I was wondering if it is too late to apply to BU, Tufts, NYU, and Temple? Their deadline is March 1st. My Overall GPA is 3.1... science GPA is 2.9 ..... DAT AA is 18... I will be applying as a nonresident... I'm debating if I should just wait until next year to apply or just apply and see what happens... what do ya'll think? 😕 😕

Definitely hold off until next year. Make sure when you apply next year to get your app done as early as possible. Are you still a student? You really should work on raising that gpa, and retaking the DAT as well. I dont know about NYU, but the other 3 schools you are looking at are very competitive and most likely will need a higher gpa and at least a 19 DAT. If you were to apply at this point I doubt even 3.7 gpa and 21 DAT would get you in to those schools. Good luck.

hear it from someone who's paying a high price for being late. dude, you're late....too late...even for NYU you're late. however, applying next year is also risky because the DAT AA keeps going up every year. for instance, an early applicant with an 18 AA could get into BU for fall 2006. but next year, i doubt that 18 would get into a place like BU or Tufts. also, what's up with the GPA dude? if you're not going ot a school like princeton, then that GPA looks bad.

I second all the bold info. Next year and Good luck! :luck:

definitely late. everyone's chugging water at the finish line and you are about to tie your shoes on. i'd definitely wait till may and be the early applicant. until then, continue padding up your resume! save a kitten! capture osama! anything!

Actually, during my interview at BU, I was told specifically that they are not accepting applicants below AA of 19 because their experiences have shown that if you score below a 19 on AA you will have difficulty passing the first boards. I am sure many schools feel that way. So really try to get those DAT scores up a bit.

Hey. Welcome to SDN, you do have to realize that a great deal of the people on this forum are super type A people (sadly i rebel against being one of them) If you have a couple hundred to burn between you and your parents I would advise you to apply, it won't hurt you and the adcom people possibly may remember you next year if you have to re-apply. Things happen and people may have to drop their place, if you search these forums there are a number of people who got calls DAYS before classes began. As far as the numbers they are not everything, they are not the highest but try to explain this in your personal statement and essays. Good Luck.

You miss 100% of shots that you don't take... :luck:

to the window, to the wall ....

Since your scores and grades are average it might be a little too late to apply. If you have the funds then go ahead and try, but chances are that you will not get in.

If you had better scores and higher gpa you could still apply and be accepted. Today during my interview at UCLA I met a second year dent student who applied in December and was accepted.

I suggest taking more classes at your school or at a post bacc program to raise your gpa and maybe even retake the DAT to try to get 19 or better.

Good luck to you!

You might as well try getting in this year. How can it hurt you? If you don't get in this year; you will get much more consideration being a second time applicant next year.

This is a false notion that many pre-dents have. Just because you are a second time applicant doesn't mean you have any sort of advantage, and more times than not it is a disadvantage. A second time applicant will be looked favorably upon ONLY if they improve their application. If the applicant remains at the same gpa and dat score the second time around, they'll have even less chance to make it than their first attempt.

So boree what makes you so sure of this. If he continues and does well a second time applicant shows persistence and dedication.

sorry to be misleading with the username but i'm a girl not a dude... i'm not sure what I'mma do yet but thank you all for the advice... good luck to ya'll

I have a question for you. Are you calculating your science GPA as including only course like bio, chem and physics? Or are you also including courses like geography, math, astronomy and the like? I ask because the aadsas calculates 2 different science gpas: the BCP (biology, chemistry and physics) gpa, and the other science gpa, which includes your math(s), other sciences, and pyschology courses. So, when you say you have a 2.9 science, which gpa are you referring to? The answer may help those on the board better determine your shot at getting in. And also, I am curious to know myself being as I too have a low science(?) gpa.

My sci gpa is what the tmdsas (texas medical and dental student application service) calculated... I'm not sure how they do the calculations. I think the just includes bio, chem, physics.... I hope that answers your question...

i agree with bkwash, and if i were u i would probably give it a shot (if u have a couple hundred $$ to burn). the worst that can happen is u get rejected, and have to wait another year (which u will have to do if u wait anyway). i applied late because of personal circumstances, even though i knew i would have a better shot if i waited till next cycle and did it early. but to me, the chance to not have to waste another year out of school was worth a couple hundred dollars (i didnt apply to many schools). i would try anyway (assuming u can get everything in asap, and plan to possibly retake the DAT in the spring in case u dont get in this year. because your gpa isnt special (based on how tough its getting this year and next), i would try to get a 19-20 aa and then be confident of my shot if applying early next year. also do some other little things to boost your app in the meantime, like volunteering, more shadowing, etc.

I suggest you to apply for the next cycle instead of this one. If you submit your AADSAS application now, it will probably be end of February before AADSAS is done processing it. They then send it to the dental schools, which will look over the application. If you are fortunate enough to get any sort of interview, it won't be until end of March to April. By then, a good chunk of the class would have already been filled up, leaving you very little chance in getting in. Considering your stats are not particularly impressive, I really doubt your chances. I would, as others have suggested, try to take more classes to bump up your GPA. If you feel you could have done better on the DAT, try taking it again. Make sure you apply when the next cycle starts so you will get sort of an early advantage.

as far as the comment that "it won't hurt you", well, it definitely will. The application process is pretty expensive (a few hundred bucks) and I agree that if your stats don't improve all that much, being a second time applicant actually gives you more disadvantages than advantages.

Some people here have said to focus on raising your GPA, but at this point it's probably not feasible (assuming you're a senior undergrad and already have a ton of credits). So if I were you, id focus more on raising that DAT score. I know you're worried about that GPA, but if you can do really well (20+) on the DAT, that will show that you know your stuff. Besides, yea youre GPA might be a bit low, but if those grades are coming from a really competitive undergrad university, I think schools will take that into account IF you do well on the DAT.

Apply today!...it will not hurt you being a 2nd time applicant......but, expect to apply twice b.c. your odds are slim for getting in....and even if you don't improve your gpa you can improve your dat and shadow some more...have a good reason for applying late b.c. if you get an interview they might ask you this (e.g had to work for the money to pay for the applications...etc)..good luck

Just apply and give it a try!!

In my opinion it's way too late to start the application process now. Given that AADSAS will take atleast a month to compute your GPAs and another month to mail your application to schools and most schools only interview till March/April.
Most schools (if not all) are placing qualified applicants on waitlist, so that cant be a very good sign if you want to start your application now.

Take home lesson: Hold off till the next cycle.
