So I'm a total idiot, and had an orthopedic surgeon that I work with offer to write me a LOR a few months ago. We had just started working together, and I was flattered by the offer, but I felt bad taking her up on it since I already had two other vets writing me letters, and I felt that she didn't really know me all that well. However, last week she drops a bomb on me in surgery that her resident-mate/current close friend not only works as a professor at Western (my #1 choice), but she is pretty sure she is on the admissions committee. I keep thinking that I blew a really great opportunity to get an amazing letter that might have more pull than the others I've already gotten. I'm sure there are other threads on this, and I've read that it doesn't matter if they went to the school and write you a letter for it, but is this like, a HUGE opportunity that I'm passing up for no good reason? If so, is it too late to ask her to write me one? (Western LORs are due Oct 1). Thanks for reading my novel!😕

Honestly, it doesn't take 3 weeks to write a letter of recommendation supporting someone for something... Even if she needs time to edit, 3 weeks is plenty of time (unless she is going on a super long vacation between now and then). I think you can still ask without it seeming too daunting a task (i.e. stress that it is "only" 3 weeks away, especially if she says yes).

Does Western read more than three eLORs? If not, how do they choose the three? Is it random? That would bother me - having a great eLOR perfect for the school and it not counting after all...

Good point. That whole 3 LOR thing is quite limiting.

In terms of whether there's enough time, I think that's a question for the potential elor writer. But be sure you're careful about how you go about asking... the circumstances feel a little awkward to me. There's a chance that she could interpret your change of mind as indicative that her own opinions aren't valuable to you, but her connections are. I'm not saying that's the case, and I'm not saying you shouldn't ask... just be sensitive and honest 🙂
