I am struggling with Top Front End part in PAT. I get like 4-5 out of 15. And one time I guessed the entire 15 questions and got a 7, which made me feel like I rather guess.
One way that I've read about and been successful at implementing is to count the lines. For example, look at the tutorial that Kahr is referring to. Notice how the TOP view has six lines, counting solid and dotted lines. Now, go to the answers and this immediately eliminates b and c because b has 5 and c has 4. The correct answer must also have 6. Now you are down to A and D which gives you a 50-50 shot. Now when you look at the front view you see four solid lines. This tells you that there must be four edges that you can see from the front and A is the only option that fits the bill because C only has three. Hope this helps and if you need me to explain more feel free to pm me.
Follow these 3 steps to get you started with TFE type of questions.
1. NEVER try to figure out what the 3D object is.
2. Look at these pictures and draw their TOP FRONT and END (TFE) out. Please dont skip this step if you are new to TFE. When you draw it, notice the differences in size of each object and how Top Front End RELATED to each other.
3. Count the lines: Look at the example below. I am sorry if this picture is hard to see but it shows you how to use line counting to do a hard question.
Try to do this yourself. You dont even have to use the End view to answer this question.
Ok, here is the answer for the above problem. I only use FRONT VIEW to answer question.
I only draw the FRONT VIEW of all the answer choices.
Sorry There are so many line for B. You don't need to draw every line out because the 3rd line (from left to right) tells you that its wrong.
I didnt finish drawing C because its also wrong at the 2nd line (from left to right). No point of drawing the rest.
even though D is correct, i think it is missing a couple dotted lines. U see the 3 dark vertical lines in front view they provide, shouldn't there be 2 dotted lines in between?

I never count lines by the way. I just look at the figure for about 15-20 seconds to figure out the general shape and then I go about eliminating... Crossing out anomalies is the fastest way!
If you have to sit there and count lines... you'll be wasting a lot of time 🙁
Also... you don't have to go through all of those steps to figure out the right answer. It's just to give you a complete explanation!
You can actually figure out the answer from the front view alone. B has two hidden lines but their placement is wrong! This will immediately give you D as the answer but doing the end view will give you an extra confirmation ^^
no but it works most of the time. you can have dashed lines hidden behind solid lines. its a real quick way to narrow down the answers, but sometimes you're left with two realistic answers based on this method. you should have a way to figure it out in case this happens.
