Touro University - CA Fall 2011 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
for the most part i agree with you, and you have some really good points. especially the deposit, which is highway robbery.

what's wrong with weekday interviews, it seems pretty standard almost everywhere, i've never heard of a job interview on a weekend. i have a weekend interview coming up, and i'm pretty upset. i'm losing my friday and saturday. i'd much rather lose work days than free days.

is the deposit really $2000??

Just faxed the forms to the school today. Yes...the deposit makes me a sad panda too... O(TT.TT)O

I requested an extension for the deposit in hopes of hearing an acceptance from UOP. But unfortunately, I was put on hold 👎 Now it's time to pay that $2000 deposit 😡

me too =[ I think we're in the same boat right now. How did your USC interview go and what did you think of that article?? I have this gut feeling that I got put on active consideration for USC and that I'll probably have to wait until March to hear back. I know what's done is done and I should just relax and wait for the results, but I still can't stop stressing. Maybe I need Zoloft LoL!

What's the point of stressing if you got into pharmacy school already? lol! Go chill out and partyyyy!

Lol, yes we are on the same boat! I'm not feeling so great on the USC interview as well. The writing portion was super tough for me. But oh well, we should be happy knowing that we're going to be pharmacy students 🙂 👍

Hopefully we will hear an acceptance from USC soon! :luck::xf:

Hey dnguyen401,

Just curious, but what was the time frame Touro allowed you to extend your deposit fee?

Thank you!

Originally, the deadline for my deposit was the 5th of November. Once I requested an extension, Mr. Davis extended it to the 19th.

to those accepted, do you mind posting your stats?

please please :]

Hi,

Please can you tell me about your essay topic????????????

Thnx

Does anyone have some ballpark figures as to how many seats in the entering class has been occupied? I just decided to apply to Touro and wanted to see if its too late now.

Refer to the Roll Call sticky and look under Touro.

I believe the Dean said that this year they're going for 120 students?

In regards to stats, your overall GPA and also your science GPA must be 3.0 or above for the committee to consider you.

I am not even sure if I'm going to apply. They have interviews on Wednesdays and Thursdays which is TERRIBLE timing. Most of us have classes we're trying to pass, and that means that for those who live a fair bit away, we would have to fly down there and miss at least 2 days of school. Then they make you decide right then and there if you're going to accept with a $2,000 deposit. Plus its in a ghetto of the Bay Area (insanely high rent costs), and it's the most expensive school I've seen. And you know the second year of rotations is just so they can make another $36,000 off of you for free as it costs them nothing to have you do a second year of rotations. LOL Come on, do they think that pre-pharmacy students aren't smart enough to figure out their game? If I'm going to be in it for 4 years. I'd rather go to a school that spreads out the didactic training over 3 years and has 1 year of rotations.

Where's the upside to this school? It just seems like it represents everything wrong with America's skyrocketing cost of healthcare and higher education while effectiveness of the two fields is actually declining.

Hello fellow applicants, I am a second year student at Touro University. When I applied to pharmacy school in 08-09, all my interviews were on weekdays. Its no surprise that interviews require time management and personal sacrifice.

Not to call out Omnimoeish, but this person is seriously misinformed. Touro does not require you to pay $2000 on the spot, they give you a reasonable window of time to deposit your money. Sure, all schools vary in their deposit window, but I recommend applicants to contact the admission's office if you want the most accurate information.

Sure Vallejo is not the nicest area I've ever lived in, but you can live on the island which is a community of Touro students from all the colleges of health science. The rent here is a little pricey, but you get the benefit of living safe and minutes away from school. Most students live in the surrounding cities such as Benicia, Vallejo, and American Canyon. My rent is $450/month and I live in a fabulous house with COM and COP students. I love it. No complaints here.

Addressing the second year of rotations. I feel it is critical to get as much experience as you can. I did an institutional rotation today, and was asked by my preceptor to explain the MOA of Amiodarone, explain it's Blackbox warnings, and explain the pharmacokinetics, then calculate the loading dose and maintenance dose for the patient. Needless to say I had to look it up using references like Lexi-Comp and get back to my preceptor. This is a typical question you might expect as a student on rotation. If you think you are going to cover ALL disease states, and ALL patient types, and ALL clinical situations in one year of rotation, you are completely wrong. If fact I am already preparing to apply for a PGY1 & PGY2 residency after I graduate because I want more specialized training after my 2 years of rotations.

Keep in mind that Touro leans toward clinical pharmacy education, if you are looking to get into retail, then Touro might not be the right school for you. Just so you know, I am top of my class and I'm on the Dean's list, so I know my stuff and I still feel I will be severely inexperienced after 2 years of rotations. Take it from someone who has been in pharmacy school for a year and a half.

If any applicants have any questions, feel free to send me a PM. I will give you a straight answer. I am a very busy student but I will try my best to respond in a reasonable amount of time. Good luck!

Yeah I did, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to Touro. I only live 1.5 hrs away from the school, which is nice because I can visit home every couple weekends.

When is your interview date btw?

UOP, USC, CA Northstate, UCSD, and UCSF (My mom wanted me to gamble and take a chance with UCSF lol but whatever it's her money 😛)

I also went for USN and got an interview but I withdrew my app when I got into Touro.

Lol I see. Well good luck with the rest of your other applications! Maybe we'll be classmates? 👍

when did you guys send an email to the dean to request the interview results via email, the day the results are mailed out?

After I got home from the interview that day, I immediately emailed the Director of Admissions, Steven Davis, requesting to receive the results by email.

All the questions that were asked in my group were not posted on student doctor. We weren't even asked the typical why touro and why pharmacy, so I think it is best to just practice talking. One question was "what do you want for the pharmacy profession in the future and how are you going to accomplish it?"

Best of luck!!

I am aware that Touro interview candidates every Wednesdays and Thursdays. Does anyone know approximately how many students they interview each week?

There were 10 candidates during my interview so ~20 per week.

is anyone still waiting for an invite for the supplemental essay? I submitted my Pharmcas on Nov 1st, and not sure how long it usually takes for them to begin sending invites out to applicants to do the supplementals. Any information is appreciated 🙂

The supplemental form is under the admissions link. You just have to fill out the supplement and mail it in. If you need more space to write the essays, you can use another sheet of paper as long as you still keep it concise. 🙂

Well, I suppose you can have a head start on the supplemental, but I wouldn't send it out with the app fee until you get that official email saying you were invited to fill it out.

A friend of mine sent out his PharmCAS in the last week of October, and he still hasn't gotten the invite from the school to do the supplemental. The explanation for this was that PharmCAS did not finish calculating his GPA and therefore didn't send out the official app to the schools yet (the calculations usually take up to 5 weeks, depending how busy they are). I know my friend's PharmCAS app was finally sent out to the schools last week or so. Just to make sure, you should go onto PharmCAS to make sure that your GPA has been calculated already and whatnot.

Oh thanks! I didn't know they already had the questions out. I guess I can start thinking about them. Did you apply to or hear from Touro yet?

Thanks for the update! Yea, I know. Pharmcas does take a while to finish calculating the grades. It took them about a month for them to finish mine and was finally sent out about 2 weeks go? Hopefully I start hearing from schools soon. Btw, Congrats on your acceptance!

I am placed on High Alternate. I am having mix feelings about this, because I thought I would get rejected since I didn't do well at the interview, so I am happy on one hand. However, on the other hand, I am still waitlisted, that means I have to wait for another 5 months to find out if I will get accepted or not. Kind of stressful, since Touro is the only Pharmacy School I applied to this year. I really want to get in. Wish me luck!! :xf:

Good luck! I always hear from previous students that people placed on wait-list still has a great chance of acceptance 👍
