Touro University - CA Fall 2011 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It seems like you and me are on the very same boat 😀 I've been waiting since 3/3 after they emailed me saying my app is now completed... hopefully we will get the invite soon :luck:

Does anyone have interview scheduled on late March or April?

I have an interview on march 17th. Isnt it too late though? I am so nerves

Do you mean is it too late to be accepted? If that is what you are asking then no. It's not too late. If you have an interview then you have a chance of being accepted. Schools don't interview for waitlist spots. They interview for seats in the upcoming class.

Don't be too nervous. Just focus on your upcoming interview and don't worry too much about the number of seats left.

From what I read on the email a Touro admission staff sent me, they will interview until mid May so your interview is not late at all, you still have chance so best of luck on the 17th 🙂

I'm still waiting for the invite thou.... 😴

May I ask after you submitted your supp app how long it was before they sent you the interview invitation?

Anyone here interview on 3/9/11? Just wanna see what you thought of the campus and interview itself. PM me or respond to this post. Thanks!

I think it's ~3.4. However, people can get in with a lower GPA. Depends on the rest of your application (LORs, ECs, pharmacy experience, interview, etc.)

I had similar stats and I was accepted. Dont worry about your gpa once you've been granted an interview. Instead focus your efforts on performing well.

I got an interview for this Wednesday. Anyone else going to be there?

I was offered the 3/24 date as well but I turned it down for 3/30 instead. Thats only because I would like the opportunity to get my thoughts together and do some kind of preparation. Best of luck though!!!!!!!!!

Check the School Feedback and go over the questions there. Do a mock interview. A lot of the same questions show up during the actual interview.

Worst. Interview. Ever. Go on SDN, know your app (especially supplemental). Know everything you wrote in there. For instance, if you wrote cooking as a hobby under activities/interests, be prepared to know the recipe for your favorite meal. Not to freak you out, but some of the interviewers there grill you. Best of luck! Practice, practice, practice, and be as confident as possible.

I don't think there's a way to really prepare for their essay. It's not like you will know the prompt before hand but I don't think you should worry too much about it. They give you options for the prompts so you can choose the one you're more comfortable with. It's really not bad at all.

thanks!!!

omg interview next wednesday!!! 😱

For those that are worried about how to prepare for the essay during the interview session, just make sure to know how to structure and organize your essay. Example...Catchy introduction following a thesis about the main idea's you'll write about. Have each topic sentence of each paragraph tie into your thesis statement from the intro. Have transitional sentence at the end of each paragraph that leads to your next paragraph. Conclude all your idea's in the conclusion paragraph. Simple enough.

They really just want to see if you know how to write. Basic English 1A stuff.

Hi! I was originally schedule for an interview on 3/30 a few days ago. It is kind of a rush and I want to prepare more. Will it hurt my chance a lot if I change my interview date from 3/30 to 4/12?

I don't have a concrete answer for you but I will say that since Touro accepts students on a rolling basis, you have a better chance at gaining a seat at an earlier interview date as opposed to a later one (since seats get filled and there are only so many seats that remain). However, it is also better to be prepared and do well in an interview at a later date than to be unprepared at an earlier date. The dates aren't that far apart so I don't think it's going to hurt you. It's really up to you. Sorry couldn't really give you a solid answer.

My original interview was at the end of October, but I rescheduled it for mid December only b/c that was the only earliest Thursday interview they had coming up (I had all day lab on Wednesdays👎). It gave me plenty of time to prepare which was nice. In your case I'd probably think twice about rescheduling b/c this school is a rolling basis enrollment, so 1st come 1st serve. I'd say take the day as early as you can before all the seats get taken up!

Thanks for the information! I was also wondering how prepared we need to be? ( in terms of knowing what's going on in the field, technology and etc) or it is more like they will ask questions to see your personality?

You should prepared to answer anything you mentioned in your PharmCAS and supplemental applications (anything from ECs to stuff you wrote in your essays). Be ready to clarify and elaborate on anything.

Check the School Feedback and go over the questions there. A lot of the same questions show up during the actual interview. From there, you can see how prepared you are.

Just got an email invite for an interview! I mailed in my app 03/30 and I was worried that it was too late but there's still hope. I have to call tommorow to set a date. Nervous........

Hello Everyone,

I am scheduled to interview with Touro this Thursday and am so scared about the essays (based on what I read on their site).

How in depth about current pharmacy news and events do they ask during the oral interview and are the writing sample topics really pharmacy-related?

Besides practicing answering questions, how else should I prepare? Thank you very much to all.🙂

Congratulations!! Will you guys be attending?
Thanks! I didn't think my interview went so well, but I guess it was ok =). I have a few weeks to make my decision but I'll probably see you in August!

Interesting, I too had the worst interview ever. You didn't by any chance had the mean middle age asian lady?

I had a bad interview too but it was with a mean middle aged asian man. lol

Is anyone for sure attending Touro this August? Is there a site for people planning to go to look for housing? Where do most touro students live? and also, how much loans do you guys plan on taking out to pay for school? Please PM me. Any feedback is great!

I've been looking on here for housing and plan to live on Mare Island (expensive, but safe).
There's a COA (cost of attendance) page which gives a rough estimate of how much everything costs (housing was over estimated). I input some of my own numbers for different categories and came up with my own COA

Hahaha nope mine was with an older guy- I think he was Eastern European. Major d-bag. Yeah, I said it. Oh well, I ended up getting into a MUCH better school anyway so I'm not bitter, (anymore at least), haha.

Haha glad to know you had a good experience. 👍

I've been high waitlisted. Now I am stressed, because they will be concluding interview soon and I don't know how many spots there are left. Does anybody know the stat from previous years, that how many high waitlisted got accepted eventually or do you know anyone who was in high waitlisted that got accepted?

What date did you interview???

Can any current students tell me how much they approximately spend on books/supplies for the first year? The estimate from the website seems quite high. Thanks

I also got accepted to Touro and WesternU, but I'm kind of unsure what would be some positives or negatives if I were to choose Touro? I'm slightly leaning towards WesternU at the moment. It's still early for me to decide, and I need to make a definite decision soon!
If there are Touro students roaming around this thread, I would appreciate any responses. Thanks

I'm in the same position as you. I'm leaning more towards Touro because of the 2+2 and to get away from So.Cal to try something new.

The basic differences revolve around the academic and rotation schedules. Touro is a 2+2 schedule, meaning that they do two years worth of didactic and two years worth of rotation. If I remember correctly Wester is 2.5 years didactic and 1.5 years rotation. That means that Touro stuffs the same amount of classroom work into 4 semesters rather than 5 at Western, a bit on the rough side at times IMO.

Touro has the longest rotation schedule of any California pharmacy school, which means that you get more 'real world' experience by the time you graduate than other schools, and a chance for more elective rotations to check out other facets of a pharmacy career before having to make decisions upon graduation.

Ultimately, you need to decide upon what you want from your schooling.

For reference, I am just finishing my P3 year in a few weeks. If you have any questions I will be happy to try to answer them, no guarantees on timely replies (I am on rotation right now and pretty busy), but I will try. Also, I am not your typical pharmacy student, coming back to school at a somewhat advanced age, without much of a BioSci background. P-)

Over the first two years I spent less than a thousand dollars on books/supplies (remember that the official list includes the cost of a laptop, or it used to). I ended up buying maybe a third of the required books the first year and then supplemented with other books over the years. Even at that a couple of the books I have only opened a few times; I have found that I tend to go back to the same books over and over for reference (Koda-Kimble is a prime source for me).

Note: this was my experience and things may have changed over the past year (including the book list), that influence the current needs of students.

hey zilko, I got placed as high alternative. What are my chances of getting accepted after the interview process is over?

I feel you on this, remembering the uncertainty of the application process myself, but I can't offer up anything in the way of an answer for you. Whatever you were told by the admissions office is the 'best' answer available to you. Waiting sucks, I know.

When I applied Touro was still working on its accreditation and I think more applicants opted to go elsewhere when possible, now that the school is accredited I would bet that fewer take that option unless they truly get a better offer for their personal situation.

I will be moving south to San Diego for my P4 year.

This makes available the place I have been renting, PM me if interested.

Hey all 2011 Touro-CA applicants:

Tomorrow we will receive admissions decisions: I just want to say best to luck to everyone.
