Hi all,
What is YOUR top choice of medical school and why? Thought it would be interesting...

my sister is a senior undergrad at vandy. i gotta say i think nashville is one of the coolest cities in the us (ive got some country bias, so all you newyorkaphiles dont start a flame war);

University of Maryland. Instate tuition (for me), violent city so lots trauma cases, just about the highest ranked shock trauma center in the world, close to grandma, etc. 🙂

University of Washington. Lived in the area my whole life and haven't been anywhere I like better than Seattle, great program, #1 in Primary Care, in-state tuition, etc.

I don't think that very many state schools outside of some of the CA ones, UMich, and UPenn are going to be put down as top choices. However, that doesn't mean that they're not excellent schools- especially UT-Southwestern. It's just that people here are mainly listing their dream schools- often the top schools in the nation- and a lot of those happen to be private and either on the coasts or in the North. It was the same thing with undergrad. A lot of us dreamed of going to Yale, but were ecstatic to receive our full rides to state institutions...

Indiana- three words: in-state tuition. Not to mention that I'd probably not have to move for the first two years of school and I already know all of the profs who teach the preclinical courses.

Personally you couldn't pay me to go to Yale, Harvard or Cornell (especially Cornell).

UCSF (yeah right) UPenn (yeah right) but considering the whole package (nice curriculum, good financial aid, high stats, chances of getting in) BAYLOR COLLEGE!! I still haven't heard from them 🙁 gotta have the interview! gotta have it, gotta have it!

Unfortunately, until the interview, there is little to go on BUT reputation. It is a little frustrating that most medical schools have the snobbish idea that you don't need to find out what a place is truly like until you've been accepted. So you apply to schools based on reputation, and then hope you get enough acceptances to make a decision on where you think you'll fit in best.

And, in any case, it looks like chungmoo IS basing his choices on reality (experience at the interview).

I personally would love to stay in-state and be close to home.....friends would be close, I can stop by my crib to eat some of my moms cooking whenever I want instead of taking out more loans because I am eating out daily, and plus I would love to practice in my home state.

It depends on the school for sure, but yeah...you can save a ton of money. Plus there are a lot of state schools that have a pretty damn good reputation, like UNC, UVA, U Florida, many of the UC's, UT-SW, etc. If you want to save money and eventually practice in your home state, I'd say going to your state school would definitely be the best idea. It might even increase your chances for a good in-state residency than going to a private, out-of-state "better" school.

I think IU is a pretty good school, with good clinical sites and good professors. I don't think the name on my diploma is honestly going to make that much of difference so long as it came from a school that wasn't located in Mexico or the Caribbean
