No I haven't. I only got contact information from one other person. I kind of stalked your previous posts :laugh:...just to figure out who you were. I think you were the guy that interviewed at DMU the same week I did. Are you going to accept TOUROCOM?

In that case, 1) I'm flattered 😀 and 2) I know who you are now. I have not officially decided, but I am certainly leaning toward accepting. What about you? Will you be going to Touro? And did you end up getting into DMU?

Unfortunately, I was wait listed at DMU. Like I mentioned to you, my interview there was rough, and because of that, it kind of turn it off for me. As of right now I'm accepting Touro and turning down some other upcoming interviews that are in isolated locations. I really can't see myself isolated in towns like Des Moines or Blacksburg. Still waiting on hearing back from other places that may veto my decision, but yes, right going towards Touro.

I got "alternate listed" at DMU as well. I can do isolation in the middle of nowhere though. Touro has definitely impressed me the more I look into it. It is progressing quickly and our degree is most likely going to be worth quite a bit come residency application time. Still have much to consider and people to call, but keep me updated on your process. Any other acceptances?
 
Did you hear anything? You are from Albany, right? I am the girl from Kingston that had the late interview.

Hey guys, I'm accepted into UMDNJ SOM and Touro, but my question is what will make me choose TOURO over UMDNJ-SOM? And is Touro fully accredited?

also interviewed in the beginning of december and haven't heard anything. i've tried contacting the admissions office but no reply.

yes touro is fully accredited. umdnj-som - better: reputation, residency opportunities, board scores, campus, rotations, lessing moving around for rotations. Touro has the better location but then again SOM is not too far from philly and the area where it is located is cheap.

reasons to go to touro: you for some reason need to be in nyc, felt more comfortable at touro, don't care and will be good no matter where you go (a lot of people don't realize how well you do in med school is mostly on the individual...some schools just make it easier on you), want to have the nyc experience.

technically you just need to be pre-accredited to start accepting students. you become fully accredited once you graduate your first class. all schools start out with pre-accreditation and almost everybody (if not everybody) goes on to being fully accredited.
 
Hi all! I'd love to get some advice on what to do in my situation since you all probably know a lot more about Touro NY than I do. I had been contacting the school since October about receiving a secondary, and kept getting the response that my app was being processed. Finally Issa Sow let me know a little while ago that I was actually supposed to receive a secondary back in September. I already have one acceptance at KCOM, and a few more interviews, so I just want to know if it's worth it to pay the 200 dollar fee. Touro doesn't seem to care too much that they made a 2 month mistake, and I figure that that IF I get an interview it won't be til February or March. I would love to try and apply, but what makes Touro so great?!

Sorry for the long post, but I've been back and forth on this for too long! Would also be great to get some feedback from those who also know a bit about KCOM. Thanks in advance, and congrats to those of you already accepted!

This is really going to come down to how badly you want to go to Touro. Your assessment doesn't seem off base.
 
Hey Guys,
So, I recently submitted my secondary and payment. I wrote a letter of interest to the school and I suppose that helped with getting a secondary :banana: I REALLY want to go to Touro, but Im afraid that I’ll probably be interviewing in February or March, if invited at all. I hope its not for a wait list spot though 🙁

What do you guys think? Will it probably be an interview for a wait list spot at this point? I mean I’ll take anything hahaha I’d be flattered just getting the chance to interview but I really want to go here :xf:

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! thanks everyone !
 
Have you tried going to the sub-forum of school specific threads? They might stir you into the right direction.
 
No, this is not the case. I applied to all three Touros, got secondaries from all three, but only interviews from two while on hold for the third. Touro NY used to have secondary=interview, but seems like they changed it this year according the school specific thread.

At least for NY the above is true. The days of secondary equalling interview are over.

Hi there,


I am stuck now... I posted in PCOM's page with some of my ideas, but I also want opinions from people who chose Touro.

I have until tomorrow (1/5) to decide. I can't even mail the form in, I would fax it or even deliver it in person if need be I have waited so long.

I interviewed at PCOM last month, really liked it too. They said I would hear back by 1/5. How ironic. Today is 1/4, and nothing yet (maybe today's mail?).

I really liked both schools. I am not saying either are not great, I am just stuck.

PCOM seemed to have its act together after 112 years, and even the one random day I visited, a few alumni were giving talks... Touro is a new school, not many alumni to work with. I am also honestly a little intimidated by the removal of all standard lectures at Touro - and everything being online/clickers compared to live lectures at PCOM (I have heard not everyone goes, but I think I would). I also liked that PCOM seems to give students patient contact in the first year, whereas Touro doesn't seem to do it until the second year. Are there extracurricular opportunities for that?

I'm just a bit more skeptical of Touro, but in its favor - the location can't be beat, I have a huge friend/support base in NY, none in Philly, and the students/faculty I met did seem really excited there (same was true at PCOM).

In PCOM's favor, they do have the multiple extra degrees you can choose including the MPH and MS in Forensics that are intriguing, but on the other hand, won't just getting my DO be enough work and worth something on its own?

I am wondering from anyone who had the opportunity to choose between these two schools this cycle or prior, what were the deciding factors for you one way or the other? I am going to pay the $2000 deposit for New York today, because if perchance I am not accepted to PCOM any day now, I lose everything. Ironically, PCOM's deposit is only $250, so if I do get in, I might as well ante up there too in case I change my mind, right?

Any ideas?

You should call PCOM and tell them you have another admission deposit pending and ask if they can give you their decision over the phone so you don't just send the $2000. Tell them you can fax them proof and that way you can make a more informed decision.

As someone who was accepted to both PCOM and Touro, i am choosing PCOM because although Touro has a great idea for a program, it is still in the development phase; it is not anywhere near the solid, tried and true program PCOM offers. Maybe in 20 years Touro will have proved that their program habitually works as well as PCOM's, but they are still working out the kinks, and PCOM clearly isn't. Plus everyone at PCOM was so nice! and i didn't get that vibe at touro.. they are so disorganized it is such a turn-off. Just my thoughts, i'm sure others will disagree but that was my impression! good luck 🙂

I am in the exact same situation as you. I interviewed at Touro on 12/6 and PCOM on 12/8. I was accepted at Touro just six days later (by mail) and I have until tomorrow (1/5) to get my deposit in and I am still waiting from PCOM which I should hear back from them this week. I was much more impressed by PCOM for its reputation, extensive alumni and community network, great facilities, and curricular format.

I would much rather put the $250 deposit down on PCOM and hold my spot in that class while I hear out the rest of my apps/interviews. I have been trying to get ahold of admissions at Touro for over a week now and they have not gotten back to me regarding an extension on my deposit deadline, must be running slow with the holiday break. Im a quite annoyed with Touros lack of responsiveness. Would anyone else know if admissions at Touro grants extensions on the deposit deadline. $2000 is a steep deposit to put down for a school I was not to enthused about but I would still go to if that was the only place I was accepted to. Input from anyone else here at SDN would be much appreciated

Wait, what now, there are no real lectures at Touro? I have to admit I probably would just media site them at home anyways and skip lecture but it is nice to have the option to go. Can someone explain this change further please, thanks! Are there any current Touro students that can comment on how this change is working so far for them?

I agree with a previous poster and call PCOM and tell them your situation. If they still will not tell you over the phone then go ahead and make the $2000 deposit because as they say "a bird in the hand". Also, definitely make the $250 PCOM deposit if accepted there if you have not decided on a school by their deadline because $250 is a very small deposit from what I have seen.

My secondary was submitted less than 3 weeks ago, but it says to not contact the admissions committee until 3 weeks after submitting the secondary. Its January and getting late so I really wanted to check and see if the committee had gotten a chance to look at my application yet. Do you guys think its rude to call before three weeks? And I’m not sure if you can even ask if the committee has looked at your application yet. Maybe I’d have to phrase that differently lolololol Any suggestions would be really appreciated ! 😀 I’m starting to get so nervous I really hope they like me on paper and extend me an invite to interview.

nah the person before you was wrong. I read that earlier today and immediately called up a second year to confirm or deny it and they confirmed that the poster before either misunderstood how the "itunesU" component works, or was told bad info. The online stuff is an adjunct (to a certain degree a required adjunct) to the regular lectures so that less time is spent in "required" lecture time in the buidling.

from what the profs and deans said during interview day was that as of right now (i think) anatomy and one other class is using itunesU. Where content based lectures are taught via recordings and then once or twice a week for an hour the prof in classroom (peer group learning) goes over the high yield contents and quizzes students using the clicker-ma-thing.
and based on how things go this year (grades and comments from students) they are going to try to teach every class with the recordings and peer group learning technique.

the first half, from what i've been told, is not quite accurate. its way more than 1-2 hours a week. Especially in the big classes like anatomy. Its just way less than the ~12 hours i was getting when i was a first year.

Wouldnt be surprised if they tried to keep integrating more and more of it into the curriculum as time went on. The pre-clinical dean *loves* to experiment. But I also imagine it would return back to the way it was recently/is now after a semester of that because I imagine too much freedom for self-education and group peer education wouldnt be the success they'd imagine. Works at LECOM because people sign up knowing damn well that they chose to self-educate or small group peer educate, I dont think that freedom to drive your own education works across 100% of an enrollment class. But thats just my conjecture on it. Clearly I know very little more than you since a 3rd year is just as divorced from pre-clinicals as most pre-meds who had the one interview would be.

The way that it was this semester was (first semester OMS-1):
3/4 Embryo lectures online
1/3 Biochem
100% Physiology
100% OMM
As far as next semester they've told us that Physio will continue to be this way, the other Biochem prof is working on recording his lectures, pharm and neuro will be online too.

The way it works is that the online lectures replaced in class lectures. Take physio for instance: we had 3 hours of online for a 1 hour clicker session with 5-10 questions. There were group discussions following the questions if the majority of the class didn't understand.

Unfortunately, Anatomy will be recorded for next year (big loss my opinion) along with pretty much everything but PD. Our preclinical dean thinks this is the right direction to go in, and even though most students don't like it, we can't argue with our performance on exams (which has been better than previous years).
From what we have been told, his goal for next year is to have mostly every class recorded so that we only need to be in school 2-3 days/week for labs, lectures that aren't recorded, and for the clicker sessions.

oh he definitely is. and he will convince you to do things you don't really want to do but in the end it usually works out well.
also he plays an amazing game of madden.I lost a bragging rights game to him a year ago and I'm contractually obligated to say that every time it comes up
 
Hey guys, I've been trying to find the answer to this question but have only found the answer for years 1-2. Obviously, for years 1-2 we will not need a car. However, will we need a car for years 3-4 or can we get to all the rotation sites via public transportation? I currently have a car so if I go to school in NYC I am trying to figure out if I should garage it at home for 2 years so that I will have it for years 3-4 or if I should just sell it if I won't be needing it for years 3-4.

As for now, you will need the car for years 3-4. We currently don't have rotations in Manhattan and so public transportation isn't as reliable. As far as I know they're in Jersey, upstate NY, and Staten Island. I know they're working on Harlem Hospital, but that's still in the future. But just wait, Doc will be with you shortly 🙂
