to anyone...why? The last one was the crack about flogging DeBakey in his R.I.P. thread. NICE.
