I am wondering if it is too late to apply for the class of '05.
For some reason, I was convinced that I had to wait until next summer to apply so that I can be apart of the class of '06.
I will not be finsihed with my pre-reqs until then. I still have Orgo to take and I haven't taken or even though of the DAT yet.

I would say that if you haven't even thought of the DAT yet then I would wait until next spring. Also, not having your pre-reqs completed may mean that you will not be prepared for the DAT. I would say it is better to really knock the DAT flat your first time (20+) than to get a 17 this year and a 21 next year. Also, will you be able to graduate by April? If not, most schools won't even look at your application unless you have a 3.999999+ gpa and a 24+ DAT. Almost all matriculants into D-school have a 4 year degree. Another thing is that once you take your DAT (even if you take it next week) you probably won't get your application turned in until the end of November which means AADSAS won't get it sent off to schools until the end of January, then you have secondaries to fill out (followed by a 2 week min. waiting period) and then interviews to schedule. You're looking at mid March or Early April before you have interviews. Since 6,000-7,000 applications will be ahead of yours I'd reccommend saving your money and focusing on making your application stronger for next year (i.e. Study hard for the DAT). IMHO. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Thank you for the really good advice.
I already have my BA, but I need to complete some of the science pre-reqs.

no way, id still apply.

I didnt send my apps until mid-FEb....dont ask why I waited so long.

Its never too late. Lemme know if u need any more help.

Good luck

hmm ... I'm in a similar position.

just started cramming for the DAT and shadowing, and working in the mean time. I already have my B.S. and requirements fulfilled. I really hadn't even considered applying for the fall of '05, but I would MUCH rather get going with school than spend another year making 12 bux an hour and wasting my life.

Can someone give me some concrete details about when I would need to complete each step of applying in order to have a shot at getting in for this fall? Or any other schools that are particularly flexible on later applications? Assuming I perform on the DAT, I'm confident I'll be very competitive, but I don't wanna waste a bunch of cash if it's hopeless, thanks!!

Ie NYU or Boston
If you go to the AASDAS website, they give a list of all the schools that participate in the application service, give specific deadlines.

If you are serious, you should be working on your Application right now.
Get your application out by this week.

It will take a month too a month and half for the application service to process your application.

Then another 2 weeks for them to get it to the dental schools

Once at the school, the schools will take about another 2 weeks to process your application, and if your lucky you will get put into the review pile if all your supporting documents are done.

Supporting documents include
Letter of Reccomendation
Application fee
Secondary application-if they require them
Photo-some, schools require a photo.

Your looking at December before schools will get your application, then in January they will start interviewing. Most schools are usually done by December as far as interviewing.

Can you see why applying right, is not the best situation for you, especially if your Grades and DAT are not above average. Even above average applicants can get rejected as well by applying late.

hope this helps

What were you stats, and were you finished w/ u're pre req?....cuz i'm kinda in your boat

I wouldn't give up. My advice would be to send the AADSAS application out now with transcripts and letters of recommendation. By the time the school receives your app., you'll be prepping for the DATs. I did that last year and took my DATs in December. Since they had my stuff, all I had to do was fax my results (which you get the same day).
Actually, by the time they got my AASDAS, I had all but given up since I hadn't done Orgo 2 (which I took this summer). I just mustered up the courage to take the DAT (I didn't do too great), but 2 wks later, I was accepted. I don't have a Bachelor's degree, didn't have the highest GPA. I guess if you are sending out your AADSAS before the DAT, better make your Personal Statement really strong so that at least they'll want to meet you.
Best of luck

BTW, once you get into Dental, that's another whole strip of wax (pun intended)

if i was you, i would just take your time and apply next spring. that way you have all the time you need to finish your prereqs, study for the dat, do a good personal statement, and be able to apply nice and early for the first shot at those interviews and seats in the classes. save your money and time for when you can really give it your best shot.

"It is better to be safe than sorry"
I guess you could send in your application and do what some people had suggested, and pray that luck will be on your side and you will get accepted, although your chance is slim. OR be safe, take your time and save you the energy, the money, and the anxiety by applying next year. It is your choice!

It depends how strong a candidate are you.
If you get a strong GPA and DAT, you should definitely send in your aadsas asap.
Then, it takes 3-4 wks for them to send ur app to schools.
Use that period to study for DAT.

Now, you should also work on school selection.
I didnt apply "early" last year and still got tons of interviews even in Feb or April.
Knowing many of my classmates didnt get in till really late, it seems stats is more important than applying early or not.
In general, I would focus on private schools such as BU and NYU(mainly bcos their student pool is huge)

I have a 3.6 overall gpa, and I haven't computed specific science gpa's, but they would be ~3.4. I figure I can realistically submit the AADSAS app by mid-november (holding out until I get more shadowing done, unless it would be ok to send the app in now and shadowing info later on). I would be willing to take the DAT by early to mid December.

I am fully aware that applying in this fasion is not nearly as favorable as applying early. However, if the only disadvantage will be throwing away about $500 at a chance to save a year, it seems worth it (assuming no negative spin would be put on my chances of acceptance in the following cycle).

There appears to be 11 schools with a deadline of March 1, and a host of schools with a deadline of February as well.

Does this individual info sway earlier responses to the 'late-app' topic in either direction? And has anyone else gone a similar route and been successful?

Thanks for the post. You validated my thoughts.
