Hey All
I wanted to put forth this question to all past/current international dentists in a DDS/DMD program and also to FTDs waiting to start school next spring/summer/fall.

Having gone through 2-3years in school in this highly accelerated and rigorous program- what would you recommend we do in the next 6months to help prepare for the next years.

NBDE-pt 2?
Dental Assistant?
Any other reading up?
others?

Please put forth some ideas so the next class can benefit from your experiences.
Thanks
🙂

Dear Impact,

Congratulations for a great idea to your list I want to add a request for how a person who is wanting to get into a masters program could use these few months before he begins schooling. If any of the senior IDP students have an idea what a school would expect from a masters applicant it would benefit a great lot of people. Waiting for your inputs

I really love to know how we should use this time to get maximum benefit of it, because most of the time what happens with me is after time is over I come to realize that if I have used my time doing this or something ,which is really very imp but because of lack of knowledge I didn't used my time properly the way I should have used it....
I wanted to know if I want to do residency after DDS waht exrra efforts are required now ,so plz senior DDS\DMD students put yr input to help us out...

Thank you in advance

how about........ENJOYING...come on ppl we will b so busy afterwards ...its best to just enjoy

Hi,

I have a very basic question, I am really interested to pursue residency after my DDS.But I would like to know if we need to take a loan and pay the fees for specialty too like DDS or will we be paid stipend like the medical residents.

I really appreciate if any one can answer my query.

Thank you n good luck

Hi,

As far as i know, that during speciality program after DDS/DMD the program pays you and a good amount,. I know this because one of my cousine did her speciality from Washington and she was paid very good amount. However, if a Person doing Speciality without DDS/DMD will not be paid and he has to pay the tution. Please someone correct me if i am wrong.
I hope thie helps.
Cheers!!

Yes, you have to pay the program normally. However it is not as expensive as the regular DDS program. SOME programs, normally at public schools (UCSF, UTHSCSA for example) offer a stipend. The stipend can sometimes be of a superior value than the tuition or close to it. Remember that these programs normally last 3 years and they are full time. In theory you are not allowed to work while in the program, but a lot of the time they open exceptions and you can work on weekends or late evenings.
I have a friend who did prostho at Baylor and she said that what she paid for the tuition was basically the same as what she got as stipend, so her studies were almost for free ( you gotta thik also there is cost of living, materials, etc)

Some schools do not offer any stipend at all ( for example Harvard doesnt and the tuition for the programs are quite expensive! I have a friend in perio who has now a loan of 280 k)

I don't think it is true. My friend in Texas studies at Baylor. she graduated with me at my home country. She still got the use her stipend..
Don't know if the rule changes in Washington st, but I don't think so!

In fact she is now licensed to practice and won't have the 200k loan I am going to have! haha
But.. there are a lot of pros and cons to that issue.

Thank you tamana and ilovegoldens for taking time and answering my query.

good luck

I just graduated and well, I'm actually kinda sick of not being productive. I have some time till the nxt application cycle for international student programs start.
Does any1 in Massachusetts know what work I'm allowed to do here (e.g. dental assistant/ hygienist) with my currant degree and if I wanna do hygiene in the mean time what exactly do I need to do for certification?

You are only allowed to work as an assistant. The only state that allows you to work as a hygienist without going to school is Florida ( you only have to pass the boards).
Even though you are not going to be a registered assistant you can still get a job. They might require you to get an RX license which is not hard.
I would not waste time studying to be a RA...

You can also look into doing externships and research ( it might look better in your resume afterwards)
