So, we've been watching a crap ton of movies lately. 2-3 in a row the last couple of weekends.

It's been a nice way to put the brain on ice for a while. I've been out of the movie scene except for the DC and Marvel movies which I am a big fan of.

Recently we watched "POLAR" on Netflix.

Faaking awesome.

It's like Trainspotting AND Mission impossible AND Lock, stock and two smoking barrels all in one.
Brilliant movie.

If you haven't seen it. Watch it tonight.

So... recommend us some good stuff that has come out in the last 5 years (action/funny/horror/superhero type movies... just no cuddly stuff)?

This may not count as a movie but the Fyre Festival documentary on Netflix is fascinating. It is a testament to the profound absurdity of start up companies, the venture capitalists that fund them, and the culture of social media “influencers.”

Best Nicholas Cage Movie. The Bad Lieutenant. Eva Mendes is in it.

At first I was like: "ok, fine...whatever...I'll have a look see". Now I'm like "damn...this cat was right!"

Ok I feel real stupid right about now.
I watched Polar last night.
It was good.

I’ll throw in a random one though. I just watched “A Perfect Day”. It’s where my mind is these days. Pretty good flick but not for everyone.

Not a movie but Marvel’s punisher and daredevil series on Netflix are both amazing.

For movies, creed, War Dogs, Molly’s game, point break, John wick, million dollar arm, Whiplash, beasts of no nation

Documentaries: kissed by god, momentum generation, free solo, avicii: true stories

Why?

Definelty Arrival, it’s an amazing film. And do check out Sicario.
It’s by the same director and is definitely not cuddly.

The other thing I will recommend is The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Prime. It’s a TV series with 2 seasons so far. I was skeptical, but it is light and funny.

Second altered carbon

Fargo seasons 1 and 2 are some of the best shows I’ve seen

True detective sz 1 only

Daredevil and punisher

I just saw the new Spider-Man with my son. I thoroughly enjoyed it

Really liked Thor ragnarok

Hell on Wheels - all seasons
Lost in Space (the new Netflix series)

Since we’re now including series, I’ll throw in

Snowfall (first season good, second season really good)

And

Trust (takes a few episodes to get moving but also very good)

Netflix original series have taken the top spot over movies for me. (some of the below are not original Netflix, but are on it)

Sinner - Hard to describe, watch first episode and see if its interesting to you
Altered Carbon - Best scifi/steampunk series in a long time
Sabrina - I was a big fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and this kind of reminded me of it, but very good
Mindhunter - The origin of the SVU of the FBI
You - Series in the eyes of a stalker
Haunting of Hill House - Scariest show i've seen in a long time, but well done (Reminds me of 13 ghosts or something similar)
Legion - Marvel story about Prof X's son, really great cinematography and spooky

Echo above about Fargo and S1 of True Detective

Some of my fav old movies - Fight Club, Snatch

UGH am I the only person here who loathed La La Land? I seriously almost walked out of the theater.

I’m convinced critics love it because it romanticized Hollywood so much.
Same here. I felt it was hugely overrated. Then the music stuck in my head, bought the soundtrack. Then I listened to it like 20-30 times. Then I watched the movie again, at home, and it wasn't half as bad as the first time. Weird.

Regarding musicals, I thought The Greatest Showman was underrated, and deserved some Oscar nominations. I liked it way more.

Maybe I should give it another chance!

Totally agree on Greatest Showman - the music is fantastically good! Great family movie and deserved more praise

Enjoyed First Man, A Quiet Place, Halloween reboot, A Star is Born, Deadpool 2, Solo, I Tonya, Upgrade, Sicario 2, MI: Fallout

As far as badass shows, everyone should check out Altered Carbon

I didn’t like Altered Carbon but that guy was in The Killing which was great, season 1 at least.

Since we’re including TV shows; Broadchurch is an absolutely heartwrenching detective story.

And Narcos, definitely Narcos.

Hell on Wheels.... sorry the last few seasons sucked...!!

Agreed it digressed, but I still enjoyed the story development and the whole process. First few seasons were definitely better!

On a separate note. I only didn’t mention this because I figured it was inferred, but....

Parks and Rec!

MANDY...Nic cage crazy done wonderfully well

Colossal- this gem with Anne Hathaway was a uniquely fun thriller

Huge horror buff, too, if anyone wants to read some uniques in that realm.

"Upgrade" - great sci-fi movie, no big-name actors but definitely entertaining and GRAPHICALLY violent fights if you enjoy that sort of thing. Agree with most of the other suggestions above, add another vote for Arrival, can't go wrong with Amy Adams; also I, Tonya is very entertaining with great acting all around. If you like zombies, The Girl with All the Gifts was memorable.
More recently from the past year, loved Isle of Dogs and Into the Spider-verse, probably the two best movies from last year with Avengers very close behind.
For humor, I thought GameNight (can't go wrong with Rachel McAdams either, yowza) and Tag were worth more than a few laughs.
Finally, I think everyone should go see Alex Honnold's Free Solo just cuz it's so inspiring and amazing.

+10 Arrival (God bless Villeneuve, he's remaking Dune)
+1 Game Night
+10 Interstellar - Nolan, enough said
+1 The Martian

Huh I've been waiting for a dune movie ever since I read the book and I just learned that it was done before I was born

Btw Better Call Saul is another tv series that I loved. It's different from Breaking Bad but in a good way. Characters are very relatable.

Hahaha I just rewatched Dune about a year ago. It was... Interesting. I had memories of it from when my dad watched it and I was a kid. All I could remember was the nasty guy eating a cow tongue, and the giant sand worms.
