Do Psychology courses count as Other Science? or Non-Science?

Psychology is definitely non-science. That other course, if it is taught by the Bio department, like you say, you could probably get away with listing as science, even though it sounds like it was a non-science course.

By the way, do they confirm transcript receipt like AMCAS does, or do we just have to kind of hope everything has happened as it ought to have done?

I seem to recall reading that once you submit the application, you can check on the status of all "supporting documentation," as well as the status of application processing from the TMDSAS web page. I found the place where you do it, but you MUST submit first.

I find the lack of any confirmation of their receipt of my transcripts to be a little nerve wracking too. I suppose I could just call and ask. Fortunately, schools usually have a "Next-Day-Express" transcript service so if anything got screwed up it will only cost a bit of money to fix it.

Oh - I thought we weren't supposed to do that essay unless we were URM or saying we were disadvantaged. Guess I'm further from submitting than I thought. LOL

Gotta love the TMDSAS specific instructions about this one:

There is an optional question to allow you to briefly state any unique circumstances or life experiences that are relevant to your application. This area is provided so that you may address any issues, which have not previously been addressed. (This is not an area for you to continue your essay or to reiterate what you've previously stated.)

So it doesn't look like it is necessarily just for URM, etc.

I think this question (the "well-rounded student body one") screams out to non-trads, so, yeah, I am going to fill it out. IMHO traditional (and not URM, etc) students might want to condiser leaving something like this blank unless they could really think of some non-B.S. things to write. But what do I know, I am applying this cycle along with everybody else.

As far as living abroad goes, I'm not sure if that wouldn't make for a better "unique experiences" essay (i.e. the other optional essay topic) but if you already have a topic for that, then you could probably make it work.

I was hesitant to put my abroad experience there because it says something like "not listed elsewhere" and I put it as an EC and talked about it in my PS. I think I'm leaving the unique experience thing blank.

No, it won't make much of a difference. It will make a difference if you start holding over to August, since your application will get approved around the same time as all of the people taking the August MCAT. It will cause a lengthy hold up.

Remember that the application can take up to 2 months to process. If you recieve your MCAT scores in September, you'll need to have had your application submitted by July.

This is assuming that there are no glitches. My application was returned 3 times for modifications before it was accepted. I also had a delay due to the recommendation letters not being sent in promptly by my recommenders.

Request that your transcripts & recommendations be sent in immediately, and get your application in before July.

Oh man, I just turned in my TMDSAS but I realized I left a lot of stuff out that I could have put in. Also I didn't do the second optional essay. I've done a few interesting things that could justify my answering the optional question, but nothing phenomenal. If this keeps me out of med school I'm going to kick myself.

I just converted my AMCAS personal statement into the 80 characters-per-line format and realized that it's WAY too long! I've got to go cut out 20% of it. Am I the only dummy that hadn't actually worked out the implications (it wasn't a straight 4960 character limit)?

I am going to no-kidding edit this essay, write the other essay, and submit on Monday.

Yes, I just chose Courier New and put a line up top of "12345678" x10 and used it to set my margins properly.

It's not as bad as I thought, though. I had empty lines between my paragraphs. I'm only about 10% over, and that much tightening I can do. I'm still clueless on the second essay, but at least it's shorter.

Edit: Attacking ends of paragraphs (where only 1-3 words were taking up entire lines) helps. I just finished 🙂 ; my new word count is about 4600. Maybe some of those changes wouldn't come amiss in my AMCAS one too.

I submitted my application about a week ago. All of my supporting documents (transcripts, MCAT scores, committee letter) have also been received. I talked to a few professors and they told me not to fill out that optional essay unless there was a discrepancy in my application (MCAT vs GPA, no ECs, no shadowing, etc.). I had heard that TMDSAS won't start processing apps until June 1 so hopefully I'm in ahead of the masses. Good luck everyone!!

I have a question that may have already been answered, but I couldn't find it. At my school, courses are listed with 4 character prefixes and 5 digit class numbers. There are only 8 digits allowed in the course ID column under coursework, so even if i type it with no space, it won't fit. Anyone else have this problem?

i'd say cut off the last character on the prefix. i always thought the schools/TMDSAS would use your listing to verify your transcript, and if that's true, they should be able to figure it out from a 3 letter prefix.

I don't think so, but I don't remember the guidelines offhand. They talk about this in the instructions for the application, however.

From your screen name, I will assume that you go/went to UT. Sounds like you got an "Academic Summary" (free) instead of an official transcript ($10.) You need to suck it up and pay the $10 to get a copy of your official transcript for yourself. The courses are listed differently on the transcript than they are on the "academic summary." Then, list your courses as they appear on your transcript (they are NOT grouped according to department on your official transcript.)

It signifies whether that was the last time you took the class or not. The TMDSAS instructions, and my post a few pages back in this very thread go into more detail.

Umm you're not really behind. I didn't submit my TMDSAS App until the very last day, October 15th at 3pm. I had to use the Automated Postal Service Kiosk because I missed the lobby hours that day (Saturday). People may say that it took balls to do that... I say just stupidity... 👎

OK, I just submitted! I wanted to get mine in extra-early because I KNOW there will be a problem with my coursework, especially the "year" classification (I was in an integrated MS/BS program, where my Junior, Senior, and Graduate years were all sort of blended together -- i.e. integrated) which will probably earn me a spot in the "problem" pile.

Other than that, I'm glad to be done! I'll probably finish my secondaries tonight (I have to wait for MCAT scores to finish the Tech one -- why do they want you to tell them your MCAT scores AGAIN?) Then, I have to finish my AMCAS. Good luck all!

Applications ARE NOT sent to any schools until the application is complete, processed, and ALL supporting documentation (transcripts, LORs, and MCAT scores) has been received.

TMDSAS sends out applications after they have been processed REGARDLESS of what materials they have on your behalf. It's different from AMCAS.

Last year I had interviews without even having my LOR's turned in. I do not think you need everything turned in before they send your file off to the schools unless they changed that this year.

Those were the EXACT words from the TMDSAS lady. I asked that specific question and got that specific answer.

That being said, I don't know how to reconcile your experience with that answer <shrug>.

If it is true, that is good news, since one of my profs will be a litle late in sending in my LOR.

Right, send in your transcripts as early as possible. Mine (from my UG and Grad. school) was received in early May. My transcript from UT was sent over late May, immediately after Spring grades were posted. If your LORs are ready, send those too.
